A closer look at the Limited Edition Garnet Red Super Slim PlayStation 3 Console

CDW - Hands on with the Red Sony PS3 - 8

Sony have just launched two new coloured Super Slim PlayStation 3 consoles, one in Garnet Red and the other in Azurite Blue and we took a closer look at the Garnet Red one, because Red is our favourite colour.

CDW - Hands on with the Red Sony PS3 - 4

Each of the new limited edition consoles brings a colourful, fresh new look to the 500GB Super Slim PS3.

The Garnet Red and Azurite Blue consoles also represent great value as each comes bundled with two coloured Dualshock3 controllers to match the console.

CDW - Hands on with the Red Sony PS3 - 1

This PS3 also comes with a massive 500GB hard drive for all your downloads, saved games and anything else you want to put on it!

CDW - Hands on with the Red Sony PS3 - 6

By redesigning the internal design architecture and removing the disc-fed tray for a sliding top-loading disc cover, the PS3 Super Slim is reduced in size by up to 25% compared to the current Slim PS3.

CDW - Hands on with the Red Sony PS3 - 12

Having a sliding top-loading disc cover makes this PS3 feel a little retro, but that’s one of the things that makes this PS3 cool, apart from the colour of course. The cover works well either with the PS3 laying flat, like in the picture above, or if it is standing up. There is a button to open and close the the tray too, and it works a lot smoother when standing up.

Other than that you get the usual from a PS3, and the inclusion of two controllers was a great idea, because let’s be honest here, one controller is just never enough.

Here are some more shots of this limited edition beauty:

The limited edition PS3 consoles are available now for £249.99, so if you can’t wait for the PS4 why not bag yourself one of these beauties today?

App Update: Twonky Beam Browser for iOS updated to 3.4.1

0

Twonky have just updated their Twonky Beam Browser for the iPhone and iPad.

mza_1441380450197029353_320x480-75_t[2]

Twonky Beam Browser provides you with a simple and familiar way to discover and enjoy Internet videos with your tablet or phone and beam them to your TV or other media players on your home network.

When you visit your favorite websites, or discover new ones, Twonky Beam Browser will display a Twonky Beam button over the media files that you are able beam to your TV or sound system. The home page of Twonky Beam Browser contains links to popular websites with great content you can beam. Browse many pages at once through tabs, with the home page always available to you as the main tab. You can also create and manage bookmarks, so that you can easily find your favorite sites.

A simple tap of the screen will beam the chosen content to your selected player, such as your Airplay enabled, UPnP or DLNA certified device. The beaming mode in Twonky Beam Browser can be toggled on and off, allowing you to use the application to discover and enjoy content locally on your tablet or phone.

One of the best ways to use Twonky Beam Browser is with Internet video, but it also works with audio and photos. You can also create playlists with a queue of multiple selections that will play continuously in the order you added them, or you can change the order and delete items from your queue. It is always possible to continue browsing, either on the current site or another site, while your media plays on the device.

What’s New in Version 3.4.1

• Download media from Internet or home media servers
• Download DTCP-IP protected media from DTCP-IP enabled recorder or media server

Evernote security breach and mass password reset

It was widely reported yesterday that Evernote had a security breach, and as a result they reset everyone’s passwords. They have now emailed everyone to explain more.

evernote5_icon-100016847-large

This is the email Evernote sent to all its customers:

Evernote’s Operations & Security team has discovered and blocked suspicious activity on the Evernote network that appears to have been a coordinated attempt to access secure areas of the Evernote Service.

As a precaution to protect your data, we have decided to implement a password reset. Please read below for details and instructions.

In our security investigation, we have found no evidence that any of the content you store in Evernote was accessed, changed or lost. We also have no evidence that any payment information for Evernote Premium or Evernote Business customers was accessed.

The investigation has shown, however, that the individual(s) responsible were able to gain access to Evernote user information, which includes usernames, email addresses associated with Evernote accounts, and encrypted passwords. Even though this information was accessed, the passwords stored by Evernote are protected by one-way encryption. (In technical terms, they are hashed and salted.)

While our password encryption measures are robust, we are taking steps to ensure your personal data remains secure. This means that in an abundance of caution, we are requiring all users to reset their Evernote account passwords. Please create a new password by signing into your account on evernote.com.

After signing in, you will be prompted to enter your new password. Once you have reset your password on evernote.com, you will need to enter this new password in other Evernote apps that you use. We are also releasing updates to several of our apps to make the password change process easier, so please check for updates over the next several hours.

As recent events with other large services have demonstrated, this type of activity is becoming more common. We take our responsibility to keep your data safe very seriously, and we’re constantly enhancing the security of our service infrastructure to protect Evernote and your content.

There are also several important steps that you can take to ensure that your data on any site, including Evernote, is secure:

  • Avoid using simple passwords based on dictionary words
  • Never use the same password on multiple sites or services
  • Never click on ‘reset password’ requests in emails – instead go directly to the service

Thank you for taking the time to read this. We apologize for the annoyance of having to change your password, but, ultimately, we believe this simple step will result in a more secure Evernote experience.

EXCLUSIVE Kartuga interview with Philipp Arlt from Ticking Bomb Games

Kartuga_Logo

Kartuga is a browser-based Action MMOG with a gritty pirate backdrop and on a recent trip to the UK, we sat down with Phillip Arlt from Ticking Bomb Games who told us all about it.

Kartuga_Screenshot_12

The title, out to set a new standard of quality in browser games, is based on Unity 3D. Players assume the captain role of a mighty sailing ship. These adventurers fight with or against other players for honor, glory, and loot in a stylized fantasy setting featuring eclectic nautical elements from around the world. Sailing across seas scattered with Mediterranean and oriental influences, players can unite in mighty guilds, acting out the punk-like, rebellious nature of true pirates!

In Kartuga, adventurers set out to become the greatest pirate of all time by constantly improving their ship, its crew and equipment. In order to do that, one must face exciting and demanding tasks and challenges.

Kartuga_Screenshot_7 Kartuga_Screenshot_9

Character Progression: Players are the captain of their ship – and must complete missions and gather loot to level up and improve gear and crew. Only the strongest will survive the seas of Kartuga.

A Vibrant World: Aspiring Captains explore the oceans of Kartuga to gather missions, discover exciting areas and find brethren of the seas. They experience three distinct regions with their own factions, threats, and treasures.

Ship Classes: Players choose between the graceful Destroyer, mighty Protector, or versatile Engineer.

Kartuga_Screenshot_17 Kartuga_Screenshot_23

Grow and Thrive: Earning experience unlocks dozens of skills, ships, and hundreds of items. Pirates pick and play the way that suits them!

Sea Battles: Pirates set the ocean aflame as they test the wit, tactics and agility of their foes.

With about 80 million registered players, Katruga’s publisher, InnoGames is one of the world’s leading developers and providers of online games. The Hamburg based company has scored major successes with games such as Tribal Wars, The West and Grepolis.

Before the interview I got have a play with Kartuga and I rather enjoyed it. I kept choosing the Destroyer class, which wasn’t always the smartest move, and I look forward to playing more soon.

Over to Philipp:

Players can sign up for the closed beta by heading over to www.kartuga.com.

Installing a Z-Wave Nexia System

About a week or so ago, I purchased a Schlage lock, lamp module and Z-Wave bridge, and set up a new Nexia system to control these components.  Here is the story of my installation!

image

About a week or so ago, I purchased a Schlage lock, lamp module and Z-Wave bridge, and set up a new Nexia system to control these components.  In this article, I’ll explain how I came to purchase this system and then walk you through the installation.

Alternatives Considered

I have a Vivant alarm installed in the house.  This alarm system is Z-Wave-based and provides excellent control over the alarm system in the house.  Access to the alarm system via mobile devices is provided by Alarm.Com, and my wife has gotten used to being able to disarm the alarm for babysitters and contractors coming and going from the house.  She wanted to have a solution that allowed her similar control over the lock on the door between the garage and the kitchen, and since the builders’ grade lock on the door was on its last legs, it made sense to look into devices that could be controlled via Z-Wave.

A Z-Wave system consists of a Z-Wave controller, which attaches to your router to give you system access and control over the internet, and Z-Wave devices like locks, window shades, thermostats and lighting modules.  The devices form a Z-Wave wireless mesh network, with all of the devices connected and repeating traffic from the controller.  Installation is a simple process of pairing the new device with the Z-Wave controller, and then configuration of your system using a simple web application.

First up, I looked at adding on some locks to my Vivint account.

Vivint Locks/Alarm.Com Back End

We already use Vivint as the alarm provider, and we are already very happy with the Alarm.Com backend solution that Vivint delivers.  I contacted Vivint and they quoted me $150 per lock, a 52 month extension of my Vivint contract and another $20 or so per month increased fee to add the locks.  We are currently on a month-to-month contract with Vivint, so they wanted us to also pick up the increased alarm monitoring fees as those charges have increased since our contract expired.  In addition, they only offered an entry-level KwikSet lock that did not look as nice as the Yale and Schlage products.  In the end, we decided against Vivint, even after they offered the locks for free; we did not want to extend our contract.

Mi Casa Verde

Mi Casa Verde is a company that will sell you a controller and provide internet access, with no ongoing monthly charges.  You pay upfront for the device and internet access and control is bundled.  The Vera 3 controller runs about $299, but the Vera Lite at $179 looked like it would do the trick.  As long as the devices that you want to control are Z-Wave compatible, Mi Casa Verde will control them and provide you with access and control over the internet.  I opted to pass on Mi Casa Verde as I’ve never installed any Z-Wave devices and I wanted to make sure that the system that I chose had live telephone customer support.  If you are confident about the installation and system configuration, then Mi Casa Verde makes sense.

M Control

M Control is another approach to Z-Wave: it turns your computer or home server into the Z-Wave controller and hosts the remote access web page on that computer.  M Control is supported on Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Home Server v1, Windows Home Server 2011 and Windows Server, and installs a remote access website onto your system, much like the one that is installed by Windows Home Server.  The basic package starts at $179, and provides all that you need to control Z-Wave devices in your home.  I chose to pass on M Control as I don’t really want to install a new web page onto my current Windows Home Server 2011.

Nexia Home Intelligence

I told you about Nexia Home Intelligence here, and I visited with them at CES2013.  This used to be known as Schlage Link, and is Ingersoll Rand’s entry into the home automation space.  With brands such as Schlage and Trane under their corporate umbrella, the idea is to provide a system that allows for control of a broad range of devices across the Ingersoll Rand portfolio.  Remote access to your account is provided by MyNexia.Com, which costs $8.99 per month or $99 per year.  Nexia supports all Z-Wave compatible hardware, giving you the ability to choose the hardware that you want to use yourself.  In addition, Nexia has customer support available, and that proved invaluable to me as a first-time home automation customer.

Home Automation: Z-Wave Alliance Interview

I recently decided to revisit the home automation space to see what options are out there to make it easier to control my home.  Fortunately, when I was out at CES2013 in January, I made some connections to help me to gauge the marketplace. In particular, I want to thank Mark Walters from the Z-Wave Alliance for answering some of my industry questions. Here is the interview, conducted via email, with Mark.

smartphone_zwave1

I recently decided to revisit the home automation space to see what options are out there to make it easier to control my home.  We have an alarm system (from Vivint, using a Z-Wave controller) and three IP cameras, but wanted to look into adding controllable locks and a sun shade for the front foyer window.  I really did not know where to start at first.  One of the confusing issues out there is the choice of home automation platform.  I was was aware of ZigBee, Z-Wave, and wireless solutions like the NEST thermostat, all of which looked interesting.  Fortunately, when I was out at CES2013 in January, I made some connections to help me to gauge the marketplace.  In particular, I want to thank Mark Walters from the Z-Wave Alliance for answering some of my industry questions.  Here is the interview, conducted via email, with Mark.  My questions are in bold, with Mark’s responses indented below.

Interview

1. Home Automation Market:

a. What is the current market size for North America for home automation products?

Frost and Sullivan Research says it is $2,442 Million.

Strategy Analytics says US Smart Home Application Market will be $5 Billion by 2015.

Parks Associates Research says more than 10 million households will have some form of remote monitoring and control system by 2014 up from 3.4 million at the end of 2009.

b. Who is the buyer for these products: contractors or home owners?

Both contractors and homeowners purchase these products. At this time “professional” installation is more predominant over homeowner installation with the large national alarm companies taking the lead.

c. What is the profile of the typical home owner having these products installed?

Mid-income with family.

d.  How critical is this capability to the strategic success of the hardware manufacturers? Do they value the potential for differentiation in what can be seen as a commodity product, or are they supporting home automation capabilities as a wait-and-see approach?

They are embracing an escape from what was a commodity hardware business with new product capabilities and new business models that include “backend” services such as monitoring and cloud serving. An example would be the Schlage Link, now Nexia program.

2. Alarm Companies:

a. My alarm company (Vivint) offers some degree of home automation products, based on a Z-Wave controller in the alarm panel. Why go with the alarm company over a self-install from the consumer’s standpoint?

Some people are not handy and don’t want to spend the time to do it themselves.

You get professional monitoring.

Combines easily with existing alarm (security) offering.

b. How does the hardware manufacturer capture value from the alarm company installation?

They sell the products to the alarm company.

Their brand is on the product.

These are incremental sales, without automation the existing locks would stay in place another 20 years effectively blocking another sale. Automation gets a second sale per door that otherwise would not happen.
