Injustice: Gods Among Us Official Launch Trailer released

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment today released the official launch trailer for the upcoming DC Comics fighting game Injustice: Gods Among Us. Releasing next week on 19^th April, this new trailer gives a look into the game’s original storyline, which includes DC Comics most popular heroes and villains choosing sides in a world where the lines between good and evil have been blurred. In the world of Injustice: Gods Among Us, players must ask themselves – what if our greatest heroes became our greatest threat?

Injustice: Gods Among Us is an all-new game in development by award-winning NetherRealm Studios, creators of the definitive fighting game franchise Mortal Kombat. H-5D 3D Projection System

During my recent visit to The Gadget Show Live at the Birmingham NEC we saw a huge amount of premium quality, and premium priced, kit from the giants of home entertainment. Samsung had a truck that looked like someone had stolen it from a formula one racing team full of 84” 4K televisions. KEF didn’t really need anything to grab your attention anyway, but the £20,000 bright orange speakers pumping out huge volume did the job just fine.

However, amongst all the big name brands, the stand that caught my attention most on my travels was a relatively humble one. Behind me I could hear the unmistakable sound of Bruce Wayne’s hands and feet ruining somebodies day. How can you not go and have a look?

Investigating the commotion soon saw me herded into the stall and 3D glasses appeared in my hand. I’m more than a little sceptical when it comes to 3D and having owned a projector for many years, until televisions became the obvious choice, the thought of a 3D projector really didn’t grab me.

The system was created by an independent UK based company called H-5D. The key components of the system are a Windows 8 gaming PC, a 720p projector and their own magical box, which is roughly the size and shape of an amplifier, assumedly for adding H-5D’s custom 3D-ness.

Despite my scepticism the image that greeted me was very impressive, adding real depth to the action. Arkham City was picked for a reason. When the camera was rotated around the enemies each one came out in front of me and the image really did look very deep indeed.

The promise from H-5D is that the system will take a standard 2D input and convert it to 3D and take 3D inputs and convert to H-5D by increasing depth. Arkham City is 3D enabled so the image I saw must have been in H-5D, which looked absolutely great, but I’d love to see the how well the system works on 2D material.

The main hindrance in watching films or playing games in 3D, even for those who have a capable system, is that there isn’t really that much material in 3D and it’s very rare in a video game. If the H-5D system can deliver its promise and convert 2D to 3D, even if its not as good as native 3D, it would be a great incentive to go 3D.

They are also working on a light gun with a laser on the front so the whole game can be controlled from the gun. Combined with the surround of the 3D and a decent 5.1 home theatre system this could really be very immersive.

Probably the best part of the H-5D equipment is that you pay one price and get everything included, something they were particularly vocal about. And so they should be, the starting system is £3,500 and includes a 720p projector, gaming PC (Windows 8, Intel i3, 8GB RAM, 200GB SSD, NVidia GTX 660 2GB DDR5 GPU), 3 sets of glasses and the laser gun. This is quite a reasonable price compared with other 3D projector systems, especially considering the PC you get with it.

There is a more expensive system for £7,800 which comes with a better PC (Intel i7, 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD, NVidia GTX 690 2GB DDR5 GPU) and triple 720p projectors. Which is definitely still competitive.

I was very impressed with H-5D’s efforts and they definitely punch way above their weight. Competing with the giants isn’t easy and I really hope H-5D get a chance to make their mark in a very competitive market. My personal star of the Gadget Show Live 2013.

O2 Launches O2 Refresh

Today O2 has launched a new tariff that gives customers the flexibility to upgrade their handset at any point during their contract. The O2 price plan comprises two separate deals – one covering usage and the other the cost of the device itself, eliminating the need to pay off the entirety of the contract when they upgrade.

Users who opt for an early upgrade need only pay off the phone plan, with the airtime agreement terminated at no extra cost.

O2 has confirmed that numerous high-end smartphones will be available under the new tariff, including the HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S3, BlackBerry Z10, Sony Xperia T and iPhone 5.

The anticipated Samsung Galaxy S4 will be available on O2 Refresh when it launches in the UK later this month.

Airtime plans are available at between £12 and £20 per month, with tie-in phone deals varying depending on the handset.

Nokia has just released an update to its Lumia 920, 820 and 620 Windows Phones.

The latest software for the Lumia 920 and 820, version 1232.5957.1308.00xx will bring:

improved automatic display brightness adjustment
fix for intermittent screen blanking during a call
further performance and stability improvements.

Additionally, we have published new software update for Nokia Lumia 620 version 1030.6407.1308.00xx, with plenty of reasons for you to update:

VLC media player updated to version 2.0.6 Twoflower

I noticed yesterday that the excellent VLC media player had been updated to version 2.0.6.

2.0.6 is an important update that fixes some regressions of the 2.0.x branch of VLC.

2.0.6 introduces support for Matroska v4 files.

2.0.6 also introduces an important number of fixes for MKV, Ogg, AVI, WMV, HTTPS and subtitles support. Fixes FLAC 6.1/7.1, ALAC, and Intel HD 2000/3000 GPU decoding on Windows are also present.

2.0.6 also improves the Mac OS X, the D-Bus and MPRIS2 interfaces.

2.0.6 uses a new compiler for Windows version, done by the MinGW-w64 project.

With faster decoding on multi-core, GPU, and mobile hardware and the ability to open more formats, notably professional, HD and 10bits codecs, 2.0 was a major upgrade for VLC.

Parrot Confirms IP Conflict With AR Drone 2

A few days ago, I told you that it appeared that Parrot had been made aware of an IP issue with the AR Drone 2.0. Parrot has now confirmed this; read on for details.

Last week, I told you that it appeared that Parrot had been made aware of an IP issue with the AR Drone 2.0, as the Free Flight app for drone control had been pulled from the US Apple app store. Parrot has now confirmed this. Here is the formal announcement provided by their PR firm:

AR.Freeflight 2.2 was removed from iTunes last month due to the need for patents’ clarification on accelerometer and absolute control.

In the meantime, we have enriched AR.Race2 App (version 2.2) with a free piloting mode in order for our customers using iOS devices to continue enjoying flying the Parrot AR.Drone.

This is really unfortunate as this patent dispute goes to the heart of the ease of flight that I enjoy with the absolute control mode. Here is hoping that they reach an agreement soon. If you are a current Parrot AR Drone 2.0 customer using AR.Freeflight, continue to do so. If you have just purchased your AR Drone 2.0, download the AR.Race2 app and use that to fly your drone.

The AR Drone 2.0 is wonderfully fun to fly. My hope is that Parrot will reach a licensing agreement with the patent holder and will resume support for accelerometer control and the absolute control mode soon, as well as delivering the GPS expansion kit that I told you about at CES!
