EXCLUSIVE Puppeteer Interview with Gavin Moore from Japan Studio

Puppeteer was announced to the world at Gamescom last year, and I recently had the chance to play it, and talk with it’s Creative Director, Gavin Moore.

_sony_Artwork_11929main_visual_EN

Puppeteer is a brand new franchise developed exclusively for PlayStation 3 by SCE Japan Studio. Set in a magical puppeteer’s theatre, the game will introduce you to a strange and fantastic world, where the environment is constantly changing. Players will enjoy a rich, dark fairy-tale where surprises lurk around every corner.

One dark moonlit night, a young boy named Kutaro was carried away by the maleficent Moon Bear King to a black castle where the unlucky lad was transformed into a puppet.

Kutaro displeased the terrible tyrant, who devoured the boy’s wooden head and cast away his body.

But the headless hero was not alone, for he had discovered a very special pair of scissors to help him on his harrowing adventure to find his head, and his way home.

Gavin Moore is a Creative Director for Sony Computer Entertainments Japan Studio.

He has spent 20 years honing his craft in video games. Prior to joining Sony, Gavin cut his teeth as a pixel artist and animator at Mindscape, working on classic games machines such as the Amiga, SNES, Megadrive and original Gameboy. He joined SCEE in 1998, where he worked on the hugely successful The Getaway, which sold over 4 million units worldwide. Gavin currently lives and works in Japan, where he has spent the last 9 years immersing himself in Japanese culture and video game creation.

So over to Gavin:

Thank you to Gavin for taking the time to not only talk to me about Puppeteer, but also playing the game with me, which was a lot of fun.

I really enjoyed my time playing Puppeteer, so stay tuned for a preview soon.

Puppeteer will be released on the 11th September 2013 here in the UK and on the 10th September in North America.

Review of the Bennett Leather Laptop Bag by Jill-e Designs

An Apple Store exclusive for the 15” MacBook Pro, the Bennett Leather Laptop Bag from Jill-e Designs let’s you carry your MacBook in style, and here is our review.

CDW Review Jill-e Designs Bennett Leather Messenger Bag - 31

The Bennett bag by Jill-e Designs offers just the right blend of rugged fashion, organisation and access, all while protecting your MacBook from the elements. Created for Apple this padded messenger bag is roomy enough for all your Apple devices, as well as your personal belongings.

Who are Jill-E Designs?

From their website:

Jill-e Designs got its start in 2007, right around the time increasing numbers of women were taking up photography as a career. We became an advocate for every female photographer who’d ever had to put up with the male-oriented look and feel of professional-level camera bags. Soon after, we realized style transcends gender – the male photography lover was trapped in that same stale canvas and nylon world of black and shades of black. So we introduced Jack bags for men.

As personal electronic devices became widespread, Jill-e Designs broadened its view. Today we offer stylish, secure, high-performance bags for today’s tech-driven, mobile lifestyle – great-looking bags for a variety of contemporary uses that meet the high standards for form and function we adopted to satisfy the demanding photo professional. We use the finest materials – top-grade leathers and fabrics, dependable hardware, durable padding and lining – blending them with our “future classic” styling and a little common sense to produce smart, protective, fashion-conscious, quality bags.

Today Jill-e Designs, headquartered in Orlando, Fla., is a multimillion-dollar company whose bags are sold and enjoyed the world over. We’ve changed how modern, on-the-go people think about the role and possibilities of their carry bag – whether for e-gear, career, photo, college, travel or everyday. They’re no longer a utilitarian device for the storage and transport of today’s ubiquitous electronic devices, personal belongings and lifestyle essentials. Bags by Jill-e Designs are “statements” that help establish the user’s unique image and creative credentials, while delivering professional-grade quality and performance.

We understand the power of style – it’s more than a simple indulgence. We capture that power in every one of our bags. Each of our creative designs helps the customer make an extraordinary first impression, while each bag’s construction and features take the customer as far as she or he would like to go. Jill-e Designs offers function on the inside, fashion on the outside, in a lush, durable leather bag that’s hard to beat. So people can look their best while they do their best. And who wouldn’t want that?

Final Thoughts

The first thing I noticed about the Bennett bag was just how well it was packaged. It was wrapped in plastic and in a sturdy box to keep it protected. Most laptop bags either come in plastic or nothing at all, and that usually means that at some point after leaving wherever it has been manufactured and before it gets to you that there is a good chance it may have sustained a little damage. Often it’s only a scuff mark, so nothing too serious, and after all its going to get marked when you use it, but when you are paying the sort of money you are paying for the Bennett you want it to be perfect – and it is! I was also impressed that they included a cloth bag inside as well so that you can store the Bennett when not in use. That was a nice touch.

The Bennett itself looks (and smells) amazing – so much so that like me, you will probably treat it with kid gloves for the first few times you use it.

The front flap with magnetic tab closure provides convenient access to the inside of the bag and it really is easy to open and close in seconds, whilst at the same time keeping the contents of the bag safe and secure. There is also a zip on the front for access to some additional storage.

The inside of the bag looks just as good as the outside with various pockets and areas for storing your MacBook and other stuff. In fact, Jill-e Designs have even embroidered little images on each area to show you what you can store there, such as the laptop and even your sunglasses.

Carrying around various items in the bag felt secure and I was happy with the amount of space I had in – I could carry around everything I needed for the day. It was also very comfortable to carry around, and the strap in adjustable to suit anyone.

There is even a luggage tag provided which is all part of Jill-e Designs’ Registration & Recovery Service, so do take the time to complete that, as it might end up being very useful to you!

Overall it is a very impressive bag, with just the right mixture of fantastic quality, and looking great whilst at the same time protecting your expensive possessions. If you want that mixture of style and protection then look no further than the Bennett bag from Jill-e Designs.

The Bennett is an exclusive creation for Apple and you can only buy it from an Apple Store, and as a result of this fact, and the high quality of the materials used, the Bennett is not cheap. You might want to sit down for the next part – the Bennett will set you back £269.95, so it’s not for the faint hearted, but you do get what you pay for, and if you have that sort of money to spend then the Bennett is certainly a great investment.

God of War: Ascension 1.09 update out includes new Bout of Honor more

0

sony_Screenshots_20954SP04_sm1_thumb

Santa Monica Studio have released a new update to God of War: Ascension taking it to version 1.09.

In Bout of Honor two warriors will put their lives and reputations on the line to achieve the best of seven rounds in this strictly 1v1 Mode. Bout of Honor is a true contest of skill with no chests, fountains, or world weapons to aid you. This mode also disables relics and allows for a Champion’s Magic to regenerate over time. Beware, my brothers in arms, Magic generates slowly over time so use it sparingly. If you are careless you may end up like the Prophet Castor with your head underneath another Warrior’s boot.

OVERALL FEATURE ENHANCEMENTS

New 1v1 Mode – Bout of Honor!
Kill your enemy or spill the most blood before the sands of time run out in our new free 1v1 Mode. Fight one-on-one matches in 4 new levels designed specifically like a traditional fighting game. There are also 5 new Feats for you to accomplish. Match-up against a friend, or challenge your skills against all opponents online.

  • 4 New Maps
    • Canyons of Kirra

    • Dominator: Win 3 rounds without losing a round

    • Unwavering: Win 3 rounds when you are 3 rounds behind

New 4 Player Map – Whirlpool of Alecto!
Supporting 4 player Match of Champions and Team Favor of the Gods, beware the whirlpool of chaos and monstrous Leviathan lurking within this map.

COMBAT BALANCE UPDATES & FIXES

All / Misc Spears

  • Air triangle move has had its range and timing slightly improved. It should now be more viable from a distance, and also air to ground.
  • The spear delay square attack has had its ranged appropriately increased so it should be a more viable mix up option for a quick/go-to unblockable, especially in 1v1 play.

Blade of Poseidon

  • Fixed a bug where the air version of the triangle special would occasionally play no effect but still hit opponents (occasionally recovery could also be unfairly cancelled.)

Blade of Zeus

  • The start-up time of the L1 triangle in the air is now closer to its ground counterpart

Juggles, Hit Reactions / Misc

  • The frames where players were allowed to cancel and recover from hit-stun during certain extended combos have been adjusted to allow players to escape as intended.
  • This was also the existing functionality, however in certain occasions of lag or low performance, that window was extended which would allow both players to combo when they shouldn’t have, and for players to escape when they should be getting combo’d. This has been adjusted to be consistent across the board.
  • A bug has also been fixed where players would appear to glow white / invulnerable, but they were not technically invulnerable/ in a recovery state yet. The visuals now match the functionality.

Infinite / 1 –hit Combos

  • Several 1-hit combos have been adjusted to prevent “re-juggling” of opponents mid combo string. The hits themselves will stand land, however they will cause a reset-hit rather than a re-juggle. This only affects a handful of weapons, and specific combos.

Poseidon Hammer Stats

  • Adjusted the stats slightly of the Poseidon armor. It was giving slightly too much physical resist

Preview of The Raven – Legacy of a Master Thief from Nordic Games

Nordic Games will be releasing its three chapter adventure game The Raven – Legacy of a Master Thief shortly, and we had the chance to preview episode one.

raven_game_2013-07-04_10-28-01-24

Set across 1960’s Europe, The Raven – Legacy of a Master Thief is a fast-paced point and click adventure journeying through thrilling and dense atmospheres with the aim of catching the art burglar, the raven. Players follow the Raven’s trademark black feather clues to capture the thief and to protect a legendary sapphire, the “Eye of the Sphinx” on its journey from Switzerland to Egypt. This criminal tale – full of twists and turns – immerses the player in both sides of the story, the investigators’, as well as the thief’s, thereby combining elements of ‘Whodunit’ with a Heist story.

In a nutshell The Raven is a point and click adventure story where you get to choose what happens by clicking on one of the various options given to you.

Throughout the chapters are a large number of cut-scenes which explain to the player what is going on, and sets up the next part of the adventure – you can click through them if you want, however you will miss vital clues!

raven_game_2013-07-04_10-43-21-35

One thing I really liked is that when my character picked something up, other characters around him were aware of what he had in his hand, also the game deals very well with other objects – there is no putting a large object in your pocket when in reality you couldn’t do it!

The Raven is also aimed at different types of players. If you are a seasoned player you can take on optional puzzles, where as if you are a novice you get a notebook and a lot of help, so don’t worry, there is something for everyone.

The plot moved along very quickly, I didn’t feel that there was any real filler, so there is a lot to do, and you shouldn’t feel bored.

The music works very well in the game, helping to create an atmosphere that instantly makes you think of Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot.

There is also an Interactive Graphic Novel which is available now so for those who can’t wait for chapter one to be released you can play this free to play game right now. It is essentially a prequel to the main game and allows you to discover the back story to the bitter rivalry between The Raven and his pursuer detective Legrand.

Raven IGN

If you want to give it a go, and it’s worth it, visit the Interactive Graphic Novel here.

In the preview build of chapter one there were a few minor bugs, however I am assured that all these will be sorted in time for the release later this month, so no drama there!

I enjoyed playing chapter one, it had a very interesting story and really drew me in, I look forward to chapter two! Check back soon for our full review of the first chapter.

raven_game_2013-07-04_10-59-48-42

The first chapter will be released for download on the 23rd July via steam for PC, Mac and even Linux. It will be available via Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network a little later in the summer, so if you would prefer to play it on a console then you shouldn’t have too long to wait.  The second chapter is due for release on the 27th August and the third and final chapter is due on the 24th September. There is also a boxed edition with all three chapter due for release on the 24th October.

Review of Hotline Miami From Devolver Digital

Much like the 2d top down shooters of yesteryear, Hotline Miami imposes itself in a blaze of 80’s style glory. Undeniably old school and proud of it, the good folks over at Dennation Games have brought the 80’s cult violence back, complete with soundtrack and surreal storylines, can it hold it’s own as a new release?

11924Hotline_Miami_4

If character relationship is a biggie for you, then be forewarned, you won’t find much here. ‘Jacket’ as the community have come to know him as at least, is your protagonist. The premise of the game involves listening to cryptic answer machine messages, arriving at the target destination and slaughtering everyone inside. How you go about it, is the inevitable draw. There are often multiple enemies to engage, all as weak as each other, get hit once however, and it’s game over for you too. Baddies can be dispatched via various means, a stealthy approach often works wonders but is slow in pace, whereas a guns blazing form might clear the level in seconds but could result in many more retries and potentially a lower score.

Controls are pretty much standard affair, aim with one stick, gad about with the other, a lock on button is available, but I found manual aim a little less sticky. Combined with guns, of which you can only hold what’s in the magazine, ranged attacks can also be be performed with certain melee weapons. Of course, flinging what is essentially your only attacking weapon across the map only for it to fall harmlessly against a wall is going to do you no favours.

11925Hotline_Miami_5

Weapons are plentiful to stumble across and seem randomly selected per spawn, so usually the best approach is to have an open mind regarding each combat situation. Enemies tend to either patiently patrol their route or sit in one place until disturbed. When disturbed however, they can and will bum rush you to death! Instantly homing in on the player should you get caught bashing a door open unnecessarily. Luckily, re-spawning is almost instant and lets you play in a more freeing manner. It can occasionally come down to trial and error at times but if you aren’t playing for the highest achievable score, that shouldn’t be an issue.

Presentation is handled with the deft hands of nostalgia in mind. The top down shooter has of course been replicated before, but usually incorporating modern mechanics, this is more of a back to basics approach complete with tricky lines of sight, very low health and manual…well everything! There are two variables up to the player to make it a little less punishing, the first, is upon completing each level, you unlock a mask to equip along with a subtle hint to whether it’s an advantageous effect or not. The other relies on levelling up as you unlock more weapons that can potentially spawn in the game.

11927Hotline_Miami_7

Initially Hotline comes across as a short game taking just a few hours to complete, the real longevity lies within how much effort you want to put in to attain the highest ranks. No mean feat by any standard! Interestingly, for a PSN title, a full trophy list is also present, platinum and all.

Graphically stylised to represent the famed arcade machines of some decades back, the colour palette is garish, the music entrancing and the plot, headache inducing. Hotline Miami epitomises the once golden era and transfers it beautifully to the current generation.

Tritton Pro+ Review Part II

To me film and games without a decent sound system are pointless. That little double D symbol makes all the difference and Tritton know this. The Tritton Pro+’s (and their predecessors the Tritton AX PRO’s) are one of very few headsets that can boast a true 5.1 surround sound system. Other headsets do a great job mimicking the surround experience, and for gaming it is even seen as an advantage, giving you access to digital balancing methods beyond that of a conventional 5.1 system. But seen as we have a true 5.1 headset what’s the point in limiting the Pro+’s only to games?

Even as I write this any potentially irritated neighbours are undisturbed by the enormous bass pounding my ears. In fact, the potential of the bass created by the Pro+’s is enough that you can even feel the air move like a proper sub. If the Pro+’s had a week point, it would definitely be music; but they still perform very, very well. Bass is defined but fat, adding adequate punch wherever it may be needed. High frequencies still don’t get muddled though and no noticeable clarity is lost during pacier moments. So, the Pro+’s can handle a stereo or Pro Logic feed very well. From my previous experience with Trittons I was ready to be impressed, but was still surprised at how well they handled something they weren’t particularly designed for. Lets get some proper Dolby 5.1 on the go!

PROplus_black_007

Turning to a film; explosions, gunshots and punches are full and rounded but never lose focus. Voices and shattered glass stay clear and manage to create space during busy action. It’s amazing how soundtrack, dialogue and sound effects all fit into such a small physical space and simultaneously avoid tripping over each other. One of the best things is the relief of not worrying about sound pollution. Admittedly this won’t effect everyone but I know I find it frustrating constantly turning volume up during dialogue and then having an explosion irritate everyone in my house. The Pro+’s are certainly a better solution than using dynamic range compression and potentially spoiling those nice, loud action sequences. Having the power and finesse of a proper 5.1 sound system in a headset is truly liberating.

Although the Pro+’s where designed for gaming, the necessity of comfort over long periods of time was clearly integral to their design. The new rotating cups and a shaped corner allow them to snugly and securely fit over your ears. Even after 2 hours I had no discomfort at all. I genuinely forgot I even had them on at certain points. Despite this comfort being predominantly designed for gaming sessions it’s nice for watching films too.

The Tritton Pro+’s are great for video games but they can be so much more. What you have is a portable 5.1 sound system that’s more than capable of high quality sound output with just about anything you feed them. To get anywhere near this quality of sound in a home cinema system you’re budget would need to be much more than £150. I have a decent mid-range system, nothing to boast about, but decent. Anyone else with a surround system will know, I’ve probably spent at least as much as a pair of Trittons on wiring alone over the years.

I also happen to have a pair of the old Tritton AX Pro’s and the Pro+’s are a noticeable improvement, especially where build quality, ease of use and comfort are concerned. Whether you are looking to upgrade your headset or complement your home cinema system the Tritton Pro+’s have to be tempting choice. For gamers and film buffs alike the Pro+’s offer great audio quality, especially at this price bracket. If your serious about games and have the money, buy these. You won’t be disappointed.

CDW-Rating-Banner-black-5

Tritton Pro+ Review Part I

The Tritton Pro+’s, how do they stack up in the competitive world of gaming, where every edge counts?

There’s a unique, almost ambivalent feeling of being sarcastically stabbed in the back on an FPS. Hate and embarrassment course through, whilst you simultaneously curse and pray that nobody bared witness to such an event. In come the Tritton Pro+’s. Let’s hope they can make that a thing of the past and finally answer truthfully if you can really hear footsteps coming up behind you.

True 5.1 surround sound is the selling point here; rather than mess about digitally emulating directional noise, Madcatz have opted for surely the most logical solution to having eyes in the back of your head, add more speakers! With four Neodymium drivers in each cup, (front, center, surround and sub) directional placement is defined and accurate.

feature-details-3-black

What with the Pro+’s being, primarily, designed for gaming, it’s slightly nonplussing to discover there are no downloadable pre-sets such as the rival Turtle Beach lines. However instead, we are gifted with a truly customisable inline volume controller, with each of the four speaker levels able to be be altered relative to one another. Meaning that, should grenades lack that little extra oomph, the bass can be increased to almost inordinately head squeezing levels; the rear speakers, after being thrown up a few notches, will make you swivel like a paranoid ballerina in full swing.

Even at their uppermost volume, which I don’t recommend you stay on for too long for obvious pain-related reasons, the Tritton’s don’t seem to distort. Crystal clear and punchy audio envelops what little space surrounds your ears; subtle game audio cues are amplified to the point of wondering how you’d never heard them before. The sound of a grenade pin being pulled or the cheeky blip of a claymore the instant before it takes your legs off are surprisingly sharp and noticeable. Not so clichéd subtleties are also present such as the bewildering inclusion of flies buzzing around on certain Black Ops 2 maps, it’s astonishing how much audio can be missed without such fidelity.

PROplus_black_001

The ability to adjust on the fly with this headset to your own specific needs, is to it’s benefit. Being able to alter in game volumes on a per speaker level is hugely advantageous. Combine this with modifying the chat level independently and you’re in full control. Lowering the chat volume when in a lobby of reprobates can leave you grinning in blissful ignorance to the profanities of your fallen prey, whilst still being able to keep an ear out.

Take it off mute for a second though and the clarity of online voice chat is in a different league to any ear buds or television speakers around. Microphone quality is also several strides above par, picking up very little background noise if adjusted properly. Selectable Voice Monitoring (SVM) is a nice feature, providing feedback of your voice through the cups. I feel a little self conscious if I can’t hear myself talking so I generally leave this on! A simple depress of the chat volume button will toggle it off and on should you wish. A point of note is that not only is the mic almost infinitely adjustable due to it’s malleable nature, but it can also be completely detached leaving you with a snazzy pair of cans for relaxing with a film or some music.

PROplus_black_006

Comfort levels are beyond my expectations. The cushioning at the head band let’s it fit all styles of head without it cuddling you so hard it brings on a headache; the cups envelop your ears, lobe and all, to give a satisfying fit. Even during a hardcore (gaming) session, if anything, they seem to get comfier and, aside from some hot ears, they’re barely noticeable after a while.

Everything you need to get setup is included; plugging it all in shouldn’t take more than a few minutes once you’ve pried everything out of the gloriously over engineered box. Only one AC socket is required this time around and wires are kept to a minimum, except the headset cable of course, which is a healthy 12ft. leaving you plenty of dancing space before wrenching your hi-fi stand apart.

They may not sound as good as a high end surround sound system, but then they are a fraction of the cost in comparison. They also may not turn average Joe into the next big YouTube star, but they’ll certainly help him along the way. What they are then, are a bit like glasses for your ears. They’ll help you hear the little details you never knew were there, but you’d have to know how to listen in the first place; those that know how to take advantage of that will become better players because of it. And yes, you really can hear footsteps behind you.

Review of Magic 2014 from Wizards of the Coast

0

Being a former Magic: The Gathering card collector there’s quite a lot of appeal to a video game that not only localizes all the booster packs but also vastly reduces the cost of such a habit. It’s also nice to have the often complicated rule set firmly enforced by software.

The first thing that becomes unavoidably obvious is the fact that, on the PS3 at least, is that while your internet connection is enabled the game won’t work. Admittedly this can probably be fixed with a patch but it’s inexcusable that the game crashes the console completely and your internet connection must be turned off in the XMB settings. Despite a potential fix in the patch that has been released the problem persists. This is not exactly a great first impression and an inexcusable problem. I can live with minor glitches, especially before release, but this isn’t really a minor problem and as of today (11/07/13) still no fix has been provided.

PSN_EN_PAX_3

So, internet connection disabled, you can finally arrive at the main menu. The usual options of single player, multiplayer and a deck manager present themselves. The deck manager seems quite confusing at first and takes a bit of time to figure out how to use it. Once you do it can be quite entertaining but as you can only view the decks you have unlocked in the single player campaign there aren’t a huge amount of options open to you. Card swaps can be made here and there but the deck will still predominately be the one you started with and full customization isn’t allowed.

Not that that’s necessarily a bad thing. The decks you get given contain some fantastically powerful cards the likes of which I never saw in my days of collecting. For those who wish to build a deck from scratch and put their own mark on the game a new game mode has been added, “Sealed Play”. Sealed Play offers players a random selection of cards to build a deck with. Once your deck is built you can proceed to do battle with various other Planeswalkers and occasionally win extra booster packs. It sounds like a great mode and like it could in fact be the main way to play the game. But there aren’t enough options for any real sense of progression or personalisation.

The same goes for the campaign mode. You duel with various Planeswalkers with your deck and if you win you get a card to add to your deck. Bearing in mind the deck has already been given to you rather than created by you. I found this frustrating not really because the decks are bad but often because they’re good! There’s a satisfaction to be had from creating your own deck and perfecting it. If you can’t find good deck customization in Magic then where are you going to find it?

There is a decent tutorial which should help novices get up to speed and the tooltips that you can view on any card at any point in battle are invaluable. It’s short enough that most shouldn’t fall asleep but informative nonetheless. It does feel a little bit like it holds your hand for those who know the world of Magic but I felt that overall a good balance was struck between being informative and being dull.

Visually speaking the game’s UI is similar to previous instalments. This is definitely an area I’m glad Stainless Games have left reasonably unaltered. Everything is clear to see and many of the animations can be turned off to make matches quicker. The only slight grumble I have is that some of the views of the table where less zoomed out in previous games and I found it easier to see everything at once. And whoever decided that pressing left and right on the d-pad should shift the view to your opponent’s view needs to be sacked. On a game that is almost entirely menu based why can’t I use my d-pad?! Looking over my opponents shoulder really helps me in no way at all. Maybe I can alter this setting in the options. No chance.

A good looking and slightly updated addition to Wizards of the Coast’s ever increasing roster of video games. Unfortunately game modes that sounded clever and entertaining are almost entirely joyless due to lack of deck customization and a frustratingly limiting system of acquiring new cards. In fact it’s so limiting that the only real way I can see to earn new cards and improve decks is by paying for unlocks with real cash.

I know the micro transaction model has worked very well for certain games but in Magic 2014 it feels a little bit like pay-to-win to me. You can perhaps acquire cards easily online but unfortunately I don’t know because it simply doesn’t work on the version that was given to us. This is the first time in the six years or so of the PS3 that I have encountered a problem this bad that hasn’t been fixed. Perhaps it’s just the version I was provided with but it was directly from the PSN and I have tested it on several PS3’s and repeatedly attempted to reinstall it to no avail.

There is some enjoyment to be had out of Magic 2014. The gameplay itself is superb and the AI really pushes you to the limit. Animations are slick and a great UI makes it easy to follow, and keep up with, the flow of the game. Lack of decent deck customization options (and working online) greatly limit Magic and make progression slow and painful, if not non-existent.
