Emerson announced a new cellular home monitoring system today at the Showstoppers Media Reception at CES2014, adding water leakage alarm capability via cellular service.  Leveraging the Verizon cellular network and providing a mobile device app capability, this is a nice product line extension for Emerson.  Here is the press release:

HomeSitter Cellular Home Monitoring System From Emerson

Minneapolis, Minnesota – January 7, 2014 – Protecting your home while you’re away just got a lot easier thanks to the new HomeSitter Cellular Home Monitoring System from Emerson Control Products.

For more than 25 years, Emerson Control Products has been protecting homes with their land line based FreezeAlarm, WaterAlarm and HomeSitter products. Today, Emerson Control Products introduces the HomeSitter Cellular Monitoring System with text, email and phone alert notification that will be available for sale in Spring, 2014.

The HomeSitter Cellular Monitoring System combines the HomeSitter Cellular Monitoring Device and Wireless Sensors with a powerful, yet easy to use cloud based application that allows a homeowner to monitor temperature, humidity, power status and presence of water throughout their home or business. If problems do occur with temperature or humidity extremes, the power goes out or if a water leak is detected, the device sends an alert to the cloud and the homeowner is notified by text, email or phone call.

Emerson Control Products has collaborated with Novatel Wireless for cellular modems, Taoglas for antennas and Verizon to deliver an affordable home monitoring system with no long term contract, activation fees or complex setup. The HomeSitter Cellular Monitoring System comes with three months of access to monitor and receive alert notifications about their home via the homeowner’s computer, tablet or smart phone web application. Additional months of service can be purchased for as low as $9.00 per month.

Wireless sensor pucks are called “SPucks” because of their round, 2” diameter design. The HomeSitter Cellular Monitoring System can monitor up to 16 wireless SPucks to monitor for water leaks and for temperature monitoring in other areas of a home or business. SPucks have a long life battery that will last for up to five years. Additional SPucks are in development to monitor the wider temperature ranges of freezers and refrigerators as well as motion sensors to detect if an object has been moved.

Chuck Guerin, Director of Global Sales for Emerson Control Products estimates the HomeSitter Cellular Monitoring System has a lot more growth potential than the company’s legacy FreezeAlarms and WaterAlarms. Guerin says, “The HomeSitter Cellular Monitoring System could be called the Internet of Protecting Things since it opens up entire new markets such as unoccupied real estate, computer server rooms, commercial monitoring of walk-in freezers and refrigerators for food safety and agricultural applications to monitor potential freezing temperatures just to name a few”.

The technology behind the HomeSitter Cellular Monitoring System is impressive without being complex. Simply register the HomeSitter on-line and set up an account. Next, plug in the HomeSitter Cellular Monitoring device to a power outlet. The HomeSitter automatically connects to the cellular wireless network and starts communicating to the cloud application. A lithium, rechargeable battery keeps the product working even if the power is out and it notifies you when power is restored.

According to the Institute for Business and Home Safety, water leaks from washing machines, failed sump pumps or pipe breakage are the leading causes of damage to a home with the average claim after deductible of $5,092. Claims from frozen pipes were roughly double that of normal water damage claims per incident. State Farm estimates it costs about $50,000 to clean up a mold-contaminated home. The HomeSitter Cellular Home Monitoring System gives homeowners peace of mind knowing they will be notified of problems before disaster costs them thousands of dollars.

The HomeSitter Cellular Monitoring System will be available for sale this spring. To learn more about the HomeSitter Cellular Home Monitoring System, click on www.homesittercellular.com for the product page or see all of our products at www.protectedhome.com.

Emerson Control Products is a business unit of Emerson Electric Corporation of St. Louis, MO. Since 1987, Emerson Control Products has been manufacturing and distributing FreezeAlarms, WaterAlarms and HomeSitters through electronics and hardware stores and on-line retailers.

culbuto_pkg

LaCie announced a fun USB key called the Culbuto today at CES.  The Culbuto has a weighted base and also includes a handy business card holder in the cap.  Here is the press release:

LaCie Culbuto USB Key Takes Users for a Whirl

LAS VEGAS – Today, LaCie announced the Culbuto™, a quirky USB key brought to life by French designer Constance Guisset. When not connected to a computer, the LaCie™ Culbuto whimsically bobs side to side as it is poked – much like a roly-poly toy. In fact, the name Culbuto is French for a toy with a weighted base that keeps the object vertical even after it is knocked down.

“The search for movement and balance is essential in my work,” said Constance Guisset, product designer. “Repeated and infinite oscillation fascinates me. For my first project with LaCie, I proposed a slightly roly-poly key that eventually became LaCie Xtremkey. When LaCie asked me to develop this idea, Culbuto was the result. It’s an irresistibly fun USB key.”

The LaCie Culbuto is a storage device disguised as a decorative object. It has a spherical solid metal base topped with a silicone rubber stem that ends with a USB 3.0 connector. On its top, a cap that closes off the LaCie Culbuto features a slit to hold a photo or business card. Design-conscious consumers will appreciate both the speed benefits of USB 3.0 and the key’s additional purpose as a whimsical picture holder when not in use.

Molded from a cast, the LaCie Culbuto’s “soft touch” rubber gives a pleasant feeling to the fingers. When set on a surface, the USB key will spark conversation as it dances along the tabletop. Watch the video to see the key in action:

Software Suite Included

LaCie’s Private-Public software protects confidential data stored on the LaCie Culbuto. Even in the case of loss, theft or unauthorized access, files are secure with password protection. In addition, the key comes equipped with LaCie Backup Assistant for automatic backup.

Availability

The LaCie Culbuto is available in 16GB and 32GB capacities through the LaCie Online Store and LaCie Resellers starting at $49.99.

Nexia has announced a new thermostat capable of acting as a Z-Wave controller, support for FortrezZ water alarm products, and the addition of garage door openers to the system at CES2014.  Here is the press release:

Nexia™ Home Intelligence Unveils Comprehensive Line-up of Seven New Automation Offerings at 2014 International CES

Cloud-based home automation platform launches first-of-its-kind thermostat and a new collection of products compatible with most Z-wave devices and services that help consumers control their homes from anywhere at anytime

DAVIDSON, N.C.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Nexia™ Home Intelligence, today’s leading home automation system and a brand of Ingersoll Rand, is launching a series of ground-breaking innovations at the International CES tradeshow. From the first-ever thermostat with a bridge-on-board feature that lets homeowners remotely manage and control their residences via the web from a smartphone, tablet, or computer to remote diagnostics capabilities for heating and cooling systems, Nexia is giving homeowners the power to connect to their homes—anytime, anywhere—like never before.

In a first for the home automation industry, Nexia has collaborated with Trane to produce the Trane XL824 Smart Control, the first thermostat to feature a built-in home automation gateway. Featuring the Nexia Home Bridge, the thermostat has the ability to communicate with 230 Z-Wave products throughout the home. The new touchscreen thermostat is designed to work on all standard HVAC systems and can alert homeowners if the system isn’t working properly. As a result, consumers can rectify issues remotely, giving residents peace of mind and ultimate operational efficiency. The thermostat will be available in February through local Trane dealers.

“Nexia™ Home Intelligence brings a legacy of innovation to its growing suite of home automation products, making it possible for homeowners to spend more time on what matters most in their lives,” said Matt McGovren, brand manager for Nexia Home Intelligence. “We are poised to continue to play a key role in the evolution of home automation technology in 2014. As people increasingly look to run their homes from their Internet-enabled smartphones, tablets, or desktops, we’re looking forward to helping homeowners streamline and simplify tasks with our new product launches.”

These new products and services provide Nexia subscribers with more robust integration and increased functionality than ever before. They were developed along with leading consumer electronics brands, including Trane, American Standard and Samsung.

Highlights of these innovations include:

  • Nexia’s capability to provide full support for FortrezZ Z-Wave water sensors and valves, providing homeowners with the peace of mind that their homes are protected from water damage with the help of an automatic shut-off valve that can be activated remotely when water is detected.
  • Nexia support of a Linear Garage Door Controller that enables homeowners to operate their garages remotely to ensure complete safety and security. This feature was developed in direct response to the fact that 85 percent of all Nexia subscribers requested that Z-Wave-certified garage door monitoring be added to Nexia’s current offering.
  • Nexia support of a new option that goes beyond existing indoor and outdoor cameras — the Samsung Techwin Camera. Featuring luminance sensors that detect light levels and switch to night vision mode automatically, the camera produces high-quality images in resolution of up to 640 x 480.
  • A convenient dashboard that lets homeowners keep tabs easily on their energy production. This feature was developed in collaboration with Enphase Energy, a national leader in home solar technology and the world’s number one provider of microinverter systems.
  • Remote diagnostics capabilities for Trane and American Standard dealers beginning spring 2014.
  • An early glimpse into Nexia’s integrated functionality that will enable consumers to control their GE Connected Ovens remotely, providing consumers with the convenience of pre-heating their ovens safely from afar. In addition, it will be designed to inform individuals when their food is ready, which enables busy homeowners to turn off their oven when inadvertently left on.

Since launching as a home automation pioneer more than five years ago, Nexia has continued to build upon its dedication to its subscriber base with best-in-class support services, designed to balance convenience and functionality. This commitment will be reinforced with the introduction of a more robust user experience, featuring push notifications and remote mobile enrollment, which will be offered by Nexia’s revamped web and mobile apps that are launching Q2 2014 for the iOS and Android platforms. In addition, Nexia’s new Programmable On-Wall Controller, which can be programmed easily on the web and mounted anywhere in the home to control what is most important to consumers, will ensure heightened functionality that is easy and simple.

This is an interesting product; think Chromecast from Comcast, pre-loaded with Comcast set top box software and streaming apps.  While Cable Card was clunky and hard to get to work correctly, a USB dongle set top box running Android streaming apps might just work!

“We leveraged our core competencies in home networking — ease of use and high-end design — to offer capabilities in Ocuity Wireless IP Cameras that go beyond video,” said Michael Clegg, senior vice president and general manager for Service Provider Business at NETGEAR. “The Ocuity Family expands our product portfolio so we are better able to address the needs of service providers who are looking for a complete, integrated home monitoring solution to offer their subscribers.”

Bold, Next-Generation Features of Ocuity 500

Ocuity 500 is the first camera designed to extend the functionality of home monitoring and automation systems to go beyond video event alerts. In addition to offering advanced video options, it includes an occupancy sensor, a security sensor, and a communication device.

Sound and video motion detection algorithms in the Ocuity 500 sense occupancy and initiate video based on distinct audio triggers such as breaking glass and loud noises. A microphone with echo cancellation and built-in speaker enables both security and health-and-wellness checks. Parents can even talk with their kids through a virtual intercom created by an app linking Ocuity 500 to their smartphones.

The Ocuity 500 is also the industry’s first IP camera of its type with modular mounting capability for intelligent accessories. The MagnaFast™ magnetic mounting system enables one camera to work with a complete range of adaptable, temporary mounting solutions, eliminating cable clutter and the need for tools. Wall, ceiling, desk, shelf, pan, tilt, and tri-pod — the Ocuity 500 can be moved and mounted in seconds where, when, and how it is needed. For example, the nanny-cam or pet-cam that has a logical position during a “normal” day may have a more desirable location when no one is at home, and the tri-pod option combined with Ocuity 500’s rechargeable battery means parents can keep an eye on the kids playing in the back yard. This dynamic configuration capability of Ocuity 500 also enables it to detect the base on which it is mounted and instantaneously present those positioning and control capabilities to the homeowner.

The Ocuity 500 comes with a built-in rechargeable battery that supports two hours of streaming video, maintaining a complete video record even through power outages. Multiple power management modes maximize battery life in different applications. It even includes a Micro SD card slot for expandable memory to protect video should the network connection become compromised, automatically synching later with remote network attached storage or cloud storage solutions.

“NETGEAR is using data analytics to extend the capabilities of its high-definition WiFi camera by converting unstructured audio and video streams into a high-quality motion and glass break sensor,” said Tom Kerber, director of research on Home Controls & Energy with Parks Associates, a market research and consulting firm focused on residential product and service segments (www.parksassociates.com). “Multi-function sensors will play an important role within the connected home, enhancing the capabilities of energy management, security, home health monitoring, and safety systems.”
