Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Game for 30th Anniversary Edition

1

Don’t Panic! In a special celebration of all things “Hitchhiker’s”, BBC Radio 4 Extra is bringing listeners the brand new 30th Anniversary Edition of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Game online and broadcasting series one and two, ‘The Primary and Secondary Phase”, on the radio.

Both will launch on Saturday 8th March 2014, thirty-six years to the day since Hitchhiker’s first ever radio broadcast and thirty years since the invention of the award winning game.

The global multi-media success story that is “Hitchhiker’s” started life as a BBC Radio 4 series in March 1978. The original scripts by the late Douglas Adams went on to spawn a series of novels, a feature film, at least three stage shows, a TV series, a collection of comic books – and various towels.

hitchhikers-guide-to-the-galaxy-game

The game was originally devised in 1984 by the book’s author Douglas Adams and Steve Meretzky from Infocom. Notoriously difficult and full of oddities it was one of the best-selling games of its era .

The 20th anniversary edition of the game launched on Radio 4’s website in 2004. Over 3million moves were made in the game in its first 3 days of launch and over 50million moves had been played within six months. It went on to win a BAFTA for ‘Best Online Entertainment’ and to this day some fans of the game can still be found playing this ageing version online.

The 30th Anniversary specially updated version of the game will allow users to share their achievements with friends over social media via the official twitter feed @h2g2game.

The world’s most devious game will now be in High Definition thanks to refreshed illustrations and graphics. It is a web-based game and will be accessible via Radio 4 Extra’s website. Players can take the game on the move as it will be compatible with tablets and other internet enabled devices.

BBC Radio 4 Extra also proudly presents series one and two of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy on air. It has been over 10 years since these programmes were last heard on BBC Radio and they perfectly accompany the game. Actions within the game follow the plot of the radio series and some puzzles are only solvable by players with knowledge of the programmes and story.

Caroline Raphael, Commissioning Editor for Radio 4 Extra, says: “Douglas was a true visionary and in his own glorious way foresaw all the technology we now take for granted. Radio 4 Extra is delighted to host this game alongside the first two series. Hitchhiker’s fans will be rewarded for their loyalty over the years and newer fans have a real, but fiendish, treat in store.  March 8th is a special day for the Galaxy so help us celebrate it in the unique way that only BBC Radio 4 Extra can.”

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, BBC Radio 4 Extra, Series 1 & 2, begins Saturday 8th March, 6.00-6.30pm.
Further episodes will follow weekly (e.g. episode 2, Saturday 15th March, 6.00-6.30pm).
Series 1 is titled ‘The Primary Phase’- there are 6 episodes (referred to as ‘Fits’)
Series 2 is titled ‘The Secondary Phase’- there are 6 episodes (referred to as ‘Fits’)

Review of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti Graphics Card

NVIDIA have just released it’s new first generation Maxwell based graphics card, the GeForce GTX 750 Ti, and here is our review.

CDW Review NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 750Ti - 5

The GeForce GTX 750 Ti is designed to deliver the horsepower necessary to drive today’s most demanding titles in full 1080p HD. It delivers 25% more performance than previous generation cards and up to twice the power efficiency thanks to the new Maxwell architecture.

Maxwell

This is what NVIDIA says about Maxwell:

Screen Shot 2014-02-23 at 17.10.37

Efficiency is all about doing more with less. The way we achieved better efficiency in Maxwell is by increasing the utilization of our cores. This increases computation.

With Kepler, the SM contained control logic that routed and scheduled traffic for 192 cores. This was complex for a single piece of control logic. With Maxwell, we divided the SM into four blocks, each with its own piece of control logic. The control logic now manages 32 cores instead of 192, making its task much simpler.

By breaking up one giant problem of the control logic doing the scheduling and threading on each SM into smaller work, and by performing the global partitioning in software, we were able to design the chip to be more efficient. As a result, we’ve actually increased the amount of peak performance per core by 35% when compared to the cores in chips built with the previous generation Kepler architecture.
Since we are using less overall cores to get more performance, less power is ultimately used, increasing the performance/watt for the Maxwell architecture. A number of additional optimizations were made inside the chip to increase power efficiency.

The GeForce GTX 750 Ti

The GeForce GTX 750 Ti is designed for gamers who want to enjoy their games at 1080p with normal to high settings without breaking the bank. At the heart of the GeForce GTX 750 Ti lies our first-generation Maxwell GM107 GPU with 640 CUDA Cores. The memory subsystem of GeForce GTX 750 Ti consists of two 64-bit memory controllers (128-bit) with 1GB or 2GB of 5.4Gbps GDDR5 memory.

GeForce GTX 750 Ti also ships with GPU Boost 2.0 technology, ensuring that the graphics card is always running at the highest clocks possible for the very best gaming performance under varied operating conditions. With Boost 2.0, NVIDIA also guarantee a minimum level of performance no matter the workload or thermal/power conditions.
The base clock speed of the GeForce GTX 750 Ti is 1020MHz. The typical Boost Clock speed is 1085MHz. The Boost Clock speed is based on the average GeForce GTX 750 Ti card running a wide variety of games and applications. Note that the actual Boost clock will vary from game-to-game depending on actual system conditions.
