Ultra Street Fighter IV Preview

I was never the biggest Street Fighter fan whilst growing up due to the fact that the younger me just wanted to button bash my way through all fighting games. Only in the last 5 years I came across the latest successful series of Street Fighter 4 games, the ones with the 3D modelled fighters in a 2D fighting world, and have been hooked ever since. Ultra Street Fighter IV is the 4th updated game in the series despite Seth Killian saying that the previous was the last. But, I’m ecstatic they did go ahead with a new title as it’s the biggest update to date.

USFIV_006

What’s an Update?

For anyone that doesn’t know what a Street Fighter update is it’s literally what is says. The base game would be released, in this case 2009’s Street Fighter IV, and due to feedback from gamers and professional players Capcom would tweak and balance the fighters to become better/fair whilst throwing in some added features. Within an update characters would have various movements sped up or slowed down, made stronger or weaker and even be able to withstand more or less damage.

Over the past few years we’ve seen 2 updates, the first being Super Street Fighter that added 10 new characters, then Super Street Fighter Arcade Edition which brought 4 more characters, and now Ultra Street Fighter IV which adds 5 more characters. So what exactly makes this summers most anticipated beat up a must have?

New Characters

I got my hands on the latest new and exciting characters for this game and I must say they fit in absolutely snug amongst the already awesome roster. 3 of the 5 characters you might have already played or come across from 2012’s Street Fighter X Tekken game.

Poison_Action

First up: Poison, armed with a riding whip and biker hat, this woman had me keeping my guard up as she mixes up her delayed projectiles and swift moves perfectly.

Hugo_Action

Hugo, the big burley wrestler type can take quite the beating and dish out a lot of damage if used correctly.

Rolento_Action

Rolento, the final addition from the previous cross over game who slides and rolls around quite a bit, dressed in military uniform and armed with a staff and grenades. What more could you ask for?

Elena_Action

Elena is a female Capoeira fighter seen in previous Street Fighters with the unique ability to heal as her ultra move. Fighting only using her feet as Capoeira fighters do, Elena is the only additional character that offers a unique fighting style and is also very quick and accessible to learn.

Decapre_Action

Decapre is the final and most recently announced character that debuts in Ultra Street Fighter 4. She has a similar look to Cammy but has her own unique move set and is armed with a claw and some moves which resembles Cammy’s. With an unknown background other than being part of an army of clones I’m looking forward to seeing how she unfolds. Who isn’t excited to seeing how a brand new fighter does on their first outing?

Other Features

If you thought having now 44 playable characters in the roster was enough that’s just the tip of the iceberg of features. There’s an additional 6 stages to battle it out on for even more visual variety. Pitstop 109, Mad Gear Hideout, Cosmic Elevator, Blast Furnace, Half Pipe and Jurassic Era Research Facility make their way across from Street Fighter X Tekken which I enjoyed as they were dynamic in that game and some of the background animations have made it over too.

The online mode now features a team battle mode that features also the survival game type meaning after every match your remaining health bar stays the same. A true test of endurance and 3 verses 3 team play. You can now even train with your friends online to try out and practice new moves and combos rather than being restricted to default match ups. And if you’re just training by yourself you could have your match making done in the background so you can continuously keep honing your skills whilst you wait.

My Favourite Feature

There are a few other additional cool tricks you can now pull off within the matches. From delaying your standing up after being knocked down to throw off your opponent’s timing if they’re anticipating you getting back up, to the new Red Focus move which absorbs multiple attacks in exchange for some of your super bar. But my favourite feature is having the option to having both of your ultra moves. For anyone that doesn’t know, your ultra move is only powered up if you’re taking quite the beating, previously named the Revenge bar which makes sense. Now this ultra bar allows you to do 1 of 2 moves chosen by you whilst selecting your character and can’t be changed mid fight. With the addition of Ultra Combo Double you can now have the option to do either move at the cost of reduced damage to keep it fair. Now players like myself who use a character with an ultra offensive move and an ultra counter move can have game changing options right at our finger tips.

USFIV_005

Verdict

I happen to be that gamer that never buys additional costumes or colour packs for my characters as I’m completely happy to still have the same fun without, but secretly wish I did when I see others with them. What Ultra Street Fighter IV comes with is every DLC costume pack for all the characters and all the varieties of colours, which surprisingly got me more excited than I anticipated. I got to play as Cammy in a black cat suit and have Guile in an all white admiral’s coat. Considering the price of the packs previously this alone would make up the update’s asking price plus more, let alone getting more characters, stages and tweaks to the moves.

Whether you’re thinking of getting into Street Fighter for the first time, new to the Street Fighter IV series or a fan already my verdict is this game is what we’ve been waiting for and it doesn’t disappoint. If you buy the digital upgrade version in June or holding out for the disk version in August you will be getting your money’s worth. I eagerly await the launch and will pester Capcom to eventually bring Ultra Street Fighter IV to the Xbox One and PS4 where we can share our videos across the communities.

Final Thoughts

Turtle Beach worked directly with Respawn to create headset design with all the graphics, so if you are a huge Titanfall fan this is headset for you!

In order to get the headset to work on an Xbox One you need to perform an update to the controller with the adaptor attached. The adaptor has a sticker on it to remind you of this, also there is documentation in the package too – but don’t worry, as soon as your Xbox One detects the adaptor connected it tells you that you need to perform an update (assuming your Xbox One is up to date with the latest update) and you perform this by connecting the controller and adaptor to your Xbox One using the supplied cable. The whole thing takes about a minute and then you are good to go.

The headset will also work on an Xbox 360, mobile devices, PC’s and even PS4’s and PS3’s (although Turtle Beach don’t mention that on the box).

The headset is very solid and felt quite comfortable to wear for long periods of time (although to begin with they felt quite tight), and anyone who has seen how long I have spent playing Titanfall will see that is a long time! The ear cups are made from a breathable mesh so they don’t get all sweaty while you play, and the position of the cups can be altered very easily.

The sound quality is very good– you can hear every shot, and even the sickening sound of your neck being broken when someone sneaks up on you from behind. The is a bass boost option too, but that only works on the Xbox 360 and PC, not on the Xbox One.

The Titanfall Ear Force Atlas Official Gaming Headset is available now for £119.99.

A Look at the Comics Unmasked: Art and Anarchy in the UK exhibition at the British Library

Comics Unmasked: Art and Anarchy in the UK opened a few days ago, offering the first chance to see the British Library’s extensive comic book collection on display alongside original artwork and scripts loaned from such names asNeil Gaiman, Grant Morrison, Dave Gibbons, China Mieville and Mark Millar.

CDW at Comics Unmasked - 37

From the 1825 Glasgow Looking Glass, thought to be the first ever comic, to Judge Dredd’s helmet from the recent film adaptation of the 2000AD Judge Dredd series, the exhibition traces a long and tumultuous history of the British comic book.

Highlights of the exhibition also include an example of a medieval ‘comic’ from 1470, Apocalypse, a ventriloquist dummy of Ally Sloper, one of the earliest comic strip characters, 70’s underground comics tried at court for obscenity, such as Oz which is accompanied by a previously unheard recording of the Oz trial itself, as well as 21st century material, including original artwork and manuscripts of the likes of Kick-Ass, Sandman and Batman and Robin, and Keaton Henson’s 2012 doll’s house installation, Gloaming, adapted specially for the show.

CDW at Comics Unmasked - 16

Curated by comic creator John Harris Dunning and leading UK expert Paul Gravett, working with Adrian Edwards, the British Library’s Head of Printed Historical Sources, the exhibition displays over 200 exhibits and uses newly commissioned artwork by celebrated comic book artist Dave McKean, the show’s artistic director.

Here are some more highlights of the exhibition – I highly recommend going and seeing everything for yourself.

Dragon Age The Masked Empire is the new Dragon Age novel from Titan Books, and we have 3 copies of the book to give away.

Dragonmasked_1

Empress Celene of Orlais rose to the throne of the most powerful nation in Thedas through wisdom, wit, and ruthless manipulation. Now, the empire she has guided into an age of enlightenment is threatened from within by imminent war between the templars and the mages, even as rebellion stirs among the downtrodden elves To save Orlais, Celene must keep her hold on the throne by any means necessary.

Fighting with the legendary skill of the Orlesian Chevaliers , Grand Duke Gaspard has won countless battles for the empire and the empress But has he fought in vain? As the Circle fails and chaos looms, Gaspard begins to doubt that Celene’s diplomatic approach to the mage problem or the elven uprisings will keep the empire safe. Perhaps it is time for a new leader, one who lives by the tenets of the Chevalier’s Code, to make Orlais strong again.

Briala has been Celene’s handmaid since the two of them were children, subtly using her position to help improve the lives of elves across Orlais. She is Celene’s confidante, spymaster, and lover, but when politics force the empress to choose between the rights of Briala’s people and the Orlesian throne, Briala must in turn decide where her true loyalties lie.
Alliances are forged and promises broken as Celene and Gaspard battle for the throne of Orlais But in the end, the elves who hide in the forests or starve in the alienages may decide the fate of the masked empire.

Review: 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil

Another huge year for football, another year for EA to release its World Cup companion game. Will those who’ve bought FIFA 14, and will most likely buy FIFA 15, get anything out of this edition, or will three FIFA titles in 12 months be a little too much, even for the truly hardcore?

easports2014fifaworldcupbrazil_xbox360_ps3_brazil_vs_mexico_overthebackheader_wm

Whilst initial impressions scream of a re-skinned FIFA 14, mainly due to the still overly convoluted and online focused main menu being daubed in gaudy greens and yellows, it quickly becomes apparent that this is anything but. This is a game that has been specifically engineered and marketed, to appeal to fans of the World Cup, and to those who fancy reliving all the joys and despairs, long after the pubs are closed and the tears of the streets are dry.

In lieu of the countless leagues and teams that comprise a normal FIFA, over 200 national squads take their place. To account for this, certain modes have been altered slightly, along with adding a few new ones. You can still create a player and lead him, eventually, to captain status in your country of choice, yet it works a little differently from the previous titles. Instead of completing challenges and the like to improve stats, your progression will develop depending upon how ‘in form’ you are. Whilst this may sound like a logical solution, it can also frustrate if the AI lets you down and refuses to make any competent decisions, such as passing the ball.

Adding to the roster of available game modes is an interesting, scenario based mode called the Story of Qualifying ,which asks the ‘what if’ questions and tasks you with performing them. You’ll often be losing by a goal with around ten minutes on the clock to turn it around; usually starting with a set piece in your favour too. It can indeed be tense and fun to pull off the incredulous, and considering there are not only several difficulties and side objectives to go for, but that once the tournament actually starts, this mode will extend there too, stretching the possibilities and giving disparate fans something to do whilst Spain walks off with it.

In terms of gameplay, not too much has been altered from FIFA 14, crossing accuracy has been tweaked to help stem the flow of headed goals, yet pace is still too an important stat to focus on. Fortunately, the customisable slider bars make their return once more to help make the single player portion of the game seem a little more realistic, and is often worth making a few minor adjustments here and there. Corners have been spruced up a little too with the addition of being able to tell your teammates to crowd the keeper, make runs to the near/far post and others, making it a little easier to fulfil what you actually want to accomplish. The main downside to the gameplay is that, due to it not being on the PS4 and Xbox One, you’re missing out on the Ignite engine of FIFA 14; unfortunately, the difference is beyond noticeable.

easports2014fifaworldcupbrazil_xbox360_ps3_england_awaykit_walkout_wm

Midfield scrambles seem more infuriating this time around too, as when a teammate loses possession, and you’re playing as one of the lesser ranked nations, unimaginable irritation ensues. Teammates will stand idly by, watching as the ball rolls mere feet from them, whilst an opposition member will gladly race 15 yards to pounce upon a loose ball. Just because they might not be as technically gifted, doesn’t mean they’re incapable of sticking a foot out. It not only diminishes the experience, but often devolves into a farcical state of patiently waiting until the opposition regains possession whilst inanely mashing the pad.

Without FIFA’s flagship Ultimate Team mode, is there anything to keep you playing in the long term? Probably not is the short answer! Whilst there is an online league system where wins will propel you further through the ranks in an attempt to clutch online gold, I can’t see the mode being too overpopulated too long after the World Cup season has finished. Fortunately, due to the intended audience being of a more casual nature, there’s plenty of offline content to suit those rainy Sunday afternoons.

Along with a competent, if not entirely competitive, two button control scheme for those new to the genre, there is also a beginner difficulty setting, helping to ease the uninitiated into the flow of play. More options on the training field wouldn’t go amiss however; it would be nice if you could set up customisable individual scenarios, such as dribbling around actual players that would move to intercept you, instead of the intimidating stationary cones and sticks. Not only would this improve some player’s concepts of the more advanced controls, but also being able to upload them for others to compete with, could be worked in too.

fwc_xbox360_ps3_spain_awaykit_lineup_wm

There have been some nice added touches that can make a surprisingly impactful difference on the player’s experience. Little dashes of immersion such as the camera cutting to a local drinking establishment to witness the fans admiration/desolation when someone scores, despite the perhaps slightly blinkered view of a pub packed with English drinkers… The music, whilst certainly apt and justified, still could benefit from custom soundtracks and a playlist, yet it’s not all about the music though in FIFA World Cup. Radio podcasts have also been added during the World Cup modes, hosts Andy Goldstein and Ian Darke make excellent commentaries and genuinely interesting discussions; also available are ‘The Men in Blazers’ take on proceedings; whilst they can eventually repeat themselves, it’s a feature that I would love to see return or make an appearance in the next full title.

Due to being spoilt with last year’s excellent looking FIFA 14 on the PS4 and Xbox One, it’s inevitable that the graphics on this, the PS3 and Xbox 360 generation hardware, were going to take a hit. For the most part, it looks good, however, there are noticeable frame rate dips in seemingly random places, plus the jagged lines on the centre circle are a little disappointing, along with a general drop in definition across the board. One other minor annoyance, that wouldn’t normally come up if it were not for the short scenario matches, is the game only auto-saving once you reach the end of match screen, not slightly before, making you unable to move the cursor to the retry option for a seemingly interminable amount of time, especially noticeable after your fifth retry!

Whilst it may not be the update most were hoping for, and that it could well have been released as DLC instead, 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil is still a solid entry. Meant more as an accompaniment to the event for casual fans than a full blown release, I can’t help but feel it would have significantly ignited my interest more, had it been on what should be now called the current gen, the PS4 and Xbox One.
