V by Vodafone announces two new wearables and a smart home kit

0

Vodafone is expanding its V by Vodafone range with two new wearables and a smart home kit. All three products have been designed to make smart living a reality for the average family – with ease of use and value for money being top priorities.

Businesses will benefit too, with two ‘digital building’ solutions. Both utilise Vodafone’s expertise in connectivity and technology to help businesses ensure space, resources and costs are optimised.

Vodafone UK’s Neil Blagden, Chief Operating Officer (far left) and Kate Wright, Head of Consumer Services and Innovation, (far right) with the first Vodafone Gigafast Broadband family in Milton Keynes. Micaela and Chris (mother and father) are now receiving broadband speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps thanks to Vodafone with their two children Daisy and Harry, who are wearing Vodafone’s new V-Kids Watch with several safety features.

Nick Jeffery, Vodafone UK Chief Executive, said: “Our aim is to help families create a smart home simply and without too much expense. Many families would like a smart home but worry that it would be too complicated or expensive. It doesn’t have to be that way. Our V by Vodafone products are designed to plug in simply and work via one easy to use the app. Together with our new wearables, they will help busy families stay connected and give them peace of mind that their loved ones and home are safe.”

Around 14% of consumers in the UK own wearables, such as smartwatches, to track their health and fitness. By 2024, wearables are predicted to be the most widely used IoT application in the UK, with approximately 28 million connections.[i]

At the same time, demand for connected home technologies is growing. Currently, about a third of UK homes contain three or more connected devices, and that number is projected to reach an average of 8.7 connected devices by 2021. More and more families are turning to smart home systems, including motion sensors and security cameras, to protect their homes – ownership of such devices has doubled to 8% since 2016

V-Kids Watch is a smartwatch designed for younger children. It has several safety features, including a built-in SOS button to call for help if required. Parents can exchange voice recordings with their children and use geographic coordinates to set ‘Safe Zones’, places where their children will typically be spending their time, such as their home and school. Parents can also check on their children’s whereabouts with GPS tracking and receive updates if required. Built-in child-friendly games help to keep wearers entertained.

V-SOS Band is an easy to use smart bracelet designed for vulnerable family members or those who have mobility issues.

The band’s safety features include an SOS button that when pressed sends a notification to family members, along with a timestamp and geographic coordinates. A notification alert is also triggered if the wearer falls down, or if the remaining battery power falls below 15%. The band is waterproof and features a long life rechargeable battery.

V-Home hosts a range of smart home devices and services designed to help you keep your home safe and secure, even when you’re not there. V-Home includes a security camera, a multi-sensor, an indoor siren and the V-Home Hub, which connects all the devices through one easy to use the app.

Customers can also add devices such as water leak sensors and smoke sensors. As part of our V-Home service, customer care agents will contact you to ensure that you are aware of any missed alerts – all for much less per month than traditional monitoring services.

Review: Far Cry 5 DLC – Lost on Mars

The first DLC for Far Cry 5 was rather dark in tone and serious in the story it told. Now following on from Hours of Darkness comes the second piece of DLC and a very different tone indeed as the action moves to outer space and lands on Mars. Will say that is the DLC that grabbed my attention when I first saw the Season Pass graphic and especially after playing a certain side mission within the main campaign.

Just like Hours of Darkness, Lost on Mars puts the player in the role of one of the side characters in the main campaign, this time we get to play as Nick Rye who during the main story is a pilot who players helped with the birth of his first child. Returning home from a run to the store to grab some diapers, a mysterious ray of light stops his truck only to have the voice of Hurk explain to him that his help is needed and soon Nick is transported to Mars. Discovering that Hurk has been helping an AI construct, Nick is informed that an alien invasion is threatening Earth and that Hurk has brought him to Mars in order to help the AI prepare defences to stop that invasion.

All standard sci-fi story so far but it is very clear right from the off that by having Hurk as your ‘companion’ that this really is designed to be fun, which kicks off by discovering that Hurk is now…a floating head. That is right, somehow his body has been ripped apart by the DLC story’s main enemy but Hurk is kind of dealing with it rather well. All the jokes and humour really comes from Hurk and his take on everything that is happening as well as his own situation. The dialogue is often silly but that is why Hurk is such a fun character to have in the Far Cry series and having Hurk commentating on things during this DLC campaign certainly lightens the tone and gives it a very tongue in cheek sense of humour.

The main aim of the DLC is to help the AI called Anne by finding and rebooting on her terminals and facilities around the map which have all been infested with Martian Arachnids. The map this time feels much smaller than the one in Hours of Darkness but the campaign itself is far longer to complete with a few prerequisite side objectives that have to be completed before you can complete the story. By finding and rebooting all of Anne’s systems and facilities you begin to restore her power and robot forces needed to save the earth. Each terminal requires an energy core to be replaced and these have been taken by the various Arachnid Queens dotted around the map which will need to be hunted down and killed in order to retrieve them. Not only that but the critters have also taken the limbs of Hurk which will need to be retrieved so that Hurk can get his body back before returning to Earth.

Like the previous DLC, game mechanics from the main campaign are used slightly differently here. For example the shop is now a 3D printer which can be used to build new weapons and items to be equipped by Nick but instead of cash money players but instead gather the material Hemoleum, which can be looted from dead Arachnids and found in containers dotted around the map. The weapons have a fun sci-fi twist but start off with conventional pistol, assault rifle, shotgun and phaser pistol which through the campaign will get new blueprint designs unlocked unlocking different types of the standard weapons with some being stronger versions of the base type and a few really crazy ones thrown into the mix. Simply rebooting terminals and stations will make these designs available in the 3D Printer so a good tip is to save as much Hemoleum as you can for when they unlock as you will need the more deadly ones as the campaign goes on.

The action comes in the form of fighting the Arachnids which look pretty much like oversized space crabs and live under the sand of Mars and will be alerted to your presence when you walk on that sand. You will quickly be given a gravity belt which you can use to jet pack boost jumps to help reach higher levels or to avoid the sand which is very handy early on in the campaign until you can unlock and equip the more powerful weapons from the 3D printer. The Arachnids come in different types from your standard soldier time to the more armoured variety as well as flying space bats. The main challenge are the Queens as they are bigger, stronger and have the ability to shoot poison which will nullify the gravity belt and acid which can depower your equipped weapon.

The main issue with the combat is that it very quickly becomes repetitive and once you have strong enough weapons you will be able to pretty much just cheese your way through any Queen encounters and deal with swarms of Arachnids fairly easily as long as you have enough items on you such as grenades and space bandages to heal. The only troubling element is when they swarm all around you but its pretty simple to just jet pack your butt out of there to a higher location to deal with it. You simply go from facility to facility to clear out the Arachnids, reboot the terminal and restore power with an energy core. There are a few distractions in there such as the hunt to find Hurk’s body parts and for some reason Clutch Nixon found his way to Mars putting some of his stunt challenges on there to complete but overall, find terminals, reboot them and move on to the next one until you have finished them all and after a couple of hours not even the comedy aspect can prevent it from becoming a real chore.

But this is a fun bit of DLC and it is supposed to be fun and whilst the action can get very repetitive it does have some fun weapons to use and the story itself holds up rather nicely. Visually the map looks great and the new sound effects for the weapons make it stand apart from the main campaign enough. I did like how Larry the scientist from the main campaign who you help complete his teleporter is linked into the DLC by way of the notes he has left around the map as he became Anne’s first human helped but fell to the Arachnids. It certainly does enough as DLC to set itself apart from the usual Far Cry 5 gameplay which stops it from being more of the same but I do feel it just could have done with more side missions along the way to break up the gameplay a little more.

Lost on Mars is fun, not very long but not too short with enough comedy from Nick and Hurk to keep it very light. Gameplay can become a chore nearer the end but it is certainly worth playing. Unlike Hours of Darkness however, completing this does not unlock new game modes for it, it is simply a play and complete mini campaign and I managed to complete all the objectives and side stuff in my first playthrough to make replaying it pointless but Im sure I will revisit it at some point. Two DLCs down and the third and final one which will feature the Far Cry 5 take on Zombies and so far I have been impressed with the extra Season Pass content for the game.

Spending time in space with Hurk was not something I expected to do with Far Cry 5 but it was certainly worth the effort and certainly offers a fun new story for fans of the main game to enjoy and get some smiles and laughs from for a few hours.

Vodafone begins offering home broadband speeds of 1 gigabit per second

0

Vodafone has begun Vodafone begins offering home broadband speeds of 1 gigabit per second (1,000Mbps), about 20 times the current UK average, to families in Milton Keynes, yesterday I was lucky to be invited by Vodafone to the house of Micaela and Chris (Mother and Father) and the children Daisy and Harry.

50 customer homes in Milton Keynes will be the first to test Vodafone Gigafast Broadband, our new full fibre home broadband service before it is made widely available across the city.

Vodafone UK’s Neil Blagden, Chief Operating Officer (far left) and Kate Wright, Head of Consumer and Innovation, (far right) with the first Vodafone Gigafast Broadband family in Milton Keynes. Micaela and Chris (mother and father) are now receiving broadband speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps thanks to Vodafone with their two children Daisy and Harry, who are wearing Vodafone’s new V-Kids Watch with several safety features.

Vodafone Gigafast Broadband runs over fibre optic cables at every stage of the connection to the Internet, instead of using old copper-based wires.

Workmen installing the Vodafone Gigafast Broadband under the footpath

This means customers will enjoy a faster and more reliable broadband service.

Vodafone Gigafast Broadband will enable family members in a busy household to go online at the same time, using multiple devices. For example, in a family of four with Vodafone Gigafast Broadband, these activities can be carried out simultaneously:

• One family member can stream a live event on television in Ultra High Definition (Ultra HD) • In a different room, another family member can stream a favourite movie or TV series in Ultra HD on a separate device • The rest of the family can play an online virtual reality game • A host of connected devices in the background keeps the home safe and secure.

With Vodafone Gigafast Broadband, everyday tasks that rely on transferring data can be completed faster than ever before. Uploading a memory card containing 16GB of holiday snaps and videos to the Cloud takes just two minutes, versus the current UK average of five hours and 44 minutes. And backing up a 200GB hard drive to the Cloud takes less than half an hour, instead of nearly three days.

Micaela Perez Amaro, a dance instructor, mother of two and the first Vodafone Gigafast customer, said: “Before we started using Vodafone Gigafast Broadband, I couldn’t work from home. There’s no reliable broadband where I live in Milton Keynes, so every time I wanted to send a video to a student, I had to drive to a relative’s house in London to use their broadband.”

“Now I can get work done at home if I need to, and everyone in the family can get online at the same time without a problem. I feel like we’ve gone from the Flintstones to the Jetsons. It’s made such a difference.”

Nick Jeffery, Vodafone UK Chief Executive, said: “Full fibre is vital to our digital economy and to the UK’s future as a digital leader, yet just 3% of UK premises currently have access to it. That’s why we are offering Vodafone Gigafast Broadband and making it available on a mass scale, reaching a million UK homes by 2021.”

Two Minute Spoiler Free Review : Tomb Raider

Here is our two minute spoiler free review of Tomb Raider – the film, not the game!

There have been many Tomb Raider games over the years, and with the recent reboot and the forthcoming release Shadow of the Tomb Raider, there is a lot of interest in Lara Croft.

The new movie, entitled Tomb Raider, stars Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft. Unlike the previous Tomb Raider movies staring Angelina Jolie, this Lara isn’t yet a Tomb Raider. Struggling on her own, still not over the death of her father, the movie starts with Lara as a bike messenger in London trying to earn some extra money to pay her own way. Yes she has this huge fortune but she doesn’t want anything to do it.

Following a discovery about her father and his last adventure, Lara sets off to find out what happened to him, and on the way discovers a lot about herself.

The film is very loosely based on the recent Tomb Raider game – a ship, an island, a group on the island, tombs and so on (I don’t want to ruin the film, or the game for you). Needless to say the rest of the movie is a fairly non-stop action movie, which is exactly what you would expect from a Tomb Raider movie.

It’s clearly set up to be the first of a new franchise, and I hope there will be others.

If you are a fan of the Tomb Raider games, or you just want to watch a fun and entertaining movie, then you should check out Tomb Raider.

Available now on Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray, DVD and 4K UHD.

Huawei Upgrades Devices’ Gaming Performance with GPU Turbo Update

Huawei Consumer Business Group revealed the release schedule for GPU Turbo, a graphics processing technology built from the ground up, that will revamp the ability of smartphones to process graphics-intensive applications like games. Arriving as part of an EMUI update to a range of Huawei devices, GPU Turbo will allow users to enjoy much-improved gaming performances without having to upgrade their devices.

The industry is faced with a challenge whereby GPUs are unable to keep up with the demand of more graphically-intensive applications, such as gaming and VR. Huawei’s approach to re-architect how graphics are processed at the system level is a novel method, representing the company’s commitment to innovation and supporting its devices for an extended period of time post-launch. Huawei engineers took design cues from a car’s turbocharger, which uses a cylinder to feed extra air into the combustion engine to give a vehicle an extra boost of power at no additional fuel cost. The same concept was applied to GPU Turbo, which takes its namesake from the turbochargers of automobiles.

GPU Turbo is able to accelerate performance by optimizing system utilization of software and hardware resources. GPU Turbo will raise the bar for GPU performance across Huawei smartphones, beginning with the HUAWEI Mate 10 and P20 Series in August. With GPU Turbo installed, graphics processing efficiency is improved by up to 60 percent while overall SoC power consumption is saved by 30 percent. This is beneficial since graphically demanding operations typically consume battery quickly.

This update exemplifies how Huawei addresses customer pain points through innovation. The improvement will be felt widely when playing graphically intense games. GPU Turbo will initially support PUBG MOBILE and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, two leading MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) titles, each with millions of active users. Support for additional games will be announced at a later date.

”Graphics performance is becoming a keystone of mobile devices, powering a wide array of applications, in particular gaming,” said Ryan Lui, AVP, Software Marketing, Huawei Consumer Business Group. “Gaming on mobile devices is the platform seeing the most innovation, with users enjoying more sophisticated, beautiful and graphically-demanding games. GPU Turbo makes high-end gaming experiences possible while also unlocking the potential for other demanding applications possible such as energy efficient AR/VR for shopping, learning and fun.”

The unveiling of GPU Turbo comes at a critical juncture, especially as mobile gaming is on a sharp rise globally. In 2017, gaming spend on mobile devices was more than two times greater than on PCs and almost four times more than traditional game consoles, according to IDC. The mobile gaming segment represents US$46.1 billion worldwide, encompassing 42 percent of the total US$108.9 billion market for gaming revenues in 2017, reported Newzoo, a market intelligence organization for the gaming, mobile and eSports industries. The figure for mobile shows a 19 percent gain compared to the prior year.

Aside from mobile gaming, GPU Turbo will deliver an optimized EMUI experience for Huawei devices. The performance boost will also benefit nascent technologies such as AR and VR, opening up boundless opportunities including for virtual classroom, online shopping, telemedicine and more. For instance, through AR and VR, users can take a tour of a location through their smartphones, as though they were actually there in-person. The GPU Turbo gives the hardware a helping hand to ensure these graphically taxing applications run as smoothly as possible.

Huawei will be pushing out updates on a rolling basis, first launching in August with the HUAWEI Mate 10, HUAWEI Mate 10 Pro, PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate 10, HUAWEI P20 Pro and HUAWEI P20 and PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate RS.

Fitness Fanatics… Epic transformations in film that will leave you wishing you trained a bit harder

From hours in the gym to look perfect for the part, to specific training to make sure the role looks realistic, actors often put their bodies to the test as they get into character. Some of the best physical transformations come as a result of hard work and training, rather than just make-up and special effects, as these amazing makeovers prove.

To celebrate the release of Tomb Raider on DVD, Blu-ray, 3D and 4K on July 16, we’re taking a look at some of Hollywood’s most epic actor transformations on the big screen which includes Alicia Vikander’s incredible bulk up to become the iconic Lara Croft.

Chris Pratt – Guardians of the Galaxy

Reduced carbs and a diet that was mostly paleo contributed to Chris Pratt’s 60 lb weight loss in preparation for filming Guardians of the Galaxy. Chris Pratt stars as one of the titular Guardians forced to work together to stop a fanatical warrior from taking control of the universe. For the role, he had to put the work in to build muscle whilst also becoming leaner and fitter, which required incredible discipline. Concentrating on both bodybuilding and conditioning left him toned and ready to play Peter Quill.

Jake Gylenhall – Southpaw

In Southpaw, Jake Gylenhall takes on the role of famed boxer, Billy Hope, who finds himself on a rampant path of destruction following the passing of his wife in an accident. Heartbroken, he fights to get his sports career back on track and get his daughter back from protective services. Beefing up to portray a world-champion boxer required Jake Gylenhall to train on another level and the results were outstanding. Intense training in the same way as a boxer is how he built his new physique, but the progress was also down to a new and guided mind set to get the results.

Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman – Black Swan

Perfecting pirouettes and pointy toes wasn’t all Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman had to do in preparation for their roles as skilled ballerinas in Black Swan… They also had to lose weight to look the part. They faced a gruelling schedule, dancing eight hours a day  and their extreme transformations meant that while they became talented ballerinas, their weight also dropped to as low as 95 lbs. Sometimes the lengths an actor goes to for a role can be unhealthy but it’s not long before they’re back to their old selves not long after the film wraps.

Tom Hardy – Bronson

In the crime drama, Bronson, our fave gritty Brit Tom Hardy plays the notorious prisoner and bare-knuckle boxer, who starts his story as Michael Peterson before merging into his alter-ego, Charles Bronson. Tom Hardy’s fitness journey to become the infamous convict began with a race against the clock. He put on 7lbs a week and a total of 2 and a half stone by upping his calorie intake. His work-out wasn’t as strict as some other strict regimes due to his need to bulk up to get the big, brawler look, rather than a leaner look. Training included push-ups, ab-workouts and random resistance exercises to build muscle and become Bronson.

Alicia Vikander – Tomb Raider

Becoming the iconic Lara Croft was no easy challenge but Alicia Vikander made it look like a breeze with the help of superstar trainer, Magnus Lygdback. She went from petite former ballerina to ripped adventurer ready to take on the tomb and discover the truth. To become the legendary Lara Croft took dedication and she undertook a wide range of exercises to build full body strength and lean muscles, from classic weight lifting to strength training. Alicia trained five to seven days a week for nearly seven months to create her stellar figure and become the ultimate Tomb Raider.

Tomb Raider is on DVD, Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD on July 16.
