The Nest Cam IQ is a great little camera that does everything you want. It has a wide angled lens, night vision, is small, and is connected via Wi-Fi, and everything you need to get going, including wall mounting kit is included in the box.
The first thing you need to do is set up the camera and connect it to your home Wi-Fi network. Nest recommend you try the camera outside where you want to be installed before you drill through your walls just to make sure you can pick up your Wi-Fi signal, and this is a good idea.
Setting up the camera is very simple and takes very little time at all using the Nest app on your smartphone. And if you already have another Nest device installed it can connect to that and use it to speed up the install.
Once the camera is configured the next job is to fit it on the wall which is likely to need you to drill some holes in the wall. If you are confident in doing this then go for it, otherwise you can get a Nest professional to come and install it for you for a charge. In the case of this review we had a professional do it for us – he drilled the holes in the wall, ran the cable through, mounted the camera and positioned it all – all in less than an hour – a lot less!
The quality of the camera is brilliant – you can adjust it if you wish depending on how much bandwidth you want to use, but if you can, set it on maximum and you can even see leaves blowing in the wind! You can also have it record audio if you wish as well as pictures.
The camera also works at night and in low light and the picture quality in those situations is also excellent.
Everything you want to do is controlled and configured via the app, including setting up activity zones if you are only interesting in a certain part of what the camera is capturing. You can also configure schedules, set notifications, enable close-up tracking and more. You can also turn off, or on, the light ring around the camera. You might want to leave it on so that any potential thief would see it and move along.
In order to get the most from your Cam IQ you really need to get a Nest Aware subsciption. A Nest Aware subscription comes with 24/7 continuous recording for up to 30 days and costs around £4 per month per camera. Some of the features of the Cam IQ can only be used with the subscription, but to be honest if you are going to pay £329 for the camera then an extra £4 per month to get the full bells and whistles and 30 days of recordings is a no brainer.

Vodafone extends cost free to extra 29 additional destinations
Today Vodafone customers signing up to Vodafone Pay monthly Red Entertainment plans can now roam with no extra charges in 29 additional destinations. This means new and upgrading customers can enjoy their home plan abroad with no additional charges in 77 countries worldwide, more destinations than any other UK network
New and upgrading Red Entertainment customers will enjoy hassle-free roaming in 29 of our most popular Roam-further destinations, as well as Vodafone’s 48 Roam-free destinations as part of our new Global Roaming Plus package.
The 29 destinations include long-haul locations such as USA, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. As well as these 77 destinations where no additional charges will apply, customers can also use their home plan in 75 Roam-further destinations from £6 a day.
In addition, Vodafone is now including 500 international minutes to EU destinations in its Red Entertainment plans – the only network to do so as part of a Pay monthly price plan. This allows customers to call both landlines and mobiles abroad at no extra cost.
In addition to Global Roaming Plus and international minutes, the Red Entertainment plans offer 4G roaming in 137 destinations – more than any other major UK network. Vodafone also offers full speed roaming on 4G where available on all plans with no data throttling.
And on top of that, Red Entertainment plan customers also have the choice of Amazon Prime Video, Spotify Premium, Sky Sports Mobile TV or a NOW TV Entertainment Pass for the duration of their contract.
Global Roaming Plus and inclusive international minutes to EU countries will be available for new and upgrading Red Entertainment SIM-only customers from 4th September.
