It’ll feel like you’re actually sitting in the theatre. No matter where you are in the room you’ll hear the action all around you with virtual surround sound from the CT60. For a more immersive experience try the CT260, it uses S-Force PRO Front Surround technology developed by Sony to create a 3D audio effect with just two front speakers in a single bar. It delivers sound that bends around the room and straight to your ears.

Sound that packs a punch
Turn it up, feel the bass. With a powerful sub-woofer, the CT60 and CT260 deliver deep notes that add more drama to movies – you’ll be jumping out of your chair. The CT60 has two front speakers that deliver 60W of clear, detailed audio. You get a bigger impact with the CT260, it has 300W of total speaker power. The CT260 has a wireless sub-woofer that delivers dynamic base from the tightest spaces. Pick it up, place it anywhere, it’s light and compact and free from the clutter of cables.

Cool, minimalist look
Enhance your living room décor, without overpowering the rest of the interior. The CT60 has a compact hexagon design which is a chic addition to any home. It’s stylish and practical – a sound bar not only fits in front of your TV but also on the wall, or on a shelf. It’s flexible set-up, it complements your style wherever you put it.

Easy access to your favourite music
Forget tangled wires and awkward USB ports. Get quick and easy cable-free access to your favourite tracks thanks to built-in Bluetooth®. The CT260 allows you to stream music from your PC, tablet or smartphone straight to the crisp, powerful sound of a 2.1ch system. It’s the missing link in your home entertainment system.

Both look really interesting – more news when we get it.

ICY DOCK Announces New Innovative External Drive Enclosure

ICY DOCK announced a new external hard drive enclosure with an innovative design and improved cooling solution.  Read on for details.

mb080_1280x853_1

ICY DOCK recently announced a new external hard drive enclosure with a unique cooling design.  It integrates an 80mm cooling fan on the front, and also uses screwless hard drive mounting features to make it easy to swap hard drives in and out.  The fan, mated to an automated temperature control mode, ensures that your hard drive stays nice and cool.  Here is a bit of the product announcement:

External enclosures are a great way to have high capacity data storage on the go. Data can also be a critical factor for media, backup, or music professionals. Some of the top tier hard drive companies have made their own all in one enclosure with hard drive included. However, one of the known major causes of hard drive failure is due to excessive heat buildup caused by a lack of a proper cooling system. Also, a majority of hard drive manufactures only allow a 1 year warranty on their all in one external hard drives. This can be fatal for someone who has just lost their data and has to spend a significant amount of money in order to recover their data. There are other external enclosures in the market that provide a cooling system to help prevent this, but the physical placement of the cooling system does not always allow for the optimal airflow to cool the hard drive. Going above and beyond, the MB080USEB-1SB Blizzard is the next generation of external enclosures dedicated for maximum performance in cooling.

Elegantly Designed Hardware
The Blizzard has a uniquely designed front panel integrated with a massive 80mm fan for an elegant and nonintrusive design for the best ventilation, all in a single 3.5″ hard drive that is installed into the front of the enclosure. There are two important reasons for the particular fan placement and design. First, the MB080USEB-1SB will be able to cool all sides of the hard drive and create only one direction of airflow from the front to the back, where the air then exits. This extends the life of the cooling fan as it only intakes cool cold air and increases the overall cooling efficiency of the hard drive, in comparison to other enclosure cooling designs. Second, the 80mm fan is integrated into the detachable front panel which allows to easily swap your hard drive without any screws or tools to worry about. On the sides includes two slightly concealed button ejectors that when pressed, will eject the front panel enabling the user to swap the hard drive as needed. Alongside our tool-less drive installation system, media producers can easily remove their hard drive from the Blizzard and directly transport their data to another location, ultimately removing the setup process of the enclosure.

Smarter Cooling Functionality
The rear panel comprises of a multitude of defining features coming all together from only the best ideas of our previous external enclosure models. The enclosure has a LED brightness dial to adjust the cool blue ambient LED brightness to your preferred liking. . To add more functionality, the Blizzard’s LED color will turn red when the hard drive temperature is over 50°C. The built in fan controller allows you to select low, high, and auto to properly cool the hard drive to help if such a case appears. The auto mode properly adjusts accordingly to your hard drive’s requirements by increasing or decreasing the fan speed as needed.

Everything but the Kitchen Sink
One of the most interesting features of the MB080USEB-1SB Blizzard is the Triple-Interface design. First off, the eSATA interface introduces increased performance which enables the user to transfer and get the job done much quicker with your laptops or PC system. Meanwhile, the USB 2.0 interface provides maximum compatibility while on your legacy PC or Mac to make sharing as easy as possible. Lastly, the Firewire 800 interface is perfect choice for any Mac system. With the MB080USEB-1SB supplying a variety of interfaces makes it the first and foremost choice for media professionals who are using different computer systems.Key Features:

  • Unique & Elegant design.
  • Massive 80mm fan for optimal cooling.
  • Direct airflow design to completely cool all sides of the hard drive.
  • Completely screw-less / tool-less design for any 3.5″ SATA I/II/III HDD.
  • FireWire 800, eSATA & USB 2.0 interface for maximum versatility.
  • Backward compatible with USB 2.0 for wide-ranging use.
  • 3 Speed Adjustable Cooling Fan, including auto setting featuring Smart Cooling technology.  Smart Cooling Technology is active in auto mode and accurately adjusts the fan speed according to your hard drive’s needs.
  • Cool blue ambient LED with adjustable brightness control.
  • Smart-Temp functionality – Front LED changes from blue to red when over 50° C.
  • Supports SATA 6Gbit hard drive up to 3TB capacity.
  • Great for Media and IT Professionals.
  • Designed for PC & Mac systems.

Download Issue 4 of The MagPi Digital Magazine for lovers of the Raspberry Pi

If you have, or are interested in the Raspberry Pi, then you might want to download the new issue of The MagPi digital magazine.

MagPi4

This is how the Raspberry Pi guys describe the magazine:

The MagPi, a free online magazine dedicated to the Raspberry Pi, whose first issue was released a few days ago, is a perfect example of that. It’s been put together entirely by volunteers, guided by Ash Stone, Jason “Jaseman” Davies, Meltwater and other names you may recognise from the forums and comments on this site. I was broadly aware they were up to something, but I was amazed at the scope of what they sent me to look at earlier in the week, and I’ve been really, really impressed by the first issue. There are Debian and Puppy guides, articles on computing history, ideas for robotics projects, tutorials in Scratch and Python (with code you can type in yourself, just like in the good old days), features about the Raspberry Pi itself, and other goodies to dig into. I really can’t recommend it enough, and if you haven’t been lucky enough to get to the head of the queue, you don’t need a Raspberry Pi to find it useful (you might actually find the magazine good preparation before yours arrives).

It is a really interesting read – so go download it today, and let us know what you think!

Oh, and I am very happy to see that one of my pictures I took at the Cambridge Raspberry Jam was used on the cover!

Spectrum 30 event coming this September to celebrate the ZX Spectrum

The Spectrum gave us 30 great years and now it’s time to celebrate its birthday with the biggest Spectrum party of this century.

Spectrum30title

This year we saw the Beeb @ 30 event, and now it’s time for the Spectrum’s 30th Anniversary event.

I had a ZX Spectrum when I was a kid, I started off with a 16K one, then got the 48K ram pack and moved on from there. If it wasn’t for the BBC Micro and the Spectrum I don’t think I would be doing what I do today!

One of really cool things for the event is the return of the ZX Microfair. I remember going to many of these and I can’t wait to see what is on offer there.

Visitors can attend on the Saturday, the Sunday or both. A single day ticket is £18 and the weekend ticket is £23.

Microsoft Introduces Outlook.Com Email Service

Microsoft announced today a new email service called Outlook.com, adding Skype integration, limiting ads and providing a new look and feel.  Read on for details!

OfficelogoOrange_Web

Microsoft announced Outlook.Com, their new take on email services.  The formatting looks just like Office 2013 (no surprise there) and Skype is now integrated.  Here are some highlights from the blog post:

Introducing Outlook.com – Modern Email for the Next Billion Mailboxes

Recently, we talked about how we’ve reimagined cloud services for Windows 8 and Windows Phone. And we described new apps for Windows 8, updates to SkyDrive, and how cloud services power the new Office Preview, We’ve also been hard at work on a mission to reimagine personal email – from the datacenter all the way to the user experience. Today, we’re starting to deliver on that goal with a preview of the new Outlook.com – modern email designed for the next billion mailboxes.

Webmail was first introduced with HoTMaiL in 1996. Back then, it was novel to have a personal email address you could keep for life – one that was totally independent from your business or internet service provider. Eight years later, Google introduced Gmail, which included 1 GB of storage and inbox search. And while Gmail and other webmail services like Hotmail have added some features since then, not much has fundamentally changed in webmail over the last 8 years – though yesterday’s frustrations about the small size of inboxes are now things of the past. At the same time, email is becoming less and less useful as inboxes become cluttered with newsletters and social updates, and people increasingly keep up their personal connections in social networks instead of their email address books. All of this has led many to hope for a better solution so you don’t have to settle for today’s webmail.

It’s Time for a Change

We think the time is right to reimagine email. So today, we’re introducing a preview of Outlook.com. We realized that we needed to take a bold step, break from the past and build you a brand new service from the ground up. You already know Outlook via the Outlook desktop application-for PCs and Macs-as the world’s most popular application for reading email, managing a calendar, and connecting to people. And you may have used the Outlook Web App connected to Exchange Server in your organization. Now, in addition to a desktop application and a service for businesses, we’re offering Outlook as a personal email service – Outlook.com.

Modern experience for modern browsers and devices. Email isn’t just about the browser anymore. In fact, email represents 20% of the time we spend on smartphones, and is used extensively on tablets as well as PCs. Outlook is designed cloud first, so all of your mail is always available wherever you are. Its fresh, clean user interface gets the clutter out of your way-the header has 60% fewer pixels and there are 30% more messages visible in your inbox that the webmail most people are used to. And there are no display ads or large search boxes that take up extra space. Outlook.com also uses Exchange ActiveSync, so it powers your mail, calendar and people experience on your smartphone, tablet, and the new Outlook 2013 Preview.

Get Started Today at Outlook.com

While today’s preview is just the start, Outlook.com is ready now to become your primary email service. We’re expecting millions of people to try it out. Starting today, you can get an @Outlook.com email address, and we’ve also made it easy to get started with your current email address if you want to.

  • If you’re a Hotmail customer and want to upgrade to the Outlook.com preview, just click “Upgrade” in the options menu of Hotmail. Your email address, password, contacts, old email, and rules will remain unchanged, and you can send/receive email from your @hotmail.com or @msn.com or @live.com address. You’ll experience it all in the new Outlook.com preview user interface. You can also add an @Outlook.com email address to your account if you want.
  • Using Gmail, Yahoo, or another email service? No problem – it’s easy to try the preview by going to http://www.outlook.com/. If you have a Microsoft account, just log in and get started. If you don’t, it’s easy to create a new account with an @Outlook.com email address. Then you can set up Gmail or your other email service to forward your mail to Outlook.com and import your contacts and messages by following these instructions . This will let you use both services for now, but we think that over time, most people will prefer Outlook.com.
  • Don’t have an email address? Go to Outlook.com and create a new one and you’ll be up and running.

Once you’re using Outlook.com, you can also set it up on your phone (Windows Phone, iPhone, Android, Blackberry, or other phone), tablet (Windows 8, iPad, and Android), in the new Outlook 2013 Preview, or in other mail apps you might use. And because Outlook.com supports Exchange ActiveSync, you can set it up just like you would your Exchange or Hotmail account. Have more questions? See our step-by- step guide to setting up Outlook.com on your phone.
