A preview of Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 and an interview with Michael Sroczynski from City Interactive

We recently had a preview of City Interactives forthcoming game Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2. We also got to sit down with Michael Sroczynski to talk about it.

_namcobandai_Box_Bits_2707Sniper GW2_ X360_2D

The first Sniper: Ghost Warrior game was a hit with game players, but wasn’t a hit with reviewers. In fact a lot of reviewers seemed to hate it, but at the same time it still sold well and a lot of people played it.

Back at E3 in June we had a demo of Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 and back then it was planned to be released around October or November of this year – then suddenly it was pushed back and at that time there was no real word given as to why that was.

Jump forward a few months and we were invited to play two levels and so we went along to see how the game had developed.

_namcobandai_Screenshots_40227S01_nologo _namcobandai_Screenshots_40228S02_nologo

The story takes places between 1993 and 1999 and starts in Bosnia, moving onto the Philippines and Tibet (but more on that in the interview below).

_namcobandai_Screenshots_40229S03_nologo _namcobandai_Screenshots_40230S04_nologo

There is a lot of humour in the game, but not over the top humour like in other games.

There is a lot of stealth required in this game – but unlike other stealth games if you are seen it’s not game over. Frankly if you are seen its probably likely you will die, but at least you have a chance.

_namcobandai_Screenshots_40231S05_nologo _namcobandai_Screenshots_40232S06_nologo

Your spotter is very important in the game – he gives you advice and guidance and just like a real sniper you must put your life in his hands.

_namcobandai_Screenshots_40233S07_nologo _namcobandai_Screenshots_40234S08_nologo

There are bullet cams in the game – these are rewards for good or difficult shots and it can be rather rewarding to see it in slow motion when you have spent a lot of time preparing for the shot.

The demo we played utilised DirectX 9, but we were informed that when the game is released early next year it will incorporate DirectX 11.

_namcobandai_Screenshots_40235S09_nologo

For the demo we got to play two levels. The first level didn’t actually involve a sniper rifle at all – in fact, at the start of the level your character actually drops his rifle and the level is all about stealth with only a knife and a silenced pistol to help you. You have to make your way through a camp, avoiding enemies and eventually plant some explosives.

The second level actually did involve your sniper rifle and there were lots of stealth and then taking out the enemy in different positions, and it certainly felt a lot more intense that the first level.

To be honest it was hard to tell from those two levels how the game will turn out. The first level we played was a little boring – personally for a game where you are a sniper, I want to be a sniper and not someone who is crouching and crawling around slowly trying not to be seen without ever even having your sniper rifle with you.

The second level was more interesting, however there were a lot of enemies who seemed to either sense where you were and all start shooting at you, or wouldn’t notice that their fellow bad guy had just been dispatched.

This was a preview, so to be fair a lot can change between then and the final release and I am interested to see how the game develops.

After the two levels we got to sit down with Michael Sroczynski who is a producer working on the game. We talked about the game, the weapons and various other things.

And here is the interview with Michael:

NVIDIA Release GeForce 310.70 WHQL Drivers

NVIDIA have released a GeForce 310.70 WHQL driver for it’s graphics cards.

GeForce-Logo_thumb_thumb_thumb

This is what NVIDIA have posted on their blog:

The new GeForce 310.70 drivers are now available to download. The culmination of our recent beta releases, these WHQL-candidate drivers improve performance by up to 37% in the year’s most popular games, add TXAA support to Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Assassin’s Creed III, make Sparse Grid Supersampling easier to use, get your system ready for the latest releases, including Far Cry 3, Hitman: Absolution and Planetside 2, and resolve key issues, like shadow flickering in Assassin’s Creed III.

If you have any feedback about today’s driver please leave a comment at the bottom of the article, and if you have a technical issue please report the problem via the NVIDIA Display Driver Feedback Form.

Performance Improvements

In October’s GeForce 310.33 beta driver we improved performance by up to 15% in nine games, and this time we’re improving performance by up to 37% in twenty-one games. Leading the charge in 310.70 is a 37% boost for Far Cry 3, followed by a 26% boost for Call of Duty: Black Ops II, an 18% boost for The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, a 17% boost for Assassin’s Creed III, and a 12% boost for Battlefield 3.

Please note that performance improvements benefit all GeForce GTX graphics cards, though obviously to varying degrees. We would of course love to show how our optimizations benefit the entire range of GeForce GTX GPUs, but sadly this is unfeasible given the number of benchmarks required. For example, for each GPU and game you test include a before and after benchmark to show the level of improvement, then multiply the number of tests by the number of resolutions, three, and then again by the number of different detail levels and anti-aliasing modes tested. Then, finally, to verify the results, run everything again to ensure there were no anomalies. With so many GPUs in our lineup, even focusing exclusively on the most popular models would prove impossible in the time between a driver being finalized, and released.

Performance Improvement Benchmarks

In Far Cry 3, we maxed out the game’s many graphics options, selected SSAO Ambient Occlusion (an excellent balance between performance and fidelity), set the game’s version of Transparency Supersampling to “Standard”, and enabled 8xMSAA to eliminate aliased edges.

With 310.70 installed, performance improved by up to 37.8%, helping the GTX 670 and GTX 680 achieve playable frame rates at this highly demanding detail level.

Below, we detail the two-dozen other optimizations packed into the 310.70 drivers, using the GeForce GTX 680 and GeForce GTX 660.

Results & Benchmark Settings:

  • Aliens vs. Predator: Performance increased by 3.4% at 1920×1080 when using max settings, tessellation, and Advanced Shadows.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II & Assassin’s Creed III TXAA Anti-Aliasing

At the launch of the GeForce GTX 680 last March we announced a new form of advanced anti-aliasing called TXAA, exclusive to Kepler-based GTX 600 series video cards. Utilizing a custom anti-aliasing resolve, a temporal filter, and Multisample hardware anti-aliasing, TXAA is designed to remove almost all aliasing from a scene, and eliminate temporal aliasing, the distracting movement of aliased lines when the player’s viewpoint is in motion in-game.

In July we released the TXAA-enabled GeForce 304.79 beta drivers, and in August The Secret World, Funcom’s technologically-advanced MMO, became the first game to support the new anti-aliasing technique. Gamers and the independent press agreed that the result was super smooth, free of troublesome aliasing, but some felt the new TXAA-enhanced image was too soft. To that end, Timothy Lottes, NVIDIA’s FXAA and TXAA mastermind, has improved the technique, making it sharper and more defined. And so, with the 310.70 drivers installed, you can now enjoy Tim’s new and improved TXAA anti-aliasing in Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Assassin’s Creed III, two of the year’s most popular games.

To demonstrate the capabilities of this new TXAA implementation, we’ve cooked up a side-by-side Assassin’s Creed III comparison video, which gives those of you without a Kepler GPU a great idea of how TXAA can drastically enhance games.

NVIDIA Fullscene Sparse Grid Supersampling Anti-Aliasing Enhancement

Several years ago Fullscene Sparse Grid Supersampling Anti-Aliasing was added to the GeForce drivers as an advanced anti-aliasing option for those with high-end systems. When enabled and correctly configured, SGSSAA significantly increases the quality of Multisample Anti-Aliasing, helping remove aliasing that even 8xMSAA struggles with.

In this interactive example from Mass Effect 3 the benefits of SGSSAA are immediately obvious.

Configuring SGSSAA to reach this level of detail can at times be tricky due to the need to counteract texture blurring that occurs when using the technique. With a Negative LOD Bias, applied via NVIDIA Inspector, texture quality can be restored, but unfortunately the correct value can only be ascertained through trial and error.

Following repeated calls from users for a solution, we introduced an automatic LOD Bias feature in October’s 310.33 beta driver. Now, users need only enable Sparse Grid Supersampling in the profile of a compatible game in NVIDIA Inspector, and the new feature will do the rest.

Our recommended Mass Effect 3 settings improve the quality and definition of the game’s textures with High Quality 16x Anisotropic Filtering, and all-but-eliminate aliased jagged edges through the use of 4xMSAA and 4x Sparse Grid Supersampling.

New SLI Profiles

As always, our new driver includes new profiles for today’s top titles, increasing multi-GPU performance.

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops II – Added and updated SLI profile
  • Hawken – Added SLI profile
  • Hitman: Absolution – Added SLI profile
  • Natural Selection 2 – Added SLI profile
  • Primal Carnage – Added SLI profile

Following 310.70’s creation, we updated our Far Cry 3 SLI profile to incorporate new ‘bits’ that prevent frame rate stuttering observed on some systems with the previous profile. To force an immediate download of the new profile, install 310.70, then right click the NVIDIA tray icon and select “Check for updates.”

Resolved Issues

Last but not least, 310.70 includes several fixes for commonly reported issues:

  • Assassin’s Creed 3: Shadow flickering resolved.
  • Battlefield 3: The game should no longer crash to desktop with the message “bf3.exe stopped working” on GeForce 500 and 600 series GPUs.
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 2: “Driver not responding” error should no longer occur on the GeForce GTX 570 and GTX 580 during the second half of the first level of the game, when the helicopter is shot by a rocket.
  • Hitman: Absolution: “Driver Not Responding” error should no longer occur when playing the game on a GeForce GTX 650 Ti with Global Illumination and Tessellation enabled.
  • Final Fantasy XIV Online: “DirectX device was lost” crash should no longer occur on GeForce GTX 680 systems.
  • GeForce GTX 690: Quad SLI GeForce GTX 690 systems should no longer lock-up when playing games in Surround.

You can download the GeForce 310.70 drivers with one click from the GeForce.co.uk homepage.

Plex for Windows 8 now available in the Windows Store

The guys over at Plex have released Plex for Windows 8.

Windows-8-x64

This is what they posted on their blog:

As you may already know, we’re huge fans of the Microsoft Windows 8 (née Metro) interface. We had a ton of fun writing the Plex app for Windows Phone 7, so when Windows 8 was released, we wasted no time in working to bring you a first class native application for the platform. We’d like to give you a quick visual overview, and then invite you to download it; it’s live in the Windows Store right now, at an introductory price of just $2.99!

I love the home screen for Plex on Windows 8. In my mind it’s a perfect amalgam of many of the visual idioms we’ve been exploring on many of the different Plex apps, but at the same time it looks like a (very lovely) completely native Windows 8 app. It’s got a background art slideshow, a gorgeous On Deck section, your myPlex queue, and much more.

Review of Ubisofts Far Cry 3

I’m going to make a lot of enemies in the intro to this review but here goes. I didn’t really like Far Cry 2. It looked good and there were some great ideas but I just got bored. I thought the constantly repeated fetch-quests, boring driving mechanics, constant fighting with random goons and total lack of narrative structure got really dull. The reason I mention this at the risk of pitchfork and torch wielding mobs coming after me is because I want you to understand how skeptical I was of Far Cry 3. With that sorted lets boot up the PS3 and begin.

STORY

After a cut-scene introducing the main characters and the overall aim of the game we get to the tutorial. Instantly the horrors of the situation your protagonist finds himself in are obvious and the atmosphere even here in the tutorial is fantastic and enveloping. It shows you most of the mechanics you will need to get started on Rook Island and at the same time continues the story. It’s brief and informative, as a good tutorial should be.

As you continue your journey you will see some truly horrifying events unfold on Rook Island and the character development is absolutely superb. Accompanied by some top-notch voice acting and at times scarily accurate facial expressions you feel completely involved with all the characters in Far Cry 3. The story missions are all varied and you never feel like you are repeating a task over and over. It all comes together to create a well structured and driven story.

OTHER THINGS TO DO

When you check the map for some other activities you are presented with many, many options and a map worthy of Just Cause 2. Uncovering the map is done by finding radio masts, climbing to the top of them and flipping a switch. Not only will this unlock an area of the map it will make new guns available for free at shops. Once this is done you can see the side missions and various other tasks available in that region.

Far Cry 3 offers an abundance of varied and interesting tasks for you to complete. At first the map will have a lot of large red areas indicated a high enemy presence but taking over strongholds will unlock fast travel points and allow safe travel in a region. It will also unlock side missions like killing a certain enemy with a knife or take-down, hunting certain animals or performing special warrior trials.

The fast travel now works like most games where you just press “X” on the map icon, rather than having to manually travel to the bus stop first. The irony in this is that the vehicle handling is absolutely brilliant now and I try to find any excuse to not use the fast travel points. Coupled with the fact you can all but put a stop to the random encounters when you take over strongholds, traveling is not an issue.

To upgrade your holsters, ammo pouch capacity or even your wallet to hold more cash you will need to find, kill and skin the appropriate animals. To make health syringes or special syringes that offer temporary bonuses ranging from off the hip accuracy to invincibility you will need to pick certain amounts of different coloured plants. Once you have acquired the things you need you can go to the crafting menu in the pause menu and just press “X” to create it. I really appreciated not having to pointlessly go to a “crafting bench” or whatever and it helped keep the pace of the game up.

WEAPONS & SKILLS

The weapons are all great fun to use and I found myself using weapons I didn’t really need to use just to try them all out. Once you have the upgraded weapon holsters you can any four weapons you want on top of Molotovs, Frags, Mines and C4. And I mean all of those. Rather than the system in Far Cry 2 which didn’t really allow for any choice at all now I can have a Bow, a silenced sniper, an LMG and an RPG. Any four you want.

On top of that Each weapon can be customized with the usual weapon peripherals like scopes, extended mags, silencers and camos. As long as you have the cash they’re yours as soon as you want them. There are also signature weapons you can buy when you complete a certain amount of side missions or collectibles. They all come with extra attachments, more attachments or unique attachments and a special camo. For instance one of the assault rifles unlocked later on in the game comes with a silencer, which you can’t buy.

If all that wasn’t enough you get a very competent list of skills you can learn as you level up via acquiring XP from killing enemies and completing objectives. More health, faster movement, indefinite sprint, better health packs and faster reloads are just a few skills present. Although the most fun to be had here, and arguably on the entire game, are the take-downs. You start off with a simple take-down where you stab an enemy silently if he isn’t aware of you and move on to more advanced techniques like double take-downs or the ability to throw a knife and take-down another enemy silently at range.

VISUALS

Well Far Cry 3 looks good. It just looks so good, all the time. The lighting effects are stunning. Reflections, subtle glints and lens flares are created by a sun rise. It looks nearly as good as when you enter a cave and you flick your torch on. Or drive a boat and the water spray hits your face. Or the thick jungle with greenery galore. There really isn’t a bad texture to be found, the graphics truly are a joy to behold. Ubisoft show us the PS3 still has some fight left in it.

AUDIO

The music makes a really great backing to the visuals. It isn’t intrusive but it does add to the absolutely insane villains and truly tear-jerking character interaction. The dynamic score picks up when it’s needed and backs off when it isn’t. Weapon sounds are accurate and enjoyable and the thunder even has a delay after lightning. The only slight annoyance is the amount of base on the menu and map music, but it’s a niggle.

MULTI-PLAYER & Co-Op

This section pains me. So far you’ll probably notice I haven’t had a single problem with Far Cry 3 and that perfectly reflects my experience. Until I went on-line. I’m a huge fan of Co-Op and although I didn’t expect too much at first my perfect single player experience had raised my hopes. I was playing in the same room as my Co-Op partner so LAN was an obvious choice, except Far Cry 3 doesn’t support LAN. Never mind we’ll just do it on-line. After a quick load out customization we set off.

The generic mission of kill “THIS” set of enemies followed by repair the “INSERT VEHICLE TYPE HERE” then protect it, then kill “THIS” set of enemies seemed a little weak. But I enjoy Co-Op for the fun not the plot. However my partners mission objective wouldn’t move past one we’d already completed and we had to restart the level. Right from the start. And then it crashed. It’s linear and buggy and just doesn’t feel like Ubisoft have put any effort in whatsoever.

Moving to the multi-player I was happy to see that the levels and customizations I had earned from Co-Op had carried over. The kill-cam is really cool, it looks great and blends smoothly with the in game action. A genuinely unique feature is when a game ends the highest scoring player on the winning team gets to chose weather to punish the top scoring player of the opposing team or let him go. It’s nice to see something genuinely new in a game although I wonder if anyone will actually show respect to a worthy opponent. In one game their best player got approximately 2500 points and I got 5500 (I don’t know how our team lost!) but I wasn’t shown respect. Hopefully this doesn’t become the norm because it’s a great idea that’s well implemented.

Match-making was absolutely terrible and the party system doesn’t just add the party to a game like CoD does but instead sends a second invite that only works 50% of the time at best. I spent literally 15 minutes in one lobby and still didn’t get into a game. There were only about 700 people on at the time so hopefully that was the problem.

Once I got into a game the action was pretty fun but there were some horrible glitches and/or lag issues. The maps are quite well designed and the action is well paced when there is a full lobby but if you get into a game without a full lobby the maps are way too big.

CONCLUSION

There really needs to be two separate reviews for Far Cry 3. One for the single player and one for the multi-player. The multi-player isn’t what you expect to be the best part of a game like Far Cry but it was just so slow, buggy and badly designed that it really can’t go unanswered for. I would rather it hadn’t been on the game at all as it wouldn’t have tainted my experience.

On the other hand the single player of Far Cry 3 takes the facial animation and voice acting of LA:Noire, the free-roam of GTA, an upgrade system and narrative structure that wouldn’t be out of place in Mass Effect with the stealth of Hitman and set-pieces of CoD and shoves it into a beautiful tropical island with a bow and a machete. It is the best game I have ever been on tragically let down by sloppy multi-player and it is out of respect for the single player experience that it gets the final score it gets.

Far Cry 3 is available now on PS3, XBOX 360 and PC.

Activision has announced that Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker are bringing their talents to The Walking Dead video game.

As things are ramping up on the third season of AMC’s Emmy Award-winning drama “The Walking Dead”, Activision is proud to announce that series stars Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker will reprise their respective roles as fan-favourites Daryl and Merle Dixon in Activision’s upcoming The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct. Their addition is central to developer Terminal Reality’s commitment to delivering an engrossing, original experience that stays authentic to the characters, tone and storyline of the series Entertainment Weekly called the “greatest thriller ever produced for television.”

In the game, players assume the role of the mysterious, crossbow-wielding survivor Daryl Dixon. This first-person survival title takes place within the universe of “The Walking Dead” and before the events of the AMC show, following Daryl and his brother Merle on a gruesome journey to reach the supposed safety of Atlanta as the world around them ends. Reedus and Rooker will bring life to their characters’ desperate, unforgiving struggle against limited resources, the nightmarish walkers and, perhaps, their fellow survivors…

The Walking Dead video game is scheduled for release in 2013 for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation3 computer entertainment system, and Windows PC, and is currently rated “RP” (Rating Pending) by the ESRB.  For more information, visit www.TheWalkingDeadBegins.com

I am a big fan of both the comic and the TV show, and I really like what TellTale Games have done with their game so I am excited to see what Activision will bring.
