Lightning Returns at San Diego Comic Con

0

At San Diego Comic-Con yesterday Square Enix showed off new screenshots and a new trailer for LIGHTNING RETURNS: FINAL FANTASY XIII called “13 Days”.

The city of revelry, Yusnaan, now reveals some new elements from within its quarters: The Slaughterhouse is a brutal arena where battles between mighty combatants are held every night.

11086S(US)

Within the warehouse district of Yusnaan is the station – lying bare and deserted, it is in stark contrast to the bustle of the city’s centre. Also in Yusnaan are the warehouses that contain stockpiles of goods from all around the world.

11084Q(US)

Also being highlighted, is some further detail about the battle system: In some battles, you can destroy sections of a monster foe. If you succeed in disabling a specific area, the enemy will not only be weakened but you can also gain different items as rewards once the battle is won.

11079F

There is also the introduction of a counter attack system! Counterblow is effective against an enemy’s physical attacks, but it is powerless against magic and some special attacks, so take care when using it. By timing your counter perfectly with the enemy’s attack, you can render it ineffective and land a punishing blow of your own that can easily stagger the foe! This ability uses up a large portion of the ATB gauge however, so it is important to only use it in the right situation.

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cW8Mzt6zRVI?feature=player_detailpage%5D

Coming to Xbox 360 and Ps3 out in 11th February 2014 for the US and the 14th February 2014 for the EU.

Preview of Beatbuddy: Tale of The Guardians by THREAKS

0

So, you play as an underwater blue blob thing, your Beatbuddy, to solves platforming puzzles that conform to, or create, the games’ oh so prominent music. Sounds pretty reasonable to me. To be fair, one of the most popular games ever is based on a plumber killing a dinosaur to save a princess named after a piece of fruit. With that crucial analysis complete let us begin.

German Indie developer THREAKS where kind enough to let me try out their new tittle, Beatbudy: Tale of The Guardians. Right from the word go you’re introduced to the unbearably catchy beats that will accompany you, and your Beatbuddy, on your journey. I challenge anyone to play Beatbuddy and not get caught up with the beat. The entire world and its puzzles revolve around the music. Even your cool little Beatbuddy starts dancing if you leave him alone.

BB_S_2_BIG

Not to say the music is just regurgitated generic background music but is in fact rather different and unique, utilizing all sorts of genres and sticking a nice bass beat behind it. The music is cleverly layered so that different obstacles in the world contribute in different ways to the music. It must have been painstaking to create such intricate and challenging environments and then make sure they’re accurately timed to the music.

The hand drawn environments are artistic and frankly gorgeous. The underwater setting adds nicely to the slick feel of the game ensuring your character moves smoothly at all times. It looks nice, it sounds good and it’s actually challenging at points too. You can often get by relying on good old fashioned platforming ability but for times when that doesn’t work you can call on your musical timing to help. Most of the puzzles can be solved, or at least made easier, by moving to a certain beat; which is clever and more importantly requires good level design. There’s enough variety and complexity in the puzzles that I found myself wanting more when I finished.

The only problem I had was that I found some of the more challenging sections a little tricky to complete on my keyboard. There’s only so much finesse and accuracy that four buttons can provide you with. Switching to a gamepad allows for much more precision and I found it much easier to get my Beatbuddy to go where I wanted him. Maybe I’ve got a crappy keyboard (or maybe I’m just not very good with it) but if you’ve got a pad spare I’d use it. Beatbuddy does feel like it would be at home on a console but unfortunately doesn’t have a scheduled console entry. Hopefully the XBOX ONE and PS4 will put an end to indie developers been unable to get their titles to a console, or at least make it more appealing to do so. But for now here’s Beatbuddy’s new trailer.

So long as THREAKS provide us with enough well designed levels and interesting music Beatbuddy will be challenging, addictive and refreshing. The only problem now is getting that beat out of my head. Dum dum dum dum.

Beatbuddy: Tale of The Guardians is due for release on August 6 2013 on Windows PC, MAC, and Linux.

The Making of Flashback

0

Ubisoft is bringing Flashback back after 20 years after the original game’s launch, Conrad is enlisted back to active service for the triumphant return of one of the most acclaimed franchises in gaming history.

20130717_Flashback_Logo

It is Flashback re-imagined. The original Core-Team revamped their own creation, leveraging the best of today’s technology while remaining true to the classic side-scroller that set the standards of the genre in the 90’s.

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fYIkmi9_nA?feature=player_detailpage%5D

  • One of the best adventure-action games ever created re-imagined by its creators. It’s the same team. It’s the same passion. Only this time, they have had much more firepower at their disposal to recreate the legendary classic!
  • Gorgeous graphics, amazing animations. It’s the Flashback you’ve always dreamed of. True to the original spirit but made a million times better by using modern engines such as Unreal and Havok. The makeover is completely stunning.
  • It’s all about Gameplay. The team modernized gameplay mechanics, making the game more reactive, offering new features, like gadgets and an experience progression system. But the developers kept the original formula in mind: a fine balance between rolling and shooting, exploring remote space stations and obliterating hostile alien planets.
  • Bringing back new memories. The story was revamped to speak to 21st century gamers. Most of the cast of the original game is still here – Conrad, the Morphs – but you can expect new characters and a few twists you’re definitely not going to forget… this time.

20130717_Flashback_Screenshot_02

Microsoft announced last week that Flashback HD will be part of the Summer of Arcade and will launch on XBLA on 21st August for 800 Microsoft Points PC & PSN version no release dates/price at the moment.

20130717_Flashback_Screenshot_08

Even though the plot remains faithful to the original game, the missions have been revamped to speak to 21st century gamers. The maps have been complexified and now benefit from a range of details and animations even wider. Try not to lose your way in the deep jungle!

20130717_Flashback_Screenshot_07

In addition to the updated version of the game, Ubisoft is pleased to announce that the original Flashback will be included so players can play the original game that started it all. Now is your chance to play the re-imaged cult classic hit as well as the original game you may have missed.
