Review: Q.U.B.E Director’s Cut

0

As if being lost in space wasn’t bad enough this guy is also trapped in an asylum-like padded cube that mysteriously holds a series of puzzles. The Director’s Cut of Q.U.B.E adds a plot and with it some much needed intrigue. One thing I absolutely cannot do even once during this review is mention Portal. Damn it. Well with that ruined in the very first paragraph I suppose it wouldn’t do much harm to consider a few comparisons to what is probably gamings most popular puzzle game. It certainly isn’t a bad role model.

Q.U.B.E’s introduction is a very well considered approach and gently introduces the different coloured objects and the ways in which they can be manipulated and interacted with. A simple one off interaction followed by an easy example puzzle to solve will have you very comfortably progressing in the early stages. It’s nice not to spend time wondering what options you have to solve an area and instead spend your time considering how to solve it. That’s not to say Q.U.B.E stays simple throughout but just that it is extremely good at introducing concepts to you at the right pace.

There isn’t any explanation given through speech, written signs or the worst option by far and my personal nemesis, the pop-up box. Everything is learned through exploration of areas and the puzzles that are presented to you. It’s thoughtfully designed the way a tutorial should be that allows you to stay immersed and enjoy some actual gameplay.

Sadly less though was given to the plot which has been added to the Director’s Cut. The structure that comes with the plot is definitely a big plus point. But the first communication with not-GLaDOS strips you completely out of your mysterious surroundings to explain that you have forgotten your memory and don’t know who you are. You are solving the puzzles within the strange object to save Earth. And you will lose contact with your new friend every time a planet orbits which you might imagine will coincide usefully with certain progression points in the game.

It’s totally counter to the smooth and subtle tutorial to have someone explain why you’re nameless and why they won’t be in constant contact. We’ve all played games before we know you won’t be in contact all the time the explanation does nothing but draw attention to a convention we all expect and ignore. The same goes for who the protagonist is. The mystery of the unknown is a far bigger draw to keep playing than someone stating that we don’t know because you lost your memory. It’s a shame that the good work on the tutorial is forgotten after only a couple of lines of dialogue. Games like this rely on the unknown to create atmosphere but you can’t just state blatantly that something is weird – it just doesn’t work.

This is what happens when Tetris blocks escape

Despite that there is a certain atmosphere to Q.U.B.E. There’s an oddness to the place and the puzzles being presented to you is definitely not exactly normal. It’s a good job your suit kept you alive as clearly stated in the opening speech. It’s also immensely useful that it was equipped with colourful block manipulators because that’s exactly what you’ll need to solve the Q.U.B.E and save the Earth. Handy.

The puzzles themselves are creative enough and offer some nice complexity at times. Areas are well crafted and the thoughtfulness that went into the starting sections of the game persists throughout. Often you will spend little time finding what to do and face the task of how to complete your objective. The pace keeps to about the right level and everything moves along nicely with the occasional addition of plot told through a one way conversation.

There is enough creativity that Q.U.B.E doesn’t become boring but having said that it also only lasts for a couple of hours and doesn’t really get the chance to become dull. There are enough solid mechanics in Q.U.B.E that the game could have gone on longer. It might also have given the plot more chance to develop but sadly a couple of hours is all you get.

How many of you would instantly turn away from the arrow?

There isn’t really much going on with the audio to speak of, everything is pretty much just as good as it needs to be. The sound effect when landing after a jump for example sounds a bit dubious when you jump repeatedly to climb blocks. The visuals are actually very nice and the bright primary coloured puzzle pieces are used well to create vibrant areas with a bright white background. There isn’t much in the way of variety, aside from the use of colours, but the pieces you see are well textured and realistic.

The Director’s Cut adds a vague plot and some nifty secrets but not much besides from the original Q.U.B.E. There’s a solid puzzle game to enjoy but it’s never fully realised and there isn’t enough time for a real atmosphere and plot to build up. A good atmosphere takes a least 20/30 minutes to build and that soon eats into your 2/3 hour playthrough. Still a solid first person puzzler that’s well worth playing.

Why I’m Excited to play Destiny’s new expansion The Taken King

0

Activision and Bungie are about to release a new expansion pack for Destiny called The Taken King, and I got to play some of it recently and it made me want to play Destiny again.

TTK_Horizontal

Before I talk about The Taken King, I wanted to say why I stopped playing Destiny. Like a lot of players, as soon as Destiny was released last September I started playing it a lot. It didn’t take me very long to finish the story campaign, and like a lot of players I was left a little disappointed.

Destiny was supposed to be massive, so how did I complete the story that quickly? I could play in the Crucible and other PvP areas, but that wasn’t what I was really interested in. I could try the Strike missions but I found it hard to find people who wanted to play when I did, which meant playing with “randoms” which more often than not had them dropping out before the Strike was over leaving it very hard to finish. But I gave it a try and I waited for the first expansion pack to come out. It did, and I finished that story in a few hours! So back to waiting for the next pack – The House of Wolves – to be released.

This one when it came out was a lot better and had a longer story, but still, it felt like something was missing for me, so I stopped playing. Then Activision and Bungie announced The Taken King, and suddenly I was interested again, although I was a little dubious that it wouldn’t live up to the hype. The pack would have a new story campaign and quests, new enemies and locations, new Strikes and Crucible maps, and much more, but more interesting to me was the new set of subclasses for my Guardian, along with new weapons and gear.

So when I was given the opportunity to have a play on one of the new story missions I jumped at the chance. I don’t want to give anything away with the story, but I found myself really enjoying playing Destiny again. I had the chance to play with the new subclasses for all three Guardian types which bring along a new super. For the Warlocks there is a devastating electric storm, Hunters have a really cool energy bow and the Titans (my particular Guardian) has a flaming hammer that is just so much fun to wield. Just getting to play that one mission really sparked my interest in Destiny again and so in preparation for The Taken King I dusted off my Titan and have been playing again, and I have to say I have noticed a lot of subtle little changes in the game since the last time I really played it.

Luke Timmins is an Engineering Lead at Bungie and I got to sit down with him and talk about The Taken King and various changes the team have been implementing to make Destiny even better, so over to Luke:

Destiny: The Taken King will be released September 15th on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and I can’t wait to play more of it.

Zombi out now for PC, Xbox One and PS4

0

Ubisoft today released ZOMBI, a digital version of the Wii U survival-horror game, for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC.

ZOMBI_Logo

ZOMBI puts players in the middle of an infected London, where an outbreak has distorted the population into mindless monsters preying on the flesh of the few remaining survivors. All the ingredients of the acclaimed fear-fueled first-person shooter are back, delivering all of the intense chaos and tension to multiple new platforms.

ZOMBI_SC_Buckingham

In this reawakened version, a number of updates have been introduced for the latest consoles including new melee weapons, faster load times, improved flashlight gameplay and improved visual effects.

ZOMBI puts an emphasis on self-preservation and pushes players to do whatever it takes to survive against the zombie attack. ZOMBI enforces the feeling of suspense and oppression by disabling the pause function even while players search through the bug-out-bag in the menu. A necessary component for each player’s survival, the bug-out-bag contains all their tools, inventory, first aid kits, maps, and more. The game also relies on the permadeath system where character death is final, forcing you to respawn as a new character without your previous inventory collection or bug-out bag. The question remains: should players risk confronting their old, infected character to get their bag back or abandon their inventory and start again?

ZOMBI is now available worldwide as a digital download for £14.99.

Volume (Original Soundtrack) available now

0

BAFTA Award nominated composer David Housden, in partnership with Laced Records, has today announces the worldwide launch of the Original Soundtrack to Volume, the latest creation from award-winning indie developer, Mike Bithell. The soundtrack is available to buy from today across all major stores, including iTunes, Amazon and bandcamp, priced £7.99, as well as being available to stream on Spotify and Apple Music.

 Volume OST

Set in the near future, Volume is a reimaging of the classic Robin Hood saga, blending slick, sci-fi visuals with tense, stealth-driven gameplay. The game features a star-studded cast, including YouTube personality Charlie McDonnell as the protagonist Locksley, acclaimed comedian and author Danny Wallace, and award-winning actor Andy Serkis as the villainous Gisborne.

Taking its cues from classic sci-fi scores, as well as modern electronica, the music for Volume reflects the broken, misaligned world in which the characters dwell; a dissonant, glitch-laden soundscape, often swelling into epic crescendo as the urgency of the narrative grows. The soundtrack fuses medieval instrumentation, with contemporary percussive beds and synths, post-rock type ambiences and cinematic grandeur.

“It’s a modern day interpretation of the Robin Hood legend and I wanted to find a unique way to represent that in the music,” said David. “By juxtaposing period instrumentation with more contemporary cinematic elements and ambiences, I created something which hopefully compliments the visuals of the game at face value, as well as alluding to its roots in the past.”

Housden created many of the ambiences by manipulating source recordings taken at Sherwood Forest; “Recordings taken from banging swords and suits of armor make up a lot of the percussion, and we even went as far as to go to an archery range and record a variety of sounds from the flight of an arrow, to the impacts on targets, in order to create some unique cinematic sound design potential.”

David collaborated previously with Mike on the critically acclaimed Thomas Was Alone. Both the game and soundtrack enjoyed rave reviews across the board, receiving BAFTA nominations for ‘Best Story’, ‘Best Original Music’ and ‘Best Performance’ (for which it went on to win); as well as Honourable mentions from the Independent Games Festival for Excellence in Visual Design and Excellence in Audio.

Preview: Super Dungeon Bros

0

Prior to E3, We had a chance to look at Super Dungeon Bros, a co-op dungeon brawler from React Games, and published by Wired Productions. Due for release on Xbox One, PS4, Windows 10, Steam and Mac, Super Dungeon Bros is an indie game, but one with character.

super_dungeon_bros_screenshot_2

Often, we’re asked to look at indie games, and they’re either amazing, or simply not up-to-scratch, made by one or two developers trying their hand at all aspects of game design. Where Super Dungeon Bros differs, is the indie ethos, but coupled with the steadying hand of experienced developer and publisher, Wired Productions helping to steer the game to release on a more solid footing.

The game takes place over a number of worlds, including Cryptheim, Chilheim, and another that we weren’t allowed to talk about when we got hands-on. Now, while the game has its issues, as would any game in development, Super Dungeon Bros shows a lot of promise, thanks to great production values, interesting mechanics, and its own sense of style.

As you begin your game, your task is to navigate the medieval fantasy world of Rockheim, through its procedurally generated dungeons. Along the way, you’ll pick up loot, upgrade your weapons, rather than characters, and generally work together to defeats hordes of undead. In short, it’s good fun, and helped by the competition element evidenced in the leaderboards after each dungeon.

Upgrading your weapon rather than character is an interesting choice, because it allows you to choose your weapon each time you play, promoting short but enjoyable sessions, instead of one player continuously upgrading their characters and having a big advance over new players.

That becomes more important online, with Windows 10  & Xbox One cross-play from launch, something we’re interested to see in action, although we weren’t able to see during our demo. Windows 10 & Xbox One cross play is a big deal for Microsoft, and one it should throw its weight behind when games start using the service later this year.

super_dungeon_bros_screenshot_6

Don’t worry if you’re not a social gamer, because you can play the whole thing as a single player experience, and we’re excited to try that element out in the near future.

The characters you play as are Axl, Freddie, Lars and Ozzie, all based on famous rock stars, and each with their own personality. While a little repetitive in the build we saw, it was an early one, so we can expect a little more variety in terms of voice acting. However, there’s enough there to reassure us that the characters will be interesting in their own right.

Once you’re in the dungeons, things get hectic quite quickly, and you’ll need to work together to overcome boss fights, or even when the screen fills with enemies, but that’s where the ‘bro moves’ come in. We tried out the Bronado, which is where each bro climbs on one another and unleashes a special attack, effectively spinning to mop up the enemies on-screen before they have a chance to attack. It’s fun, and visually impressive. We’re hoping there’s plenty more of these to come in the final version of the game.

Of the small section we played, although the dungeons are procedural, some of them did appear a little similar, or simple, and there were a few bugs present, but as with most indie games, that’s something that should be fixed by release. Our hands-on was good fun, and we’re hoping for more modes, and speed running could be interesting with Super Dungeon Bros, as the game is ideal for this, but we’ll reserve judgement on that for now. There’s a way to go, but Super Dungeon Bros is shaping up well, and with a little extra spit and polish, it could be a one to watch.

As Bianca delves deeper, she begins to discover that nothing is as it once seemed: friendships are lost, relationships questioned  and could her all-time crush, Toby, (Nick Eversman) be in on the game too? In a race to right these wrongs, Bianca sets out on a one-woman mission to uncover the DUFF within everyone, even Madison, with hilarious consequences.

The DUFF is a brutally honest and riotous take on dealing with teen angst and high school power struggles based on the hugely popular novel by Kody Keplinger and directed by Ari Sandel. Featuring an all-star cast including Mae Whitman, Robbie Amell, Bella Thorne and comedy favourite Ken Jeong, the film has proved a big hit amongst critics and opens us up to the DUFF within us all.

“‘Rogue One’ takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe,” says Kathleen Kennedy. “It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know. Gareth is such an innovative director and I’m so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he’s selected for ‘Rogue One.’”

Veteran ILM visual effects supervisor John Knoll, who shares a long history with the Star Wars movies, dating back to the mid-1990s, originated the idea for the movie. Allison Shearmur (“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” “Cinderella”), John Knoll, Simon Emanuel (“The Dark Knight Rises,” “Fast & Furious 6”) and Jason McGatlin (“Tintin,” “War of the Worlds”) are executive producers. Kiri Hart and John Swartz (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens”) are co-producers.

To create the lived-in, realistic feel of “Rogue One,” Edwards chose Greig Fraser (“Zero Dark Thirty,” “Foxcatcher”) to be his director of photography and Neil Corbould (“Black Hawk Down,” “Gladiator,” “Saving Private Ryan”) to be his special effects supervisor.  Star Wars and Lucasfilm veteran Doug Chiang (“Star Wars: Episodes I-II,” “Forrest Gump”) and Neil Lamont (supervising art director for the “Harry Potter” series, “Edge of Tomorrow”) will be the production designers. Additional crew members will include stunt coordinator Rob Inch (“World War Z,” Marvel’s “Captain America: The First Avenger”), creature effects supervisor Neal Scanlan (“Prometheus”) and co-costume designers Dave Crossman (costume supervisor for the “Harry Potter” series, “Saving Private Ryan”) and Glyn Dillon (costume concept artist for “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” “Jupiter Ascending”).
