This past week saw MCM Comic Con return to London, and one of the press panels was for Arrow and featured Willa Holland, who plays Thea Queen / Speedy, and Katrina Law who plays Nyssa.

Just as a small spoiler warning, the person who asked the first question asked about the end of the season finale that aired last week in the US, so if you haven’t seen it yet you might want to skip the first few minutes of the video.

RAMS

Winner of the prestigious ‘Un Certain Regard’ at Cannes, Grímur Hákonarson’s box-office smash-hit RAMS finally arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on 30 May 2016, courtesy of Soda Pictures. Set in a secluded valley in Iceland, brothers Gummi (Sigurjónsson) and Kiddi (Júlíusson) live side by side, tending to their sheep. Their ancestral sheep-stock is considered one of the country’s best, and they are repeatedly awarded for their prized rams who carry an ancient lineage. However, although they share the land and a similar way of life, Gummi and Kiddi have not spoken to each other in four decades.

When a lethal disease suddenly infects Kiddi’s sheep, the entire valley comes under threat, prompting the authorities to decide to cull all the animals in the area to contain the outbreak. This is a near death sentence for the local farmers, whose sheep are their main source of income, and many abandon their land. But Gummi and Kiddi don’t give up so easily – and each sibling tries to stave off the disaster in his own fashion: Kiddi by using his rifle and Gummi by using his wits. As the authorities close in, the brothers will need to come together to save both themselves and the special breed passed down for generations from extinction…

Review: Homefront: The Revolution

0

The original Homefront is definitely a game with a tarnished name. I have a handful of fond memories of some decent multiplayer that even employed some new ideas. For some reason my only memory of the single player campaign is of wandering around a makeshift farm crafting from the finest junk. Sadly what was probably a 10 minute sequence sticks in my memory largely because the game was only about 3 hours long. I’m all for quality over quantity but that’s close to insulting. You would think then that the new Homefront might want to distance itself from that. Well aside from avoiding calling itself Homefront 2 and opting for Homefront: The Revolution there is little evidence of moving away from that past.

HFTR-CO-OP-ALL-MEDIA-02So with all the memories of the prequel unfortuna tely fresh in my mind I got my hands dirty and took my first steps into the world of revolution. Turns out the rebels lead a strangely mundane life considering they are almost constantly persecuted by phenomenally well equipped soldiers. I literally spent the first hour walking from checkpoint to checkpoint soaking up the supposedly hard-hitting gritty atmosphere. There’s no doubt there are some horrendous moments that make you wince but the substandard voice acting in between instantly brings you back out of any atmosphere.

As do the tedious objectives that give your introduction a painfully slow pace. The map is awkward to follow and there are no signs of intuition or user friendliness. There’s also some weird stealth mechanic in play that allows you to fail if you approach too close to any of the guards. With only the ability to walk and follow way points it’s difficult to see the point and just confuses the situation. It’s slow as it is all you need is to fail and have to replay sections.

Input lag is another thing I found to be a serious issue. It took a good second or even more before my camera would start turning and while not unworkable it does make Homefront overly clunky. But that keeps well with the rest of the controls in all honesty which are just bizarre or plain wrong. I can think of thousands of better layouts from basically any FPS that would be better on my trusty 360 pad on my PC. It’s hardly an uncommon setup to account for.

The game takes a huge chunk of that first hour just to tell you the buttons which in all honesty shouldn’t even have been something that needed describing at all. I want to pick up a pad and instinctively know what to do and how to control my character. Or have something like on screen buttons like Hitman. In fairness Hitman goes against quite a few conventions but screen prompts are minimal and effective as I rarely hit the wrong button. Homefront frequently requires me to check and see how to do a task or press all the wrong buttons first.

HFTR-CO-OP-ALL-MEDIA-04Eventually I got some action and things just keep getting worse. A gun and an off-road motorbike. What more does an aspiring rebel need? I was a bit surprised by the extent of the gun mod I was provided with at first given that you casually remove the entire slide of the gun and replace it with another which makes it an automatic SMG. Is that how guns work? I’m no gun owner but I have my doubts on this one. Either way it is kinda cool and was the first thing I did in Homefront that I actually enjoyed.

Firing the weapon on the other hand is a totally different story. It feels dated and awkward. There is none of the light responsive feel of FPS’s from the last decade or so of gaming. Aiming down sights is hideously limiting and the view I found very restrictive. Recoil is massive and I just generally didn’t enjoy using the weapons in any way. Other than constantly converting it from a pistol to an SMG, when I remembered the buttons correctly.

Riding the bike around the map is pretty much the same story. It’s sort of cool and the idea is nice but the actual control system let’s the whole thing down. Flying up homemade wooden ramps across gaps, sliding off the bike and engaging the guards with their superior equipment could have been, and should have been, a joy. But it doesn’t work like that. You’re not given the tools to create that fun in any way. And even the tools you are given aren’t even close to the best they could be.

HFTR-CO-OP-ALL-MEDIA-06

Poor voice acting and a complete lack of pacing make sure you never really get sacked into the gritty atmosphere that could have been a big part of Homefront. You just miss out on it because you’re constantly sick of yet another badly scripted cutscene featuring ‘whoever that is’ and ‘what’s-his-face’. It makes it difficult to care. But the worst sin in Homefront is in the control systems and the mechanics. It feels dated and cheap. The control system appears to have had as little attention as the pacing of the game. Having to remember buttons all the time is a pain and once again drags you out of the experience and input lag on this level is just appalling.

There’s really no redeeming features in Homefront that I can think of. It looks pretty nice but to say looks aren’t everything is an understatement in this case. I never even got chance to enjoy them because I was having such a bad time. Wasted opportunity to refresh a franchise that did have potential. I can’t recommend Homefront to anyone really if I plan on sleeping tonight. Save your hard earned money and give this one a miss.

Review: ACWorldwide Starwars Stormtrooper Bluetooth speaker

1

Now for a review of the Stormtrooper Bluetooth speakers from AC Worldwide which also offers a C3PO versions of its Star Wars Bluetooth speakers aswell. You can pick each one up at the likes of Amazon and from AC Worldwide for £149 each, but AC Worldwide recommends you buy them as a bundle for £250, as you can pair them up for a stereo experience.

hdr

The Stormtrooper speaker is a work of art in its own right, they’re a work of art. Just taking the speaker out of the box, got my heart pumping with giddiness, I had the feeling like a child again.

hdr

A closer look at the eye grill for the Stormtrooper

AC Worldwide has gone to painstaking lengths to design both products to be as authentic as possible, and it really shows.

hdr

With the Stormtrooper’s grilles and shiny white and black plastic it makes look like it came straight from the original Star Wars movies’ prop locker from the set.

hdr

The speaker measures around 30cm tall, the circular base units have a large diameter of 20cm, meaning they’ll need a fair amount of space on your shelves. What’s more, despite their heft, they only feature tiny 2200mAh batteries, which only last for between four and five hours, depending on your usage and volume levels.

Specifications

  • Output Speakers: 3W x 2 – 32mm 4ᘯ
  • Output Ported Subwoofer: 15W – 102mm 2.3ᘯ
  • Frequency Response: 20HZ -20KHZ
  • DC input: 9v, 2.5h
  • Battery: 8.4V,2200mAh
  • Battery time:  4-5 hours
  • Battery Charge Time: 2-3 hours
  • Bluetooth Version: CSR 4.0
  • Hands Free phone answer.
  • USB charger
  • AUX
  • NFC
  • Bass +/-
  • Mains multi plug adapter

Bluetooth profile

  • Bluetooth v 4.0
  • HFP v1.6 wideband speech (HD voice ready)
  • HSP v1.2
  • A2DP v1.2
  • AVRCP v1.4
  • DI v1.3
  • Support for smartphone

The Star Wars heads have been designed and produced using multiple moulded components: the Stormtrooper helmet for example has 48 different parts.

hdr

Sound is delivered through a 2.1-channel design, with two, 3W drivers behind the eyes and a downward-facing ported subwoofer on the bottom.

cof

They also come with NFC (Near Field Communication) for instant pairing with compatible devices and double up as a hands-free speaker for taking phone calls.

To add a bit of fun and authenticity to the speakers, when a Bluetooth device is paired the characters will say either “I do believe they think I am some sort of God” for C3P0 or “Move along.” for the Stormtrooper.

cof
Comes with a nice bag for the Stormtrooper, user guide, multi power adaptors and cleaning cloth
AC Worldwide has obtained a license from Disney and, as a result, the speakers comes in a fully branded collectors box. With each speaker comes supplied with a carry case, cleaning cloth, auxiliary cable and power adaptor (with a USB slot on the back of the speaker you can plugin a USB to charger your phone if you need to).

hdr

No matter what genre of music I played through the speaker, the clarity was crystal clear and the sound remarkably warm to listen to.
The two big areas that really impressed me were the speaker was the Bluetooth range and the diffusion of sound from it. Bluetooth I had no problem walking round pretty much the entire house while paired and the connection didn’t cut out. During one session with the speaker, which was located in a middle room in the house, I walked to the end of my lengthy garden with my phone in my pocket and the music still carried on.
 Video from AC Worldwide
Nice little extra feature on the speaker is an aux input so you can connect wired devices if you wish and the ability to receive calls through it. You can also pair up to two Star Wars speakers with one device so you can get one of each design and give yourself a fantastic audio setup (I only had one speaker to test for this review but I has seen and heard what two speakers paired together can do and it was epic).

Overall
If you are a Star Wars fan or looking for a Bluetooth speaker with a difference then look no further than the Star Wars speakers from AC Worldwide for £149.

Review: Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

The champion of PlayStation exclusives returns for its final outing under the Naughty Dog banner. The Uncharted series has always pushed and stretched the capabilities of its hardware in terms of looks. Its titular Drake has consistently nailed the loveable, roguish scamp archetype and the gameplay has always been as addictive as the storytelling. Can ‘A Thief’s End’ deliver on its past successes whilst also rounding out with a fitting conclusion? I wouldn’t bet against it.

Uncharted-4_drake-looking1
It probably looks even better in-game

As the majority of you will know by now, the story of Nathan’s once lost brother ‘Sam’ is the anchor of the narrative. His disappearance and occlusion from the previous games in the series is dealt with in a respectable manner and fortunately, didn’t come across as too forced or unbelievable. Before Drake’s inevitable adventure begins though, we get a glimpse at a retired Nathan and Elena. Gone are the days of jumping from cliff to cliff, perilously hanging by your fingertips, whilst of course being shot at. Instead, things have slowed down drastically; with the closest thing to combat being taking cover in the attic beside collected treasures of the past, whilst shooting at hanging targets with a sarcastically sounding toy gun.

It’s a slow start to the game, what with all the exposition, character relationships and motives to set up, but it’s honestly something I enjoyed. You’ll learn more about Nathan’s past, younger, life in a few early chapters than the entirety of the Uncharted back catalogue put together. During these measured, more deliberate sections that are spaced sporadically throughout the game, you’ll often be able to interact with items and people too, giving a much deeper feeling of immersion. Short, humble scenes such as watching Nathan and Elena playfully interact in such an engaging and believable way, really helps give it a cinematic feel in a way that no other game has. Besides, nothing has put a grin quite so daft on my face in a while, than revisiting my favourite Wumpa fruit collecting marsupial, in one of the best throwback references I’ve ever seen.

20160224-Uncharted-4-Story-Trailer-11
It’s probably not possible to take a bland screenshot of this game

As pacing dictates however, it’s of course not all about leisurely strolling through areas looking for collectibles and optional conversations. The Uncharted series has always been fairly good with regards to breaking up the action and set pieces with a little cliff face clambering. A Thief’s End expands further on this by adding more variance to the mix. On top of the expected shooting, climbing and puzzle sections, there are also chapters that feature large open areas to explore with a vehicle that includes all aspects of the game. The car handling felt unexpectedly solid and helps feature in some newer variations of puzzles due to its included winch too.

Another new gameplay feature is your grappling hook which, sadly, you can only use at certain, preordained locations. It does however add an occasional tenseness to the climbing sections where at points, you’ll slide down a shingled incline and be forced to grapple to safety at the last minute. Something to note, is that swinging on the rope never feels cumbersome or obscured in some way by the camera; if I’m honest, I’m struggling to think of a game that last left me with that impression.

In terms of the more combat oriented sections of the game, Uncharted fans of the past will be pleased to know that the gunplay feels improved, yet still features that familiar feeling of you not being a soldier with perfect accuracy. Frustratingly the dreaded ‘heavy’ enemies are still present; however thankfully, they’re in a much less frequent abundance. Due to the grappling hook, and the much more varied settings you’ll fight in, combat is now much more focused on movement and flanking. You’ll rarely find a spot that you can just stay in and pick off enemies from afar, in part due to the inclusion of some destructible cover, and also due to the constant need for ammo (especially on the higher difficulties).

mad-preview-still-04
Is that a cheeky reference?

Enemy AI can be a little hit and miss depending upon the situation. When you’re in full gun raging combat they’ll flank, get advantageous positions and utilise their weaponry properly. However if you take the newly implemented stealthy route, making use of tall grass and marking enemies, they won’t bat an eyelid that their best buddy who they’d been chatting with, has suddenly disappeared into the undergrowth. It’s not the most convincing by a long way, but it does work well within the game. Especially so when you get seen at the last minute, and have to immediately prepare for the onslaught of reinforcements. Losing track of your attackers can be difficult, but it’s certainly possible to begin your stealthy streak again and slowly work through the ranks. Either that or just enjoy running from cover to cover in a blind panic hoping to god you find a grenade or two. Both ways are fun.

Once you’ve run through the 15+ hours it’ll take to get through the campaign, and spent way too long creating masterpieces in the excellent ‘photo mode’, there’s also the solid multiplayer offering to sink your teeth into. Featuring modes like team deathmatch and twists on capture the flag, it features both ranked and unranked playlists depending on how serious you want to take it. It might not be the real draw of an Uncharted game to a great many people, however it can be fun using ‘Mystical’ power ups to either aid teammates or hinder the enemy. It runs smoothly, and at a high frame rate too. Even better news is that according to Naughty Dog, all future multiplayer maps and modes will be included at no future cost, which is certainly nice to hear.

It wouldn’t be an Uncharted game without impeccable voice acting and script work either. Alongside series mainstay Nolan North who, once again, nails the charismatic feel of Drake, Troy Baker does an excellent job as his brother Sam. The general mockery the two indulge in with each other is surpassed only by Emily Rose’s performance as Elena alongside Nate in some of the early scenes.

PLUNDER_SCREEN_07
The multiplayer’s a tad less serious

From the first time, all those years ago, when a certain Mr Drake first stood knee deep in water; then having only the submerged parts of his clothing appear wet, I was convinced of the boundary pushing studio. Over the years, the series has consistently been at the forefront of animations, attention to detail and wonderfully detailed expanses. Thankfully, they seem to be stuck in their ways. Before the narrative, action scenes or even any aspect of gameplay begins, you’ll of course notice the graphics. Vistas, weather effects, explosions, they’re all outstanding, but they didn’t leave an impression in the same way that the subtle facial animations between Nathan and Elena did. The small, realistic expressions between the two as they were talking are simply akin to nothing I’ve seen before in a game. It looks incredible.

A Thief’s End is one of seemingly few, ‘must own’ titles on the PS4. The story, character relationships, pace driven gameplay and astounding graphical and sound design make for an epic journey. There are a few niggles, such as the roll/dodge being also mapped to the cover button, and that maybe a few too many cliff ledges and bridges collapse along the way. But aside from those, it’s everything and more you’ve come to expect from the franchise and studio; Nathan Drakes’ final chapter couldn’t have ended much better.

Hearthstone is a brand new addition for 2016 to the ESL UK Premiership which has been running for the last two years. The ESL UK Premiership is dedicated exclusively to focus on and uncover UK eSports talent as all competitors must be residents of the United Kingdom or Republic of Ireland, making it the only tournament of its kind dedicated to UK grass roots competitive pay for Hearthstone.

eslprem_hs_mcm

“The ESL UK Premiership has proved itself again as an opportunity for UK players to compete against other UK players, in regular weekly broadcasts featuring UK talent,” commented Spike Laurie, UK co-Managing Director at ESL. “That means a growing UK scene and it’s our core tenant at ESL UK. This weekend’s event is the culmination of months of the highest level of UK competitive play, we’re very glad we’re able to exhibit it live on stage, in London and to the hundreds of thousands of people who will tune in online.”

ESL held open qualifiers over an eight week period, whittling the competition down to four players playing in this year’s final. The total prize pool for the tournament equals £6,400 with the winner taking home £2,500.

“The interest in the addition of Hearthstone to the ESL UK Premiership has been incredible,” added James Dean, UK co-Managing Director at ESL. “The growing audience figures and level of play in its first season has been superb, and we’re extremely excited to see Hearthstone become a regular fixture in the ESL UK Premiership roster.”

Those attending MCM London Comic Con can visit the ESL stand (Esports Arena, South 6) over the three days with the semi-finals and finals taking place at 12pm respectively on each day.

Ubisoft kicked off its E3 festivities with a brand new trailer for Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands, and unveiled the pre-order details on Xbox One, PlayStation 4  and Windows PC.

GRW_KEYART_FINAL_LOGO_OK_AdobeRGB

Developed by Ubisoft Paris, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands is the first military shooter set in a massive and responsive open-world, entirely playable in single-player or up to four-player co-op. Players will discover Bolivia a few years from now, a country transformed by the vicious Santa Blanca drug cartel into a narco-state.

Sent behind enemy lines, the Ghosts will have to cripple the Santa Blanca cartel’s operation, breaking alliances between the drug lords and the corrupt government, and saving the Bolivian population from the cruelty of El Sueño, Santa Blanca’s ruthless leader. To do so, players will have total freedom of choice to complete missions how they choose and watch as the world reacts to their actions.

“As part of the Tom Clancy franchise, authenticity is one of the key pillars which will bring the Wildlands to life in our latest instalment in the franchise,” said Eric Couzian, Creative Director on Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands. “Our goal has been to build the Ghosts as credible Spec Ops, so players have a range of options in facing not only the deadly cartels, but also the roughness of the multifaceted Bolivian landscape. Ghosts are survivors and hunters, they can blend in all sorts of environments, leaving no trace except in the heads of their terrified enemies. We want players to feel this power.”

Furthermore, Ubisoft has also announced that the following premium editions are available for pre-order now, in addition to the standard game:

GRW_DELUXE_LOC_UK

  • The Deluxe Edition, available at GAME, contains the Standard Edition and the digital Deluxe Pack, which includes: the Huntsman rifle and motorbike, 3 emblems, 3 weapon camos, 3 character customisation items, and an XP booster. GRW_GOLD_LOC_UK

  • The Gold Edition, available at Amazon, includes the Season Pass, giving players access to two major expansions, as well as exclusive digital content such as equipment packs, an exclusive vehicle, epic weapons, and the digital Deluxe Pack.

GRW_mockup_COLLECTOR_EDITION_UK

  • The Calavera Collector’s Case, exclusive to the Uplay Shop, includes all the equipment needed to operate as a Ghost deep inside the Bolivian wildlands to take down the vicious Santa Blanca cartel. This includes the Gold Edition alongside the Ghost’s Audio Headset replica, a fully functional headset for PlayStation 4, Xbox One* and PC. Last but not least, the Collector’s Case also contains a Santa Blanca Cartel Skull, an in-game map of Bolivia, the original soundtrack of the game, a Bolivian carrying pouch, and 3 postcards of Bolivia.

Additionally, fans who pre-order the game will also receive “The Peruvian Connection”, a bonus mission in which they will embark on a perilous journey through the high mountains of Bolivia to break the alliance between the Santa Blanca and the Peruvian Cartels.
