Review: The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit

The original Life is Strange series hit me like a tonne of bricks emotionally and as a gamer fond of the player choice style of Telltale games. Coming from DONTNOD Entertainment it delivered a thought provoking game experience like no other in the use of combining a reach musical soundtrack with powerful story telling. However Before the Storm, the prequel to the original story was underwhelming for the most part and strangely, not created by the original DONTNOD team but now we know what they were working on instead, the true sequel to Life is Strange. Delivered as a nice surprise during E3 2018 comes ‘The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit’, a completely free prequel episode experience to Life is Strange 2 and boy, was I immediately transported back to the Life is Strange universe.

This story is set three years following the events of the original Life is Strange game and introduces as to Chris, a typical ten year old kid with a fondness for Superheroes as we find him alone in this room on a Saturday morning putting together the design for his very own Superhero persona Captain Spirit. Some player choice comes into play straight away as you help Chris decide what kind of costume he draws which is pretty much the classic go Batman or go Superman tough decision for any would be superhero wannabe. Scattered around his bedroom are various toys and posters and quickly giving the sense that this is just a kid with a superb imagination and passion for drawing but soon picking up hints that not everything is going great in this household. But I instantly connected with Chris as someone who grew up doing the very same thing in drawing my own superhero world, and just like in the original games, music is used to provide moments of solitude for Chris that brings you the player into his world in such a pure and immersive way.

Soon it is very evident that there is darkness next to Chris’s world of superheros and that real life is not all sunshine and rainbows. After answering his Dad’s call to come to breakfast it becomes quickly evident that he dad has already starting drinking beer that early in the day as he takes a swig from his can only to put it down next to two empty cans on the counter. After a fun exchange where the player is given the chance to try and lie about how terrible his dad’s cooking is, we learn that Chris has bruises on his left arm, which he dad sheepishly attempts to offer help to Chris with whilst at the same time making sure to ask if anyone outside of the house had noticed the bruising. Just from this exchange it is easy to take that Chris’s dad had caused the bruising and also has a drinking problem. This dark tone combined with the reality that Chris has also lost his mum gives so much to why Chris spends so much time in his imagination and not just because he is a ten year old kid.

It does have to be said that this is strictly a demo of sorts and that there are no trophies or achievements to gain by playing through it. But as a preview of what to possibly expect in the main Life is Strange 2 game, it serves as a superb way of returning to this world with familiar gameplay styles and techniques. As we explore the world of Captain Spirit via Chris we learn so much about him in that he is clearly grieving for the loss of his mum and all the subsequent events following her passing such as his dad’s drinking problem amongst other things. By exploring the house you can discover clues such as letters which explain what has happened and the reality of his Dad’s situation which in no way excuses his treatment and possible abuse to Chris but some sympathy as the bigger truth of their situation becomes clearer, but I do not want to spoil it but will say explore and look at everything you can during this game to experience it all. It is all in very true Life is Strange style of the original game and plays so well that I straight way wished that 2 was already available to play.

This is a very short experience but it is cleverly timed out so that the main point of this mini episodes story has a strict timeline to follow, one that allows Chris and the player to head out and do things but the episode can be finished in just an hour but takes just over two hours to complete everything that you can. Even in just this short episode I have to be honest and say I did share a tear at the sad moments Chris experience because it resonated so much with me as someone who grew up without my parents and though older than Chris as that time, I did escape to the world of comic books and superheroes to deal with my loss. The power in the writing gives me such hope and expectancy for the sequel even without knowing anything about the sequel or even if Chris is the main character for the full game at this point.

I really do hope that Chris is the focus of the sequel, getting to know him as a kid and experiencing just this slice of his life has hooked me completely and though I did not know what to expect from this mini episode, it is clear that the power behind the original Life is Strange that made it an award winning and stand out game has returned even for this snippet preview which bodes very well going forward. This truly felt like Episode One instead of a demo and it was genius to make it free for everyone and transported me fully into the world of Life is Strange far more than the complete Before the Storm series.

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit were indeed awesome and with a fantastic ending that completely left me wanting more. The visuals and choice in musical soundtrack are simply striking with some outstanding voice acting performances that you can see a lot of care and time was taking in putting this preview together. It just ticks every box of the things I loved about the first game but by introducing us to a new character away from Chloe and Max it has a new fresh feeling to it all despite using so many familiar gameplay mechanics. The nods and references to the original game ties everything together and you do feel that this is now a universe with many potential stories to be told and characters to introduce.

I would like and need to see what happens to Chris and his dad and if they are not the stars of the full game I will feel a little cheated at this point but until we know what the full sequel is about, getting to know Chris and his alter ego Captain Spirit was a real joy and heartfelt surprise story to experience.

Life is Strange 2 is set to release September 27th 2018 and is available to pre-order on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC right now.

The Iceworks 7000 power bank, offers a truly portable solution. At just 8mm thick, 15.5cm length and 7.8cm width, the thinnest currently on the market, it can easily be slipped into a pocket, purse or wallet so is readily available to charge compatible devices whether at work, on the move or whilst travelling.

Keeping our customers connected also means moving with the times and after noticing that most new generation phones are moving towards USB Type-C input, we wanted to create a compatible device that can power the latest technologies. That’s why we developed the Type-C model. It’s fast and provides a larger battery charge than our other models, but still retains its ultra slim design and inbuilt cable which makes it so portable.”

Review: Space Hulk Deathwing Enhanced Edition

Originally released on PC it has been a year long wait for Spacehulk Deathwing to come to console and this would make my first time experiencing the Spacehulk universe first hand so I was not sure what to expect. In the year since its PC release, time been spent improving this PC shooter with various tweaks to gameplay making this Enhanced Edition a great first look at the franchise for me. I was not sure what to expect going in and as a FPS fan was very much intrigued by the universe I have seen over the years. It was time to strap on my insanely over sized battle suit and to see what this game had to offer.

Sadly it was not very long before alarm bells started to go off for me as the loading times just to get into the tutorial were rather foreboding of things to come. The tutorial itself does help in explain how things work especially in the movement and combat areas but the clumsy controls felt like more work needed to be done bringing the keyboard and mouse PC style over to controller just a little more. I need however feel the power of wearing the battle armour and the ability to hack doors and gun turrets felt pretty cool. Visually it does look great but compared with more recent shooters and it certainly feels behind in terms of quality which is then helped by the fact most areas in the game that you explore are pretty dark to help hide some of the visual issues like low texture quality at times.

The space armour you wear forces the style in which you play as well in that its so big and cumbersome that trying to play evasively in a fight is simply not an option so you are pretty much a bullet sponge throughout. You do constantly feel the weight of the suit as well as moving around is slow and sluggish which helps in making you feel super powerful once the fighting starts but if the level design has you needed to explore a long area that navigation becomes a real chore and a rather boring one at that. There is a real 50/50 appreciation of the armour which failed to appeal to me but that could just be down to being used to have more speed and freedom in my movement in FPS games.

The combat itself suffers from the same 50/50 issue in that at its heart, this is a squad game and to help you are two AI controlled squad members whose skills and abilities try to compliment your own. This comes in handy as enemies tend to attack in groups with gameplay that did remind me a lot of Left 4 Dead at times. The main issue is that the AI controlling your partner really kind of sucks at times. You can instruct or command them to open doors but otherwise for the most park they just clank behind you aimlessly until either a fight breaks out or you give them a task to do but they do come in handy when fighting because attempting to tackle the fighting solo is dangerous. If you can grab a couple of friends to join you instead then this game does take on a new level but playing on your own and relying on the AI partners is a pain at times.

This enhanced version just add a new mode in Special Missions which does add some variety and extra gameplay and you can see if you compare it with the original PC game what the developers have been focused on updating in the year before this release. The problem is that in that time other FPS titles have come out that just feel more fluid to play. Now I will admit that not knowing the universe has probably lessened the experience and I do not feel this game did or does enough to grab me fully into the lore enough. But if you do know the lore and universe then this game will offer far more over the gameplay and there is enough fan service in the language and missions to appeal to fans of the series. Sadly for me it just felt way too clumsy and clunky and never tried to pull me into the world well enough to make me want more of it.

Spacehulk Deathwing Enhanced Edition is really designed for fans of the series to jump in straight away and feel they are a part of that universe. Going in pretty much blind to it all didn’t help and this is definitely a game designed for and aims to be for fans. As a shooter it has too many negatives for me and it never really had a natural fit compared to other shooters but there is enough there if you like squad based shooters and can call on a couple of friends to join you.

It is evident that the devs put extra time in adding new things for this console release but some things have been overlooked that really needed to be focused on before this release such as loading times and partner AI and overall it ends up being an average experience that fails to do enough to welcome new players to it or the universe.

Review: Jurassic World Evolution

As a gamer who is fond of a variety of video game genres as well as pretty much being an all round nerd for films, it is always a very lovely surprise to see those very things combine in one video game that not only ticks all those boxes but genuinely contains some very nice surprises. With the hype building for the next big screen instalment of the Jurassic Park film series with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom hitting cinema screens, a new game has set its sights on delivering the very original concept of Jurassic Park, creating your own dinosaur theme park with Jurassic World Evolution.

The moment the iconic theme music plays I was immediately transported into the world of Jurassic Park. Evolution provides the opportunity to build and run your very own Jurassic Park but what came as such a surprise to me was the incredible depth and focus on the science behind building a dinosaur theme park just as much as the management needed to make the park a success. The presentation is the first thing that grabs you as real effort has gone into making this a tremendous addition to the wider franchise by using as many references to both the original films as well as the more recent ones. Starting off by having the great Jeff Goldblum himself voicing his own character Ian Malcom in the game, it was areal fanboy moment to not only having him warn me of the dangers of messing with nature to bring dinosaurs to life but also in just the interaction you have with him throughout the game.

Now it must be said that either he was the only actor from the films willing to bring his voice to the game or perhaps all the developer team could afford as the moment you are enjoying Ian Malcom speaking you will then meet the game’s version of the more recent main characters of Owen and Claire from Jurassic World and it is a little disappointing to hear different voices after the nostalgia boost from Ian Malcolm though thankfully the inclusion of Owen and Claire are simply to remind you of the newer films and characters and just having Goldblum, the theme music and the dinosaurs themselves are more than enough nostalgia factors to give the game the fan service it needs.

Building your park takes far more work than you would think and it is for me the strength that makes this game a real joy to play as the science behind bringing dinosaurs to life is just as important as making the guests happy. Before you can create a dinosaur you must first discover, research and complete a stable and viable genome structure for the species. To do this you must build two important buildings starting with the Expedition centre from which you can send out teams to fossil dig sites around the world to collect fossils and then the Fossil Centre which is used to extract the dino DNA depending on the type of dinosaur fossil you have found. Luckily to make things easier the dig sites will identify which species of dinosaur can be retrieved so you can focus on a particular type. You will need to create the minimum of 50% viability in order to attempt to create a dinosaur with the higher viability giving better chances of success as it is possible to have a failed attempt meaning you will need to start over so spending time and money to continue to collect fossils to extract DNA to strengthen their genome.

It is very important to understand the needs of each dinosaur species as well before placing them in the park such as what kind of environment they prefer, food and water requirements as well as their social aspects. For example some of the herbivores will prefer wide open spaces and trees and a small social group of their own species but will not be too happy in smaller spaces or being near too many other dinosaurs. It is vital to understand these requirements when you begin to plan the holding area for them in the park not to mention the strength of the fences needed to make sure they stay put as unhappy dinosaurs tend to try and break out and some of the more aggressive and intelligent carnivore species such as the Velociraptors will go right for your guests.

To maintain the dinosaurs you have Rangers and the ACU centres to help you maintain them and the park. Rangers can be used to repair buildings, fences and to resupply feeders and the ACU helicopter unit can tranquilise escaped dinosaurs and transport them back to their enclosure or to sell dinosaurs should you need the extra cash which you will because both building and running a park is rather expensive which is why I recommend being patient when starting out as it is very easy to spend all your money just researching or creating dinosaurs before the park is capable of sustaining itself. Understanding the requirements for both the science and the business side of having a park will help you be successful and is a factor of the game I really appreciate as it focuses on the micro management of so many things and all of which are satisfying gameplay mechanics.

Now in total there are five islands or parks that the game will ask you to build or save through its campaign. To unlock the next island and park you have to make the current one a success through making money and keeping guests happy and by completing critical missions given by the three Sections of the park consisting of Science, Entertainment and Security. These range from collecting a particular fossil and completing a species genome to making a certain amount of profit per hour and number of guests in the park. The only missions I had an issue with were from the Security section which at times made the request that I put two types of dinosaurs to fight against each other so they could monitor the results. This is the darker side of the game and one which I never really enjoyed but understood that just like in the films, this is a part of the Jurassic Park lore to an extent. That said getting access to another island is achievable without completing all the main story missions but for completionists this will be an aspect to consider.

Once you have the option to move to the next island you will give given the choice to go there immediately or to remain to finish things off or to improve that park. What did come as a lovely surprise is how every park is connected in that even after you have moved on, that park remains open. This comes most into play when it comes to researching new upgrades for the park and dinosaur DNA as it requires multiple Research centres at each park for example, in order to unlock the more advanced upgrades which means the more parks you have open, the more you can upgrade the parks with options for both the science and the guest sides. A nice tip is that when you do open the next island park; make sure you go back to a previous island which may have more spendable money as you can still do the research at the previous islands that will then become available to all the parks.

Each new island will offer new challenges such as tropical storms that can damage buildings and more advanced requirements such as guest needs and the missions each section will request you complete. I can spend hours just managing a single park until it gets that five star rating before moving on but then to find myself returning to an earlier park to make improvements to them even though I have already moved on. There is a real thrill to creating a dinosaur and watching the cut-scene as they are released and also some sadness when one of your original dinosaurs dies of old age. The panic when a carnivore dinosaur breaks free and you rush to get the emergency shelters open to protect the guests as you send an ACU in to tranq the dinosaur only to then have the guilt when it gobbles up a couple of guests. So many things have to managed and events that have to be prepared for that this feels like a genuine job to do and that is perfectly fine with me.

Having played and really enjoyed Aven Colony, another building game which had a control system that worked superbly well with the controller and I can say that and no pun intended, but Jurassic World Evolution evolves that to the next level with a user interface so slick and responsive that moving around the park is really fluid not to mention the genius short cuts with the controller bumpers servers as quick access to the Rangers and ACU teams which believe me you will celebrate the first time a dino breaks a fence and makes a run for it. The really impressive thing is the engine that delivers amazing visuals with lovely construction animations for all the building and dinosaur movement animations and unlike other similar games such as Aven Colony; I never suffered slow down when after working on a park for over four straight hours. Even the biggest parks I had with dozens of dinosaurs in there and thousands of guests with monorails running throughout the park never suffered stuttering or slow down at all. It is an impressive game throughout and with a clever save system means you can spend as much or as little time you can playing making this a real gem to drop in and out of.

Jurassic World Evolution is the best franchise experience yet in a video game and it delivers everything you would want from it. Whilst some may find the micro-management side a little OTT perhaps which could slow down the “PUT ALL THE DINOSAURS IN THERE” temptation, for me it delivers a sensible and well thought out game experience for this genre not seen in other games especially on console. This is perhaps a tough experience for the younger fan but it is a fully enjoyable building game that highlights everything you would want as a fan of the Jurassic Park franchise.

The very moment you release your first T-Rex and to hear it roar to let every other dinosaur and human in the park that it is still the king of the dinosaurs in everyway is a real goosebump moment, and one of many this game can provide as the more time you invest to it the more epic the whole experience becomes. Not just a must have for fans of the films but a must have for any fan of building and management games.

Review: Far Cry 5 – Hours of Darkness DLC

I full enjoyed my time with the Far Cry 5 campaign and world that picking up the Season Pass was simply a no brainer for me. I have already been rewarded with the Far Cry 3 Remastered edition for free with the Pass and now I was looking forward to the first of three actual DLC packs for the game with Hours of Darkness which takes the action back in time to the Vietnam Conflict.

The DLC will put you in the role of Wendell ‘Red’ Redler, who many will recognise as a character you meet during the main campaign of Far Cry 5 who is always talking about his time in the Vietnam conflict and Hours of Darkness puts you back into one of his many stories for this DLC. The action begins Wendell in a helicopter gunship with his squad patrolling near the end of the conflict when their chopper is shot down and Wendell and his surviving team are captured. A surprise air strike provides an opportunity to escape and players will find themselves now lost in enemy territory trying to find a way out.

The first task you have once you have escaped is to return to your helicopter’s crash site in order to retrieve your gear. It also allows you to make contact with your own HQ who provide you with the location of an extraction zone that you must work to get to so you can escape. The extraction really is the main goal of the DLC and the small region it is set in will put many obstacles in your way as you explore and navigate around the jungle environment. Which by the way is visually fun to be in especially at night as the trees and high grass areas make it possible to really focus on a more stealthy approach which is a nod back to the original Far Cry games especially when you can activate perks with every stealth kill which will allow you to track enemies through walls and approach more quietly but will lose all perks if you break stealth or are discovered by enemies.

Now it does have to be said that you can quite literally complete this DLC in one hour if you simply head straight to the extraction point and get out but just because you can does not mean you should. The DLC provides bonus objectives to accomplish on route to the extraction from disabling AA gun nests, assassinating Vietcong Commanders to gain intel whilst weakening the enemy and also freeing captured POWs. Some of these POWs will actually be some of the surviving members of your squad and once releasing can then accompany you as your companion just like in the main campaign you can equip partners to help you fight. These objectives are dotted around the map and can be discovered simply by the natural exploration of the map. By collecting or completing all these challenges you will upon completion of the DLC unlock two new modes including a survival one with a perma death style to replay the DLC with adding some replayability to it.

But this is pretty much the same gameplay as the main campaign with just less to do in terms of fighting and it only took me just under three hours to 100% the challenges and complete the add on campaign. But as the first DLC content of the Season Pass it does the job nicely for me. I loved the more focus placed on being stealthy though you can go full guns blazing if you choose to. The design of the region is amazing especially when you uncover the secret tunnels that enemy Commanders will try to both hide and escape though. It does capture the tone and sense of the Vietnam conflict in this little slice and it is a very different tone from the main game campaign though keeping it far more serious then I expect the next two DLC content drops will have as settings. The unlocked modes for finishing all the challenges does give this more replayability than your first play through and you can play it fully co-op with a friend as well but it is still at best an up to three hour campaign.

Hours of Darkness is clever in putting the player in the shoes of another character of the main campaign which then enhances that story even more such as instead of seeing Wendell as an old man telling war stories you have now with this DLC, lived through one of those stories. Though there is not a lot to it with it being so short, it is the first part of three content drops with the season pass and one that already gives you the Far Cry 3 Remastered game as well so that for me at least gives it a pass for being that short.

It was also refreshing to get to a play stealth style throughout and was a great reason to revisit the world of Far Cry 5 whilst building excitement and hope for the next drops from the Pass in the months to come.

Review: OnePlus 6 is this the best Oneplus yet?

The OnePlus 6 competes with smartphones that often cost twice as much. Surprisingly, the OnePlus often performs even better.

This review is for the 8GB Ram and 128GB storage OnePlus 6.

Front of the OnePus 6 with the notch

You saw that with the fingerprint scanner (OnePlus 2), metal housing (OnePlus 3), double camera ( OnePlus 5 ) and now the notch. Yes, the black bar where the iPhone X was initially ridiculed is now the must-have feature of phones in the year 2018, and that’s not so crazy at all.

Notch

The notch ensures that the front can almost entirely consist of a touchscreen. The black bar – which is hidden in the front camera, among other things – gets used up quickly enough and the 6.3 inch AMOLED screen (that’s big!) Looks great.

The screen is also energy-efficient: it uses a full-HD resolution, the perfect combination of quality and energy saving. Many smartphone screens have much higher resolutions, but for the naked eye that hardly matters – but for your battery life the more.

The housing has also gone on the shovel. Instead of a metal housing, OnePlus uses a glass housing this time. That has two disadvantages. First of all, glass attracts greasy fingerprints very quickly, so you regularly have to brush your smartphone. Secondly, glass is smooth, and you have the idea that the OnePlus 6 will slide out of your hand very quickly. One of the most important advantages of a glass housing is the possibility to charge a smartphone wirelessly. But sadly, that does not support the OnePlus 6.

Three very fine features of the previous OnePlus phones are retained: the very fast fingerprint scanner at the back, an input for your wired headphones at the bottom and a notification button on the side (photo below).

This button is handy: you can switch between all notifications, only important notifications or completely silent.

OnePlus 6 specs

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor
  • Adreno 630 GPU
  • 6GB/8GB LPDDR4X RAM
  • 64GB/128GB/256GB of UFS 2.1 storage
  • 6.28-inch Full Optic Full HD+ display, Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection, sRGB and DCI-P3 colour gamut
  • 16-megapixel front camera with f/1.7 aperture, 1/2.6″, 1.22µm pixel size, gyro-EIS, OIS, 20-megapixel secondary camera with f/1.7 lens, 1/2.8″, 1.0µm pixel size
  • 16-megapixel front camera with AI
  • Dual SIM
  • 3G, LTE Cat. 16/13 4CA
  • Wi-Fi,4×4 MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC
  • GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS
  • USB Type-C, Fingerprint sensor, Face unlock
  • 3300mAh battery, Dash Charge
  • Android 8.1 Oreo with OxygenOS 5.1

Oreo

The Oneplus 6 is equipped with a fast Snapdragon 845 chip, 6 GB of memory and 64 GB of storage space for £469. The more expensive version of £519 has 8GB of storage and 128GB of storage. For another £50 you get 265GB of storage if you’re planning to store a lot of photos and videos on your device.

OnePlus 6 Pricing

The powerful hardware makes Android feel nice and smooth, and the bare version of Google’s operating system impresses again.

OnePlus uses OxygenOS, a modified version of Android where it almost seems like you run the software of Googles own smartphone Pixel. The big advantage of OxygenOS is that you can adjust almost everything: from the button layout to the way you perform fast actions from the notification screen. Android is already easy to modify, and OnePlus makes it even easier. And if you can not find the notch? You can just ‘turn it off’ by blackening the image to the left and right of it.

The Android version of OxygenOS is at the time of writing Android 8.1 Oreo and an update to the new Android P is on the schedule. The OnePlus 6 is even one of the few phones on which you can test an early version of Android P. The question is how long OnePlus will keep updating this phone: the OnePlus 3T (end of 2016) will no longer be updated to Android P, and then you’ll be stuck with an outdated device after less than two years.

Dash

The energy-efficient screen is reflected in the battery life: you can easily do a day with the OnePlus 6. The battery (3300 mAh) provides enough energy to a day to Facebook, Twitter and Youtube, without having to worry about or you do have an external charger.

In addition, the OnePlus 6 comes with a Dash charger that allows you to charge the phone for more than half within thirty minutes. Even ten minutes on the charger already makes a big difference. You’ll have to use their proprietary charger and cable to enjoy this though.

In the box next to the Dash charger there is also a transparent plastic cover that protects the OnePlus 6 from falling. The case is not really beautiful, but much needed for many people. OnePlus does not deliver earphones to the phone: you have to buy one yourself.

Camera
The camera has been the Achilles heel of the OnePlus phones for years. This year there is finally a change: the camera system (two pieces of 20 and 16 megapixels) is in order. Nothing more nothing less. The difference in quality with the Huawei P20 and Google Pixel 2 remains clearly present, but the quality of the photos has indeed increased since the OnePlus 5.

Samples

Two times zoom

You can even see the raindrops in the flower

The photos you shoot with the OnePlus 6 are good, especially if there is enough light available. Images have more detail and are inherently sharper, even in low light. There are a few issues here though: images tend to get overblown highlights, especially in challenging light. There’s a bit more oversharpening in the photos than I would have liked.

But even photos were taken with less light still look reasonable. Even with the portrait mode, where the background is blurred and the same effect as with SLR cameras is created, you shoot great photos – although the competition is just that better.

The OnePlus 6 offers everything you would expect from a high-end smartphone, but for half the price. Those few points of criticism, such as the lack of wireless charging, a waterproof housing or stereo speakers, actually do not represent anything that this smartphone offers for this price.

With a starting price tag of £469, OnePlus is again the king of the price-quality ratio.

Pros

  • Fast Updates
  • Battery Life
  • Value for Money
  • Speed

Cons

  • No Wireless Charging
  • Needs faster shutter speed for movement shots
