Withings Returns With Steel HR Sport

0

After reacquiring itself from Nokia on May 31, 2018, Withings is back with a new look, a strengthened focus on connected health and the first new product under its original brand.

Today, it unveiled Steel HR Sport, a multi-sport hybrid smartwatch that offers heart rate monitoring, connected GPS tracking and Fitness Level analytics – an estimation of VO2 max. The device that boasts an unprecedented 25-day battery life joins the product portfolio of connected health devices that encompass activity trackers, blood pressure monitors, smart scales, thermometers and sleep tracking devices.

With the launch of Steel HR Sport marks a new chapter in the Withings story, which has seen its original co-founder, Eric Carreel, buy back the business he sold to Nokia Technologies in 2016. Four months after officially reacquiring Withings, the brand is back with a new logo and product.

“With its advanced sport and health tracking capabilities, Steel HR Sport is a perfect example of how Withings is delivering against its original mission to help better manage health,” said Eric Carreel, CEO of Withings. “The public reaction to the return of Withings is extraordinary and renews my belief that elegantly designed devices with health tracking abilities can dramatically improve individual and society’s health.”

Steel HR Sport – Designed For Life

With the groundbreaking launch of Activité back in 2014, the first analogue watch with activity tracking features, Withings paved the way for all hybrid smartwatches to come. Steel HR Sport continues this tradition with a premium design blended with smart health and sport features for analytics.

Its elegant design features 316L stainless steel and a 40mm case that is water resistant up to 50M (5ATM). Available in both white and black face variants, it is equally eye-catching in sporting or social settings.

The analogue face of Steel HR shows the time as well as a sub-dial that shows the percentage of daily activity goals achieved. Goals are set and managed within the Health Mate app. The device’s discrete OLED display shows important health and sports data such as daily steps, calories, distance and heart rate and can be navigated with a push of a button. The display also shows smartphone notifications, which appear automatically along with a discreet vibration.

Workout ready: Multi-sport, connected GPS & Fitness Level

Steel HR Sport offers dedicated multisport tracking for over 30 different activities from yoga, volleyball and rowing to boxing, skiing and ice hockey. Users select the chosen activity on the watch display to start their workout session. During workout sessions, Steel HR Sport continuously tracks and displays heart rate and the duration of the workout directly on the watch screen. After the session, users can understand the intensity of their workout with heart rate zones and calories spent based on the specific activity selected.

Steel HR Sport is the first product within the Steel HR range to feature GPS connectivity. Once paired with a smartphone, users can track their pace, distance, elevation and map their workouts while walking, running or cycling. Pace, distance and continuous heart rate are displayed on the watch face screen and can be tracked live on the user’s phone. After a session, the user’s workout route can also be viewed in the Health Mate app.

The device is the first Withings product to offer Fitness Level assessments of its user. The fitness indicator, called VO2 max, measures the heart and muscles ability to convert oxygen into energy during physical exercise.

The fitter the individual, the higher the VO2 max. Following running sessions, Steel HR Sport calculates the user’s personal Fitness Level using pace, heart rate and morphological data (age, weight, gender). This fitness metric will help users to optimise their training, increase performance and achieve long-term fitness objectives.

Day and night companion

With an battery life of 25 days that can be extended for a further 20 days in a power reserve mode, Steel HR Sport is able to track fitness, activity and sleep patterns around the clock.

The device’s tracking ability is not limited to the waking hours. Steel HR Sport is a sophisticated sleep tracker, detecting length and quality of sleep and providing an overall Sleep Score in the Health Mate app that is based on sleep duration, depth regularity and interruptions. Steel HR Sport has capabilities such as Smart Wake-upTM that will wake users with vibration alarms at the most optimal times during their sleep cycle. The app even offers a Sleep Smarter Program, consisting of eight weeks of recommendations to improve sleep patterns.

During waking hours, Steel HR Sport helps users keep on top of their daily communications. Both Steel HR Sport as well the existing Steel HR product will benefit from enhanced notification capabilities, allowing a multitude of app notifications to be displayed on the digital screen. Previously limited to calls, text messages and events, the Steel HR line is now compatible with notifications from over 100 apps. Whether it’s flight alerts, breaking news or messages from friends and family on social channels, notifications appear on the watch with a content preview.

Availability

Priced £189.95, Steel HR Sport is available starting September 18, 2018, from www.withings.com, Amazon and selected retailers. It is available in both a white and black face variant with each coming with a grey silicone band. Additional exchangeable wristbands can be purchased exclusively on withings.com.

Steel HR Sport connects with the free Health Mate app, available both on Android and iOS. Health Mate also connects with a range of third party apps such as Apple Health, Google Fit, or MyFitnessPal.

Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle Brings Side-Scrolling Classics Home this month

0

Capcom today announced Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle, a new collection featuring seven games that pay tribute to the classic era of arcade side-scrolling co-op games. Releasing September 18, 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Steam for €19.99 / £15.99, Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle features seven of these classic beat ‘em ups, including two never before ported titles, in one essential collection.

Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle includes Final Fight (1989), The King of Dragons (1991), Captain Commando (1991), Knights of the Round (1991) and Warriors of Fate (1992), which gamers may remember from arcades or previous console releases. Armored Warriors (1994) and Battle Circuit (1997) have previously only been available in arcades, rounding out the collection providing an opportunity for gamers that may have missed out on that era a chance to play these retro gems at home. All of these titles exemplify some of the best side-scrolling games of the arcade era, and introduced players to iconic Capcom characters such as Captain Commando, plus Cody, Guy and Mike Haggar from Final Fight.

Playing co-operatively with friends was a huge draw for the arcade beat ‘em up genre, and Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle preserves that popular feature. All seven games in the collection will support drop-in local and online multiplayer co-op play. In addition, a variety of customisable options are available to tailor gameplay such as number of lives, continues and difficulty.

In between battles, players can also dive deeper into each game with comprehensive galleries. A time warp of each game’s history includes stunning art, design sketches, development documents, archives of the original game sleeves and instruction cards, as well as special artwork that was only available to fan-club members at the time.

Review: MARVEL’s Spider-Man

The moment Sony announced that an exclusive modern take on Spider-Man was coming to PS4 in 2018 I was already excited and a little nervous for it. With the Arkham series for now at least, finished there have been little comic book games other than the Injustice series who have stepped up to deliver that super-hero experience. But when you have Insomniac Games developing your Spider-Man title the hope and expectations were huge. Happily, and without hesitation I can say that MARVEL’s Spider-Man not only learned valuable lessons from the work of Rocksteady Studios the with Arkham series, but they have delivered for me the close to perfect video game for our friendly neighbourhood wall crawler.

What Insomniac Games has managed to pull off with this game is quite simply outstanding from the gameplay to the story and just every little detail that were clearly and painstakingly worked on to deliver the ultimate Spider-Man experience. It should also be pointed out that this is very much Insomniac’s take on the Spider-Verse and the many characters and villains that Spidey has to interact with. What I really appreciated most was how this is a Spider-Man who has been a superhero for years, he is experienced in what he does and instead of being bogged down by attempting to retell the origin story which every single MARVEL comic book fan knows, we leap right into the action as we see Peter Parker awoken by a police alert on his phone about the raid about to happen to take down The Kingpin Wilson Fisk. By starting out with a quick look at Peter Parker’s normal start is just a great way to introduce players very quickly to his world, as he grabs some toast, picks up his mask that he has been tinkering with right before he puts on the classic Spider-Man suit we all know just as he leaps from his apartment window and starts to web sling towards the Fisk Tower to join the Police raid.

The moment the game so smoothly transitions from the opening cutscene into actual gameplay is just sublime and to have the player take control just as Spidey begins to web sling was just genius as it is perhaps the most iconic thing players are looking to do in the game. What is so impressive about the web slinging is just how immersive it alone is in the game as you fluidly web sling through buildings and famous landmarks in New York and it just instantly makes you feel about as Spider-Man as you can at that point. The sheer feeling of momentum is the real magic behind the web slinging with such speed and you swoop through buildings helped along by fabulous sound effects and music such as the noise of the traffic if you swing low enough to just the musical score when you are swinging above the rooftops and skyscrapers.

In fact, the whole opening thirty minutes of prologue action is perhaps one of the finest tutorial sections to any game in recent years as its so beautiful woven into the story itself that it almost does not feel like a tutorial as all the fundamentals and basics to the gameplay from the combat, to traversing as Spidey to how QTE moments. Throughout the fighting and especially when taking down Fisk down you get a really great insight into Peter Parker and the writing for his dialogue has nailed his witty comebacks and humour throughout the rest of the game. It is such a superb and fun opening to the game that sets the scene for everything else to come.

One of the biggest surprises I felt came in the form of just how much freedom players have right from the very start in terms of just going off and doing your own thing at your own pace. Main story missions are highlighted on the map and on-screen hub but at no time is the player pressured into racing to start it. Instead the whole of New York is open for the player to explore and the city feels like a city as it is a huge playground to be in. The city itself is broken up into different sections and all have their own side objectives to complete throughout the entire story campaign and the side objectives are so well designed as well. Right away after completing the prologue I spent the next six hours completing all the available side objectives such as collecting all Peter’s backpacks that dotted all over New York and helping to stop crimes in progress from muggings and kidnappings to armed robberies. The abundance of side things to do is a great way to learn and discover the city but such attention has been put into the design of the city that it very much the MARVEL’s New York City as you will discover as you complete the landmark photographs activities and start noticing some rather famous MARVEL universe locations within the game. Just as with the story I am choosing not to spoil as little as possible but trust that looking at every item in the backpacks you find and the locations you are asked to photograph will literally blow your mind as a MARVEL Comics fan.

Along with the web-slinging, Spidey’s other powers really come into play so brilliantly with the combat which before I finally got my hands-on release day, was something I was a little uncertain about. The best way to really describe it would be his powers are very much a big and natural part of his combat which is then enhanced further by the web-gadgets which are unlocked and upgraded during campaign progress. We are talking web trip mines which will instantly stick an enemy to a wall or other enemy to impact webbing that can stick an enemy to a wall and web bombs which will web up all enemies in range. The ability to use Spider sense as well to dodge attacks and gunfire just becomes so instinctive and is animated so well that everything you do in combat when being attacked by multiple enemies is thrilling. Combining his web gadgets with his powers never becomes repetitive and though you upgrade gadgets more through out the campaign, no fight will feel too easy as enemies become stronger and tougher as well.

The sheer amount of content in the game in and around the main story itself is quite frankly staggering and it is a testament to Insomniac Games that their base game has so much for players to enjoy and sink their teeth into from the main story to side objectives to the collectibles and even the secret stuff. Everything you do is about having the best superhero and Spider-man gaming experience you can have. Even the trophies are designed to reward you for just playing the game and where other games would force players to get perfect scores in challenges which can be infuriating and progression halting but it is very possible to earn the Platinum trophy by the time you finish the main story if you take the time to do everything available as you go along. Now this does not mean trophies are just handed to you and you will have to put some real effort into get them but the sensation that this game just wants you to have the best time you have is why is works so incredibly well.

Just knowing that the plan is to release three more pieces of story content in the form of ‘The City That Never Sleeps’ expansion pass has riles some people but having put over thirty hours into this game already and still finding more secrets to uncover and things to do the base game post platinum trophy and 100% the game has ben returning to it just for fun means any extra content especially content that is being reduced over the next few months is all completely worth it in my eyes and is something look forward too with new missions, costumes and no doubt more secrets to find. Speaking of costumes other than the three pre-order costumes, all others in the game are unlocked via gameplay which is a rare and very old school way of rewarding players for playing the game as well as the serious fan choices in costumes to wear depending on which you prefer. Personally, I love the new look suit with the white Spider but you can have an abundance of choice from costumes taken from the comics to the full range of the current MCU Spider-Man costumes with the Iron Spider from Avengers: Infinity War as well as the Spider-Man: Home Coming suit and even his homemade one from the same film. I cannot stress enough just how satisfying everything about this game is from the point of being a gamer, a MARVEL Comic book and as a Spider-Man nerd.

Now I do feel that there is a need to get the elephant in the room out the way which are the comparisons to the above mentioned Arkham series. Quite frankly for me the Arkham series is the benchmark for all action adventure-based video games based on a comic book character and as it is the benchmark it will be natural to not only compare all other games to the series but also to see its own systems and gameplay inspire similar ones in other games, hell even the Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor/War games based their combat systems on the successful one in Arkham,  so when comparing Spider-Man to Arkham, it is not an injustice nor an insult to do so or to comment when indeed MARVEL’s Spider-Man manages to improve on what may feel like a familiar gameplay style or system. But the way in which Insomniac Games has made this their own version of Spider-Man is a credit to their hard work and passion because knowing the Spidey-verse as well as I do, I not only applaud them for what they did so far but knowing what they have planned to come as well as the potential going forward makes so very much excited to see what they can do next and they should be allowed to do everything they feel they can following this game.

MARVEL’s Spider-Man is close to flawless for me in so many ways and it has easily surpassed all expectations I had going into this title. I lost myself in the New York City the game invited me to explore and as a comic book nerd every take on all the characters I know so well from Aunt May to even the Rhino felt new and fresh and not some carbon copy from a comic book story I have read. The way Insomniac Games approached this is so clearly from a place of love and passion for Spider-Man and MARVEL worlds that you come away from a session with the game with that feeling of admiration for what they have accomplished here. The very fact I am still gushing about how good this game is having completed it with Platinum Trophy obtained and I am still returning to spend time as Spider-Man in this game really is a testament of how if you pardon the pun, amazing this Spider-Man game is.

Nostalgia for great Spider-Man games of the past combined with the shadow of the success in the Arkham Series placed a lot of pressure on the game to deliver not to mention the high expectations of fans. This game nails everything fans wanted and did so by giving everything players could want in such a game and even then, still managed to go above and beyond and provide extra things. Superb voice actors bring a new and invigorating take to well known characters in a story that works hard into bringing players into its world that the moments when you switch from Peter Parker to another character never feels like an intrusion.

This truly is the best Spider-Man game for the webslinger and I am already chomping at the bit to see what comes next for it just six days since release. If you are still on the fence about this game, and sales figures and chart places across different countries suggest that is a rare thing right now, but do yourself a favour and buy this game. This year for PlayStation exclusives has just been off the chain with God of War, Ni No Kuni 2 and Yakuza 6 all battling for my own person Game of the Year, Spider-Man has webbed all of them up and truly pipped them right now.

Not even James Jonah Jameson himself could argue against how vital it is to have this friendly neighbourhood hero in your console right now.

A Closer Look

The Orbi Pro Router

The Orbi Pro Satellite

Setting up Orbi

Once you have connected up the Orbi router it’s time to work through the setting process. Connected to the Orbi WiFi network and follow the onscreen process.

You can choose to add a satellite at this point in the process, but I waited until later.

You can then upgrade any firmware.

And that’s it – the router is set up and ready to use.

Using the Orbi

Configuring the Orbi and making any changes are handled either through the Orbi app or through your browser. Below shows the browser version, as you can see it is very easy to see what your options are and to select anything you want to see more of.

You can make changes to your Internet setup:

Change Wireless settings:

For either Wireless network:

You can easily see what is connected, with a signifiant amount of detail.

If you want to enable Guest access you can do so:

There are also a number of advanced options to choose from and view:

Placing the Orbi Satellite

Once you have your Orbi router and network configured just how you want it the next step is to place your satellite, or satellites where you want them. Once you have them physically located where you want them it’s just a case of clicking on Add Orbi Satellite from the menu and following the on-screen instructions.

Once the process is complete you will be able to see them listed on the Attached Devices page, as you can see below. So in this example the satellite is connected to the router using 5G and has a status of Good.

Then all you need to do is connect up your devices to your Orbi network and away you go.

Final Thoughts

You can tell the difference between the satellite and the router by the top colour. The router is blue and the satellites are grey.

Setting up the router is relatively straightforward and fairly quick – just follow each of the steps and you should be up and running in no time.

One of the steps during the setup is a firmware check – make sure that you upgrade to the latest version of the firmware otherwise you might run into some problems as Netgear had a few issues recently that took a while to get resolved. Thankfully the latest firmware does resolve this issue and the my Orbi network has been stable since then.

You can choose to have your satellite or satellites connect to the router, or each other via WiFi – which depending on your walls and room layouts might work perfectly well, or if you have a wired connection near where you want the satellites you should connect the satellites to it. This then connects each satellite to the router using the Ethernet backhaul process which ensures you get the maximum possible speed from each satellite otherwise you will be limited to whatever speed the satellites will get when connecting either to the router or to each other. I noticed a significant speed and reliability increase when connecting the satellites to the router via Ethernet.

Then all you have to do is make any configuration settings you want and have your devices connect to the Orbi network and that’s it. Each satellite, along with the router also has Ethernet ports on the back so if you have devices that need a wired connection you can easily utilise those.

There are a lot of different configuration settings you can make – so do take the time to go through them all before you start connecting your devices as the web front end provides a lot of useful information as well.

You can place the router and the satellites on any service or you can use the included wall or ceiling mounts to make it look more professional – this is a great addition as the mounts fit the devices perfectly and blends in with them.

The overall coverage you get with the Orbi is really great – and walking around where you do have coverage with your device provides a seamless constant connection. Speed wise I found the connection to be excellent when the satellites were connected to the router via Ethernet, and between very good and good when connected via Wi-Fi, although to be fair the was because of my particular setup, so make sure you do your own testing, but if you can use Ethernet for the satellite to router connections you won’t be disappointed.

The Orbi Pro kit as reviewed here (SRK60) retails for around £399 and each additional satellite will cost you around £279.

If you don’t need some of the business type functions then you should definitely take a look at the non Pro version of the Orbi system which is just as good but without some of the additional business features and wall mounts!

If you need a Wi-Fi solution for your business or home then you want something that is going to be easy to set up, easy to maintain, and works well – that’s exactly what the Orbi Pro does.
