Sea of Thieves: New ‘Legends of the Sea’ Content Event has Launched!

0

Welcome in the New Year with a wealth of new additions in Sea of Thieves’ first free monthly content update of this decade, Legends of the Sea! Now live for all players across Xbox One, Windows 10 PC and with Xbox Game Pass, Legends of the Sea shines a spotlight on player immortalisations, sends adventurers in search of all-new Reaper’s Chests and introduces a fresh yet familiar face.

Seek Out the Legends of the Sea

Umbra, the skilful scribe who escaped the clutches of Captain Bronzebeard, has made her way through the Devil’s Shroud with a plethora of new Commendations in tow. Players may have noticed certain etchings and recognisable names dotted around Sea of Thieves’ world that refer to the accomplishments of players from the community. With Umbra’s assistance, these can now be located and interacted with to earn exclusive Commendations, Titles, tattoo sets and Doubloons!

Get Yourself Gilded

That charming scallywag Duke has made his return as leader of the Bilge Rats, and despite looking slightly the worse for wear, he has a list of Gilded Voyages for pirates to tackle. Players can also choose to deliver their rewards to an excavation site for double gold rewards at the cost of the reputation reward. Head over to The Reaper’s Hideout to find this excavation site dug deeper than ever before, where the Masked Stranger will claim your loot hauls for some extra coin.

There’s also a new set of Ashen Tomes ready to be collected, with accompanying Commendations and Xbox achievements. And Duke’s return means new sets of cosmetics for pirates to parade themselves in, including the Aristocrat Ship Set and new variants of the Parrot Clothing Set and Corsair Sea Dog Set!

Reap New Rewards

Sporting a gold decal, the new Reaper’s Bounty Chests work in much the same way as their Doubloon-awarding counterparts, except these ones reward brave buccaneers with 25,000 gold! The beacon emitted from Reaper’s Bounty Chests has a golden hue indicating its contents, and is trackable on the ship’s map like any other Reaper’s Chest.

As per Duke’s request, all Reaper’s Chests and Bounties are now to be taken to The Reaper’s Hideout, making for a more high-risk turn-in.

For more information on the Legends of the Sea update, including full release notes, visit the Sea of Thieves website. The update is available for free to all Sea of Thieves players who have bought the game on Xbox One or on Windows 10 PC, or players who have access to it with Xbox Game Pass. Simply download and install the latest Sea of Thieves update to get access.

New to Sea of Thieves? Join the fun with our all-new Maiden Voyage, a narrative-driven tutorial experience separate from Adventure and Arena modes. New Sea of Thieves players will begin their travels within this scenario, which provides guidance and information to fledgling sailors.

The Cross-play Opt Out Preference has also finally arrived for Adventure mode after coming originally to Arena Mode. This optional preference will allow Xbox One Console players using controller, to set a preference to only be placed in game servers with other Xbox One Console players instead of the full cross-play pool of Xbox One Controller, Xbox One Keyboard & Mouse and PC Players of Sea of Thieves. Now this is only a “soft Crossplay opt out” which means if the game is unable to place you in a server with other Xbox console players who have selected the same preference, you will be placed in the general pool. But so far, each time I have tested the preference, though it took a little longer to get in the game, it did put me in an Xbox One Console with controller only server of players. Simply go to Settings at the games main menu and find the preference option and set it to yes to apply the preference in both Adventure and Arena modes.

MARVEL’s Avengers Delayed until September

0

It has just been announced that the MARVEL’s Avengers game from Crystal Dynamics under Square Enix, has been delayed until September 4th 2020 to allow for more “fine tuning and polish”

In a statement posted to Social Media:

After playing the hands on demo at EGX 2019, got to admit that this does not surprise me, it is a very ambitious project that is supposed to run for years as a continued service however it certainly has had some less than positive reactions since its announcement and if they were to release and get it wrong, I do not think the MARVEL Big names would be impressed!

Now to wait to see if the wait will be worth it!

Sony Confirm they are Skipping E3 Again This Year

0

E3 does seem to becoming less and less vital to major gaming platforms, with Xbox holding their own briefing as well as Publishers Ubisoft and Nintendo. But with 2020 being the year of the next generation of console gaming, many had expected to see E3 as the launch pad for both the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5, something Sony have yet to really reveal anything about.

However, much like in 2019, Sony has confirmed to the site gamesindustry.biz that they have no plans to attend E3, but instead plan to hold their own event, most likely the reported ‘Experience PlayStation event.

A Sony Interactive Entertainment spokesperson said:

“After thorough evaluation SIE has decided not to participate in E3 2020, we have great respect for the ESA as an organization, but we do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year.

We will build upon our global events strategy in 2020 by participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe. Our focus is on making sure fans feel part of the PlayStation family and have access to play their favourite content. We have a fantastic line up of titles coming to PlayStation 4, and with the upcoming launch of PlayStation 5, we are truly looking forward to a year of celebration with our fans.”

Now I really cannot say that this is actually a surprise, E3 over the years has truly struggled to decide the kind of event it wants to be, from the original industry only event to the more public faced of recent years. But the major leak of press personal information last year was very damaging with little really done to try and put minds at ease over it. With platforms such as Sony PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox both happy to do their own events away from E3, it is hard to really see where this event fits into the grand scheme of things going forward.

Sony announcing they are skipping the event for the second year in a row probably highlights what many now see, that E3 is no longer the major gaming event it once was.

The dialogue in the trailer is interesting as it seems to record specific global moments of Divergence from Presidential assassinations to countries having civil wars. I am quite looking forward to Season 3 and hopeful it will deliver something special as extra time as been taken with it after some negative reaction to the last season, this could really be some cracking telly to watch in March!

Review: Doctor Who Series 12 – Episode 3 ‘Orphan 55’

Well to say Series 12 started with a massive game changing two part story in ‘Spyfall’ would be an understatement to say the least. Not only did with have a new threat in the form of an inter-dimensional race known as ‘the Kasavin’ but also the return of The Master. But the biggest chance came in the reveal that The Master personally destroyed Gallifrey, leaving it in a ruined state due to discovering that the very foundation of the Time Lords is a lie, leaving the 13th Doctor in shock and anger.

But now episode 3 ‘Orphan 55’ will take the Doctor, Graham, Yaz and Ryanand the Doctor to a luxury holiday on an alien planet. But their stay at Tranquillity Spa becomes a fight for survival against terrifying monsters and following Spyfall setting such a high benchmark for this new series, it has a lot to live up to.

Orphan 55 has a rather nice lighthearted start to the story with a little exposition to give us some insight that The Doctor is still processing the end of Spyfall as Yaz comments that The Doctor has been in a mood to which The Doctor almost angrily denies, no doubt still reeling from the revelation that The Master has destroyed Gallifrey. Graham completes a “coupon cube” which teleports the team to a 2 week holiday on ‘Tranquillity Spa’ resort,  which leaves the Doctor to explore on her own before it is revealed that the resorts systems are being damaged by a system virus. It all feels a little rushed to get to the monster part of the story.

Ryan infected with a “hopper virus” which the Doctor manages to remove from him leaving Ryan a little discombobulated for some light comedy fun, standard Doctor Who “hide behind the sofa” story. Speaking of Ryan, romance definitely seems to be his focus for series as 12 as he meets a young woman named Bella, who Ryan takes a shine too and actually flirts back with him. This is a nod back to Spyfall where Yaz warns Ryan off from trying to chat up her sister, and she even teases Ryan when The Doctor interrupts a little chat Ryan and Bella are having later in the story.

The Doctor begins to investigate what is going on at the resort, using her Physic Paper to convince the resort staff that she is a Resort Inspector, trying to get to the bottom of what is happening as security guards exchange gunfire and guests are running scared with creatures attacking from the shadows. We soon learn that the resort has been built on what is classed as an ‘Orphan Planet’, a planet that has been abandoned and unfit for habitation and that those in charge have built the resort in order to fund the terraforming of the world What is happening to the resort. The monsters are in fact the native life form known as Dreggs, an apex level predator capable of adapting to any environment and they are rather unhappy with the unwanted presence of this resort and its guests.

For me the running issue of having so many characters on board the TARDIS shows its head again as the team is simply sent off in different directions so they can all meet guests at the resorts to be their vehicle to be brought all together. Another problem with this episode is that even the guest stars have very limited moments in the episode, James Buckley players the resort’s maintenance engineer who is seemingly rubbish at his job and requires his young son, the actual engineering genius, to pretty much tell him what to do. Laura Fraser has a bigger role as the person in charge of the resort operation but the extremely unbelievable story-line for her and Bella was never convincing throughout.

So much of this episode is just made up of different story genres all blended together that you can visibly notice when the story switches from one to the other. We go from an Aliens type hiding from the monsters to suddenly having to go on a rescue mission where everyone has to tag along in order to recover one of the guests lost outside the resort and all before it then becomes a survival story as the group then has to retreat back to the resort whilst the Dreggs are all hunting them down. There was clearly a budget restriction as well following the epic opening Spyfall as a lot of devices were used to explain how something worked without relying on heavy special effects such as each person having an oxygen tank to breath outside the protection of the dome and was just accepted so the actors did not have to wear protective suits or even oxygen masks which made it all feel very silly.

Ultimately and the very thing that killed the episode for me was how it all boiled down to something that made Series 11 so painful to watch at times when the truth about the planet Orphan 55 is revealed to be that is in fact, Earth in the future, an earth where following a Vulcan Timelord Mind Meld with a Dregg, The Doctor learns about what happened and the story just devolves into social commentary about how if humanity does not stop arguing and being selfish and does nothing about Global Warming, it could lead to a possible future whereby the Earth’s natural resources are used up resulting in a World War and Nuclear apocalypse. The Doctor gives a speech to Ryan, Yaz and Graham about how Orphan 55 is just one possible future, and that people can make a difference if they started now.

It just made the ending feel completely flat and very heavy handed way of delivering social commentary which is never a bad thing if it is done in the right manner but this is an episode that could easily have featured in Series 11 and is a stark contrast to Spyfall which showed some much needed reactions to feedback of the last series. This episode had all the elements I just did not like from Chibnall’s first series and a lot of my complaints about it are on display here with too many characters for the story to focus on. Whilst Yaz commentating that the Doctor has been in a mood goes someway to show the Doctor is still impacted by what The Master has done, the rest of the episode is what I would call filler and felt more like a middle of the series episode rather than the follow up to Spyfall.

Following Spyfall I had hoped for something more substantial but for the first non Chibnall written story, it sadly was nothing more than a blend of multiple Sci Fi elements leading into a “if humanity does not stop arguing and focus on saving the planet together it will be destroyed” lecture, whilst the intention is honourable, the execution left the episode with a tired and lame finish and makes this the first very forgettable episode of series 12, which is disappointing after how promising Spyfall left me for Series 12.

I also hope that this whole ‘just leave the TARDIS behind as we go on an adventure’ that annoyed me in Series 11 and happens again in this episode quickly stops becoming a thing..it is the TARDIS for crying out loud, The Doctor and the TARDIS, I mean you wouldn’t want Batman without the Batmobile would you?

Birds of Prey Official Trailer 2

Have you ever hear the one about the cop, the songbird, the psycho and the mafia princess? “Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)” is a twisted tale told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell it. When Gotham’s most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her.

Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down.

In the Warner Bros. Pictures film, Margot Robbie (“I, Tonya”) returns as Harley Quinn, alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead (“10 Cloverfield Lane,” TV’s “Fargo”) as Huntress; Jurnee Smollett-Bell (HBO’s “True Blood”) as Black Canary; Rosie Perez (“Fearless,” “Pitch Perfect 2”) as Renee Montoya; Chris Messina (“Argo,” TV’s “Sharp Objects”) as Victor Zsasz; and Ewan McGregor (upcoming “Doctor Sleep,” the “Trainspotting” films) as Roman Sionis. Newcomer Ella Jay Basco also stars as Cassandra “Cass” Cain in her feature film debut.

Directed by Cathy Yan (“Dead Pigs”) from a script by Christina Hodson (“Bumblebee”), the film is based on characters from DC. Robbie also produced, alongside Bryan Unkeless and Sue Kroll. The film’s executive producers are Walter Hamada, Galen Vaisman, Geoff Johns, Hans Ritter and David Ayer. Joining Yan behind the scenes was a creative team comprised of director of photography Matthew Libatique (“A Star Is Born,” “Venom”); production designer K.K. Barrett (“Her”); editor Jay Cassidy (“American Hustle,” “Silver Linings Playbook”) and editor Evan Schiff (“John Wick Chapters 2 & 3”); and costume designer Erin Benach (“A Star Is Born”). The music is by Daniel Pemberton (“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”).
