Fitting the two batteries is easy and just involves you turned over the mouse – just be careful as the battery cover needs to be bent slightly to fit it back in place, don’t do it too hard or it might snap!

Final Thoughts

This new Sculpt Touch mouse from Microsoft is designed to be portable, so you take it with you when you are out and about and use it with your laptop. You can use it at home on your desktop if you want, but because it is designed to be portable it is slightly smaller than the average mouse and so for prolonged use it might be a little uncomfortable.

Talking of size, it fits well into the palm of your hand and is fairly light weight.

It has the usual left and right mouse buttons, although it has been designed so that those buttons are not visibly obvious, but they work and they work well.

The big feature of this mouse really is the 4 way touch scrolling on the top of the mouse. Usually you get two way (up and down) but for this mouse you can also scroll left and right which is invaluable when using with the new Windows 8 Start Screen. It works very well too and only needed the slightest of touches, which felt very natural.

As usual with hardware that uses batteries, make sure you either have a spare set ready just in case, and in fact consider swapping the batteries for a set of rechargeable ones, it will save you money in the long run, although Microsoft do claim up to 9 months of battery life, but obviously we can’t test that just yet – ask us again in 9 months!

The Sculpt Touch Mouse works with Windows, Mac and also Android tablets via Bluetooth. If your computer doesn’t have Bluetooth built in, consider buying a little Bluetooth dongle as they are very cheap.

The cost of the Sculpt Touch mouse is £49.99, but as usual look around for a good deal.

If you have Windows 8 and you want a portable mouse that using Bluetooth rather than wireless then take a look at the Sculpt Touch mouse from Microsoft.

Download Issue 7 of The MagPi Digital Magazine for lovers of the Raspberry Pi

If you have, or are interested in the Raspberry Pi, then you might want to download the new issue of The MagPi digital magazine.

magpi 7

This is how the Raspberry Pi guys describe the magazine:

The MagPi, a free online magazine dedicated to the Raspberry Pi, whose first issue was released a few days ago, is a perfect example of that. It’s been put together entirely by volunteers, guided by Ash Stone, Jason “Jaseman” Davies, Meltwater and other names you may recognise from the forums and comments on this site. I was broadly aware they were up to something, but I was amazed at the scope of what they sent me to look at earlier in the week, and I’ve been really, really impressed by the first issue. There are Debian and Puppy guides, articles on computing history, ideas for robotics projects, tutorials in Scratch and Python (with code you can type in yourself, just like in the good old days), features about the Raspberry Pi itself, and other goodies to dig into. I really can’t recommend it enough, and if you haven’t been lucky enough to get to the head of the queue, you don’t need a Raspberry Pi to find it useful (you might actually find the magazine good preparation before yours arrives).

It is a really interesting read – so go download it today, and let us know what you think!

First impressions and unboxing the iPad mini

Today saw the release of the iPad mini from Apple. We got one today and have been playing with it for a while. Here is our first impressions and our unboxing.

CDW - iPad Mini - 23

So this is Apple’s first iPad mini – it has a 7.9 inch display and is very thin and lightweight.

What’s in the box?

Along with the iPad mini itself is a plug and a lightening cable, plus a small amount of paperwork.

First Impressions

When I opened the outer packaging on the box and removed the actual iPad mini box, the first thing I thought was just how small it was compared on the “normal” iPad.

Upon opening the box and removing the mini, I was surprised just how small and lightweight it was – I could easily hold it in my hand and use it, but at the same time the screen quality was excellent.

Setting it up was just as easy as the iPad or iPhone – a few taps, swipes and key entries and I was up and running.

Despite the screen size difference, you get the familiar screen view:

CDW - iPad Mini - 1

Apps were working as fast as they did on my iPad 2 – I haven’t yet done a test against my iPad 3 because I don’t have it with me at the moment.

Battery life has been great, and just what I have come to expect from my iPad.

So far I am very happy with it and can see me taking it even more places than I did my iPad.

Halo 4 Forward Unto Dawn final part released

343 Industries has premiered the fifth and final part of the live-action digital series, Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, and it’s a good one.

Halo4_ForwardUntoDawn_KeyArt_11x17_F[1]

Check out the final part below:

Now that the final part has aired, I can reveal that I saw all 5 parts as a single extended movie a few weeks ago at a private screening with Microsoft. Attending the screening was the director Stewart Hendler and British actress Anna Popplewell. After the screening there was a Q&A and I also got to interview Anna.

HALO 4 FUD Evening

“Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn” tells an exciting story of heroism and sacrifice on a scale never before seen in the “Halo” universe, taking fans back to the beginning of the human and Covenant war and leading into the events of “Halo 4.” Set against the backdrop of a United Nations Space Command (UNSC) military academy, a group of highborn cadets are training to be the next generation of soldiers in the UNSC’s ongoing war with insurrectionists in the outer colonial planets. Among these cadets, Thomas Lasky struggles with his doubts about this war, and with the burden of expectations he may not be able to carry. As Lasky comes to terms with his potential as a military leader, the terrifying alien alliance known as the Covenant arrives and turns his world upside down. Inspired by the Master Chief, he must decide what it means to be a hero. “Halo” fans that experience Lasky’s thrilling origin story in “Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn” will be rewarded with special insights into the story of “Halo 4” and the “Halo Infinity Multiplayer” experience.

Directed by Stewart Hendler (“H+,” “Sorority Row”) and written by Todd Helbing and Aaron Helbing (“Smallville,” “Spartacus”), “Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn” features a diverse cast of established and up-and-coming Hollywood talent, including Tom Green (“Dance Academy”) as Thomas Lasky, Anna Popplewell (“The Chronicles of Narnia”) as Chyler Silva, Daniel Cudmore (“X2,” “X-Men: The Last Stand,” “The Twilight Saga”) as the Master Chief, Ayelet Zurer (“Angels & Demons,” “Munich”) as Mehaffey, Mike Dopud (“Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol”) as General Black, Enisha Brewster (“Footloose”) as April Orenski, Masam Holden (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Elizabethtown”) as Michael “Sully” Sullivan, Osric Chau (“2012”) as JJ Chen, Iain Belcher (“Supernatural”) as Vickers, and Kat De Lieva as Dimah.

“Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn” is backed by a top-tier production team led by executive producers Lydia Antonini and Josh Feldman, former Warner Bros. and Playtone executives, respectively. Continuing its involvement with the “Halo” franchise, Legacy Effects (“The Hunger Games,” “The Avengers,” “Avatar”) is creating specialised costumes and armor, and visual effects are being designed by an award-winning team led by John Sullivan (“The Pacific”). Production services are provided by Herzog & Co.

An extended, 90-minute Special Edition featuring additional footage and bonus content will be available Nov. 6 in the “Halo 4” Limited Edition and on video on-demand services.

Set almost five years after the events of “Halo 3,” “Halo 4” takes the series in a bold new direction and sets the stage for an epic new sci-fi saga, in which the Master Chief returns to confront his destiny and face an ancient evil that threatens the fate of the entire universe. In addition to a rich story and campaign, “Halo 4” introduces a groundbreaking new multiplayer offering, called “Halo Infinity Multiplayer,” that builds off of the “Halo” franchise’s rich multiplayer history and promises to continue to innovate and redefine the way people think about storytelling and multiplayer experiences.
