Is Microsoft Working on the Xbox Surface?

Microsoft is developing a gaming tablet, a report has suggested.
The firm is developing a 7-inch ‘Xbox Surface’ tablet designed with gaming in mind, according to The Verge.

Instead of running a version of Windows 8 like other Surface tablets, it will apparently have a custom operating system that will offer messaging and other tablet functions, but with a gaming focus.
The report states that the hardware is being developed at Microsoft’s Silicon Valley offices, and that Xbox-related buildings have been “locked down”, most likely due to increased testing.

It was added that a release is expected before the next Xbox console (Xbox 720), which is currently speculated for a late 2013.

The next Xbox console is rumoured to offer an improved Kinect device and two CPUs, one for gaming and the other for multimedia applications.
Microsoft’s Surface tablets launched last week alongside its new operating system, Windows 8.

Check out our Halo 4 review

It’s time to play Master Chief again with our review of Halo 4

Probably the most anticipated game this year has to be Halo 4 from 343 Industries. We have been playing it now for a few weeks and here is our review.

halo4_campaign-01

Halo 4 is the first of a new trilogy of Halo games known as the Reclaimer Trilogy. It is also the first Halo game from 343 Industries, who have taken over the reigns from Bungee.

Unless you have lived under a rock since the original Xbox was launched, you would have heard of Halo! Halo was the original launch title for the original Xbox. In fact, for me personally, it was the reason I purchased the original Xbox, in fact I imported one from the States just so I could play the game! Although that was a long time ago now.

Since that point there have been a few Halo releases – Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo ODST and Halo Reach, not to mention the Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary edition. However, Halo 3 was the last Halo game that had Master Chief in it, and so for some ODST and Reach just wasn’t the same.

When we last left the Chief at the end of Halo 3, he was adrift in the wreckage of the Forward Unto Dawn, telling Cortana to “wake me when you need me”. Several years have past, and its time to wake the Chief, because we need him!

Single Player Campaign

halo4_campaign-02

The game starts off with Cortana waking up Master Chief in the wreckage of a space ship with the Covenant on board. There is something very familiar about this. 343 Industries have paid homage to the original Halo with this first mission, and it feels good to be back as the Chief.

It’s not long before all hell breaks loose and we are introduced to the Promethians and the main bad guy called the Didact.

halo4_campaign-03

It’s then time for the Chief and Cortana to do what they do best and kill anything and everything that moves and to save the day.

During the campaign there are a lot of new weapons and new vehicles, including a Mech called the Mantis, a massive AT-AT like vehicle called the Mammoth and you even get to fly some ships, including a Pelican and a Broadsword.

There is even part of a mission that is reminiscent of the Death Star run from Star Wars (you will see what I mean when you play it).

Again, I am not going to spoil the story by saying anymore, so go an play it now.

You can play the campaign on your own, co-op split screen with a friend or with up to 3 additional players via Xbox Live.

Infinity Multiplayer

halo4_multiplayer-wraparound-02

For those who love multiplayer, there is a series of different maps and games to play in the Infinity mode. You create your own Spartan and advance him, or her, during the various games and challenges and you can achieve commendations and increase your rank accordingly.

Spartan Ops

Through a weekly series of cinematic episodes on Xbox LIVE, Spartan Ops will tell the continuing story of the UNSC Infinity, following the events of “Halo 4.” These episodes will centre on the UNSC Infinity leaders and crew, and a new team of Spartans – Majestic Squad. These cinematic episodes will provide the backdrop for the weekly Spartan Ops gameplay missions. Playable in single-player or cooperatively (with up to three friends), explore the corners of Requiem in these objective-based missions, and help uncover the secrets of the mysterious Forerunner world.

The first missions are available now at launch.

Final Thoughts

Because there are a lot of plot points and potential spoilers in the campaign, I’m not going to discuss them in the review, as it wouldn’t be fair, because believe me, there are some things you wouldn’t want spoiled, not to mention Microsoft would send a Covenant ship to find me!

All I will say is as usual once you have completed the game, watch all the credits, and wait to see what else happens….

I also recommend watching all five parts of Halo 4 Forward Unto Dawn. There are a few links with the game itself, and so once you have watched it, when certain parts of the game take place you feel more invested. It’s hard not spoiling the game!!!

Personally I loved Halo 4! During the year I have had the opportunity to see various parts of the game at demos and events, including getting to play a few hours back in September where Microsoft had to literally drag me away from the Xbox!

As soon as the review copy arrived I couldn’t wait to play it – and play it I did! I decided to concentrate on the campaign as I wanted to know what happened having played a little before. I soon found myself immersed in the Halo universe once again and I looked at the clock to find out it was 2am and I had been playing for hours without realising it. Now if that isn’t the sign of a good game, I don’t know what is.

halo4_campaign-04

The following day I played and I played, and I eventually finished the campaign. Needless to say there were moments in the game where I just sat back and was surprised, and even shocked, and one part that was emotional. It’s very difficult to convey that without going into details, but once you have played and completed the campaign you will know exactly what I meant and where!

I have read some other reviews and comments that complained that the campaign was too short or too easy. Yes, I completed it in around 6 plus hours, but that was on EASY (you really should only play Halo on Legendary, but I needed to know what happened and I needed to play it all before I could write the review). I am now playing it again on Legendary and it’s a lot harder and a lot longer!

There were a few little things that I didn’t like at least were a little frustrating – the first was that at times the music and sound effects were so loud that you couldn’t hear the talking or the information you needed. So make sure you set up your audio before you start playing.

The second thing was that the AI on your fellow soldiers during the later missions at times was bad. I don’t mean the soldiers on foot or those on the vehicles, I mean the ones driving. A number of times I jumped either in the passage seat or on the gun only to find the AI was just driving into a hill and it just couldn’t go any further so I ended up either jumping off and walking, or kicking the AI out and driving myself!

Neil Davidge composed the score for Halo 4 and it really helps to set the scene for the game. It’s even one of those game soundtracks you can listen to when you are not playing the game.

Multiplayer is a lot of fun. It has been interesting playing multiplayer with only a small group before the official release date, something tells me that a lot more players will be on-board now the game is out.

Spartan Ops is a great idea – each week over the course of a number of weeks you get new content, for free, so even if you have finished the campaign you can play new content. And something tells me that this wont be the last new content we see for Halo 4.

In a few weeks time when everyone has been playing Halo 4 for a while we will talk about the story and revisit multiplayer and Spartan Ops, so get playing and leave us your thoughts by commenting below.

Overall if you are a fan of Halo then you have to get this game. And if you are new to Halo then you won’t be disappointed either. Go on, get it, now.

Well done 343 Industries you have done Halo proud and I cannot wait for Halo 5. Axios!

Halo 4 is available right now for the Xbox 360 – and frankly it’s a must have game. It’s not just one of the best games of the year, it is THE game of the year.

Division-M Releases DriveBender v 1.4.0.0

DriveBender has left its beta phase and is now available as a released product in version 1.4.0.0.  Read on for details.

slide1_discount_50

DriveBender has left its beta phase and is now available as a released product in version 1.4.0.0.  DriveBender was developed for Windows Home Server to add drive pooling features, and it is also available for Windows.  Here are the product features:

Drive Bender is state of the art, single point storage pool technology for all versions of Microsoft Windows. From Windows XP through to the new Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012. There is even a Windows Home Server 2011 specific version that is shipped with a native WHS dashboard addin.

Drive Bender presents multiple hard drives as a single pool of data storage, either as one or more drive letters, or a network shared drive. Drive Bender is able to do this with any drive recognized by Windows, including external drive such as USB, Firewire etc.

Management

Drive Bender for Windows is shipped with a metro style management dashboard client. This client allows for the remote management of the pool, mount point and hard drives. The dashboard also provides real-time information on file type usage, primary and duplicate file usage and read and write rates (for both the pool and the individual drives within the pool).

Drive Bender for WHS is shipped with a metro style WHS addin that allows for pool, mount point and drive management (classic WHS interface also available). Built upon the same platform as Drive Bender for Windows, the WHS edition offers a “best in class” WHS experience.

Performance

Drive Bender is built upon an enterprise grade driver that allows for high I/O throughput, and unlike some of the competition, Drive Bender continues to perform well even as the pool grows. In addition performance is further enhanced through our Smooth Stream technology. Smooth Stream is a feature that can improve file streaming performance (i.e. file coping or video / music streaming etc.) by caching a certain amount of the file being read.

Expandable

Drive Bender also provides the user with the ability to seamless expand their storage pool by simply adding a new drive. Adding a new drive expands the pool by the size of the new drive. Existing data within the pool is redistributed to the new drive to ensure the pool remain balanced.

Drive Merging and Converting

Drive Bender also offers a merge capability, allowing users to take a drive that contains data, and merge that drive (and its data) into the pool. In addition there is also a drive conversion feature. This can take and existing drive letter (mounted against a physical drive) and convert this into a pooled drive. Once completed, new hard drives can be added to expand the once fixed drive.

Drive Swapping

Drive Bender offers a drive swap feature that allow a user to seamlessly swap a drive in the pool for a new hard drive… thus making the upgrading a pool easier than ever.

Data Redundancy

To further ensure data safety, Drive Bender uses file duplication (optional down to the folder level) as its primary means of file redundancy. This means that any files written to the pool, is written to two physical hard drives simultaneously. And unlike software based RAID product, there is no major performance hit when writing to the pool.

Non-destructive

One of the key Drive Bender features is its non-destructive file system technology. In short, this means that all drives within a Drive Bender pool utilize the standard NTFS format, and can be added to the pool without being formatted. Again unlike RAID, all pooled drives can be removed and read on any machine capable of reading the NTFS format (this includes all modern Windows platforms).

Easy to Try

Because of our non-destructive file system, taking Drive Bender for a test drive is easy. Simply specify the drives to be included in the pool, and you are ready go. The drives are not formatted (unless specified), the only change made to the drive is the addition of a folder that holds the contents of the pool and a small number of configuration files.

Check it out here if you are looking for a drive pooling option for Windows Home Server or Windows systems.

Assassins Creed 3 has found itself at the top of the Xbox 360 chart this week, closely followed by WWE ’13.

The other big release from last week, Need for Speed Most Wanted could only manage 5th place behind Forza Horizon. I wonder what new game will be the New Number One Next Week, also 59% of the sells for Assassins Creed 3 was on the Xbox 360 with 41% for the PlayStation 3.

Experience Halo in Liechtenstein last week and London tomorrow night

0

Last week Microsoft transformed the Principality of Liechtenstein by taking over some of the country’s most iconic landmarks, including a 13th century castle and a working mine, to create a real-life replica of the “Halo” universe within the heart of Europe to mark the launch of “Halo 4”. And tomorrow it’s London’s turn!

halo

For one day only, the mountainous landscapes of the normally tranquil Liechtenstein countryside became a stage for an epic sci-fi saga as Xbox 360 created a mysterious alternate universe inspired by the video game franchise which has sold a staggering 46 million copies worldwide since launch in 2001.

Super fans and worldwide media from 16 different countries were catapulted into this off-world environment to take part in a theatrical experience which saw them travel to a top secret location before being unexpectedly thrust into a war zone which recreated brutal battle grounds through pyrotechnic explosions, thunderous sound effects and cinematic set builds.

You can check out the video below:

Now its London’s Turn

London will host a spectacular stunt the evening of Monday 5th November, down the River Thames from the Greenwich Peninsula to Tower Bridge – under the watchful gaze of the Master Chief. Fans should arrive at Butlers Wharf, adjacent to the Design Museum (28 Shad Thames, London SE1 2YD), no later than 7:30pm so as not to miss out on the action.

There will also be more than 350 midnight openings taking place the length and breadth of the UK, with the flagship London launch taking place at GAME in Westfield Stratford.  Fans will have the opportunity to count down to “Halo 4’s” much anticipated release with developers from 343 Industries, get early hands-on time with the game, win coveted “Halo” merch and prizes provided by Samsung, the official TV launch partner for “Halo 4” in the UK, see the Master Chief in person, take photos with a replica Warthog vehicle, meet The Gadget Show’s Jason Bradbury, and sample Mountain Dew’s “Halo 4” themed “Game Fuel” drink and the exclusive “Halo 4”-themed pizza from Pizza Hut.

A limited number of fans can also board a free bus from the Design Museum to GAME Stratford at 8:30pm, immediately following the Butlers Wharf stunt. Spaces will be limited and available on a first come, first served basis.
