I reviewed DAVE THE DIVER when it was first released, and I’ve played it on Steam and Xbox. Accordingly, when I was offered the DLC, DAVE THE DIVER – In the Jungle, I couldn’t wait. I expected it to be another minor DLC that was fun but not fulfilling. Instead, this feels like a sequel with new mechanics, a fresh location, and a different way to play.
MINTROCKET have published and developed this excellent addition to the franchise. It is a single-player game that replaces the Blue Hole Lagoon with a freshwater prehistoric lake. Furthermore, you move away from the Sushi restaurant and focus on a new and exclusive grill. Although there are familiar elements to the core gameplay, the new additions work exceptionally well.
DAVE THE DIVER – In the Jungle asks you to build relationships.
The original game takes a linear approach, with missions guiding you through a fun and interesting story. Although it is pretty outlandish, the blend of characters, the enjoyable action, and the great blue ocean were a joy to experience. DAVE THE DIVER – In the Jungle expands things nicely with a relationship system, resource gathering, side quests, and unique weaponry.
On top of this, your relationships matter. Your punters are your friends, so keeping them happy is essential. This social system adds depth without being too oppressive. Furthermore, it is pretty easy to follow, so you never feel overwhelmed. At its core, it is still the light-hearted, fun, and silly title. However, I enjoyed the more community-focused action, the new grill, and the different animals I encountered.
Secrets.
The jungle is a secretive place. If you then chuck in a huge freshwater lake and some prehistoric areas, you are in for a treat. DAVE THE DIVER – In the Jungle hides many secrets in plain sight, and those who love to explore will enjoy the twists and turns.
The combination of overworld and underwater works better than I anticipated. The world-building, characters, and locations were amazing to explore. Additionally, this supports the relationship elements and the quirky undertones.
I loved this expansion, but it is fair to say that it won’t hit you like the original. The purely underwater action, that feeling of silliness and business, and the discovery of new species aren’t as surprising this time around. This isn’t a complaint; it’s simply better to temper your expectations when diving into another 15 to 20 hours of DAVE madness.
DAVE THE DIVER – In the Jungle retains its charm.
The setting, cast of characters, and ideas may be new, but DAVE THE DIVER – In the Jungle retains its charm. It is gloriously pixelated, and the protagonists are as loud as they ever were. Alongside this, the use of lighting creates depth and drama, and the level design is interesting and expansive.
The audio is a blend of upbeat tunes, slow and sombre tracks, and ambient sounds. This works nicely to generate that jungle theme. Wooden flutes, drums, and tropical percussive instruments transport you from your gaming chair to a hot and dangerous island world.
Excellent controls.
If you’re reading this review, I can guess that you’ve played the original. If that is the case, you’ll know how easy it is to play. The control system hasn’t had an overhaul, as it doesn’t need to be improved. I tested it on PC, Xbox, and my Steam Deck, and it was a joy to play no matter the platform.
DAVE THE DIVER – In the Jungle offers around 20 hours of fun-filled land and water exploration. Furthermore, it is less linear than the base game. Consequently, it feels more expansive.
