Lou’s Lagoon is the latest in a long list of cosy games to hit a rather saturated marketplace. Accordingly, it had to do a lot to stand out from the crowd. Thankfully, it has some unique elements to keep you busy. Furthermore, it has plenty of side activities, exploration layers, and a pleasant aesthetic to appease every hardcore genre fan.
Tiny Roar is the developer, and Megabit Publishing has published this action-adventure crafting affair. It is a single-player title that can be enjoyed on handheld consoles or your home PC or gaming machine. It has that wonderful cosy edge that fans of this genre expect. Additionally, it is relaxed, and there are no crass words or extreme violence to contend with. Consequently, it is a family-friendly experience.
Lou’s Lagoon tells a familiar tale.
The idea of travelling halfway across the world to assist a distant relative is nothing new. Lou’s Lagoon uses this idea to kickstart its plot. However, things take an unexpected twist as danger and magic get in the way of your plans.
You play the role of Lou. This helpful young ‘un wishes to assist their uncle on the Limbo Archipelago. It is a beautiful place that has friendly locals, fishing, farming, and other relaxing activities. However, your uncle is nowhere to be seen, and the delivery business is in tatters. A mysterious storm has devastated the islands, and you need to get to the bottom of the cause.
Exploration.
The plot doesn’t overpower the action. Instead, it pushes you towards every pleasant interaction you experience. Each of the interconnected islands is filled with islanders who desperately need your help. These quests help you focus as you fly between the lands in your seaplane.
The plane is a fun and novel way to get around. This is freedom that is rarely witnessed in this genre. After you repair the plane, you are free to land and take off from each body of water. This was a nice change of pace from the usual fast travelling or hub locations. Instead, you choose where to go, who to interact with, and how to solve quests and gather resources.
These elements are a key component of Lou’s Lagoon. You must use your Swirler to grab driftwood, scrap metal, and other useful bits. This can be upgraded for more impressive materials. This offers a nice layer of depth to the action. Moreover, it is complemented by a handful of crafting machines. These elements don’t feel particularly original, but they work well with the learning curve.
Side activities.
Moving between islands and helping the locals was great fun. However, it is the side activities that occupy your time. Delivery jobs, fishing, decoration, character customisation, and trading resources keep you busy.
Due to the “play-at-your-own-pace” design, you can spend as much or as little time on each of these activities. Gathering resources monopolises much of the action. However, I couldn’t resist the fishing activities. It was wonderfully laid-back, and wasting hours staring at the scenery was a nice way to unwind.
The customisation options didn’t float my boat, but I know that creative types will love every moment. Placing furniture and making every part of your boat and home your own creates a sense of ownership. This didn’t bother me, but I know loads of gamers will enjoy this experience.
Finally, there are plenty of secrets to discover. Treasure hunting and hard-to-reach places focus on the simple platforming mechanics. New traversal abilities are unlocked as you progress, and this forces you to explore the world repeatedly. Although this may be tedious for some, I enjoyed opening new areas and discovering every hidden pathway.

The level design isn’t technically impressive. Instead, Lou’s Lagoon focuses on a cute and vibrant tropical setting. Although there are hidden pathways and secrets to discover, the game doesn’t make things too complicated. I appreciated this as I wanted a relaxed time. Graphically, it focuses on a lighthearted cartoon style. This gives the developer some creative licence. Each animal and island has a magical, unusual edge that matches the mysterious moments.
The audio supports that relaxing feel. The background music is gentle and upbeat. The lack of intensity works perfectly for longer gaming sessions. Moreover, ambient sounds and calm noises help keep things flowing. If you adore the sound of the ocean, you will feel closer to nature while playing this title.
Tight controls.
I was impressed by the control system. The helpful UI and straightforward tutorial ensure that you are up and running in no time. Furthermore, each activity and side quest is simple to understand. Therefore, this is ideal for gamers of all ages.
I don’t consider Lou’s Lagoon to be a massive game. Instead, you’ll invest around 35 hours to get everything done. If you’re a completionist, there is plenty of stuff to keep you busy. Moreover, if you want to waste hours fishing and exploring, this has that covered as well. Subsequently, there is plenty of replay value and longevity.

The cosy action genre isn’t a demanding genre, but it is one that can be horribly executed. Thankfully, Lou’s Lagoon gets things right, and everything is balanced. The use of a seaplane is fun and interesting, and I like how easy it was to explore and execute every side task. Accordingly, it is fun, cute, and relaxing, and I recommend buying it here!
