My Favourite Streamed TV Shows of 2023

Now that we are in December, I thought I would do a quick round up of some of my favourite streamed TV shows this year.

There are a number of different streaming options available now, including Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Apple TV, Prime and others, alongside cheap cable tv. According to ExpressVPN, a number of the streaming channels consolidated, which can be attributed to the escalating cost of content production, intensifying competition for subscribers, and the need to scale up for sustained profitability. Ultimately this should mean better options for customers like you and I.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

The highly anticipated second season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” captivated fans of the iconic sci-fi franchise. Set in the same universe as the original “Star Trek” series, this Paramount+ original series continues to explore the voyages of the starship Enterprise under the command of Captain Christopher Pike.

Led by the brilliant Ethan Peck as Spock, Anson Mount as Pike, and Rebecca Romijn as Una, the dynamic trio brings depth and authenticity to their respective roles.

I really liked the first season of Strange New Worlds, and I enjoyed season 2 even more. My favourite episode was Subspace Rhapsody, a fully musical episode that needs to be seen and heard!

I cant wait for season 3!

Slow Horses

Winner of Best English-Language Drama Series at the 2022 C21 International Drama Awards, “Slow Horses” is a darkly humorous espionage drama that follows a dysfunctional team of British intelligence agents who serve in a dumping-ground department of MI5 known un-affectionately as Slough House. In season three, a romantic liaison in Istanbul threatens to expose a buried MI5 secret in London. When Jackson Lamb and his team of misfits are dragged into the fight, they find themselves caught in a conspiracy that threatens the future not just of Slough House but of MI5 itself.

Oldman stars as Jackson Lamb, the brilliant but misanthropic leader of the spies, who end up in Slough House due to their career-ending mistakes as they frequently find themselves blundering around the smoke and mirrors of the espionage world. The ensemble cast also includes Academy Award-nominee Kristin Scott Thomas, BAFTA Scotland Award-winner Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves, Rosalind Eleazar, Christopher Chung, Freddie Fox, Chris Reilly, Samuel West, Sophie Okonedo, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Kadiff Kirwan and Academy Award-nominee Jonathan Pryce. Ṣọpẹ Dìrísù joins the season three cast as Sean Donovan, the former head of security at the British embassy in Istanbul, along with Katherine Waterston who plays Alison Dunn, an MI5 agent who uncovers a dark secret at the heart of the agency.

Each season of Slow Horses is better than the last (and that’s saying something)! This is the 3rd season and as it’s still airing I don’t want to give anything away, but there’s lots of action, intrigue, double-crosses and of course brilliant one liners from Jackson Lamb!

Succession

Succession is an American satirical comedy-drama television series created by Jesse Armstrong that aired on HBO from June 3, 2018, to May 28, 2023. The series centers on the Roy family, the owners of global media and entertainment conglomerate Waystar RoyCo, and their fight for control of the company amidst uncertainty about the health of the family’s patriarch.

I really enjoyed Succession – it took me a few episodes to really get invested, in fact, I almost gave up! I am so glad I didn’t though as it’s been one of my all-time favourite shows. I really felt the show went out on a high and it will be missed!

The Night Agent

Low-level FBI agent Peter Sutherland works in the basement of the White House manning a phone that never rings – until the night it does, propelling him into a conspiracy that leads all the way to the Oval Office.

The Night Agent was a really good action thriller with lots of twists and turns! I imagine there will be a second season!

Gen V

From the world of “The Boys” comes “Gen V,” which explores the first generation of superheroes to know that their super powers are from Compound V. These heroes put their physical and moral boundaries to the test competing for the school’s top ranking.

I love The Boys and so when I heard there was going to be a spin off I couldn’t wait to see it. I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy it as much, but I really did! I was disappointed when the season ended because it meant no new episodes! But rumour has it that The Boys Season 4 starts off just after the end of Gen V, and I’m certain there will be a second season too!

Loki

The mercurial villain Loki resumes his role as the God of Mischief in a new series that takes place after the events of “Avengers: Endgame.”

Loki has always been one of my favourite characters, but thats mainly due to the amazing performance of Tom Hiddlestone. I really enjoyed season 1 of Loki, but season 2 really took the story to the next level. I cant wait to see what this means for the MCU!

There are lots of other shows I could have mentioned, but these were really standout ones for me. And we still have a few weeks left of 2023 – and that means the 2nd season of Reacher! And I can’t wait!

And now that both the writers and actors strikes are over, we can look forward to lots more in 2024!
