Buffalo Technology has announced a new cloud access service called Buffalo Link, designed to give you simple, secure access to your data via the cloud.  One drawback to remote access and cloud access solutions in the NAS space today is complexity of setup.  Many users find the setup process too hard, and want an easy, secure method of accessing data while on the go.  Buffalo Tech is rolling out their answer to this problem across all of their new networking devices, starting with the LinkStation 400 series (we told you about those NAS units here).  Setup is simple, the connection is secure and your data never leaves your NAS and network until you access it over the internet.  Here is how Buffalo describes the service:

BuffaloLink is the easy, secure way to bridge the content in your digital world.

BuffaloLink is a cutting-edge service that consolidates your networked Buffalo devices for easy management and securely connects you to your content even while away from home. Easily access your files remotely – all over the Internet! BuffaloLink is free with supported products and easy to use.

Access to Your Files, Anywhere

Remotely access your files wherever you are over the Internet. BuffaloLink securely connects you to your content without advanced configurations or membership fees. Stream movies and music from your LinkStation NAS at home while vacationing in Honolulu, access that important business presentation from the boardroom and access new family photos to view with friends while traveling across the country.

Simple to Set Up

Setting up BuffaloLink is easy. There are no advanced configurations required, no specialty software to install and no subscription fees to pay. Your connection is secure and your files are safely stored on your Buffalo device on your own network.

Use with Your Mobile Devices

While on the go, access your content and share files from your mobile devices. Support for Apple® and Android smartphones and tablets expands accessibility, making it even easier and more convenient to connect to your content when you need it.

Here are some screen shots of the UI that Buffalo also provided:

The UI looks clean and simple, and it rendered well on the Android and iOS devices that Buffalo demoed for me in the booth.  Of course, I can’t comment on how it works in a real-world setting, but it looks like this is a very good start at remote access.  Buffalo also indicated that the following enhancements are already in development:

  • Easy sharing with friends and family
  • Windows and Mac based integration apps
  • Whether at home or on the road, have drive letter access
  • Full device configuration access
  • One-click access to BitTorrent downloader

This service will ship with the LinkStation 400 units sometime in early 2013; I’ll keep you posted on the availability of those units as soon as I have something to share.
