Options
The Options choice enables you select whether you want to backup contacts, or photos, or both. You can get a backup name, although its not very friendly, you can choose to encrypt your contacts with a password and choose your restore options. Not a lot of choice, but then you really don’t need a lot!
Backup
To perform a backup you need to have the SD card plugged in and select Backup.
Just press the Start Backup button to begin….
You will see a 30 second countdown start to warn you the backup is about to start – you can just click Start Now if you want.
Backing up your contacts takes only a few seconds.
However, backing up your photos takes an age! Each photo took around 4 minutes, which as you can see from the screenshot below, I had 546 photos on my iPhone 4, so do that math! You do get a KB countdown per picture though, if that makes you feel any better.
My advice would be to backup overnight, which is often when I leave my phone on charge anyway.
Restore
To start a restore, just select it!
If you are backing up more than one phone (in my case I has the 3GS and the 4) you will be asked to select which backup to restore. Fortunately it will tell you which is your current device which makes it much easier!
If you had chosen to encrypt your contacts, now would be the time to decrypt them.
Press the Start Restore button and the contacts are read and restored in a matter of seconds.
Then next step is the photos, which obviously will take much, much longer!
But it all works as expected, so that’s great.
