Using XBMC

The interface is very easy to use and you can easy find what you are looking for.

You can also see a list of available add-ons, and you can just select one.

You then see information about the add-in and you can choose to install it if you want it. I decided to try the Revision 3 add-on as we only talked about the Media Center add-on for it yesterday.

You can see the progress of the downloads as well.

You can then easily see what you have installed from the list.

Then when you select the add-on from the relevant menu, in this case Videos, you can see the directory is retrieved and updated giving you the latest list of available content.

So in my case I scrolled through and selected Unboxing Porn again.

And then you can see the list of available episodes – so just pick one, sit back, and enjoy.

Final Thoughts

It’s been a long time since I played with XBMC – to be honest, it was back on my original Xbox – so that will give you some idea!

The interface was very smooth and easy to use, and I love the ease of adding new elements to it, and changing the look and feel.

I’m going to try it on the Mac and also the Live CD to see how it works with those, but my guess is it will be the same.

I’m also going to try using this as my main media consumption program for a while and I will report back on how I get on.

Have you used XBMC? What do you think?

  1. I have tried it in the past and always found it sluggish. Maybe it was the hardware I was putting it on, usually an old laptop. However, I find the same laptop fine for Windows 7 Ult with Media Centre. Maybe I'll try v10 and see how it goes.

  2. I Installed it on an old PC with Win XP Pro and a P4 with Hyper Threading CPU that I converted to an HTPC by beefing it up with 4GB of RAM and an HIS Radeon HD 4670 IceQ Native HDMI 1 GB DDR3 AGP Graphics Card (H467QS1GHA). It works beautifully infact better than Boxee. In Boxee for some reason the video sometimes slows down even when I play a DVD movie but same stuff works beautifully on XBMC. I even use Playon through XBMC and am quiet impressed with the result. The only problem I have encountered so far is sometimes the video addon does not work it says the script failed and am not sure why its happening, other than that its a beautiful beast.

  3. In what way is this a review? Page 1 is copied directly from the XBMC website and page 2 summarises as “Yeah, I haven’t really tried it but I will do at some point. In the meantime, wouldn’t it be grand if you could all review it for me.”

    Baaah!

    • Im sorry you feel that way, but I dont see how it isnt a review? It covers what it is, how to install it, and talks about using it and gives a final comment. That in my mind is a review. Of course though if you would like to point me to your review I would happily take a look it 🙂
