We’ve teamed up with Wargaming.net and World of Warplanes to give you the chance to get a Supermarine Type 224 and 300 gold for free.

300px-Supermarine_224

The Supermarine Type 224 was an inverted gull-wing monoplane fighter aircraft designed by R.J. Mitchell at Supermarine in response to Air Ministry Specification F.7/30, which sought a fighter for introduction to succeed the Gloster Gauntlet. It was powered by the Rolls-Royce Goshawk engine, which used an experimental evaporative cooling system, and problems with this combined with its disappointing performance led to it being rejected, a contract for production aircraft eventually going to the Gloster Gladiator. It is nevertheless notable because R.J. Mitchell learnt lessons from its failure that were to contribute greatly to his success with the Supermarine Spitfire.

Here you can watch the Type 224 in action:

Review of the Samsung SSD 840 EVO mSATA

Last year we reviewed the Samsung SSD 840 PRO SSD and it was our favourite SSD. Now less than a year later Samsung have released the 840 EVO series and we have been testing the 1TB mSATA model.

CDW Review Samsung 840EVO mSATA SSD - 6

Samsung has announced the entry-level SSD ‘840 EVO’ line-up with significantly higher sequential write performance. Utilizing the industry’s most compact 10nm-class 128Gb high-performance NAND, Samsung proprietary controller and Turbo Write drive, the Samsung SSD 840 EVO boasts superior performance. The Samsung SSD 840 EVO also has flexible product supply capacity, making it the most competitive device on the market today.

Compared with the 250GB 840 Series SSD, the highest selling capacity of the 840 lineup, the new 250GB 840 EVO now delivers 520MB/s sequential write speed – making it more than 2 times faster than last generation. In the case of 120GB model, the 840 EVO achieves 410MB/s sequential write speed, which is approximately 3 times as fast as that of the 120GB 840 Series SSD.

For the 1TB 840 EVO SSD, the sequential read/write performance has reached 540MB/s and 520MB/s. Furthermore, both the random read and write performance have achieved the highest level, reaching 98,000 IOPS (Input Output Operations Per Second) and 90,000 IOPS, respectively.

The Samsung SSD 840 EVO introduces two important features for data security: hardware-based AES 256bit Full Disk Encryption (FDE) and PSID. Hardware-based AES Encryption helps safeguard data against attack by encrypting all information on the disk at the hardware level, which means there is no detrimental effect on performance.

When you forget your SSD security password, PSID protects your data on the drive by executing a cryptographic erase which returns the drive to its factory status, preventing any unauthorized access to your data.

SSDs

Solid State Drives, or SSDs, are innovative data storage devices that deliver high performance, reliability, and quality by using NAND Flash memory instead of the magnetic disks used in traditional Hard Disk Drives (HDDs). SSDs provide very fast PC booting and application loading speeds and perform exceptionally well in multi-tasking environments – all while consuming less power, emitting very little heat, producing no noise, and offering outstanding stability compared to conventional HDDs.

Specifications (the same for the mSATA)

Using the 840 EVO Series

The 840 EVO Series SSD is easy to install and use. It comes with Samsung’s SSD Magician software (see Final Thoughts for more on this).

Magician eliminates the confusion and uncertainties of SSD management, making it simple for users to maximize the performance and lifetime of their Samsung SSD. In addition to its performance optimization features, Magician (from the version 4.2) also provides 840 EVO users the option to enable RAPID mode (Real-time Accelerated Processing of Input-output Data) – an innovative performance enhancement that processes data on a system level by using free DRAM memory as a cache. Once enabled in Magician, RAPID mode provides an overall PC performance boost (see later for more details).

Data Migration (Cloning your old drive)

If you want to use the 840 EVO as your system drive you can either install a clean version of Windows, followed by all your software, or you can use the Samsung Data Migration software (if you purchased one of the kits – see later for more details).

CDW-Review-of-the-Samsung-840-EVO-SS[15]

The software is simple to use, you just install it and run it from within Windows.

CDW-Review-of-the-Samsung-840-EVO-SS[2]

Then you connect up the 840 EVO, and select the source drive (in my case it was the 840 PRO from last year) and then select the 840 EVO as the destination drive.

CDW-Review-of-the-Samsung-840-EVO-SS[26]

After accepting the various warnings about not being able to get your data back if you select the wrong destination you just sit back and wait. As you can see, I cloned a 238.5GB drive in just over 23 minutes, and it worked perfectly.

CDW-Review-of-the-Samsung-840-EVO-SS[3]

Performance Testing

Here is our usual suite of performance testing – all testing was conducted via a SATA III 6Gb connection.

The spec of the machine used to do the testing is as follows:

  • Windows 8 Pro, 64-bit version
  • 16GB RAM
  • Intel Core i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz

Windows 8

This gave me a Primary hard disk rating of 8.1, which is the highest I have ever had this rating.

CDW-Review-of-the-Samsung-840-EVO-SS[4]

HD Tune Pro

The average Read speed was 371.3 MB/s (the 840 PRO scored 299.8 MB/s).

CDW-Review-of-the-Samsung-840-EVO-SS[28]

The average Write speed was 348.8 MB/s (the 840 PRO scored 265.3 MB/s).

CDW-Review-of-the-Samsung-840-EVO-SS[8]

RAPID Mode

RAPID (Real-time Accelerated Processing of I/O Data) Mode is an innovative performance enhancement tool which processes data on the system level by utilizing free DRAM memory as cache. RAPID Mode was designed to increase the overall performance of PC, combining fastest SSD available in the market and the most advanced storage management algorithm in Magician 4.2.

RAPID Mode analyses a user’s application and data usage, optimizes the I/O for Samsung SSDs accordingly, and eliminates system performance bottlenecks.

In order to deliver the fastest and the most reliable user experience, RAPID Mode focuses on improving the random performance with low queue depth and small size data. When frequently used data (hot data) is recognized, RAPID Mode can also enhance the sequential performance as well. However, improvement on sequential performance can vary depending on user scenarios.

Enabling RAPID Mode is very simple – just launch Samsung Magician, click on RAPID Mode and then click Enable – very simple!

CDW-Review-of-the-Samsung-840-EVO-SS[20]

Because of the way RAPID Mode works it will take a while before it really shows results, and as such I can’t comment in this review if it really makes a difference, but in a few months I will take a look again.

Final Thoughts

The Samsung SSD 840 EVO line-up is available in five capacities: 120GB, 250GB, 500GB, 750GB, and 1TB, as well as in mSATA. For this review we had the 1TB mSATA model.

The drive is fast, very fast and work’s very well indeed. In fact it is the fastest SSD I  have ever tried. There are a number of really great features with the drive too!

At the time of writing this review, Samsung had yet to release the final version of their Magician software, so the review was completed using a beta of version 4.2 but I didn’t have any problems with it at all.

I didn’t test out the full disk encryption (FDE) functionality as the motherboard I was using didn’t support it.

RAPID Mode is an interesting addition, and time will tell if it actually brings any benefit, but I certainly like the idea of it.

If you want an easier life and you want to keep all your software and settings I recommend going for one of the upgrade kits with the Data Migration software on – it is quick and works perfectly.

The warranty period on the series 840 EVO drives are 3 years in case you were wondering, but hopefully you will never need it! I have been using Samsung SSD’s for a few years now and so far I haven’t had a single problem with one.

So I cannot rate this SSD highly enough – it is fantastic! It is the best SSD I have ever tested and now is my main drive!

Prices start from £86.99 for the 120GB SSD all the way up to £509.99 for the 1TB model and should be available from today.

Review of the Hauppauge HD PVR Rocket Portable Game Recorder

HD PVR Rocket records video game play from PlayStation, Xbox and PC gaming systems in high definition resolution up to 1080p using H.264 video compression, and here is our review.

CDW Review of the Hauppauge HD PVR Rocket -2

The most notable feature of the Rocket is that it functions independently of a PC, powered by USB from the console or PC.

A press of the red button on the device will begin instant recording onto any size USB flash drive or powered external HDD over HDMI or component in H.264. The same format used by Blu-ray discs providing a crisp image and amazing digital sound. H.264 uses 1/3 of disk space compared to the popular MPEG-2 format – so when a 16 Gbyte USB thumb drive is plugged into the HD PVR Rocket, 4 hours video game play is recorded in full HD.

HD PVR Rocket is the ultimate portable video recorder: it is small enough to fit in your hand and weights just 130 grams and complementing the next generation console’s in-built gameplay sharing features by adding a huge amount of recording flexibility

What’s more, the HD PVR Rocket also has a built-in audio mixer so that gamers can record game commentary along with game audio. The in-built audio mixer will allow the addition of live commentary or background music over game audio by simply attaching a microphone, headset or mp3 player. A touch sensitive control panel situated next to the recording button adjusts the input volume and also features audio-level monitor, bass boost, audio-level lock and mute button.

Technical specifications

  • Hardware encoder:
    • H.264 AVCHD high definition video encoder, video encode up to 1080p30 from HDMI or component video.
  • No delay HDMI pass through:
    • HDMI or component in to HDMI out.

  • Audio mixer:
    • Mixes game audio with microphone audio
    • Supports both powered and unpowered microphones.
    • Microphone volume adjust, +20db boost and mute.
  • Input/output connections:
    • HDMI from Xbox, PC game systems or other HDMI sources without HDCP.
    • Component video in from a PS3 with stereo audio.
    • 3.5mm microphone jack.
    • USB thumb drive connector.
    • HDMI output.
  • Size:
    • 4.75 inches x 3.5 inches x 1.5 inches.
  • Power:
    • 5v @ 0.9 amps
  • Weight: 4.6 oz
  • Bundled with Hauppauge Capture software application:
    • Record your game play to your PC.
    • Record game commentary with game audio.
    • Fast trim.
    • Upload to YouTube.

A Closer Look

The rear of the Rocket has the USB power connector, both HDMI In and Out, and an A/V IN for use with a PlayStation or other component device.

CDW Review of the Hauppauge HD PVR Rocket - 1

The front has a microphone socket and a USB port for connecting the flash drive. It also has an LED band going around the device which glows depending on the state of the Rocket. So for example, if you try to capture HDCP protected content it will blink green, and it will be a solid red when recording.

CDW Review of the Hauppauge HD PVR Rocket -5

On the top of the Rocket is the big red button used to start and stop the capturing. There is also a volume control, a mute button, and boost button to add +20dB and an unlock button to enable you to make selections. All are touch sensitive.

CDW Review of the Hauppauge HD PVR Rocket -6

Using the HD PVR Rocket

Using the HD PVR Rocket is really easy – you just connect it up to whatever you are capturing from using the supplied cables, plug in the USB flash drive, then press the big red button to start the capture. It’s that simple!

Here is a video of it in action:

Final Thoughts

As you can see from the photo at the start of this review, the HD PVR Rocket fits into the palm of your hand. Now of course you also need a USB flash drive and the relevant cables, but the most important feature is that you don’t actually need a computer to actually capture the footage to.

You can use a computer along with the Rocket by using the Hauppauge Capture software, but for me I am happy to just capture the gameplay footage and then drop it into Final Cut Pro and do everything else I need to do there.

Everything you need is included in the box, including an HDMI cable.

Setting up the Rocket was very simple – there are a few more steps if you want to use it on a PlayStation, but those steps are actually on the PlayStation itself, where as using it on an Xbox is as simple as connecting it up and pressing the button.

If you want to do a lot of capturing you need to ensure you use a large USB flash drive. I captured about 9 minutes of footage from an Xbox One running at 1080p and it used a little under 600MB, so I was very happy.

The quality of the capture is perfect, I was actually surprised just how good it was considering the size of the Rocket and that you just plug it in and go!

If you want to do any capturing at all, especially if you want to do that capturing outside of your home, I cannot recommend this highly enough, it’s a fantastic little device that will now be in my bag whenever I go to events, just in case I need it!

The Hauppauge HD PVR Rocket is available now priced at £139.99.

Review: Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition on Xbox One

It seems that whenever a new generation of console comes out it’ll mean that video games developers have a chance to remind us of their past games. We’ve all played our share of classic titles and noticed years later we could replay these same games, sometimes in a bundle with their sequels, with HD graphics and end up forking out full price to relive what we previously enjoyed (with added achievements/trophies). Throughout the Xbox 360 and PS3 lifespan there were numerous ‘HD’ remakes and it seems that our now new generation of
consoles will be treading familiar footsteps. So what makes Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition any different and why should you go out to purchase this title which isn’t even a year old?

Gas_Tunnel4_BH_1389959179

Graphics

If you picked up the Xbox One or the Playstation 4 I think it’s safe to say nothing from the launch line up has looked ground breaking and stunning yet. But we must forgive this as launch titles aren’t the consoles best examples of what power each generation of consoles can show. Playing through Tomb Raider last year was pretty much a visual treat for players on all formats it was available on. We experienced a beautifully textured Lara Croft, battered and bloody, embark through jaw dropping environments which wasn’t all browns and greys.

TRDE_Screenshots_v1_Mathias_8_1390838793

The Definitive Edition is the best looking game currently out on consoles and with the addition of the previously exclusive to PC ‘TressFX’ for Lara’s hair, graphically the game has stepped up since the previous outing. Since both new platforms are powered by AMD APUs getting perks like TressFX might excite those who look towards the intricate details in such
games. Lara’s face isn’t the same as well as her character model too going through some minor adjustments. With more attention to detail in the blood splatter on her body and clothing this truly is the most detailed Tomb Raider will be and it’s noticeable if you’ve compared both versions.

Scav_hub13_1389959182

Gameplay

The difficulty settings haven’t been tweaked and players like myself who looked for a challenge in the Hard mode wouldn’t find this edition any different. That being said, nothing else gameplay-wise has been modified that was noticeable. So if you’re considering a new challenge and have previously played this setting last year expect the exact same play through. Using the Kinect you have several new ways of interacting with the game, all sadly
unnecessary. Shouting, “Go to map” as opposed to pressing the associated button on the control pad is something I found I only did once, intentionally.

BOB SCREENS_DESCENT12_1386846490

Other voice commands include weapon changing which in the heat of battle you might just prefer the quicker option of using the D-pad. You can even get yourself physically moving too by leaning to the left and right to pan the camera in certain moments of the game. After picking up treasure and collectables you can rotate these objects by sticking your hand out in front of you, gripping and rotating it.

In a Game-of-the-year-like fashion you’re also given content that was previously locked from standard versions such as a pre-order bonus tomb now built in straight into this edition. The multiplayer has the ‘Hitman Absolution’ weapon pack, another bit of DLC now free straight out the box and I applaud Square for not squeezing micro transactions into this all rounded complete bundle.

TRDE_Screenshots_v1_Get_Off_Me_4_1390838793

Verdict

This Definitive Edition is aimed towards those that either love the game so much and want to play it again with deeper graphics and/or not minding purchasing another title towards the already limited range of games on this new gen, or just simply didn’t play it the first time round. If the former is you, picking up this game full price isn’t going to be a let down as you’ll be the proud owner of one great looking game loaded with additional content and optional Kinect features which wasn’t available before. If the latter applies to you and this is your first outing to the Tomb Raider revamp then prepare for a high octane adventure.

Spinal Comes to Killer Instinct for Xbox One

0

If you’re already comfortable with Jago, Orchid, or one of the other KI characters already available, why should you give Spinal a spin? The 1.3 GB update should begin downloading as soon as you boot your Xbox One, but you may have to restart if you were online when the update landed. For those who purchased Killer Instinct’s Combo Breaker Pack, Ultra Edition, or Pin Ultimate Edition will be able to play as Spinal. Here is the Producer Torin Rettig list some of Spinal’s best maneuvers:

Killer Instinct

      • Power Devour: A classic Spinal move. Spinal uses his opponent’s attack to power up his own offense. Spinal absorbs opponents’ special moves and turns them into skulls that he can use to curse them. Curses siphon opponents shadow meter or instinct meter and give it to Spinal.
      • Bonerunner: A new and awesome move for Spinal. Whereas most characters can dash forward and back, Spinal has a full on run. With Bonerunner, he can run forward indefinitely and can use any move out of the run that he could if he were standing. It closes the distance on opponents fast and creates tons of pressure for the opponent. He also has an awesome maniacal laugh while running, adding to the fun.
      • Skeleport: Another classic spinal move. Spinal teleports in relation to the opponent based upon the power level of the Skeleport. He can teleport right in front of the opponent, mid distance from the opponent and behind the opponent. Perfect for set-ups, mix-ups and keeping the opponent guessing.
      • Searing Skull: When performed in a combo it trades damage for giving Spinal skulls. When Spinal has skulls Searing Skull fires them at the opponent at various angles and when they hit they curse them. Curses drain shadow meter from the opponent and give it to Spinal, allowing him to turn the tide of battle. Additionally, the shadow version of Searing Skull fires a massive chattering skull that siphons instinct meter from the opponent to Spinal. Both versions of Searing Skull can stack multiple times, increasing the drain.

Wargaming and RAF Museum Expand with Augmented Reality App

WorldofWarplanesLogo

Wargaming has announced the global launch of an augmented reality application drawing focus on the Dornier 17 aircraft currently in exhibition at the RAF Museum in Cosford, Shropshire, United Kingdom.

Working with the Royal Air Force Museum, Wargaming set out in October of 2013 to recover the only known surviving Dornier Do17 aircraft. Success saw the opening of the “Wargaming.net Interpretation Zone” at the RAF Museum, where visitors can examine the aircraft undergoing renovation and learn more of its colorful history and important role during World War II.

The newly launched application, named Apparition, will take that interpretation to a new interactive level using augmented reality to view a virtual version of the aircraft flying over the museum, as well as other historical information.

To celebrate the launch of the Apparition application, both the RAF Museum and Wargaming encourage the public to be the first to view the Dornier 17 in their own part of the world. Scattered around the globe are hundreds of virtual locations where users of the application can view and take photos of their Dornier 17 and upload them online for a chance to have their photo be part of the next Wargaming.net Interpretation Zone, scheduled to launch at the RAF Museum London in 2014.

“As a global games company that specializes in distributing digital content to every corner of the world, we are delighted to partner with the Royal Air Force Museum,” said Tracy Spaight, Special Projects Director at Wargaming. “Taking the Dornier outside the museum walls and bringing it to people all over the world is truly taking this great experience and bringing the museum directly to people around the world.”
