Future Gaming Technology running on the Toshiba Encore Tablet

I was recently invited by Toshiba to visit Inition, an independent gaming production company to see just what the Encore Windows 8.1 tablet was cable of.

Toshiba Encore Initionevent 300114 (14)

Inition was formed 12 years ago and through a finely-tuned blend of technological and creative capabilities, has established itself at the forefront of the development gaming scene.

The Toshiba Encore Tablet

The Windows 8.1 tablet is ideal for consumers and prosumers wanting to move seamlessly between working, playing and sharing on a single device. Its Xbox SmartGlass capability, wide viewing angles and superior screen quality make it ideal for gamers and entertainment junkies alike.

DSC_0909

It has an 8-inch HD touchscreen, 32GB of built-in storage, an 8 megapixel camera, an Intel Atom processor, 2GB ram, weighs less than half a kilo and retails for under £250 – yes, you read that correctly £250!

3D Scanning and Modelling

For this part of the afternoon, we were all scanned by a hand-held device. This scanning process took a couple of minutes and involved the device being moved from one side of our faces to the other. Under normal circumstances the process would be a lot more in-depth, ensuring that there were no areas missed during the scan. The scan could also be in colour if required, but for the sake of time, the scan was taken with a single colour (gold), and without hair!

Toshiba Encore Initionevent 300114 (37)

After the scanning was complete, the file was copied over to the Encore tablet, where it would be easily manipulated with the swipe of a finger.

DSC_0915

I was surprised just how well the Encore dealt with the scan – and also slightly freaked out by seeing myself as a 3D model!

Inition used the same 3D scanning and modelling technology to create the album cover for Robbie William’s latest album Take The Crown. They then took our scans and created our very own album covers – although I don’t sing as well as Robbie!

Virtual Reality with the Oculus Rift

Virtual Reality gaming isn’t anything new, however it’s popularity is taking off again with the Oculus Rift, which is a headset based experience that enables you to play games and experience many new and exciting things.

Toshiba Encore Initionevent 300114 (52)

For this particular demonstration, the Oculus Rift device was connected to the Encore tablet, and a Tusan Villa simulation was created. The Encore took care of all of the graphics processing, the connectivity for the Oculus Rift and all of the tracking data used to interpret were you are looking.

Toshiba Encore Initionevent 300114 (53)

Walking through the Tuscan Villa was a strange experience – one the one hand you know you are sitting on a chair in a studio space, and on the other you really do feel like you are there. I can only imagine what the experience will be like in the coming years when the technology evolves.

As with viewing the 3D model of myself, the Encore really coped well with the VR simulation – in fact, if the Encore hadn’t been sitting there next to me, I am not sure I would have believed it was running it.

Augmented Reality Apps

For this demonstration, the Encore was connected to a large screen monitor using it’s HDMI out. The USB port was used to control a wireless keyboard and mouse, which we used to drive the BMW M7 card, and the webcam was used to film it all.

DSC_0955

This is the what the Encore’s webcam was filming – an open space.

DSC_0956

The software then generates the BMW M7 and the keyboard is then used to drive the car around the “screen”.

DSC_0957

Normally this sort of demonstration would require multiple pieces of kit – a computer, a webcam, and more. All of this (apart from the large screen monitor used to make it easier for us to see the demo) was handled by the Encore.

My biggest take away from the whole experience was that Toshiba Encore was a very powerful device, one that was capable of doing so much more than you would think a small tablet could do – and that is just scratching the surface!

How to build a wireless motion sensor for your Raspberry Pi

Jonathan Evans, the founder of PrivateEyePi has written a tutorial on how to construct a wireless motion sensor and interface it to a Raspberry Pi.

In this tutorial I’ll show you how to construct a wireless motion sensor and interface it to a Raspberry Pi minicomputer. I’ve detailed two options that both work very well and have long lasting battery power consumption. The first option involves hacking a key fob remote that has four buttons. We will use the remote to send a signal every time the motion detector senses motion. The four buttons of the remote gives you the ability to run 4 wireless motion sensors.

The second option uses a much more sophisticated, but low cost, RF transmitter and receiver made by Ciseco. Ciseco have developed firmware that can be loaded onto the RF modules to give them different personalities (temperature sensor, button, hall affect, relay etc…). The XRF is more expensive than the key fob but it offers much better transmission distances that will penetrate walls a lot better than the key fob remote. The XRF also has the ability to send battery levels and operate different networks that give you an almost limitless amount of sensors that can be connected to the Raspberry Pi.

Rough Cost comparison

Quick and dirty Professional
Key fob $7 XRF receiver $17
Momentary receiver $5 XRF transmitter $17
Motion sensor $10 Motion sensor $10
Total $22 Total $44

Motion sensor or passive infrared sensor (PIR)

For the motion sensor I’ve selected the HC–SR501 sensor shown in figure 1. There are a number of these sensor available with varying reliability but I like this particular one because it has three adjustable controls allowing you to fine tune focal distance (3m to 7m) and the amount of time (0.5 seconds to 5 seconds)it waits before a reset. It also has a dip switch for the repeatable trigger mode which will send multiple triggers when motion is detected. It has three pins:

Pin 1 : VCC (DC 4.5-20V)

Pin 2 : Sensor

Pin 3 : Ground

Figure 1

Figure 1 – HC SR01 motion sensor

Wireless option 1 – Quick and dirty

The first option uses an off-the-shelf key fob and receiver as shown in Figure 2. This is going to require a moderate level of electronics because you will need to hack into the key-fob for the electronics required to send the signal. It is available at most online electronic stores. With the receiver at around $5 and key-fob at $7 this is a very cost effective option. There are also other similar cheaper units available that do not have a key-fob (internet search OOK on-off-key RF transmitter/receiver). The reason I’ve chosen the key-fob is because it is battery operated and already optimized for sending a signal from a battery operated device. You can also buy very cheap RF transmitter and receivers, however you will need to develop the transmitter and receiver software which is complex and best avoided if possible.

The key-fob in figure 1 has four buttons so you have four “channels” you can use. That’s useful if you have a room with multiple sensors (door sensors, motion detectors and window sensors). You can wire them all to one transmitter (yes you need wires in the room, but no wires from the room to the receiver).

The receiver has 7 pins.

Pin 1 – GND

Pin 2 – 5V DC power

Pin 3-6 correspond to each button on the key-fob and will go high (5v) when the button for that pin is pressed on the key-fob. We’ll be using these signals to switch a Raspberry Pi GPIO pins.

Pin 7 – ignore

Figure 2

Figure 2 – Key-fob transmitter and receiver

Hack the key-fob

Unscrew the case of the key-fob and examine the contents. Each button will have pads either on the on the opposite side or some on the front that when bridged will send a signal. Use a piece of wire and short circuit a few pads until you find the two pads that associated with a switch. Solder two wires to each pad as per figure 3 and test that it is working by joining the two wires. If the remote’s light goes on when the two wires are joined then it’s working.

Figure 3

Figure 3 – Soldering two wires to the button pads of the key-fob

Now you are ready to connect the key-fob to the motion sensor. Figure 4 is the circuit diagram for the quick and dirty wireless motion sensor transmitter unit. The NPN222a transistor is the electronic switch that closes the circuit of the key-fob when a signal is sent from the out pin of the PIR sensor. The PIR sensor is powered by 2 AA batteries connected in series. The positive lead from the key-fob connects to the collector pin of the transistor and the negative lead from the key-fob connects to ground. The key-fob is powered by its own internal battery. Figure 5 is a close up of the transistor as it is very easy to mix up the collector and emitter on a transistor.

Figure 4

Figure 4 – Quick and dirty wireless motion sensor transmitter

Figure 5

Figure 5 – NPN 2222a transistor

Figure 6 shows the electronic circuit for the receiver. It is powered by a 5V DC power source. When a button on the key-fob is pressed the receiver will send 5V to one of the 4 signal pins (corresponding to the 4 button on the key-fob). The Raspberry Pi needs 3V on the GPIO pins so we will use the NPN 2222a transistor to switch a 3V circuit connected to one of the GPIO pins on the Raspberry Pi.

Warning: Be careful not to connect 5V to any of the Raspberry Pi GPIO pins!

There is a 10k pull up resistor that will set the GPIO pin high when the key-fob is not pressed and low when the key-fob is pressed.

Maisie Williams talks about Game of Thrones Season 4

At an event for the launch of the box set, Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark talked about Season 4 of Game of Thrones.

UK_GOT_S3_SD_VIVA_PREM_3D_thumb2

In the third season of the hit HBO original series based on the bestselling book series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. This epic drama is set in the grounded fantasy continent of Westeros, where ambitious men and women of both honor and ill-repute live in a land where summers and winters can last years. In Season 3, family and loyalty will be the overarching themes, and many critical plot points from the first two seasons will come to a violent head, with several major characters meeting cruel fates. While a primary focus continues to be on King’s Landing, where the Lannisters barely held onto power after a savage naval onslaught from Stannis Baratheon, stirrings in the North threaten to alter the overall balance of power in Westeros. Robb Stark, King of the North, will face a major calamity in his efforts to build on his victories over the Lannisters in Season 2, while further north, Mance Rayder (new character) and his huge army of wildlings begin an inexorable march south to scale the Wall. Across the Narrow Sea, Daenerys Targaryen – reunited with her three deadly, fast-maturing dragons – attempts to raise an army of slaves to sail with her from Essos to Westeros, in hopes of eventually overthrowing the Iron Throne.

Review : Dead Rising 3 – Fallen Angel DLC

1392151493-dead-rising-3-fallen-angel

The Untold Stories DLC continues and in Episode 2 we get to kill some more zombies, this time playing as Angel Quijano, the feisty South American female protagonist. What separates Angel from you generic tough female leads out there is the fact that she’s an alcoholic, which I must say is a first to my recollection. ‘Fallen Angel’ opens with the same introduction video that explains the mysterious Big Brother-like figure has been watching the four DLC characters. Angel falls under the “Redemption” tagline this time and opens with Doug, the leader of the resistance survivors, ordering you lay of the booze.

Starting out in a barricaded school you’re tasked with investigating why the Spec Ops are killing non-infected survivors from the city and challenged with destroying surveillance cameras as part of the main side mission. Within the first 20 minutes I had questioned whether this episode was going to just be similar to the previous episode and have us running around doing pointless chores but this all became fun when I came across some of the new DLC weapons. Mixing medical deliberators and an assault rifle creates the incredibly over powered Shockblaster gun that instantly kills zombies, anything nearby and works at incredible range. But the award for the most dangerously dominant firearm in the DLC so far goes to the Machine Pistols that literally lets you run and gun with assisted auto aim with the
ability to clear out the densest of hordes. Having these weapons is a must but also makes this episode much easier.

Dead-Rising-3-DLC-Fallen-Angel

The story does however pick up when you have to do some actual investigating searching for clues as to who are killing your people and for what reason, but other than that it’s still Dead Rising 3 and there’s things that still need to be sliced, diced and blown up. I’d honestly say after playing through this episode twice I struggle to pull out a great memorable moments and has quickly become forgettable. It is literally a series of fetching quests and clearing out zombies and Spec Ops tasks tied together with Doug’s consistent dialogue of reminding you to not get carried away with drinking and focus on the mission. To be fair having a partner like Doug would drive me to do quite the opposite to what he says just to drown out hearing how terrible I’ve now become, consumed by alcohol because the city is now infested by the undead.

Now only halfway through the Untold Stories I get the impression that the remaining episodes could potentially be another copy and pasted set of missions with a new skin but same tasks. I hope I’m proved wrong. For the asking price of £8 outside of the Season Pass I’d say it’s an expensive hour of additional content and perhaps buy it in a bundle.
