MKX_GamescomScreenshot_KanoScorpion

Mortal Kombat X is NetherRealm Studios’ next highly anticipated installment in its legendary, critically acclaimed fighting game franchise that propels the iconic franchise into a new generation. The game combines cinematic presentation with all new gameplay to deliver the most brutal Kombat experience ever, offering a new fully-connected experience that launches players into a persistent online contest where every fight matters in a global battle for supremacy.  For the first time, Mortal Kombat X gives players the ability to choose from multiple variations of each character impacting both strategy and fighting style. Players step into an original story showcasing some of the game’s most prolific characters including Scorpion and Sub-Zero, while introducing new challengers that represent the forces of good and evil and tie the tale together.

New and Klassic Characters: Featuring Klassics such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden and Kano, as well as new characters such as Cassie Cage, Kotal Kahn, Ferra-Torr and D’Vorah, the roster will include fan favorites where both good and evil must battle it out.

Character Variations: Mortal Kombat X offers three different versions for each playable character, all of which have their own fighting style, special moves, abilities and strategies. The Variation that players choose affects the style and overall strategy by which the game is played.

Epic, Cinematic Storyline: A deep story mode continues up to 25 years after the events of 2011’s Mortal Kombat and advances the dark tale – introducing new characters such as Cassie Cage, daughter of fan favorites Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage.

Visceral Kombat: Mortal Kombat X introduces the next evolution of fighting with the return of X-ray and Finishing Moves that showcase brutal battles like never before with enhanced graphics and animations.

Exclusive interview with Bedlam author Christopher Brookmyre and Nick Witcher at Gamescom

At Gamescom, I sat down with Christopher Brookmyre and Nick Witcher to talk about Bedlam.

bedlam_a2_poster_capped_notxt_thumb_

Bedlam is adapted from the novel by Christopher Brookmyre, but diverges from the original in this change of protagonist. The novel’s hero, Ross Baker, does feature prominently in the game, but the switch to a female lead – who is a gamer and sci-fi fan – offered a fresh and bitingly humorous new perspective upon the “gameverse” that the player will explore.

Over to Chris and Nick (and there’s some new gameplay in there too):

Bedlam will be released on PC later this year.

Review : MadCatz C.T.R.L.r Mobile Gamepad

More people play games on their mobile devices, and MadCatz have released the C.T.R.L.r Mobile Gamepad and here is our review.

CDW Review MadCatz CTRLr - 29

Mad Catz’ C.T.R.L.R Mobile Gamepad with Bluetooth technology removes the need for fingers and thumbs to block your touchscreen during mobile gaming. A highly capable game controller at home and also while on the move, C.T.R.L.R provides traditional gamepad controls with physical action and shoulder buttons, D-Pad, and analogue sticks. When paired with Mad Catz’ downloadable configuration app, you can adjust profiles and settings to customize C.T.R.L.R for an expansive list of controller-compatible videogames. And, the included AAA batteries provide energy for up to 40 hours of continuous control over your favourite games, apps, and media.

Who are Mad Catz?

From their website:

Mad Catz Interactive is a global provider of innovative interactive entertainment products marketed under its Mad Catz (gaming), Tritton (audio), and Saitek (simulation) brands. Mad Catz also develops flight simulation software through its internal ThunderHawk Studios; publishes games under its Mad Catz brand; and distributes games and videogame products for third parties.

What’s in the Box?

The box contains the C.T.R.L.R gamepad, travel clip, plus manuals, stickers and a set of AAA batteries.

A Closer Look

The first thing you will notice about the C.T.R.L.R gamepad is that it looks very similar to an Xbox 360 controller. Gamers should immediately feel at home holding it, as it feels nice and robust in your hands.

CDW Review MadCatz CTRLr - 8

The C.T.R.L.R has three separate modes which are selected via a switch. These include a “mouse mode” which enables the left stick to control the cursor on the screen, as though it were a mouse.

CDW Review MadCatz CTRLr - 9

There are also media playback controls situated on the top of the C.T.R.L.R which include play, pause and mute.

CDW Review MadCatz CTRLr - 30CDW Review MadCatz CTRLr - 10

Fitting the batteries is simple, as you would expect.

CDW Review MadCatz CTRLr - 16

There is also a travel clip included in the box which enables you to connect up your smartphone to the C.T.R.L.R so that you can pretty much play games wherever you want.

CDW Review MadCatz CTRLr - 13CDW Review MadCatz CTRLr - 14

Fitting the travel clip was very easy.

CDW Review MadCatz CTRLr - 18CDW Review MadCatz CTRLr - 19

Then fitting your phone or other device into the clip is also very easy, and the clip really does hold it in there tightly, so you shouldn’t have to worry about it flying out if you are really playing hard!

CDW Review MadCatz CTRLr - 22

Pairing was very simple and quick.

CDW Review MadCatz CTRLr - 28

Final Thoughts

You might recall our review of the MadCatz M.O.J.O. that also included a C.T.R.L.R – the one in this review is a newer version than the one included with the M.O.J.O.

I liked the feel of the C.T.R.L.R – it really did remind me in both look and feel of the Xbox 360 controller, but with more functionality.

And the inclusion of the travel clip means that you a device such as a smartphone and thus create your own little gaming rig. Of course you don’t have to do that, you can always connect the C.T.R.L.R via Bluetooth to whatever you want to use for gaming.

It also uses Bluetooth 4.0 technology to ensure lag free gaming, and believe me the last thing you want if you are playing a game is lag!  And talking of Bluetooth, pairing the C.T.R.L.R was simple and incredibly fast.

You also get around 40 hours of playtime out of a single set of AA batteries, so that’s really good too, although it would have been better to have included a rechargeable battery instead. Talking of batteries, there is no visible way to know when the batteries are running low so that can be a little annoying if you are in the middle of a game.

The MadCatz A.P.P. desktop software enables the creation of game-specific macro profiles which helps with your PC gaming needs.

Because the C.T.R.L.R is shiny it really does pick up every fingerprint and smudge, it’s not really a problem though, but I know some people like their controllers pristine.

MadCatz are currently listing the C.T.R.L.R as £33.33 on their website – so if you play mobile games and want a decent controller, go get this one today.

Review : Livescribe Smartpen 3

If you have ever wanted your hand written notes to be available on your iPad then you might want to take a look at the Livescribe Smartpen 3 – and here is our review.

LS3_sceneA_journal_n_ipad

Livescribe is a global leader in the design and manufacturing of smartpens, enabling customers to capture, search and share handwritten notes on digital devices from desktops to smartphones. Livescribe makes the only smartpens on the market that synchronize handwritten notes with recorded audio, making the ubiquitous pen more useful in today’s world. Livescribe’s family of smartpens include the Echo smartpen, the Sky wifi smartpen and the Livescribe 3 smartpen, with complementary software for each platform.

Designed as a mobile companion, Livescribe 3 is a sleek, simplified smartpen paired with Livescribe+, a powerful iOS 7 app created to organize information and turn notes into useful actions. Set up will only take a few seconds and then you’ll be able to start syncing your notes to your iPhone or iPad, where they can be organized, tagged, searched, converted into text and shared

Features

  • Simply write on Livescribe paper and the smartpen captures all your notes. Pair and connect your Livescribe 3 with your iPhone or iPad and your notes instantly appear in Livescribe+.
  • Convert handwritten notes into text to create tasks, reminders, calendar events, contacts or more.
  • Create audio “pencasts,” or add photos and typed memos inside Livescribe+ to add more detail and additional context to your written notes.
  • Tag your notes in Feed view to create Collections that sort all your tagged content together.
  • Livescribe 3 uses low-energy Bluetooth Smart to connect to any iPhone 4S, 3rd-gen iPad or 5th-gen iPod touch (or newer devices with iOS 7) to deliver more than 14 hours of battery life.

What’s in the Box?

The box contains everything you need to get started, including the Smartpen (with ink), a notebook, cable and a basic guide.

CDW Review Livescribe Smartpen 3 - 1CDW Review Livescribe Smartpen 3 - 3

A Closer Look

The Livescribe Smartpen looks and feels like a normal pen, well that’s because it is a normal pen, although it is a little chunkier than pens you might be used to writing with.

It has an ink nib (which has a protective plastic cap on when you take it out of the box.

CDW Review Livescribe Smartpen 3 - 18

When the ink runs out you can just remove it and replace it with another Livescribe ink. All this is very simple to do and doesn’t involve you having to take the pen apart, you just slide out the old ink and slide in the new one.

CDW Review Livescribe Smartpen 3 - 20

Charging the Livescribe Smartpen is as easy as removing the top of the pen and connecting the USB cable.

CDW Review Livescribe Smartpen 3 - 21

Using the Livescribe Smartpen

The first thing you need to do is pair your iOS device to your new smartpen – so once you have downloaded and installed the Livescribe+ app from the app store, just twist the middle ring on the pen to power it on and then the iOS device (in my case my iPad mini) will detect it automatically.

IMG_0127

Just tap Pair and it’s as simple as that. There might be some firmware updates to do, but don’t worry, they are very quick and easy.

IMG_0134

You can now start making notes in the notebook.

Livescribe0944

The notes are then available in the app, and you can even use handwriting recognition to turn your notes in text which you can then use in another application.

Livescribe _recognizes_text3

The notebook also has a number of images on the bottom of each page. As you can see here, there is a image for Record, Pause and Stop. These are used to create Pencasts, which are interactive documents containing audio that is syncronised to your handwritten notes. The audio is recorded using the microphone on your iOS device rather than from the smartpen.

CDW Review Livescribe Smartpen 3 - 16

Here you can see an example:

ls _pencast

You can also easily tag your notes to create collections to easily find similar things.

CDW Review Livescribe Smartpen 3 - 17

Final Thoughts

As someone who takes a lot of notes, I found the Livescribe Smartpen 3 to be a really useful tool that saved me a lot of time, and effort! I really liked the ability to be able to record audio as well and include that within my notes, again saving me a lot of time and effort when collating my notes.

You can use any iOS device, although I found it easier to use an iPad rather than my iPhone when going through my outputs – but it still worked great on the iPhone.

Within the box, you have a notebook and the pen already has an ink cartridge, but depending on how much you intend to use the device you will wait to order some additional books and cartridges to have ready for when you need them. You can also print your own paper for use with the smartpen too!

It took me a little while to get used to writing with the smartpen, primarily because it is a lot chunkier than any pen I have used before for writing with, although you will get used to it!

Setting up the LIvescribe+ app and pairing the smartpen was simple and only took a few moments – no mucking around in the settings, everything was done in the app for me.

I was also very happy with the battery life on the smartphone – it delivers around 14 hours per charge which should be more than enough for the average day.

There are different views in the app for your notes – Page view which shows you exactly what your wrote and how you wrote it, Feed view which sorts your notes into a timeline view, and Pencast view.

I also found the handwriting recognition, provided using a version of MyScript, to be very good and easy to use.

Sharing my notes was very easy too – I could send them as PDFs, images, or text, depending on my target audience. I could also use Online services such as Evernote and Dropbox very easily from within the app.

All in all, if you are the type of person who takes a lot of notes in meetings, at school or at university, then the Livescribe Smartpen 3 may be one of the best bits of tech you buy.

The Livescribe 3 Smartpen is available in two versions the regular at £129.99or Pro Edition, priced at £169.99 which includes a leather smartpen portfolio.

Livescribe smartpens might be just what you need for electronic notetaking

If you’re a student swamped with stacks of folders and sheets of copious notes, or if you’re about to go to University for the first time and want get the most out of your lectures – a Livescribe smartpen can help ensure you never miss – or lose – a word. Often in classes or seminars you desperately try to simultaneously listen and make notes.

LS3_sceneF_pen_iPhone_diagram

The Livescribe smartpen is the solution: every single page, paragraph and scribble backed-up on your computer, safe from loss or damage, searchable for key words at a later date and, even better, the ability to tap on any part of your writing and hear exactly what was being said in your class or lecture at that moment in time.

It also helps you learn smarter. Researchers at Princeton University found that students who handwrite their notes process information more deeply than laptop note takers who primarily transcribe what they hear. As a result, capturing notes with pen and paper leads to better performance on tests, especially those tests that require a conceptual understanding of the material

Livescribe smartpen has a family of smartpens cost little more than a good voice recorder but add far more value to your learning world. You can choose from the Livescribe 3, wifi or Echo smartpen:

clip_image002

The latest smartpen from Livescribe utilises and exploits the power of Apple iOS and is a perfect partner to an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch (iPad 3 or newer, iPhone 4S or newer, iPod Touch 5th Gen)

Designed by a pen designer this smartpen resembles and feels like a high end writing instrument. The pen syncs to the Livescribe+ App – available free from the Apple Apps store via Bluetooth LE. Once connected your paper notes upload to the App and are stored on your device. If you are connected to your device while taking notes you can capture and link audio to your notes. The audio is recorded on the device and uses the enhanced audio recording that Apple devices offer. Your notes will appear in on screen as you write on paper

clip_image004

The Livescribe Echo smartpen is great for heavy note-takers. Every single page, paragraph and scribble backed-up on your computer, safe from loss or damage, searchable for key words at a later date and, even better, the ability to tap on any part of your writing and hear exactly what was being said in your lecture at that moment in time.

The Echo has free Livescribe Desktop desktop software for data backup. Users simply plug the pen in to the PC via USB to automatically upload and save data.

Livescribe Desktop even enables users key word search for documents, the creation of custom notebooks to help organise notes, the creation of e-mail attachments of your notes called Pencast PDF’s.

clip_image006

This smartpen utilises the power of wifi, cloud based technology and the great note taking software of Evernote. Users take notes and audio with paper and when connected to a known wifi network, your notes and audio will automatically leave the pen, pass through the cloud and arrive in your Evernote account. Once in Evernote you can then organise and share your notes. Evernote can be accessed from nearly any devise and is format agnostic. A truly mobile platform.

Two Minute Review: Sony PS Vita CitySlicker Case from Waterfield Designs

It’s time for another two minute review, and this one is for the Sony PS Vita CitySlicker Case from Waterfield Designs.

CDW Review Sony PS Vita CitySlicker Case - 2

We have reviewed a number of products from Waterfield Designs in the past, including MacBook Air cases and even bags, and so we thought it was time to review something a little smaller, and hope that we could get the same sort of quality and protection for our Vita.

This is how Waterfield Designs describe the case:

“The slim PS Vita CitySlicker is probably the best-looking case out there for your PS Vita or PS Vita Slim. Made of sturdy ballistic nylon and leather, it’s custom-fitted for your device and provides pockets for commonly-played games you may want to take along. The cushy interior hugs the PS Vita so it doesn’t jostle around. The exterior sports a double-layer leather flap that enriches its look. The back of the case has a stretchable, self-locking zippered pocket to hold more games and ear-buds.”

A Closer Look

The back part of the case has a very easy to use zip which opens up the rear compartment.

CDW Review Sony PS Vita CitySlicker Case - 3

You can easily store your earbuds or something else in the back as it is quite stretchy.

CDW Review Sony PS Vita CitySlicker Case - 4

Even with the Vita in the case it still is quite small.

CDW Review Sony PS Vita CitySlicker Case - 10

When you open up the front flap you have access to the main compartment and also cartridge holders.

CDW Review Sony PS Vita CitySlicker Case - 5

Using the Case

It is very easy to slip your Vita into the main compartment.

CDW Review Sony PS Vita CitySlicker Case - 7

And the same goes for the cartridge holders. There are only five but you could always store some in the back.

CDW Review Sony PS Vita CitySlicker Case - 8

Final Thoughts

Having reviewed a number of Waterfield Design products in the past, I was expecting a certain level of quality, and I wasn’t disappointed. The case is very well made, and feels very good in your hands, it is also very lightweight but at the same time is gives your Vita a lot of protection for when you are carrying it around in your bag.

The front flap opens and closes very easily and locks in place with two studs – it won’t open on it’s own so you don’t need to worry about something falling out! The back has a large zip and you can store whatever you want there, as long as its small. I stored my earbuds there and it didn’t detract from the look of the case.

The front also has five cartridge holders and again these are very secure, so you won’t be losing anything from in there! The Vita slides in very easily into the pouch and is held there very securely.

Overall I was once again very impressed with the amount of effort Waterfield Designs has put into their work, this really is the Vita case to own.

The Sony PS Vita CitySlicker Case is available now in Black, Kiwi, Orange, Camel and Grizzly (which is the one we are reviewing here) and costs $49.

To commemorate this occasion, leading Hollywood collectibles auction site ScreenBid will host an online auction of more than 1,500 props, set decoration items, wardrobe pieces and other memorabilia straight from the set of True Blood. Launching on Wednesday, 20 August, the auction will run for five days and close on Monday, 25 August, the night after the beloved series airs its final episode.

In this one-time online auction, True Blood’s dedicated fans will be able to bid for a massive array of items from set, including the following:

· Wardrobe pieces from several major characters from the series

· Signed memorabilia

Mixing romance, suspense, mystery and humour, True Blood takes place in a world where vampires and humans co-exist, after vampires have come out of the coffin, thanks to the invention of mass-produced synthetic blood that means they no longer need humans as a nutritional source. The series follows waitress and part-faerie Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who can hear people’s thoughts, vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) and vampire Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård). Alan Ball (creator of the Emmy-winning HBO series Six Feet Under) created the show, which is executive produced by Brian Buckner and based on the bestselling Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris.
