Ninja Theory working on Disney Infinity 2.0

0

Today the UK developer Ninja Theory is helping Disney with the development of the combat in Disney Infinity 2.0. It was announced at the Giant Bomb PAX panel, and then later confirmed on Twitter, by the Disney Infinity executive producer John Vignocchi said that the developer is the latest team to join the platform.

Ninja Theory Logo

Talking about the game developer Ninja Theory on Twitter, Vignocchi said, “They have been working with us since February and are like family to our team at Avalanche and Disney.” And at the panel he said that Ninja Theory has primarily focused on battle systems for villains like Loki, Green Goblin, and Ronan.

Also Ninja Theory helped with the mechanism behind Jasmine, which including an ability to summon sand tornados (I can’t wait to see that).

Ninja Theory at this years Gamescom, Ninja Theory also revealed that they’re working on a new original game titled Hellblade.

First Look: Hellraid

0

Running on a brand new Techland developed engine, Hellraid is a new IP from the same people who’ve brought us Dead Island and the upcoming Dying Light. At Gamescom this year, I got access to a behind closed doors screening of the new hack n’ loot-er.

Reminiscent, in appearance, of the hand to hand combat in the Elder Scrolls series, Hellraid offers up some good old brutal, first person melee action. Following a soldier who’s abandoned his post in search of both his family and answers, Hellraid takes you on a gruesome trek through dazzling vistas, procedural dungeons and hordes of hellish enemies.

hellraid_screenshot02_gamescom

Whilst at a glance, the combat may resemble a trip into Skyrim’s world, in motion, it quickly becomes clear that there is much more going on under the hood. On top of being able to wield all manners of death instruments from maces to staves, there is also an underlying feeling of weight during each swing and hammer blow. Decapitations and limb dismemberment occur often enough to still be entertaining, yet rare enough to be something to look forward too. According to the developers, it’s not only sword wielding lunatics that get all the fun either; as those who love the ranged staff attacks are also able to lop limbs off.

Whilst facing off against multiple enemies, the evasive dodge proved invaluable; with correct timing, could be used in conjunction with heavy attacks to exploit the enemies speed. Upon encountering a ranged archer, the video depicted the player selecting an upgrade from the mesmerising skill tree, to equip a shield. According to the devs, the game has over 100 upgrades to work yourself through, ranging from passive abilities such as magic resistance, to more active skills that could alter your playstyle.

hellraid_screenshot03_gamescom

Like all good RPG’s, Hellraid possesses a loot system to handle any weapon cravings you might have, upgrades can not only affect the statistical natures, but also can be enchanted with other effects too. Combined with the character levels and procedural dungeons, I’m hoping that the game will have extensive longevity written all over it.

Whilst the demo on show did have some repeating enemy animations, particularly when fighting multiple renditions of the same enemy type, we’ve still got until 2015 for the Techland to sort out any technical issues. Running their new engine has certainly paid dividends in terms of graphical fidelity. The surrounding landscapes and texture details looked astounding; the sound effects sound suitably meaty too.

As one of my favourite games from the event, 2015 can’t come quickly enough; I truly can’t wait to get my hands on it.

First Look: Dream

0

This year at Gamescom I was fortunate enough to get hands on with HyperSloth’s Dream, a first person, narratively open ended, puzzle game. Before getting hands/eyes on with the Oculus Rift enabled Dream, I was given a quick rundown of the features, ideals and elements in the game.

dream 2

Enter Howard Phillips; with no direction in life he turns to his dreams to help find answers. Starting out in a hauntingly empty house, the progressive narrative opens up with subtle cues for investigation, such as the stack of unopened letters amassing at the door. Clambering into bed will transport you into a hub-like world where exploration will be your companion. Multiple endings are dependent upon on how well you navigate and explore your surroundings; on top of accessing hidden, side mission type areas, so a keen eye for thoroughness is key.

A large, open desert area was the first port of call in our dreamlike state, housing weird and wonderful puzzles along with collectibles-a-plenty. A persistent inventory ensures that backtracking through previous locales can also be beneficial too. After getting to grips with the excellent Oculus Rif in a large garden, complete with mysterious enigmas, I was let loose upon a room reminiscent of M. C. Escher’s famous Relativity lithograph. After climbing the myriad of staircases and reaching the top, a small jump, quite literally, proved to be my downfall; forcing a sarcastic repeat trek, much to the amusement of the attending developer…

dream 1

Despite the game’s overall appeal due to the different gameplay styles on offer, there are other unique draws that will draw interest too. The fact you can complete the game without visiting every area; and the Metroid-esque revisiting of previous locations will excite those who love to scavenge every corner of the map. Expect the maps to “be saturated with secrets and puzzles” upon release later in the year too. It seems like length won’t be an issue either, what with simply rushing through the game taking around four hours and discovering all there is to offer, easily doubling that amount.

From what was on show, the game’s certainly shaping up well with a high level of fidelity shown across the board. The uniqueness of the various locations on offer combined with the excellent soundtrack penned by Norman Legies comes together to create an immersive experience; that’s further boosted by the integration of the Oculus Rift; I can’t wait to play through the full release.

Total War: Rome II – Emperor Edition Announced

0

SEGA has today announced Total War: ROME II – Emperor Edition, the definitive edition of the best-selling game in the Total War series from Creative Assembly.

TWRII_EE_Campaign_MarcAntony_1409136779

Emperor Edition collects together all free content to date, which includes wide-ranging revisions, additions to game features and adds a brand new Campaign Pack expansion, ‘Imperator Augustus’. Most importantly, existing ROME II players will receive all of the above content via automatic update on the day of launch, upgrading them to Emperor Edition at no cost.

The new ‘Imperator Augustus’ Campaign Pack adds hundreds of hours of sandbox gameplay across a new campaign map reflecting the geopolitical boundaries of the Second Triumvirate War. Players will determine the outcome of a vast civil war, which saw Octavian, Marc Antony and Lepidus vying to become the very first Emperor of Rome.

TWRII_EE_Battle_RomeVRome2_1409136777

Alongside all feature updates from launch (including Twitch.tv integration, touch controls, new factions, new units and now the Mac version), Emperor Edition also features an improved politics system, overhauled building chains, rebalanced battles, and improved visuals in both campaign and battle. Mike Simpson, Creative Director of the Total War team, said: “ROME II was far and away our most ambitious game. We see more people playing, and playing for longer, than any other game in the Total War series. However, we take our players’ feedback very seriously.

Through the multitude of improvements and free content updates we’ve brought to ROME II since its launch, we’ve worked hard to try and meet their expectations. We want Emperor Edition to be remembered as one of our finest games.” The design of Emperor Edition was led by Jack Lusted, Development Lead of CA’s New Content Team. “With the Imperator Augustus Campaign Pack, we wanted to recreate the vast civil war which erupted after Julius Caesar’s murder”, said Lusted. “You can tackle the campaign as various Roman and non-Roman factions, including Armenia for the first time. Our aim was to represent the titanic power struggle that led to Octavian becoming the first Emperor of Rome. It’s a pretty epic campaign, and it’s great that we can offer this to existing ROME II players for free as a thanks for their support”.

First Look: Civilization: Beyond Earth

0

It’s difficult to imagine what could be added to Civilization V for the next instalment. Especially after the massive amount of content added with ‘Gods and Kings’ and ‘Brave New World’. In fact there’s so much stuff in Civ V that I still play even now. So the obvious choice I guess is to change the period and beyond Earth does just that. Rather than starting without even basic tools Beyond Earth will see players start in a modern era and expand far into the future.

The gameplay I saw was around turn 250 which is just about long enough to establish a solid empire and have plenty of technology researched. Visually a lot has changed. Farms are now vibrant, angular shapes randomly scattered across the map. Walkers and vertical tanks have replaced conventional units. It all looks refreshingly new but it’s still very clear this is Civ.

The infamous hexagonal tiles are still at the foundations of the map although now they’re much more angular than before. Combat is handled much the same, aside from the very different units. Almost everything is comfortingly ‘Civ-ey’. However, one of the biggest changes to Beyond Earth is research. Instead of Civ V’s research tree which basically saw every nation needing all researches by the endgame we’re going to have to choose. It is apparently “almost impossible to acquire all research in a single game”. Unfortunately I didn’t get intimate with the tech tree but I was able to see the size and scale of it. And it was massive. It’s going to add a great new layer of tactics to Civ and make research far more meaningful rather than just a case of getting as many research points as possible to ‘win the race’.

The maps are mimicking the tech tree too and have got even bigger. I never particularly felt the need for bigger maps in Civ but hey it’s certainly not going to hurt. Especially given the different victory conditions. For instance if you play as humans one of your victory conditions will/can be to help the survivors of earth find a new home. Or to make contact with an alien race. The new victory conditions should really change things up and of course domination is still an option for the warmongers among us.

Improved AI will supposedly make diplomacy more important. I wasn’t given too much detail but there’s a favour system that allows you to do a kind deed for another player and then cash in the favour at a later date. Hopefully there will be an actual sense of friends and enemies rather than people throwing around denouncements just because they feel like it.

Beyond Earth looks like it won’t disappoint Civ fans. A few new features, some improvements and bigger maps and tech trees should really breath new life into Civ. Civilization: Beyond Earth is due for worldwide release on October 24th.
