Today Three UK launches the VoLTE network

0

Today Three has announced a new technology, named 4G Super-Voice.

Based on a roll-out of low frequency 800 MHz spectrum it allows a mobile signal to travel much further into buildings and extends its reach to more rural areas, removing many of the current coverage ‘blackspots’ across the country.

Customers will be able to make calls, send texts and get online in places that previously had poor or no signal.

3-three-logo-580-75.jpg

4G Super-Voice is made possible by the addition of the low frequency spectrum to the Three network, that will enable its 4G network to carry voice calls using VoLTE technology as well as texts and data. Three is the first UK operator to launch VoLTE technology.

The combination of both lower and the higher frequency spectrum (1800MHz) which Three currently uses means customers will benefit from the advantages of each, meaning improved indoor coverage, less blackspots and better call connections.

The enhancement is the latest initiative in our drive to improve indoor coverage which includes adding new sites to the network and launching our WiFi calling application, Three InTouch, last year.

4G Super-Voice already covers 50% of the UK population for indoor coverage and more than three quarters of London, Edinburgh, Exeter and Birmingham. This is combined with our 3G network which already offers 98% outdoor UK population coverage.

Three has also begun rolling out the technology in many other towns and cities across the country including Cardiff, Manchester, Liverpool and Bristol.

By the end of the year it will extend to 65% nationwide, meaning millions of our customers will soon benefit from improved coverage indoors, in rural areas, and on public transport.

By 2017, Three UK expect up to 5.5 million Three customers could have access to 4G Super Voice, subject to device compatibility and take up.

Director of customer strategy, Danny Dixon, said:

“Not being able to use your phone as and when you want, no matter where you are, is one of the biggest pain points for customers. Today’s announcement is the latest step in our efforts to offer customers a quality experience on what is already the UK’s most reliable network.”

Bryn Jones, chief technology officer at Three, added:

“By the end of the year, one million of our customers will have access to better indoor coverage and be able to use their phones in more places than ever before. We are proud to be the first network to roll this out across the country.”

Customers require a compatible handset to access the new technology which will be available on the Samsung Galaxy S5 at launch. New devices will be added regularly including recent iPhone models later this year.

The customer simply needs to update the software on their compatible device to the latest version to access 4G Super-Voice completely free of charge. When the update is ready for a customer’s handset an alert will be sent, notifying them to update their operating system, by following the on-screen instructions.

A brief history of US Hip Hop on the TV drama Empire

Released on DVD/Blu-Ray today (14th September) the hit TV drama Empire tells the story of a family dynasty at the pinnacle of a powerful hip hop corporation.

While hip hop culture encompasses a variety of stylistic components including breakdancing and graffiti, it is the MCs, rappers and DJs that provide the musical soundtrack behind this cultural phenomenon and Empire’s first season is peppered with musical performances and cameo appearances from some of the genre’s biggest names including Snoop Dogg and Mary J Blige.

Empire cover

Born out of the Bronx in the 1970s, hip hop has gained millions of fans and established cultural significance around the world. We’d like to take you on a whistle-stop tour of some hip hop’s defining moments from the past four decades.

1970’s

The roots of hip hop can be found in the block parties that took place in the neighbourhoods of the South Bronx where teenagers would take melodies and beats from existing records and combine them with their own words and rhymes, chronicling their lives and battling their peers.

DJ Kool Herc is widely regarded as the Godfather of hip hop and was one of the first DJs to use two turntables. He created the blueprint for hip hop culture and his apartment at 1520 Sedgewick Avenue has even been recognised by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation as the birthplace of hip hop.

Sugarhill Gang

Released in 1979, Sugarhill Gang’s ‘Rapper’s Delight’ was one of the first rap records to gain mainstream popularity. Blondie’s ‘Rapture’ was released the same year and was the first major single by a white artist to feature elements of hip hop.

1980’s

Grand Master Flash is credited as being the first DJ to use scratching and cutting techniques. His single ‘The Message’, released in 1982, was one of the first hip hop songs to address social issues in its lyrics, paving the way for artists like Run DMC and Public Enemy whose lyrical content was also firmly rooted in the real world.

Founder of the Universal Zulu Nation Afrika Bambaataa was another hugely influential figure in hip hop. His 1982 single ‘Planet Rock’ fused electronic sounds and samples with hip hop, kickstarting the diversification of hip hop into a whole host of musical sub-genres.

The mid 1980’s to the early 1990s is regarded by many as hip hop’s golden age with a far more diverse range of artists emerging, including Public Enemy, Eric B & Rakim, De La Soul, Gang Starr, Beastie Boys and A Tribe Called Quest.

1990’s

Hip hop’s popularity continued to explode with records such as Tone Loc’s ‘Wild Thing’ and Public Enemy’s ‘Fight The Power’ among the standout singles. The decade also witnessed the birth of one of hip hop’s most controversial styles, Gangsta Rap, bristling with angry lyrics that reflected the violent inner-city lifestyles lived by many of the artists that performed it. The first blockbuster gangsta rap album was N.W.A’s ‘Straight Outta Compton’. N.W.A. member Dr Dre went on to create a new style called G-Funk which was popularised by artists such as Snoop Dogg and Warren G.

MC Hammer

The more mainstream commercial face of hip hop continued to grow with MC Hammer becoming one of most successful rappers of the 1990s along with Vanilla Ice whose ‘Ice Ice Baby’ became the first hip hop single to top the US Billboard Charts.

The latter part of the decade saw artists such as the Wu-Tang Clan, Diddy and the Fugees come to prominence and brought continued success for the Beastie Boys.

2000’s

The new millennium saw Dr Dre moving to the other side of the mixing desk to produce some of hip hop’s most successful albums for artists such as Eminem and 50 Cent.

However it was Jay-Z’s rise from artist to label president to global brand that underlined hip hop’s ongoing cultural impact. Jay Z also broke Elvis Presley’s record for the most number one albums on the Billboard charts by a solo artist.

Jay Z

No surprise, then, that Empire writer Danny Strong says that Jay-Z’s story had a strong influence on the show’s Lucious Lyon character.

Each commander brings unique abilities to the table, including specialized upgrades and army bonuses. Players will join forces to battle through a series of challenging scenarios together, levelling up their commanders’ capabilities as they progress.

An array of new units will breathe new life into the online multiplayer battles that represent the core StarCraft II competitive experience. Zerg swarms will welcome the return of the Lurker, a classic creature from StarCraft: Brood War that lays waste to infantry with deadly spines which burst from the ground. The Protoss field a new weapon called the Disruptor, which can use massive energy spikes to wreak havoc through swaths of ground forces. And the Terrans have focused on establishing air superiority with the Liberator, a versatile, heavily armed gunship with twin missile launchers and the ability to transform into a stationary air platform, much like its ground-based Siege Tank counterpart. Six units are being added in total—two for each race—with many existing units receiving updates to prepare for the coming battle.

Legacy of the Void will also include enhancements to online multiplayer play in the form of automated tournaments, providing players with exciting ongoing events that support the competitive StarCraft II community.

Review: TP-Link TL-PA8030PKIT 3 Port powerline

Here is the review of the TP-LINK AV1200 Gigabit Passthrough Powerline Adapter Starter Kit (two different models out now: TL-PA8010PKIT with one Ethernet port and TL-PA8030PKIT with three), we are testing the TL-PA8030PKIT with three Ethernet ports.

Most of us nowadays have either a smart TV, Sky+, PC or laptops, games consoles and more. These come with Ethernet ports on the back so you can get super speedy Internet connections for catch-up TV, over-the-internet gameplay, or Web access.

IMG_20150911_082538348_HDR

But your Internet router/modem is usually in a different room to all these digital home-entertainment devices. Who wants to stretch ugly Ethernet cables all over their house?

IMG_20150911_082734902_HDR

You get two Powerline adapters, two Ethernet cables and resource cd with the manuals.

IMG_20150911_082827464_HDR

Plug one Powerline adapter into the wall socket near the router, and then connect the adapter to the router via Ethernet cable. Then take the other Powerline adapter and plug that into a power socket near the TV/Sky+, Xbox etc. You can now connect these to the second adapter via another Ethernet cable, then press the pair button on the side of the adapter. Now the two powerline adapters are now configured to use your home’s electrical wiring as the Ethernet cable.
The TP-Link’s AV1200 Gigabit Passthrough Powerline Adapter Starter Kit is totally easy to install. It really is Plug & Play. No need to install software or configure your settings.

The latest Powerline adapters are being hailed as Gigabit as they have a theoretical maximum speed of 1,200Mbps. Slower 500Mbps and 200Mbps Powerline adapters are also available.

IMG_20150911_082806107_HDR
Their “Multiple Input Multiple Output” (MIMO) functionality within HomePlug AV2 significantly improves data-transfer rates. It uses any two electrical wire lines within a three-wire network to boost performance.

After-installing-TP Link TL-PA8030P

Speed test done after installing the TL-PA8030PKIT powerline

Specs
•TL-PA8010PKIT: HomePlug AV2 standard compliant, high-speed data transfer rates of up to 1200 Mbps
• 1 x Gigabit port per adapter
• Integrated power socket. TL-PA8030PKIT: HomePlug AV2 standard compliant, high-speed data transfer rates of up to 1200 Mbps
• 3 x Gigabit port per adapter
• Integrated power socket

Conclusion
The TP-Link AV1200 Gigabit Passthrough Powerline Adapter Starter Kit (TL-PA8010P KIT or TL-PA8030P KIT) matches its rival Gigabit Powerline adapter sets in our real-world speed tests. The TP Link TL-PA8030P (£69.99 from Amazon UK) is better value as it boasts three Gigabit Ethernet ports, compared to the TL-PA8010P’s single port adapters (£64.99 from Amazon UK). Both version neither versions includes functionality to add a new Wi-Fi hotspot in your house, as some other Powerline adapters do.

Who is the composer for Assassin’s Creed Syndicate?

0

Ubisoft announced that Grammy-nominated composer Austin Wintory (Journey, The Banner Saga) has composed the score for Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. The soundtrack album will be available when the game launches on 23rd October.

Known for his unique and often unusual musical approach, Wintory sought not just to capture the drama and excitement of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, but to evoke the prowess and sarcasm of the game’s main characters, Jacob and Evie Frye. Calling upon the imagery of the Assassins’ deadly combat as a dance between the huntress and her prey, the waltzing music reflects this playful yet violent energy. It features a chamber ensemble of elite players, performing with raw, visceral intensity, accompanied by incidental winds and trumpets, and showcasing dazzling virtuosic solo performances by acclaimed instrumentalists Sandy Cameron and Tina Guo. Wintory was inspired by the more intimate music of the mid-19th Century, the period of time in which the game takes place, and intentionally chose not to reference the massive orchestral music of the era. Wintory explains.

“I’ve had a long-held passion for the chamber music of the 19th Century; the intensity one can get from this sort of music is quite distinct from the massive force of an orchestra. You’re right in the face of a handful of brilliant players, each exploding with energy. Yet, because of its intimacy it can also sneak up on you in ways a lumbering orchestra can’t. It’s a dramatically tactile experience which seemed practically tailor-made for a tale of Victoria Era sibling Assassins”.

Wintory’s score is more than 3 hours long, and is highly dynamic based on the player’s emotional experience, capturing an array of moods and settings. The game’s score also highlights authentic folk music and hymns of the period, which are heard throughout being performed by in-game characters, and bleed into the score in both subtle and overt ways.

Set in London during the height of the Industrial Revolution, players will step into the shoes of twin Master Assassins, Jacob and Evie Frye. Fighting to liberate London, Jacob and Evie help define the birth of organised crime in an adventure filled with action, intrigue, and brutal combat. The development of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is being led by Ubisoft Quebec.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate will be available worldwide for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, on 23rd October and will be available for Windows PC on 19th November.
