Top Tech from Birmingham, Times Gone By

0

Gadget Show Live has today announces the results of a poll, held in conjunction with Visit Birmingham, to find the region’s most important inventions from times gone by.

GSL Pacemaker

The winners include the pacemaker, the pen and the kettle. To mark the event, a commemorative plaque has been unveiled by Jon Bentley at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, home of the Lucas Abrams Pacemaker.

Birmingham’s relationship with technology, innovation and all things gadgetry goes back hundreds of years, with some of the world’s best ever inventions starting life in the minds and on the drawing boards of Birmingham’s finest forefathers. In celebration of these achievements, The Gadget Show Live (31st March-3rd April, NEC) has held a poll with the people of Birmingham to decide their favourite local inventions that make them proudest of the City.

The top three winning inventions comprise the Lucas Abrams pacemaker, invented in 1960 by Leon Abrams and first fitted at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital; the pen, invented by John Mitchell in Newhall Street during 1822; and the first immersed heating resistor, which paved the way for the first electric kettles, invented in 1922 by Arthur L. Large of Bulpitt & Sons.

Jon Bentley, presenter of The Gadget Show, which is filmed in Birmingham, comments, “The UK is extremely lucky to have a production powerhouse like Birmingham, putting Britain at the forefront of past, present and future technical innovation. From time-saving products like the kettle to life-saving inventions like the pacemaker – Birmingham’s gadget heritage is hard to beat. It’s great to be able to celebrate the products that the people of Birmingham are proudest of.”

Visit Birmingham, champions of local innovation who helped support the campaign. Emma Gray, director of marketing and communications, Marketing Birmingham, said: “Birmingham’s history is a timeline of tech-savvy achievement. A city that once pioneered the creation of life-changing gadgets is now driving forward a thriving digital and technology sector.

Birmingham has produced some of the most inventive minds, responsible for the creation of innovative, important gadgets ranging from the camera to the microphone. It is fantastic to be able to pay homage to the creators of the kettle, pen and pacemaker who turned their brilliant ideas into a digital reality.”

Other local inventions to note included the bicycle bell, box cameras, electrical heat and detectors, the electric car horn, gas lighting, the letter copying machine, the microwave oven, a number of innovative record players, roller skates and the skateboard, the cooker, the hand grenade, the microphone, x-ray scanner, vacuum cleaner, the whistle, the windscreen wiper, and also various innovations in technology from previous generations of the Berners-Lee family, and their son, Tim Berners-Lee’s, World Wide Web invention.

Review: Lucid Sound LS30 Wireless Gaming Headset

You may not of heard of Lucid Sound headsets just yet in the UK £129/€179/$149.99 already out in the US with Europe at the beginning of April, but you going to hear them very soon Lucid Sound is founded by Triton founder Chris Von Huben.

IMG_20160304_124942677

Announced at the year CES 2016, the LS30 just coming to market in Europe, every detail of the LS30 was developed with gamers in mind, with a focus on an innovative interface, ultimate comfort, solid construction, and something yet to be seen in a gaming headset incredible style.

IMG_20160304_125458120

You get all the audio leads for Xbox One and Xbox 360 and the audio mic for the LS30

Compatible with PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, mobile phones, and mobile gaming devices, the Lucid Sound LS30 features a design centred on comfort, style, and innovative controls. With 50mm Neodymium drivers provide deep bass and clear highs. With three audio modes, Normal, Bass Boost and Treble Boost, gamers can find the “best” sound for a wide range of gaming, while the rechargeable battery offers up to 15 hours of uninterrupted, comfortable gameplay.

With advanced 2.4GHz uncompressed wireless technology provides the best possible sound quality and proprietary channel-hopping technology for interference-free audio. The LS30 also works as a passive headset via the 3.5mm cable with music devices and can be used for calls on smartphones using either the detachable boom mic or the integrated mic.

IMG_20160304_130628206

The headset ear cups on the LS30 are full ear surround cups, with thick enough padding that my ears didn’t come into contact with the headphones at all. Outside of each ear cup, the large circle design in the centre acts as a button to mute game or the chat audio.

IMG_20160304_130432499

With the circle surrounding that is a volume dial to manually reduce or increase game or chat audio independently from the LS30 headset.

IMG_20160304_130511164

It also features an EQ button to switch from Standard, Bass Boost, and Treble Boost, a power button, a charging port, a standard headphone socket, and a socket for an inline mic. Everything about wearing and operating the headset is well-handled.

IMG_20160304_130538192

The headset ear cups were comfortable to wear for large amounts of time, with the audio controls on the headset easy to operate by touch alone.

IMG_20160317_205551488

The headset can be used wirelessly using the included USB dongle, which is very easy to plug in and enjoy on PC. For console players wanting wireless audio, you’ll have to use a little different solution of running an optical cable from your console into the USB dongle. While I was initially concerned about this setup, there was no perceptible lag or loss in quality.

Design

The headphone design has quickly become almost as important as sound quality for gaming headsets now days. With high end headphones are often sleek and stylish design, the LS30 gaming headsets have a style that’s all their own.

Conclusion

With a world that’s it filled with gaming peripherals of all different types, trying to find a headset that hits all of the major features without sacrificing in its design can be a big task. With Lucid Sound might be a new name in the headphone game, but if my two weeks spent with the LS-30s is anything to go by, they’ll be here to stay.

If you are a gamer you will be pleased to find that the LS-30s are comfortable to wear for long periods of time, with very good bass response and with excellent directional sound. The mic (as well as independent chat/game volume controls) also works well, and the universal wired/wireless compatibility is fantastic.

The wireless range on the headset is impressively large, and the 15 hour battery life on the headset should be more than enough for the longest gaming sessions. As for audio quality, the LS30 has a surprisingly wide audio range, with impressively rich bass on its standard EQ. The headset held up equally well with multi-layered audio mixed music, as well as combat-heavy gaming, “you ears are made for the LS30“.

Even, when you’re not gaming, the LS30s should also serve you very well as an normal pair of headphones especially from a design perspective. Just take the mic off and the LS-30s wouldn’t look out of place on the train during your daily travel.

Review: Wondershot

One of the great aspects to ID@Xbox is the range of titles available and also the demographic they are aimed at not only grown ups like to play video games but a younger audience as well. The special ones encourage both young and mature to share the experience and recent release Wondershot does just that.

Wondershot immediately reminds me of Bomberman with its top down four player style. Essentially an arena game with a collection of challenge based mini games and a multiplayer battle mode. Each of the playable characters has a different weapon with a special ability to give it a unique use in battle. It uses an almost back to basics system of ‘One Shot One Life’ with the simplicity that can add fun tension to matches. Hit your target and you get another shot straight away but miss and you are left rather vulnerable.

The game has a fun cartoon title with colourful characters and challenging skill Mini games that have a good variety and accessible learning curves as the player gets to grip with each character and their ability. Choosing from a bow and arrow, hammer, boomerang and a slingshot, each will make you play in a different way and as the areas change in layout, will require a different strategy in their use.

But it is the Local Multiplayer that stood out for me with the same sense of competitive fun as Bomberman making it great to play against friends and a nostalgic nod back to times of old where the only multiplayer possible was having friends sharing a sofa and playing games. The action is quick and fluid and it is not long before gloating and banter are flying around as much as the weapons on-screen. Wonder shot really is great fun but it’s limitations are noticeable.

Sadly as fun as the Multiplayer is, including a co-op horde style mode, the fact that it is only local multiple with no online option is a real shame as this could be a cracking title to match make with others. Only having four characters and weapons to pick also feels like a wasted opportunity to really give the game an organic and vibrant cast of characters which in turn bring more variety to match ups.

wondershot 2-800x452

Wonder shot when played with friends can be great fun with enough to keep matches entertaining. But for solo play it offers rather little to keep you coming back outside of the competitive need to conquer all the challenges. It is held back by the lack of online options and though it is really designed to be a party game, it lacks anything to really want to pick it up outside of playing with friends.

This is definitely one that a younger audience can enjoy easily enough but the trickier levels may prove too challenging.

Review: Assault Android Cactus

If you fancy a little trip down memory lane to the bygone era of twin-stick shooters, then the good folks at Witch Beam have you covered. Assault Android Cactus brings the nostalgia straight to you, featuring solid mechanics, accurate controls and the ever welcome mantra of easy to learn, yet hard to master gameplay. Can it hold its own in the modern arena of gaming, or is a few steps back considered a few steps too far?

Assault Android Cactus, for all intents and purposes, is a fairly weird name; it refers to the titular android character, ‘Cactus’ who, I guess, assaults things. In true 90’s, Saturday morning anime fashion, the overly cheesy, tongue in cheek humour plays towards the theme of the game. A welcome early cutscene sets the tone well, with the headstrong Cactus crashing her ship into an unexpectedly armed mining craft, hopefully before being berated by her superior.

aac_002
When you don’t have quite enough to contend with, the floor moves

It’s at this point that you’ll be briefly introduced to a few other members of your rag tag band of cutesy androids. Instead of being able to customise guns or abilities, you’ll pick a character that has a primary and a heavy weapon, with the heavy doing significantly more damage, but overheating quickly. The green-haired protagonist Cactus for example, wields an accurate machine gun as her primary weapon, and can switch to her heavy flamethrower to take out the larger foes. With each playable character having their own individual weapons, quips and appearances, it’s a good idea to give each of them a quick test as soon as you unlock them, especially seeing as some are more suited to different levels than others.

As is tradition in a thumbstick shooter, you’ll be using the left stick to move about the place, whilst using the right stick to aim your weapon. The right shoulder buttons are used to fire and the left ones switch to your heavy weapon. Granting a few frames of invincibility in the process, it becomes largely something you may come to utilise in the later levels. A minor gripe being that seeing as 99% of the time you’ll be firing your weapon anyway; it would be nice to have the option to just have your gun shoot upon aiming with the right thumbstick, instead of also having to hold either R1 or R2.

Whilst this might all be sounding a little familiar to anyone who’s tinkered in this genre before, Assault Android Cactus does have a few sneaky tricks up its sleeve in order to set it aside from the pack. Most other games such as this rely upon precision movement during ‘bullet hell’ stages to succeed; AAC on the other hand, relies upon its battery system for uniqueness. During the game, your battery will constantly drain at a fixed rate (unless you die, then it’ll also lose a small amount) with the game ending if your battery runs dry. Acting as a pseudo time limit, you’ll have to chew through the enemy waves as fast as android-ly possibly, hoping for enemies to drop re-charging packs. It’s not as strict as it could’ve been, but it does constantly keep you on your toes and pushes you to clear enemies quickly.

aac_007
Starch is clearly everyone’s favourite

One thing the game does exceptionally well, is making you feel extremely powerful upon picking up one of the three, randomly dropped, power ups. One will drastically increase your movement speed whilst also increasing your pickup radius, helping you hoover all the upgrade tokens up. Another will freeze all onscreen enemies, letting you have a seconds respite whilst prioritising your damage; whilst the third will summon two drones to your side that fire alongside you.

The arenas themselves can pose just as much a headache as the enemies at times too, some will have conveyer belts around the outside that can affect your (and the enemies) movement speed and others will turn the lights off, leaving you panicky with a torch. Some will actively change the playable area mid-fight, making you constantly wonder where the battle will flow to next. Yet as difficult as this might sound, they’re nothing on the games’ boss battles however. With each distinct boss having their attack patterns change as you whittle down segments of their health, each encounter must be memorised and practised. Different characters also excel at certain bosses too; some occasions require a shotgun, whereas others might benefit from homing bullets, if you’re struggling, swapping to a different android can often help.

aac_003
Mesmerising, and difficult

Getting your money’s worth out of AAC will largely depend on the player. A run through of the campaign mode’s 25 levels won’t take an eternity, but if you’re into leaderboards, personal rankings and generally improving at the game, you can sink a lot of time into trying to get those fabled S+ ranks. There’s also a daily challenge, an endless survival type mode and a boss run that are each worth a shot if you’re up to it. Game modifiers, concept art and music from within the game can also be unlocked by spending your earned points too; it’s a nice touch that gives you a little something extra to work towards. Sadly there’s no online multiplayer however, so to get your co-op fix, you’ll be restricted to the couch. I’m sure there are reasons behind this, but it is a little disappointing in this age of consoles to be stuck without it.

As for the look and feel of the game, most importantly it runs smoothly, the frames never drop when the action heats up, leaving you no excuse when you fail miserably. The art style matches well with the theme and the constant gunfire never really gets to a grating point. Each character having their own little quips and responses is a welcome touch too.

Assault Android Cactus is a fantastic foray into the past, and Witch Beam’s take on the twin thumbstick shooter feels as fresh now as it once did years ago. It’s easy for newcomers to get into, whilst also giving the hardcore something to sink their voracious fangs into upon completion. After all, those S+ ranks aren’t going to earn themselves.

Review: Action Henk

Action Henk is a racing track game set in a children’s bedroom and stars Action Henk, a once famous and popular toy who has certainly seen better days. Prompted into action after his award is stolen, Action Henk must get back into Action Hero shape in order to get it back by running races. With so many arcade titles releasing for Xbox One, can Action Henk do enough to earn a purchase?

With gameplay that reminds me of Doritos Crash Course but without the obstacles, Action Henk is all about building momentum and timing. Mastering both is key to getting fast times as the courses increase in difficulty as you progress as the tracks add little twists and gameplay tricks to keep the player on their toes.

Action Henk literally slides on his butt in order to help pick up speed going down slopes to pick up enough momentum and speed to drive forward with the goal of reaching the finishing line in the quickest time possible. Times are graded by bronze, silver and Gold medals. Earning gold in all the races of that area set will open a bonus track to complete. Each set will end with a challenge race against an AI opponent, another toy character that stands in the way of our hero Action Henk. Defeating them will make them a selectable character to use instead of Henk himself.

Gameplay wise the early tracks are fairly simple and easy going with the only real challenge is to improve your own time and place higher on the online leader board per track which places your score globally and with other friends playing the game. Sadly there is no real change to the gameplay until the third set of tracks which adds a grapple tool allowing Henk to add rope swinging to navigate tracks.

The problem lies in how long it takes to get to the more challenging tracks for the early areas feel samey with loading times lasting longer than the tracks themselves at times. I felt the presentation of the game is really rather average with the quality of the opening cinematic clearly in need of some more polish for being on a new gen console. The themes each area has to show more of the children’s bedroom has nice little details with references that are easy to spot.

action henk 2-800x450

Whilst Action Henk looks like a fairly typical arcade game, it is a fun and challenging experience that will appeal to those with a competitive nature and drive to improve their own times on the tracks. It does take a while to hit the more testing tracks but with 9 areas with 5 tracks, one boss challenge and the bonus track for getting Gold in all tracks in that area, Action Henk has enough to keep a player gaming for a good while.
Definitely worth putting on your sports gear on and taking a chance on, it is a fun arcade title with a solid Multiplayer to extend gameplay and enough solo content to be worth a purchase.

Preview: Beyond Flesh and Blood

We were recently invited to an exclusive preview of upcoming third person shooter ‘Beyond Flesh and Blood’ and were fortunate to get a hands on with an alpha build demo of its gameplay and story. Though it was an early build, we could already see a lot of potential and how can you go wrong when your mech can grab a street lamp and go play golf with bad guys?

The year is 2281 and military grade VR is the only way back to Earth, 80 years after a Global War for resources forced decent society to the edge of Earth’s atmosphere. Space is safe but rumours of aliens, terrorists and a meteorite strike finally conscript Ethan away from the UGR Astralis orbital colony.

This is where the opening to the demo and the story of ‘Beyond Flesh and Blood’ begins as the player takes the role of Ethan Cunningham as he takes an entrance exam to see if he has the skills needed to join the military defended force and pilot the most advanced battle mechs possible.

But as this is just the start of the story poor Ethan is already doomed to fail but the exam itself puts you in the top end prototype mech suit and throws you into the heart of battle taking on a whole army of enemies but it gives the player a real sense of the power that piloting the mechs can give. Having a full Arsenal of abilities try out really gave a great look at the combat which was fluid and fast but brutal and satisfying all at the same time.
Sadly it is scripted for Ethan to fail the exam and as a result ends up as a low-level menial task mech pilot, much to the disappointment of his family, but with the will of becoming far more. The game itself will feature five classes of mech, each with its own weapon arsenal and abilities and as you progress through the story you will move up or upgrade to a more advanced mech. The first real mech you pilot is an industrial level one which has basic weapons and is a real change in power level from the prototype used in the prologue test.

All mechs can be used to hack the security, identify enemies, and take them out as you explore a city devastated after the world war to end all wars has ravaged the planet. Which has an intriguing and unique twist, the city you are exploring is…..Manchester.

Beyond Flesh and Blood 2_crop_933x393-800x337

Yup whilst other games focus on either made up city’s on Earth or use a famous US city like New York, Beyond Flesh and Blood’s main action takes place in Manchester England. It becomes less of a surprise when you learn the game is being developed by a four man team at Pixel Bomb games and all hail from Manchester. I really enjoyed the British feeling to the game in the midst of what could be a generic sci-fi story of humanity wrecking the planet, forced to escape to a space station and using advanced robot mechs piloted by crew on that space station to explore city’s and look after survivors.

But for me what really stood out from this preview demo was the combat, and I really enjoyed it. From basic third person combat, the player can really feel the difference in fighting as you move to more advanced mechs. Attack options can be linked together for devastating combos that blend weapon and melee attacks with superb and glorious results included great execution animations. I got a real kick from using guns and rockets to obliterate enemies and range but it was using the grab ability to pick up enemies and scenery to throw as weapons that made me have an almost maniacal smile which reminded me of the combat from The Darkness 2. Allowing me to grab a street light to go swinging it around sending enemies flying was great fun. All the above made the combat really intuitive as I was putting combos together which was made all the more possible thanks to the bullet time ability that when triggered in combat slows down time allowing the targeting of multiple enemies which proved very handy when caught in a jam.

Beyond Flesh and Blood 3-800x450
I came away from the preview demo impressed with Beyond Flesh and Blood. It has a story and setting that is interesting, visually the game looks good and the combat was rewarding enough that I look forward to seeing how the final version plays. Knowing that such a small developer team is working on this title just makes it even more impressive and I am really think this is one to watch for fans of shooters. There is certainly enough going by what I was fortunate to play to make Beyond Flesh and Blood firmly on my to be played list.

* To be released on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
