Review: Pocket Witch

Pocket Witch is one of those games that makes you scream. Furthermore, it tests you to your limits and makes you swear more than you’d like. However, its cruel action and simple style make it an addictive and easy game to pick up.

Developed by Naoka Games and Eastasiasoft Limited and published by the latter, this is a precision platforming title. What’s more, it comprises many minor puzzles and has a fantastic retro aesthetic. Consequently, it is a wonderful but harsh experience for fans of old-school gaming.

The sneaky spider tries to catch you out.
Sneaky spider.

Pocket Witch lacks originality.

There is lots to love about Pocket Witch. Yet, its lack of originality will drive you mad. Subsequently, many of its core mechanics are well-trodden or borrowed from similar games. However, the stage design and basic enemies are interesting and challenging to overcome.

You control a witch that has been locked in a dungeon. This dank space is full of traps, metal doors, and roaming enemies. As such, you must plan your route, use your special powers, and avoid the attention of each creature. If you can do this, you’ll collect an array of keys, unlock each blocked passageway, and escape your prison.

As you can see, this idea is as old as the hills. But it matters not. The execution of each simple mechanic and the excellent aesthetics work in perfect harmony. Moreover, the brutal nature of each stage tests your patience as well as your foul vocabulary.

The witch uses her dash ability to avoid the spikes.
Dash and avoid the spikes.

Easy to understand but tough to master.

What I love about precision platforming games is how tough they are to play. Normally, they are deceptively simple to pick up, but they’ll break your balls repeatedly. Pocket Witch does just that with its basic gameplay mechanics but claustrophobic and tight levels to navigate. The titular hero must squeeze through tiny gaps while avoiding spikes, fireballs, and roaming enemies.

If you can avoid your foes, you’ll have to time your jumps, use a special dash ability, and grab any keys you see. However, this is easier said than done as spiders and your enemies block your way. Accordingly, you’ll die repeatedly, and curse repeatedly. Yet, you won’t be able to put it down as it has a distinct “just one more try” feel about it.

Pocket Witch is brilliantly old-school.

Now, I understand the hatred of old-school games. Many people want developers to use the full power of each modern machine. Yet, I have a soft spot for retro indie games and I adored Pocket Witch because of it. With a gaudy colour palette and basic single-screen level design, it won’t set the world alight. Yet, its straightforward design and excellent level layout make it easy to look at and fun to explore. On top of this, the simple sprites are great and the animation is rudimentary but suitable for the art style.

The audio was equally good. The Halloween-style soundtrack added drama while suiting the witchy theme. Moreover, the stripped-back sound effects don’t overpower the action, and this was a great choice. It would have been easy for the developers to go over the top. However, thankfully, they kept things simple. Accordingly, it was never uncomfortably loud, and I never tired of what I saw or heard.

The witch avoids the poisonous purple slime.
Avoid the purple slime.

The controls could have been tighter.

Loose controls and precision platformers do not complement one another. Sadly, though, this is exactly what happens in Pocket Witch. Disappointingly, the navigation inputs lack accuracy and this causes unnecessary issues. Consequently, you’ll die more than you’d expect and your patience is tested more than it should be. However, other than this, the action inputs are responsive and the button layout is easy to follow.

Another issue with Pocket Witch is its lack of longevity or replay value. With only 30 levels and no collectables to hunt, there is little reason to return. Its only saving grace is that the gameplay is challenging enough to keep you going for hours. Yet, once you complete it, there is no NG+ mode, nor is there a speedrun option. Subsequently, this was disappointing, as it was a missed opportunity.

Pocket Witch is an enjoyable yet brutal platformer.

Though I despise a rage-inducing game, I found Pocket Witch to be enjoyable and challenging. The simple mechanics, interesting stage design, and old-school aesthetics were great. But it is held back by a lack of replay value or in-depth content. Accordingly, I recommend that you buy it despite its shortcomings. Can you help the witch escape her prison? Avoid the spikes, evade your foes, and get to the locked door.

Review: VOLTME 140W GaN charger

Whenever I get sent a physical item to review, I get excited. However, I must admit that reviewing a high-powered wall charging port doesn’t exactly get my juices flowing. Nonetheless, I was impressed with the incredibly well-built VOLTME 140W GaN charger. This compact and robust charging port is suitable for laptops, mobile phones, tablets, sports watches, and much more. On top of this, it is available in many countries and can save you plenty of time when charging your devices.

I recently covered the Belkin Desktop charger and was thoroughly impressed by its design and user-friendly approach. Consequently, I didn’t know what to expect from VOLTME. First of all, I know little about the brand. Secondly, at around £120, it is a hefty investment. However, with a high-powered output, and a simple design, it proves to be great value for money. Moreover, the standard 3-point plug allows you to plug it into any normal socket while benefiting from the fast charging facilities.

What’s in the box of the VOLTME 140W GaN charger?

  • The cardboard packaging has a simple but striking colour palette. What’s more, the grey and orange accents are complemented by key selling points. Alongside this, the box and its contents are 100% recyclable and that was fantastic.
  • The VOLTME 140 GaN charger has a matte black finish, and a vivid LED indicator, and weighs 270g. On top of this, a dimpled effect ensures that it is comfortable to hold without being slippery. To the rear, you’ll note 3 charging points. The lower one is for a USB-A cable, the middle one is for USB-C, and the upper one is for a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable.
  • User guide. A quick start guide that explains the fundamentals.

Technical aspects.

If you’ve never used a GaN charger, let me break down some of the basics for you. This modern charging tech enables manufacturers to cram higher-powered components into smaller units. Additionally, there is a reduced risk of overheating and multiple devices can be charged at the same time. However, when you connect more than one item, the charger automatically divides the power between both devices. In this case, the VOLTME 140W GaN charger offers a maximum output of 130W across two electronic devices.

If you wish to extract the maximum power from this charger, you must connect either an original USB-C to MagSafe or PD3.1(28V 5A) USB-C to USB-C cable. Alternatively, you can use a standard USB-C cable to get 100W of juice. Now, you may be worried about identifying the correct port to use. However, thankfully, VOLTME has considered this problem. By using some simple engraved images, you can’t go wrong. Unsurprisingly, the 140W port is marked by the picture of a laptop. Subsequently, it is a straightforward and well-considered device.

Fast charging and safety.

The most important aspects of a charger are its fast-charging facilities and how safe it is to use. First, let’s see how it does with some power-hungry devices. A MacBook Pro can be charged to 100% in well under 2 hours. Alternatively, an iPhone can get from 0% to 50% in around 40 minutes. I received similar results from a Google Pixel 7 Pro and was equally impressed with the charging times for my iPad. Accordingly, these are some spectacular numbers that should impress any tech-savvy individuals.

Speed to one side, I’m more concerned about my electronic devices frying. Subsequently, I was happy to discover that the VOLTME 140W GaN charger has safety features that prevent overheating, short circuits, and over-voltage. As such, this was reassuring, as I didn’t want my new charger frying my expensive goods.

Is the VOLTME 140W GaN charger worth it?

£120 is a lot of money in anyone’s book. Yet, this excellent device is well worth the money. Not only is it well built, but it has a modern finish, and it provides a rapid charging facility for every portable electronic item in your house. Alongside this, the simple but effective engraved images, vivid LED indicator, lightweight design, and 3-point plug feature make it a portable and user-friendly solution. Consequently, I loved this excellent charger and recommend that you buy it here!

The VOLTME 140W GaN charger has been awarded the Movies Games and Tech gold award.

Game boosting or self-paced games?

0

The debate about whether boosting can be used in games has been going on for many years. In this article, we will tell you about what game boosting is, what advantages and disadvantages it has, in which games it can be useful, and what advantages there are in playing games on your own.

Game boosting refers to the practice of using various techniques and strategies to quickly progress through levels or increase the power or ranking of a player’s hero in a video game. Game boosting could be a helpful tool for players looking to improve their performance in a game or gain an advantage over their competition.

How can boosting help?

In what way can it be expressed? First, boot companies like SkyCoach.gg can help you level your character in any game. This is convenient both for new players who have not really figured out the game mechanics yet but want to see progress as quickly as possible and for veterans of the game. Why do veterans of the game, who seem to know the game inside and out, need boosting? It’s easier to explain with an example – imagine that you have been playing World of Warcraft for the Alliance for five years. And then suddenly you decide to play for the Horde. Do you want to upgrade your character from scratch? Of course, you know all the mechanics, secrets, and ways of pumping. But after all, you have already done this before, you may just be too lazy to start it again. The first levels are usually very simple, but nevertheless dull – so by ordering a boosting game, you can save time.

Boosting companies also help in completing daily activities, collecting resources, obtaining certain items, completing difficult missions, and even buying currency. The list is not limited to this and specific services may already depend on the games in which you want to place an order.

In what genres is boosting used?

Here are several game genres where game boosting can be beneficial:

  1. MMORPGs – World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV

In MMORPGs, game-boosting services could assist in leveling quickly and efficiently. This can be useful for players who are short on time or who want to quickly progress through the game’s content to access new areas, quests, or dungeons. Boosting services can also provide players with powerful gear and equipment that can help them compete at higher levels of play.

  1. First-Person Shooters (FPS) – Call of Duty, Overwatch

Game-boosting solutions can be utilized in first-person shooter games to assist players to enhance their kill-death ratio, sharpen their aim and accuracy, or move up the ranks in competitive matches. Boosting services may help gamers with activities like winning tournaments, earning awards, and unlocking new weaponry in addition to offering advice on how to better their gaming.

  1. Sports Games – FIFA, NBA 2K

In sports games, game boosting can help players attain higher rankings, earn more rewards, and unlock new content. Boosting services can also offer assistance with tasks such as earning coins, purchasing player cards, and upgrading a team’s players and equipment.

  1. Battle Royale Games – Fortnite, Apex Legends

In battle royale games, game boosting can be used to attain a higher ranking, increase the number of victories, or earn rewards more quickly. Boosting services can also offer assistance with tasks such as landing in high-risk areas, earning kills, and surviving until the end of a match.

  1. MOBA Games (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) – League of Legends, Dota 2

In MOBA games, game-boosting services can help players attain a higher ranking, earn rewards more quickly, and unlock new content. Boosting services can also offer assistance with tasks such as earning wins, earning experience points, and mastering specific champions or heroes.

What other benefits can we mention?

Gaming can be highly addictive and can consume a large amount of time, leading to a sedentary lifestyle and reducing time spent on physical activities. This can lead to health problems such as obesity, poor posture, carpal tunnel syndrome, and other repetitive strain injuries.

Gaming addiction can also negatively impact relationships, work, and education. Additionally, many games contain graphic violence, sex, and other adult themes that can be inappropriate for children. Constant exposure to such content can desensitize individuals and potentially lead to aggressive behavior. Furthermore, playing games can also be expensive, both in terms of the cost of purchasing the games and the cost of the necessary equipment.

To spend less time playing and be less aggressive when you can’t complete the next hard mission, you can use game boosting.

What are the benefits of self-paced games?

Gaming can offer a number of benefits, including the following:

  • Improved hand-eye coordination: Many games require quick reflexes and precise hand movements, which can help to improve hand-eye coordination.
  • Problem-solving skills: Games often present challenges that require players to think creatively and develop strategies to overcome obstacles.
  • Increased cognitive flexibility: Cognitive flexibility, or the capacity to quickly adjust to changing circumstances, can be enhanced through gaming.
  • Building relationships and social skills through multiplayer games allow users to communicate with people from all over the world.
  • Stress reduction: Playing games may be a terrific way to relax and unwind while offering a pleasant diversion from the day’s stresses.
  • Increased creativity: Playing games that let players develop and create their own virtual worlds and characters may be a terrific way to let one’s creativity and imagination run wild.
  • Memory improvement: Games that require players to retain facts, patterns, and sequences can aid in short-term memory development.

Overall, playing video games may be an enjoyable and interesting hobby that has many advantages for both the mind and body. However, it’s crucial to have a healthy balance and prevent gaming from taking over one’s life. Therefore, if players experience difficulties in this area, then they often use boosting, because this service does not exclude any of the above benefits of gaming.

What are the innovations for eSports in 2023?

0

Esports has evolved from humble beginnings as a fun hobby a small group of people enjoy. Over the past few decades, it has grown into a massive industry that attracts millions of fans, players, and investors worldwide.

The early days of Esports can be traced back to the 1970s and 1980s when computer and video games started becoming popular. During this time, tournaments were organised, and players competed against each other in games such as “Space Invaders” and “Pac-Man.”

Early matches laid the foundation for the development of Esports and paved the way for the growth of the industry. In recent years, Esports has seen several exciting innovations and developments. In 2023, Esports is expected to reach breakthroughs with some exciting innovations discussed in this article.

Virtual Reality Revolutionising Esports

The introduction of virtual and augmented reality technology has transformed how players and fans experience Esports. Augmented Reality (AR) technology is poised to change the face of Esports, transforming the way we experience these games. As Esports shifts from physical venues to the virtual realm, AR will play a crucial role in bringing fans closer to the action.

Instead of simply watching the game on TV or in person, viewers will enjoy a fully-immersive virtual reality world where they can experience the excitement of the tournament as if they were there. AR technology will allow fans to interact with the digital elements of the game, providing an almost-real experience and adding a new level of excitement to the Esports experience.

Games Produced by Independent Developers

Independent games have been instrumental in the growth and development of Esports. Independent games refer to video games created by individual developers or small teams who do not receive financial or technical support from any publisher. These developers are self-sustaining and operate without outside assistance. They provide creative freedom, accessibility, and diversity to the industry. Independent games have helped to discover new players, build new communities, and provide a platform for new talent.

Esports Betting is the next big thing in 2023

With the exponential growth of the esports industry, it has become an exciting prospect and a rapidly growing area in the betting world. In the digital world, many platforms have also been developed for sport betting, which is very easy to use and provides different betting options.

The esports betting market is rapidly growing and is quickly closing the gap with traditional sports betting needs. While sportsbooks are experienced with conventional sports like football, basketball, and hockey, esports betting can appear more complex due to its different tournament structures, popularity, and frequent updates within the games. To successfully navigate the esports betting market, it is essential to understand every aspect of the games thoroughly.

Evolution of Female-Centric Games

The growth of women-centric games in Esports has been a significant development in the industry. These games have been designed to appeal to female gamers and have helped to create a more inclusive and diverse gaming community. Women-centric games have provided female players with a platform to showcase their skills, connect with other players, and compete in a supportive environment.

It is widely recognized that gaming is no longer a male-dominated activity. In the United States, studies show that approximately 40% of gamers are women, and this trend is expected to continue to grow. It is predicted that female gamers will increase, especially in Asian countries. Game developers have taken note of these trends and are anticipating an increase in the creation of games centred around female players. Some games already have female lead characters, such as Tomb Raider.

The growth of women-centric games in Esports has also helped to expand the industry’s reach. By appealing to a broader audience, women-centric games have helped to attract new players to Esports and to create a more diverse and inclusive gaming community.

Conclusion

Esports is bound to touch new heights in the coming years with the introduction of new technology each year. Today, it is a billion-dollar industry that attracts millions of fans and players from all over the world and is poised for continued evolution and innovation in the years to come. With the arrival of augmented reality technology, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and blockchain, the future of Esports looks brighter than ever.

How has eSports changed the sports industry?

0

Competitive gaming has experienced remarkable growth recently and has grown to be more than a billion-dollar industry. With this growth, esports has significantly impacted the traditional sports industry, transforming how people consume and engage with sports. Esports has opened up new revenue streams and sponsorship opportunities while creating a new ecosystem of job opportunities.

Increased Viewership and Engagement

A rise in viewership and engagement is esports’ most notable effect on the sports business. Younger sports fans are becoming increasingly interested in esports due to its fast-paced action and entertainment appeal. According to a report by Newzoo, the global esports audience reached 474 million in 2021 and is projected to reach 577 million by 2024. This growing audience presents a massive opportunity for the sports industry to tap into new markets and demographics.

Esports events have become a major attraction, drawing massive crowds and generating record-breaking viewership numbers. The League of Legends World Championship, for instance, attracted 5.15 million concurrent viewers in 2022, making it one of the most-watched events in the world. The growth of esports has also led to the creation of dedicated esports arenas and facilities, which have become popular destinations for players and fans alike.

New Revenue Streams and Sponsorship Opportunities

Esports has opened up new revenue streams and sponsorship opportunities for the sports industry. As the audience for esports continues to grow, traditional sports teams and organisations recognize the potential for collaboration and cross-promotion. Many professional sports teams and organisations have already entered the esports market by creating their esports teams or sponsoring existing ones.

The esports industry has also attracted significant investment from non-endemic brands, such as Coca-Cola, Samsung, and Nike. These brands recognize the potential of esports to reach a younger and highly engaged audience, presenting new sponsorship opportunities for sports organisations.

Esports Betting

Esports betting is one of the fastest-growing segments of the sports betting industry and has significantly impacted it. With the rise of esports, many traditional sportsbooks have started offering odds on major esports tournaments, allowing fans to bet on their favourite players and teams just as they would with conventional sports. This has brought excitement and engagement to the esports community while presenting a new revenue stream for sportsbooks and esports organisations. As a result, it is possible to get the best betting offers in UK  as various markets and competitive odds are now made accessible.

The emergence of New Job Opportunities

Esports has created a new ecosystem of job opportunities, from professional players and coaches to broadcast talent and production crews. The growth of esports has also led to the creation of new job roles. In addition to professional gaming roles, esports has created new job opportunities in broadcasting and production. Broadcasters and commentators are critical in providing viewers with an engaging and immersive experience, while production crews are responsible for creating high-quality content that appeals to audiences. As the industry continues to grow, there will be an increasing demand for skilled professionals to support the infrastructure and growth of esports.

Esports and Traditional Sports

In recent times, we have witnessed a growing synergy between both industries. Major sports teams and organisations have recognized the potential of esports and invested in esports teams. The integration of esports in traditional sports events has also become increasingly common. With the rise of online gaming, esports has brought a new dimension to the sports industry, allowing for greater accessibility and inclusivity. This convergence of esports and traditional sports is transforming the industry and opening up new opportunities for athletes, fans, and organisations.

Furthermore, the popularity of online streaming services like Twitch and YouTube has made it easier for people to follow their favourite teams and players, resulting in a more engaged and passionate fan base. This increase in accessibility has brought more people into the sports industry, and the potential for growth in the industry is enormous.

Final Thoughts

The impact of esports on the sports industry has been significant, from increased viewership and engagement to new revenue streams and sponsorship opportunities. The growth of esports has also created new job opportunities, presenting a unique opportunity for individuals interested in gaming and sports to explore exciting career paths. As esports continues to evolve and grow, it will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the sports industry in the years to come.

Review: Tortuga – A Pirate’s Tale

I think I was a pirate in a former life as I am fascinated by the subject. Whether it is the gruesome battles, the harsh but rewarding hunts, or the fear factor, I can’t get enough of it. As such, I have been hooked on pirate-themed games for as long as I can remember. Subsequently, I’ve sunk hours into PatricianPort Royale, and Sid Meyers Pirates. Therefore, when Tortuga – A Pirate’s Tale was released, I couldn’t wait to walk the plank and use my hook to grab a copy.

Developed by Gaming Minds Studios and published by Kalypso Media Group GmbH, this is a pirate simulation title. What’s more, it has plenty of turn-based combat and resource management elements. On top of this, you must balance greed and morale as you keep your crew happy and enhance your badass reputation. Yet, can this newcomer outdo its peers, or will it leave you with a sour taste in your mouth?

Tortuga – A Pirate’s Tale bites off more than it can chew.

I love a story-rich and in-depth game. However, Tortuga – A Pirate’s Tale tries far too hard! Accordingly, its action feels forced and the learning curve is uncomfortably tough. Moreover, unlike its peers, the turn-based element slows the gameplay to an almost unbearable crawl. As such, the excitement and thrill of naval combat are reduced to a collection of text-based decisions.

This to one side, let’s look at the plot. You control a petty captain who wishes to make a name for themselves. They sail the Caribbean sea where they decide to trade, fight, or tackle infamous pirates. With 4 nations to appease and plenty of pirate lords to chase, there is plenty to see and do. However, Tortuga – A Pirate’s Tale has bitten off more than it can chew. Sadly, a lack of guidance and ill-explained mechanics make it tough to play. Furthermore, a poor UI, tiny writing, and tedious combat make it tough to swallow.

Prepare to take down the pirate ship.
Prepare to fight.

Fighting and morale.

Unsurprisingly, the life of a pirate revolves around fighting, gold, and the morale of your men. Thankfully, Tortuga – A Pirate’s Tale had got these elements spot on. Unfortunately, though, the execution and delivery hinder the performance, and this leaves you wanting. With naval and city combat at the centre of everything you do, you’d think the developers would have put on a show. However, instead, it is a lacklustre affair that involves slow turn-based events and a heck of a lot of text.

Accordingly, it isn’t as exciting as it should have been and that was a shame. Alongside this, the poorly explained mechanics ensure that there is an unnecessary level of trial and error. You’ll spend the opening fragments of the game making mistakes, learning the fundamentals, and making further errors. What’s more, you’ll try to build relationships, trade at ports, and make gold. Yet, this is much harder than it should be, as you have almost no idea of what you are doing.

Thankfully, though, one of the reasonably well-explained mechanics was the morale system. Here, you must concentrate on the happiness of your crew and captains, and the governors of each city. Furthermore, you’ll keep each nation happy while trying to avoid each pirate lord. However, this is easier said than done as side quests, provisions, and a lust for treasure monopolise your time.

Each port offers safety, men, and goods.
Visit the tavern or sell your goods.

Turn-based combat.

Though the exploration is free-flowing and oddly sparse, the naval encounters focus on a basic turn-based affair. Here, you must be aware of wind direction and speed, the distance you travel, and the placement of your vessel. Furthermore, once multiple ships come into play, you will need to create a plan to maximise your potential.

In theory, this element of the game should be incredible. After all, you have all the time in the world to create the perfect seafaring encounter. Disappointingly, though, the rinse-and-repeat nature of each fight tarnishes a theoretically good idea. Subsequently, the action becomes tiresome extremely quickly, and this is unfortunate.

The sorrowful and underwhelming combat was only matched by the empty world you explore. Yes, the sea is vast, and each port is separated by miles of water, but the lack of ships is frustrating. Consequently, you could sail for days without seeing anyone else, and that isn’t my idea of fun.

Tortuga – A Pirate’s Tale misses a golden opportunity.

If you have played Port Royale or Patrician, you’ll be familiar with the art style. Yet, if you have missed these great games, let me fill you in. An isometric viewpoint is complemented by a free-flowing camera. On top of this, a simple-to-use map helps you to navigate the vast swathes of water. But unfortunately, a lack of first-person action makes each battle or raid feel voyeuristic. Instead of having a hands-on approach, you must sit back and observe the action unfolding. This was frustrating as the drama was drained away.

Other than this, the beautifully coloured ocean and the stunningly big world were great to look at and explore. The rich turquoise sea and occasional swells were well-considered and pleasant to the eye. Unfortunately, what wasn’t so good was the radial menus and the awful port from PC. Accordingly, trying to complete a task, visiting the tavern, or raising your skull and crossbones was much harder than it should have been. Therefore, players will experience an unnecessary amount of frustration that taints the end product.

Alongside this, the irritating “piratey” soundbites will grate on you. The many “yars, ahoys, and blow me-downs” are uncomfortably cliched and not entirely necessary. However, I liked the classic pirate-themed soundtrack and the hard-hitting sound effects. What’s more, the crashing of the waves, the booming cannons, and the scream of your crew were wonderfully constructed.

A ship is scuttled on the shore.
Probably best to keep away from the shore.

The controls will make you want to walk the plank.

Gaming Minds Studios hasn’t considered the impact of the PC to console port. Accordingly, the clunky use of radial menus and the soul-destroying pace undermine any fragment of potential. Moreover, the ill-explained control system and game mechanics make it unbelievably tough to master. As such, you’ll spend more time trying to work out what you are supposed to do rather than enjoying your newfound pirate life. The exception to this was the excellent open-world navigation. Controlling your ship and moving it freely across the ocean was a treat. However, this was tainted by the lack of ships and the vast levels of emptiness.

Where Tortuga – A Pirate’s Tale should excel is its replay value and longevity. If you can ignore the shortcomings, there are plenty of missions to undertake, loads of battles to win, and plenty of ship upgrades to install. On top of this, you can attack pirate lords, forge relationships with each nation and sack every port you encounter. Accordingly, it has the potential to be phenomenal, but sadly, it falls way short and will disappoint you.

Tortuga – A Pirate’s Tale disappointed me.

I’ve invested so much of my life into Port Royale and Patrician that I had high expectations of Tortuga – A Pirate’s Tale. Consequently, its lacklustre gameplay and slow action disappointed me. Furthermore, the simple tactics, basic combat, and empty seas will leave you wanting. On top of this, the developers have tried too hard with the pirate theme. As such, the soundbites are unnecessarily annoying. However, if you can overlook these issues, you’ll experience a game that is massive, full of missions and has some interesting political elements. Yet, this isn’t enough to overcome the shortcomings. Accordingly, I don’t recommend that you buy it, but more information can be found here! Will you become a pirate lord? Steal resources, sink ships, and forge strong relationships with each nation.

The PowerPic mod Wireless Charger from TwelveSouth is small and lightweight and looks good sitting on a desk, a bookshelf, or anywhere else you want to put it.

There is a removable panel at the front of the frame (held on by small magnets) where you can place a 4×6 inch photograph if you want to – or you can just leave it empty – the choice is yours.

The charging panel can be used horizontally or vertically depending on your needs.

Review: Nadir: A Grimdark Deckbuilder

The deck-building genre is hit-and-miss. Consequently, my experiences have been a bit of a mixed bag. However, I can say that they are amazing to play casually, and when they work, they are phenomenal. As such, when I was offered Nadir: A Grimdark Deckbuilder, I wasn’t so certain. Yet, its interesting aesthetics and sinister theme piqued my interest. Therefore, I jumped in with full enthusiasm as I took a journey through hell.

Developed by Team Nadir and Black Eye Games, and published by the latter, this is a roguelike deckbuilder. What’s more, it has a fascinating twist on the usual tropes and grim foes and is simple to play once the fundamentals are mastered. Accordingly, I was soon hooked on its interesting concept and amazing art style.

Nadir: A Grimdark Deckbuilder is available on Steam and Nintendo Switch, but isn’t verified for Steam Deck. However, I can assure you that it works perfectly on SD with only minor issues. Another point to note is that the amazing publishers at Crunching Koalas are the publishing team behind the Nintendo Switch version. However, Team Nadir are responsible for the transition from PC to Switch.

Welcome to the gates of hell.

Demons, sins, and sorrow all go hand-in-hand. Consequently, when you are asked to deep-dive a demonic portal to face off with a sin-loving demon, you know there will be problems. You may pick from 3 characters with unique traits. 2 of these individuals must be unlocked as the game progresses. Once you’ve chosen your hero, you must select which sin demon to tackle. Again, 1 is unlocked to start, and you must progress and improve your base to unlock more.

Once the rules of engagement are set, you start a journey on a layered path to the demon’s lair. Each circle is loaded with combat encounters, special unlockable nodes, shops, deck customisation points, and, potentially, a demi-demon. At the start of each layer, you open with a fight. Once you are successful, you may choose to progress inwards or activate the other nodes on that layer. If you manage to survive and reach the demon, you must kill them and choose to return to your base or continue onwards. If you proceed, the fights are harder, but the rewards are greater. Alternatively, if you return home, your treasure and resources are safe, and you live to fight another day.

Will you attack or will you defend?
Take that!

Resources and card crafting.

The aforementioned resources are key to your success. Every battle you undertake awards you skulls, shards, and more. These items are used to buy new buildings or upgrade existing structures. Furthermore, they unlock each character and open the pathways for new demons. Alongside this, you’ll get an array of new and impressive cards to craft during each run.

Like the resources, each battle offers you the opportunity to craft new cards for your deck. These temporary items offer you a tactical advantage during each encounter. Moreover, if you’ve improved your base, the chances of creating game-changing cards are much higher. During the crafting session, you may pick from three blue cards and three red cards. Each item has certain traits that can enhance or hinder your performance. Subsequently, you must be wise and think thoroughly before committing.

Nadir: A Grimdark Deckbuilder has a steep (ish) learning curve.

When a game utilises a refined concept, you don’t expect a tough learning curve. Yet, Nadir: A Grimdark Deckbuilder has a steep (ish) curve that is challenging to overcome. Fortunately, though, once you climb the data dump mountain, you won’t look back. Instead, you’ll master the fundamentals and then spend your time polishing your strategies.

This is what makes this deckbuilder so moreish. With roguelike mechanics and wonderfully balanced tactics, you must think many steps ahead. Moreover, the game keeps no secrets, and you know what to expect throughout. As such, you must formulate a plan, hope for a little luck, and work your way past each heinous demon.

Choose your hero and prepare to enter the gates of hell.
Which hero will you pick?

A deckbuilder like no other.

The core gameplay focuses on the hero and their evil foe. Your enemy holds 3 cards in their hand. These tools are coloured red or blue and the reverse side is the opposite colour. Moreover, each card highlights your opponent’s reaction if the card is activated. Consequently, you know what will happen and potentially how to overcome it. In your hand, you hold cards that are both red and blue. What’s more, each colour has a set action, and it tells you what you need to use for each card. Effectively, it’ll highlight how many red or blue cards your opponent needs in order to use it. (Clear as mud so far?).

Once the criteria are matched, you will unleash defensive or offensive tactics. You may increase your armour, protect yourself with a shield, enhance your rage, slash your sword, and much, much more. Whatever you decide, you must calculate the risk vs reward. Subsequently, if you go on the attack, you must expect to be injured or worse. Therefore, studying your opponent’s hand and formulating a plan is the only way to succeed.

Nadir: A Grimdark Deckbuilder is eerie and melancholy.

It was hard not to love the disgusting aesthetics of this title. With a simple but striking colour palette and basic animation, it is great to look at. What’s more, the character models and stripped-back UI enhance the eerie and melancholy nature of the gameplay. However, the best visual element is the comic strip-style attack animation. The in-your-face and OTT imagery is incredible to observe. The slick and stylish approach works wonderfully with the demonic plot and the oppressive setting.

This is then complemented by the awesome audio. The subtle but creepy music supports the action perfectly. Furthermore, the loud and crass sound effects add a dramatic layer. In short, the developers have done an amazing job of bringing this hellish world to life.

Pick your cards and plan your approach.
Which card will you play?

Excellent controls.

Nadir: A Grimdark Deckbuilder works perfectly on both PC and Steam Deck. What’s more, I’ve heard nothing but good things about the Nintendo Switch port. Thanks to the minimalist UI and the excellent tutorial, you’ll enjoy the action immediately. However, mastering the finer points is no mean feat and takes a bit of effort. Yet, once you understand the fundamentals, you’ll love the clever layout and the intuitive controls.

As it’s a roguelike title, you know it is moreish and addictive. Accordingly, it’s hard to put down and has masses of replay value and longevity. With 3 characters to select from and an array of demons to study and defeat, each playthrough differs. On top of this, the opportunity to keep playing after you slay the demon makes it irresistible for hardcore gamers.

Nadir: A Grimdark Deckbuilder is a fresh take on a well-trodden genre.

Rarely do you experience a fresh take on a classic genre. However, Nadir: A Grimdark Deckbuilder was a pleasant surprise. With interesting mechanics and a grim and sinister atmosphere, it’s impressive to play. What’s more, its complex structure is deceptively simple once you get to grips with it. Consequently, I loved it and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you enter the gates of hell and survive? Study the cards, plan your approach, and defeat every demonic being.

7 Movies With Realistic Hacking

0

Despite the ubiquity of digital technology in the 21st century, few people understand how hacking actually works — which is why so many movies feature hacking sequences where some geek shouts about entering the mainframe. Hacking is so horribly misrepresented in mainstream media that true tech experts are surprised when a show or film gets the process right. If you are eager to see realistic hacking in action, you might find a place to watch any of the following seven movies, which are highly regarded as showing hacking how it actually is.

WarGames

The first hacking movie is also perhaps the most famous hacking movie — and it just so happens to be among the best hacking movies in terms of realism. Though no military defense strategy has ever involved a game-loving AI-driven supercomputer, the truth is that teens dedicated to computers in the 1980s and ‘90s could be considered world-class experts in hacking and that many had the skills and knowledge to infiltrate high-level systems. Still, there are many elements of this movie that make the hacking a bit unrealistic, even in 1983 when it was released.

Who am I?

Experts around the world agree that this German movie released in 2014 is by far the most realistic representation of the world of hacking and cybersecurity to date. Following a cybersecurity expert who gets pulled into a life of black-hat hacking, the film manages to balance excitement and intrigue with accurate depictions of the hacker’s lifestyle and activities. What’s more, many audience members attest to learning about cybersecurity from “Who am I?” which is more than many articles and trainings about cybersecurity can claim.

Blackhat

Starring Chris Hemsworth in a role as a convicted cybercriminal — a step outside his usual role as gorgeous hero — this 2015 movie showcases how the “bad guys” and the “good guys” in the realm of cybersecurity often have identical skills. The story pulls from real-life tales of black-hat hackers being caught and serving their sentence by offering their expertise to enhance cybersecurity. Interestingly, this film does highlight a way that cyberwarfare might evolve in the coming years and how hacking could be a critical skill not just for digital security but for international peace.

Hackers

Though the computer systems in use in this 1995 cult classic might be a bit outdated, the culture and language of the hackers remains surprisingly spot-on. Inspired by many stories of tweens and teens in the ‘80s and ‘90s responsible for devastating malware attacks, “Hackers” accurately depicts the fun and excitement that many hackers feel when they play around with computers. Though the psychedelic visuals may obscure the rather mundane process of hacking, the movie remains a favorite amongst cybersecurity pros.

Sneakers

This film from 1992 is one of the first and only movies to showcase penetration testers, whose job focuses on testing an organization’s defenses to find weaknesses before black-hat hackers can launch successful attacks that cause harm. The film talks at length about early methods of cybersecurity that are still widely used today, like encryption, and various methods of hacking are put on display, to include social engineering and phreaking. Fun to watch and also informative, “Sneakers” could be a useful introduction to business leaders who need to be convinced to invest in managed cybersecurity solutions.

23

Another German film, and another film from the 1990s, this movie is the first on the list to be based on a specific true story, in which a group of young computer users in Hannover perform escalating acts of hacking and eventually infiltrate government and military systems. Though the film does take some liberties to tell a more interesting story, the truth is that many hacking groups to this day begin as friends with shared interests and skills.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

Unlike other films on this list, David Fincher’s outstanding adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s mystery novel does not make hacking its primary focus, but Lisbeth Salander’s hacking skills are undeniably accurate to real life. What makes this movie rank especially high in realism is the lack of aesthetic visuals used during the hacking sequences, as hacking almost never utilizes glamorous interfaces; rather, hackers either use the same tools that are available to everyone or else have functional solutions that they alone understand how to use.

Almost everyone has a digital device that they use every day, but almost no one has the skills and knowledge to function as a hacker. Perhaps watching the above films will convince more people to practice hacking — or else to install high-quality cybersecurity tools on all their devices.
