The PD200X microphone feels very solid and looks really great – it’s really well made!

Setting it up is very easy – you can attach it to a microphone stand or arm and connect whichever cable (USB or XLR) that you wish to use with it.

There is a 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom as well which makes it easy to hear just what the microphone is picking up.

There is a mute button that you can use to quickly mute and unmute and there is a coloured indictor that shows the status. Muting only works with the USB connection though, not if you are using XLR.

There is a 2-in-1 control knob that can be used for a variety of fucntions, including mic gain, mode switching and headphone volume.

There is also an RGB switch that can be used to select either a set colour mode or dynamic mode. This is a great feature if you are using the microphone for streaming and you are on camera, it really adds to the look.

Maono Link is a piece of software you can install and use on either Windows or a Mac that enables you to change and tweak various audio settings. It’s worth installing this and playing around with the various settings to get it all perfectly set up for whatever your needs are.

The quality of the mic is excellent – it was very clear speaking into it and it was very easy to use.

The box contains a USB cable – if you want to connect the microphone using XLR then you will need to provide an XLR cable as one isn’t supplied – although you can by the PD200X with an XLR cable as a pack from Moano.

Their products focus on safety, usability, and visibility. Consequently, I wasn’t surprised by the exceptional build quality and the straightforward approach of the Faro Smart helmet. Additionally, the excellent navigation remote enhanced an already top-notch experience.

Don’t go it alone!

If you read the manual, you’ll enjoy the straightforward and easy-to-follow setup. However, if you go it alone, the Faro Smart helmet may outwit you. Accordingly, I recommend following the instructions. By installing the excellent U1 Faro app, you cannot go wrong. This device uses Bluetooth to connect to your phone and the navigation remote. As such, after a short charging period, you are good to go.

Technical aspects.

A cycling helmet must be comfortable, bright, and compliant with many safety aspects. Thankfully, the Faro Smart helmet ticks these boxes and many, many more. Fully certified to CPSC and EN10 standards, you know that this device will keep your head safe if you have an accident. Furthermore, it uses the MIPS safety system to enhance your protection further. Subsequently, I chose this helmet as I wanted a device that minimised the risk to my health. Thankfully, I believe that I will be better protected from the effects of concussion and other brain injuries than if I were to use a standard non-MIPS helmet.

Another incredible safety feature is the integrated light system. The striking white front-facing LED and the vivid red rear light illuminate to create a generous hue. In addition, you can alter the lighting display and enhance the rear visibility if you use the app. Alongside the rear light bar is the ability to illuminate the hidden lights. This was a fantastic design choice that created an unusual but vibrant effect. Consequently, you will stand out from other road users and this will increase your safety.

Making the most of the app is an essential feature of this helmet. First, it indicates the remaining battery life. This is essential, as no one likes to be caught short when on extended rides. Second, you can customise your light setup. I adored the number of options at my disposal and the features that I would have otherwise missed. Additionally, it allows you to create a power-friendly mode without compromising your visibility. Alternatively, you can go loud and proud, and it’ll highlight how long your battery will last.

Alongside this, you can adjust the navigation remote settings and the weather monitoring feature. Subsequently, if you wish, you can select that the helmet works harder for you in fog or rain. This was a great idea as it optimises your battery usage whilst enhancing your visibility during troublesome weather fronts.

The pièce de résistance, however, is the Crash Detection system. If you connect the Faro Smart helmet to your phone, and it detects that you have come to an abrupt stop, it will ask you if you are ok. You have a set time to reply to the helmet via the app. However, if you are immobilised due to an accident, the app will automatically contact an emergency contact with your GPS location. Therefore, if you were to be knocked off your bike, and no one could help, a loved one could contact the emergency services to get you the help you need.

Who’d have thought that such a small device would be such a game-changer? This incredible handlebar accessory allows you to show other road users your intentions with plenty of time. Accordingly, this should reduce the likelihood of a collision as well as the frustrations between cyclists and car users.

The navigation remote links to your Faro Smart helmet via Bluetooth. As such, the connection is stable, responsive, and has a low power draw. Furthermore, you can adjust the activation time and whether the cancellation of any indication is automatic or manual. This was phenomenal, as it increases your safety without undermining any of the other lighting segments. By appearing in the hidden lighting segment, the indication panel makes clear and definitive instructions to any other road users who are behind you. Therefore, if you utilise this feature and use traditional signalling methods, your safety will be improved.

Build quality.

I adored the technical aspects of this helmet. However, the build quality impressed me more. The Faro Smart helmet is surprisingly heavy, but it isn’t uncomfortable or cumbersome. Consequently, you won’t feel weighed down, and it is perfect for short or longer rides. The excellent boa system enables you to adjust the band size to enhance your comfort. 

What’s more, the urban ventilation system prevents your head from becoming overheated. This reduces sweat during long training sessions and enables the softer materials to stay cleaner for longer. Alongside this, a strong magnetic clip replaces the traditional buckle method. This incredible design choice was easy to adjust and straightforward to use.

So, the Faro Smart helmet is easy to adjust and comfortable to wear. However, surely a helmet with lights will be tough to activate and suffer in the rain? Well, no! This waterproof helmet suffers no ill effects when used in all weather conditions. Furthermore, the charging port has a rubberised bung to prevent water ingress. Consequently, you can rest assured that this can be used if you are an all-weather rider. As for the power button, it makes a delightful clicking sound whenever you use it correctly. Subsequently, you know the device is powered on and off by the sound it makes and the familiar shutting-off and activation lighting pattern.

The Faro Smart helmet comes loaded with high-end tech. Moreover, it is stunning to look at and it is revolutionary in the way it tackles your safety. Review: Xuan-Yuan Sword: Mists Beyond the Mountains

I’ve been on a bit of an RPG kick lately. A few months ago I was on a run of short, snacky and mostly roguelite games. I began to crave something a little meatier. Something where I wouldn’t be forced to watch my failures pile up in inverse proportion to my remaining sanity. Something with level up dings and incrementing stats and that won’t be polished off in a lunch break. So when the lengthily titled Xuan-Yuan Sword: Mists Beyond the Mountains plopped into my inbox I was intruiged.

I’d never heard of it or the series it belongs to. Partly because I’ve not shown much interest in turn-based RPGs for a while but mostly because I can’t read Chinese. The series has been going on for quite some time, with the most recent being number seven in 2021. Today’s subject is a little older – it was first released in 1999, and has now been touched up for PC and Switch. It poses a question. Given that very little has been done to it, how should I approach a game to review that released when I was only six years old?

History (But Not)

I think the best approach is just to assess it like a museum piece and see how its various original elements hold up. Let’s start with the writing – something that should be (mostly) timeless. Well, Xuan-Yuan Sword: Mists Beyond the Mountains opens with our main man Septem, a Frankish knight currently in Venice, searching for a way to avoid war in his home country. Venice is currently in the grip of Tempar control, however, who are roughing up merchants and blocking trade. Then an old bloke draws a pentagram on an altar and summons a demon from hell named ‘Nicole’ and we throw the history book straight into the rubbish bin. This is a story about God and Satan, that casually strolls through ancient history.

As a plot device, it’s not half-bad. While I’m not too interested in listening to people banging on about their religions, the nature of the plot takes us all over the place. Septem’s quest to find something to end conflict continually changes the more he studies, so we end up traipsing from Venice, through Arabia before ending up in ancient China. Also, hell. That’s down to his constant conflict with demons. It’s nice seeing the scenery change as we go, though unfortunately the writing behind the plot rather lets things down a bit.

There’s two reasons for this. The first is a simple one: the translation isn’t that great. Not the worst I’ve seen, though. Still, it’s enough for characters to all start sounding a little off and robotic, which isn’t great for characterisation. It’s also probably why Septem comes across as a jerk, making it inexplicable why everyone immediatly falls for him. The writing also suffers from an exposition issue. Characters will regularly vomit descriptions of the current world situation at you, like they’ve memorised the first paragraph of the Wikipedia page.

Wait Your Turn

It’s a tell don’t show world. I ended up completely losing track of the plot as new names were thrown out and characters came and went. The core group of characters weren’t bad, but Xuan-Yuan Sword: Mists Beyond the Mountains never stayed still long enough to let them breathe. Still, maybe we’ll have a better time focusing on the combat. It’s turn-based, with an ‘Active Time Battle’ element, where your characters can only strike when their agility bar is full. It works pretty well and did hit some old school nostalgia buttons for me. It’s nice to play a turn-based game that hasn’t been messed with.

It does bring along a host of issues from the past though. The first is random encounters. Admittedly, this is par for the course. I do hate it when games don’t let us dodge the encounters though. Xuan-Yuan Sword: Mists Beyond the Mountains loves pushing you into labyrinths – going so far as to give you items that help you escape – then ramping up the encounters. So if you blunder down the wrong way, it’ll take you two or three fights to get back to where you were. Double that for the world map. Given the rather loose instructions for goals, this can be very frustrating.

The second big issue is also endemic to the genre: the balance is all over the place. The first two thirds are relatively stable, a little easy even, with a few intense spikes in the boss fights. Then in the last third, bosses begin breaking out the one-hit-kill attacks out of nowhere, turning every fight into a roll of the dice. I ended up walking away at the final boss for just this reason. Still, at least grinding is pretty quick. The battle animations are fast and smooth, which makes the smaller fights zoom past. Thank the Lord.

Time Capsule

It’s not devoid of good ideas. There’s a nice capture mechanic, where you can capture monsters from the battlefield and equip them – or throw them at your other enemies. You can then fuse them with items to make stronger monsters. It’s neat, and adds a little something. There’s also a frankly staggering amount of enemy variety, which draws from both western and eastern mythology. Only a handful are re-skins too, which is impressive. The graphics in general aren’t too bad. It works hard to keep the different regions as distinct as possible.

It’s for this reason that I was originally quite happy with Xuan-Yuan Sword: Mists Beyond the Mountains. But as I went through, the combat, the labyrinths and the writing began to wear me down. Then there are the weird re-release bits. Audio seems overly compressed at times and the cutscenes (the ones that don’t use late nineties 3D at least) seem to be running at 240p. In the end, all the good will I had towards it seemed to dribble out, leaving me a little saddened at the end. I wanted an RPG but not like this. Not like this.

Additionally, it takes some exceptional twists and turns and there are some stomach-churning decisions to be made.

I adored the science fiction setting. Floating around in space whilst completing tasks never gets old. What’s more, the relationship between the crew twists and turns depending on the choices you make. Furthermore, exploring derelict ships whilst fighting for your life was a thrilling experience.

If you’ve played a narrative-driven or FMV game, you’ll love the familiar mechanics. The Expanse: A Telltale Series balances its cinematic QTEs, dialogue choices, and exploration perfectly. Accordingly, you never tire of each element and this was great. Additionally, the enchanting lore and grim setting draw you into this horrifically oppressive universe. Consequently, every dig and backhanded compliment makes sense as the crews’ relationships hang in the balance.

This element of the game is optional, but it does open up otherwise unobtainable snippets of each character’s background.

What may disappoint Telltale fans is the surprisingly short episodes. Though I appreciated the breath-taking atmosphere and the perfectly timed events, I could have happily endured more of the same. Thankfully, though, as I have the Deluxe edition, I can enjoy an additional chapter that will be missed by “Standard Edition” owners. Accordingly, I strongly recommend investing in the Deluxe version.

Everyone is space-mad at the moment. Starfield has generated hype on top of hype. Consequently, The Expanse: A Telltale Series has hit the market at the right time. This semi-open world title allows you to roam each small area to your heart’s content. Whilst doing this, you must use your jetpack to leap chasms and traverse shafts. This animation is wonderfully smooth and the ability to rotate is exceptionally well done. On top of this, the environment feels vast, even though the locations are claustrophobic and small.

Alongside this, the cinematic is fantastic. Amusingly, though, the lip-syncing is occasionally off, but it’s mostly a success. What’s more, the QTEs are well-considered, and I enjoyed the breakaway from the slower-paced dialogue.

Talking of dialogue, the acting is spectacular! An FMV/narrative game lives or dies by its audio. Thankfully, The Expanse: A Telltale Series has a wonderful cast of actors that deliver every piece of cinematic to a high standard. Additionally, the excellent sound effects enhance the sci-fi theme without ruining the oppressive and dramatic undertones.

Review: Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy

Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy is a welcome addition to this much-loved franchise. However, if this happens to be your first attempt at a Trine game, you needn’t worry. Thankfully, no experience is necessary, and you won’t feel alienated by a lack of knowledge. Furthermore, there are some pleasant recaps that help to fill in some of the blanks.

This humorous 2.5D platform title was developed by Frozenbyte and published by THQ Nordic. Moreover, its colourful world is full of puzzles and the occasional fight. Consequently, it unravels at a familiar pace, and that was fine by me. What’s more, it can be enjoyed solo or with another 2 players, both locally or online.

Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy tells a shallow but funny story.

The Trine franchise is renowned for its witty dialogue and whacky storylines. Thankfully, Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy doesn’t let you down. However, after its initial outburst of madness, the action plateaus and doesn’t evolve. Consequently, if you expect a lore-rich endeavour, you’ll be disappointed. Yet, if you like childish humour, then this will be right up your alley.

The trio of Amadeus, Pontius, and Zoya are a force to be reckoned with. This mage, warrior, and thief must work together to overcome every obstacle and maintain their hero status. However, this is challenged when they are tricked by Lady Sunny. Using their vanity as a weapon, the diabolical Lady Sunny attempts to steal their powers. However, the trio escape and set off on a journey to thwart her crazy plans.

Excellent mechanics.

Where Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy shines is its excellent gameplay mechanics. No matter if you play this solo or with 2 others, you’ll adore the action that unfolds. Each of the heroes has a set of skills that overcome an array of obstacles. Furthermore, each of the protagonists can be used to kill the smattering of enemies that you face.

The mage can conjure a box or a platform to bridge chasms. Whereas, the warrior can use his shield to protect himself and deflect items. Finally, the thief can use her bow to connect objects together or use a rope to swing between rings. Accordingly, the three characters must work in harmony to overcome every problem and progress through the standard platforming world.

Upgrades and fighting.

Another excellent idea was the upgrade and collectable feature. As you explore each level, you will stumble across gems and immovable objects. These 2 elements are key to character progression, longevity, and replay value. As you gather the gems, you will unlock upgrade points. These points can be spent on unique skills for each of the heroes. However, there is a caveat, as many of the new features can only be unlocked once you’ve progressed far enough.

This was a great idea, as it prevented you from investing in unnecessary skills. Moreover, there are multiple ways to complete each puzzle, and having too many tools at your disposal could complicate matters. I adored the new skills as they gave each character a fresh method to overcome obstacles. Additionally, once new abilities are unlocked, you can return to discover hidden paths and otherwise unreachable locations.

The fighting element was disappointing. The developers have invested plenty of effort into the puzzles and the script that the combat appears as an afterthought. Consequently, no matter what difficulty setting you choose, the fighting is mundane and 1 dimensional.

Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy looks fantastic.

Visually, Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy looks crisp and striking. I adored the vivid colours and the excellent stage design. Moreover, the animation was fantastic, and the cinematic was great. On top of this, I experienced no performance issues, and the old-school side-scrolling approach worked particularly well.

The audio was just as good! The whimsy soundtrack is upbeat, infectious, and great to listen to. What’s more, the acting is dry, amusing, and will work with many demographics. Alongside this, the unusual sound effects add to the fantasy element without being too loud or in your face.

Superb controls.

The superb control system supports the fun and rewarding gameplay. An intuitive UI ensures that the action is smooth and easy to understand. Moreover, the button layout is fantastic, and I had no issues with input lag. This was essential, as many of the puzzles require intricate and accurate movement. As such, the developers have done a great job of making this accessible no matter your skill set. 

Thanks to the upgrade system and the hidden pathways, there are plenty of reasons to keep playing. On top of this, you’ll enjoy a unique experience if you play this solo or with 2 friends. As such, Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy oozes longevity and replay value. 

Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy is a fantastic sequel. 

Though a 5th instalment may be seen as overkill, I loved what I saw. Yes, the mechanics and the jokes were familiar, but this mattered not. I loved the enhanced difficulty and the brilliant upgrade tree. Moreover, the puzzles were fascinating and clever and will make you think. As such, I loved this game and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you hunt down the demonic Lady Sunny and save the day? Upgrade your equipment, work as a team, and don’t let anything stop you.

Review: Full Quiet

Full Quiet is a port of a NES classic. As such, this old-school title will fill many gamers with a sense of nostalgia. Moreover, its retro concept has been wonderfully reworked to perform well on modern machines. However, it hasn’t lost any of its pixelated charm, harsh gameplay, or unique puzzles.

This open-world/Metroidvania experience was developed by Retrotainment Games and published by 8-Bit Legit. What’s more, it has a wicked day/night cycle and oodles of enemies to destroy. Accordingly, it is unbelievably harsh and wonderfully clever in equal measure.

Full Quiet tells a strange story.

As a parent, you’ll do anything for your children. However, this statement is put to the test in Full Quiet! The protagonist’s son has gone missing. Sadly, the environment is deadly and the creatures are worse still. Additionally, the communication relay has failed and the world is full of many challenging mysteries. Accordingly, you must work hard if you want to see your son alive again.

This is the strange and depressing story that underpins Full Quiet. This daunting task is made much harder by the cryptic puzzles and the often confusing world you must traverse. Moreover, there are tough creatures that must be killed if you wish to proceed. On top of this, you must dodge, leap, and avoid a range of deadly traps as you attempt to restore the relay grid.

Metroidvania mechanics.

Though the developers insist on this being an open-world title, I’m convinced it’s a Metroidvania experience. First, there is plenty of back and forth and a daunting world to explore. Second, you must unlock new gear and weapons if you wish to proceed past certain points. Finally, it will break your balls repeatedly as you die over and over again. As such, this is textbook Metroidvania, and I loved it as a consequence.

The incredible drip-fed elements and daunting world help to create an uncomfortable and sinister atmosphere. What’s more, the cruel puzzles and cryptic clues often lead to confusion and plenty of exploration. Accordingly, there is a sense of suspense and fear as you delve deeper into this dangerous world.

Can you use the radio?

Exceptional puzzles.

If you don’t enjoy challenging puzzles, then Full Quiet may not be for you. However, I loved the cryptic nature of each problem. Alongside this, I adored the notes that you discovered and the incredible day/evening/night cycle. The focus on finding a new camp/save point and discovering new equipment and supplies was fantastic. Yet, I can understand why this approach will frustrate less patient gamers.

Unfortunately, a lack of hand-holding generates a layer of unforgiving frustration. Furthermore, the deliberate veil of mystery will make you scream with rage. As such, this is a game that will make you curse as you push yourself too hard. Subsequently, you must balance a desire to rush from point A to point B with a desire to solve problems, kill enemies, and find the next campsite.

Full Quiet is a pixelated dream.

Remakes can undermine the original design of much-loved games. Thankfully, though, this porting of Full Quiet retains its excellent pixelated finish. Moreover, it has a wonderfully garish art style and rudimentary animation. Accordingly, it is a phenomenal nostalgic experience that can be enjoyed on any modern machine (PlayStation to be announced soon). Where this excels, is its excellent stage design. Though the world is often confusing, I adored its varied biomes and cruel creatures.

The audio is just as fantastic. The excellent synth soundtrack is beautifully dated and wonderfully shrill. Furthermore, the basic and flat sound of your gun won’t disappoint. Instead, you’ll adore the step-down memory lane as you relive this classic NES experience.

Why so challenging?

A lack of hand-holding is my biggest gripe. I don’t mind a challenging experience, but a lack of guidance was frustrating. This issue comes to the fore when you die because of a lack of guidance. Additionally, the puzzles should have been better explained as the basic mechanics are often overlooked. However, other than these issues, the game handles well and the UI and controller setup were great.

Full Quiet is surprisingly vast and in-depth. Consequently, you’ll be amazed at how long this takes to complete. If you then account for the challenging puzzles and the brutal creatures, this oozes both replay value and longevity.

Full Quiet is a great retro experience.

8-Bit Legit focuses on amazing retro experiences. Thankfully, their latest endeavour doesn’t let them down. This incredible NES port/remake ticks every box. Furthermore, it is a fascinating step-down memory lane. Therefore, if you want a dated but challenging time, I recommend that you buy it here! Can you save your son? Restore the radio grid, overcome the puzzles, and kill anything that moves.
