Toshiba Announces Wipe Technology for Self Encrypting Disk Drives

0

Toshiba have just announced a new a new Wipe technology for their self encrypting disk drives that can security erase your data when powered-down or removed.

Toshiba WIPE

Here is the full press release:

TOSHIBA ANNOUNCES WIPE TECHNOLOGY FOR SELF-ENCRYPTING DISK DRIVES

New Technology Improves Data Security And Reduces The Risk Of Data Leakage Associated With Document Image Data Stored On Copier And Printer Systems

TOKYO, Japan, August 10, 2010 — Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) today announced Wipe for Toshiba Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) models, a technology that allows special security capabilities, such as the world’s first[1] ability for sensitive user data to be securely erased when a system is powered-down or when a SED HDD is removed from the system. The feature can also be used to securely erase user data prior to returning a leased system, system disposal or re-purposing. Wipe was created as an enhancement to Toshiba’s Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) hard disk drives.

Toshiba announced its latest 2.5” 7200rpm SED HDD model in July 2010, to address the increasing need for IT departments to comply with privacy laws and regulations governing data security. Designed to the Trusted Computing Group “Opal” Specification, Toshiba’s SED models provide advanced access security and on-board encryption for client systems such as notebook computers.
But lost or stolen notebooks are not the only security risk that IT departments must address. Today, most office copier and printing systems utilize HDD capacity and performance to deliver a highly productive document imaging environment. Many organizations are now realizing the critical importance of maintaining the security of document image data stored within copier and printer systems. Wipe is a technology that can automatically invalidate an HDD security key when its power supply is turned off, instantly making all data in the drive indecipherable. Toshiba’s innovative new Wipe Technology adds advanced storage security features to enable system makers to transparently and automatically secure private data.

Copier and Printer systems vendors can now use Toshiba’s Wipe Technology to securely invalidate sensitive document image data by automatically erasing the SED’s internal encryption key. This feature can easily be used prior to system disposal or re-purposing to ensure that private data never leaves the control of the responsible business unit or IT department.

Toshiba’s Wipe Technology may be used to set data invalidation attributes for multiple data ranges. This flexibility provides systems designers with a powerful set of data security capabilities that can be easily incorporated into existing system architecture. Attributes include …

– Data encryption and secure invalidation on power cycle.

– Data encryption and preservation on power cycle.

In addition to sensitive data stored on client PCs and removable storage devices, many organizations realize that security of “data at rest” must also extend to document images stored on the hard disk drives within copier and printer systems. Toshiba’s innovative new Wipe Technology provides advanced storage security features to enable systems makers to transparently and automatically secure private data on office copiers, printers and other types of business imaging systems.

As someone interested in security, this drive is very appealing (and cool) and I look forward to getting my hands on one soon.

So keep your eyes on the Toshiba website for more information soon.

KeepVault New Features Now Available

Proxure, the makers of the KeepVault add-in for Windows Home Server announced some new features last week and they have been in touch to say they are now available.

Hot on the heels of the Windows Home Server Code Name Vail support news recently comes another announcement.

Here is what Proxure has to say:

The success of the ‘KeepVault Pro & Business’ (www.keepvaultpro.com) solution is its ground-up design targeting small to medium businesses (SMB); easy to setup with no special IT skills required, almost no maintenance thanks to its automatic operation, and it is significantly cheaper than the competition with prices starting at under $7/month. Most other SMB vendors try to re-purpose highly technical enterprise solutions, resulting in a poor user experience and high prices with hidden bandwidth and per seat fees.

Importantly we also listen to our customers and we continue to improve our service based on their feedback; which has helped to shape these new SMB features:

Enhanced Administrator Control & Reporting

Ensuring data is secure and that backups are functioning successfully is of particular importance to business owners, where any loss of data can jeopardize their company. The KeepVault Pro & Business software ‘admin lock feature’ prevents unauthorized changes to settings that control, amongst other things, the what, when, where of backup, and how much bandwidth each device uses.  These controls are now enhanced with the new ‘web-based admin console’ which provides an overall backup status report as well as health reports for each device being protected.  The administrator or account owner can review (per device) the date of the last backup, device status, and the amount currently protected.  These reports are in addition to the existing automated ‘health’ notifications via SMS, email, and Twitter.

Access to data via the web is included at no additional cost for ‘Pro & Business’ users. The new admin console allows the administrator to control web access, greatly enhancing  overall security.  Web access control and backup ‘health’ reporting can be managed on a ‘sub user account’ basis for extra flexibility.

Sub User Accounts

Securing sensitive financial data, personnel or patient records, or product roadmaps is now a lot easier with the Sub Account feature. As the name suggests, account owners/administrators can now create sub accounts within their main account, easily letting them section-off data for different departments within the company and prevent unauthorized access. Best of all we’ve kept it really simple and easy to use, no complicated permissions rules to manage or keep in-sync. For example, a 100GB account could be subdivided with 20GB for the accounting department, 30GB for senior management, 50GB for marketing etc. As needs change, those storage amounts can be increased or decreased with the click of a button. Usage, status, web access can all be tracked by sub account.

I have been using KeepVault Pro for a number of months now and have been very happy with it and am very happy to see some new features.

Expect a full review soon.

Converting Windows Media Center TV shows to play on the iPad

Ian over at the Digital Lifestyle.com has posted an article on how he converts his Media Center TV shows to play on his iPad following discussions we all had on the Media Center Show a few weeks ago.

    TDL logo

Here is how Ian starts the article:

When you get a new toy like the iPad you want to integrate it with the rest of your setup which for me means getting it to play nicely with Windows Media Center. Out of box there is no easy way to get recorded TV across to the iPad but it’s not completely impossible. I am sure there are many different ways of tackling the problem but I am just going to look at one solution for now. There method I am using is one that we discussed on The Media Center Show a couple of weeks ago called Aleesoft, this application is designed to convert video files to iPad, iPhone or iPod formant.

Aleesoft is pretty simple to use, you just select the files or folders you want converting and it will create an mp4 versions of the files. If you have a ripped DVD you can point Aleesoft at the folder and it will convert the vob files to mp4 which you can then add to iTunes and send to your device, it will also convert other video files and this is where it can work with Media Center.

You can read his full article here and please leave him some comments on what you use, if anything.

PCM – Pulse-code modulation (PCM) is a method used to digitally represent sampled analog signals, which was invented by Alec Reeves in 1937. It is the standard form for digital audio in computers and various Compact Disc and DVD formats, as well as other uses such as digital telephone systems. A PCM stream is a digital representation of an analog signal, in where the magnitude of the analogue signal is sampled regularly at uniform intervals, with each sample being quantized to the nearest value within a range of digital steps.  PCM streams have two basic properties that determine their fidelity to the original analog signal: the sampling rate, which is the number of times per second that samples are taken; and the bit-depth, which determines the number of possible digital values that each sample can take.

LPCM – LPCM is used for the lossless encoding of audio data in the compact disc

An update for Windows Home Server v1 will be released on August 24, 2010

    WHS Pic

John “Diehard” Zajdler from the Home Server Show just called me and sent me a link for an update of WHS v1 that we can expect to see in a few weeks. This update seems to address some of the issues that have come up since Power Pack 3 was introduced.

An update for Windows Home Server is available: August 24, 2010

(979453) – Introduces four issues that are fixed in update (June 22, 2010) for Windows Home Server. These issues were found since the release of Windows Home Server Power Pack 3.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/979453

Thank you John for the call and link!

Microsoft states on the web page:

The following issues are fixed in this update.

    Issue 1

You cannot restore a client computer without manually creating partitions or mapping the source and destination volume.
After you install this update, you can restore a client computer without manually creating partitions or mapping the source and destination volume. However, to enable this functionality, the following conditions must be true:

    • The backup must be stored on only one disk.
    • The destination computer must have only one hard disk.
    • The hard disk in the destination computer must be equal to or larger in size than the backup.
    • The hard disk drive in the destination computer must be an internal hard disk drive. For example, IDE, SATA or e-SATA.
    Issue 2

2048-bit certificates will soon replace 1024-bit certificates. This update enables Home Server users to use 2048-bit certificates before 2048-bit certificates become the industry standard.
After you install this update, you are asked to renew Website certificates if you have already registered the live domain for the websites. After you finish the renewal process, the website certificates are upgraded to 2048-bit.

    Issue 3

You cannot change the backup settings if a volume that has backup-excluded folders is not available. In this situation, you must wait until the volume becomes available.
After you install this update, you can remove a missing volume that has backup-excluded folders from the backup process.

    Issue 4

You cannot remove all users’ permissions from a shared folder. When you try to remove the permissions, the Windows Home Server console reports that the operation succeeds. However, the permissions are not removed.
After you install this update, you can successfully remove all users’ permissions from a shared folder. If you tried to perform this operation before you install this update, the permissions will be removed when you restart the computer after you install this update.

    Issue 5

You may experience incompatibility issues when you use the next version of Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows Home Server. This is a precautionary update. Windows Home Server is currently not supported by the next version of Microsoft Security Essentials Beta or final release. This update will address some incompatibility issues.

Review of the TomTom App for the iPhone

If you do a lot of driving you probably have a satnav – if you have an iPhone why not combine the two. That’s where the new TomTom app for the iPhone comes in.

    TomTom logo

I do a lot of driving for both work and when visiting people, and if I am going somewhere that I have never been to before I like to use my satnav. Over the years I have had different satnavs from TomTom, Navigon and others – in fact my current satnav is from Navigon.

The biggest problem I have with it is the time it takes to find and lock on to the satellites – sometimes taking up to 20 minutes (and according to Navigon that is perfectly normal).

So rather than buy another satnav, I figured I would try the app for the iPhone and see if that was any good – especially considering that is a lot cheaper than buying a whole device.

    WHAT ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS?

  • New, updated maps

Because on average 15% of roads change every year, your TomTom app comes with the latest and most up-to-date map, ready to navigate. No mobile signal or data plan is required to browse your map and navigate to your destination.

  • HD Traffic™

Get the most up-to-date, real-time traffic information for your route live on your TomTom app. Includes detailed incident reports, estimated delay times and alternative route proposals (Available via in app purchase).

  • Advanced Lane Guidance

Clearly shows which lane to take at junctions so you don’t miss your turning. On the most difficult highway intersections, realistic 3D representation of the junction keeps you relaxed and safe.

  • IQ Routes™ technology

Only TomTom uses actual speed data collected from millions of users to calculate the fastest routes at any point in time. Imagine a route that takes into account rush hour, traffic lights, zebra crossings, school exits or even shopping crowds, every minute of every day. That’s how smart IQ Routes is!

You can learn more about the benefits of TomTom here.

    COMPATABILITY

If you have an iPhone 4 or 3GS then you can use the turn-by-turn functionality as those models have built in GPS, if you have an older model then you will need to buy the TomTom car kit.

I have an iPhone 4 so I don’t need the car kit for that functionality.

    BUYING THE APP

Buying the app is just the same as buying any app for the iPhone – you have to do it through the Apple App Store.

Do a search in the app store for TomTom and you will be shown everything that is available.

    23-07-2010 11-27-28

In my case, I wanted the UK & Ireland maps (the application is the same, but you need to make sure you choose the maps you want).

    23-07-2010 11-28-04

So I paid for the app and waited for the download – which was a little over 350 MB.

    23-07-2010 11-30-37 23-07-2010 11-30-49

Once it had download I just connected up my iPhone 4 and waited for it to sync.

    23-07-2010 13-05-30

    STARTING THE APP

On your iPhone you will have a new entry for the software – in my case UK – Ireland.

    IMG_0006

    Just tap it to launch.

    IMG_0007

The first time you are asked if it could use your current location – I found this quite amusing – if you said no how would be able to use the functionality you just paid for?

    IMG_0008

Then you have the usual legal notices which you must agree to otherwise again you can’t use it!

    IMG_0009

  • More AR Drone from Parrot Videos

A few more videos of the AD Drone from Parrot have surfaced – included one showing the Drone being controlled via an iPad.

As you may know, I am really looking forward to getting my hands on the AR Drone from Parrott after seeing it at CES this year, and with the news of the pre-ordering recently the excitement is building.

A few more videos have surfaced I thought I would share:
