Ashes Crickets 2013 Delayed Until November This Year

0

505 Games, today announced the delay of the heavily anticipated Ashes Cricket 2013 video game. Originally scheduled for release on PC and the Wii U, PS3, Xbox 360 to coincide with the 1st Ashes series of 2013 in the United Kingdom, the release has been delayed to November 2013 when the return series starts in Australia.

ashes_cricket_2013

Tim Woodley, Senior Vice President Global Brand & Marketing for 505 Games, said: “It is hugely disappointing that 505 Games has had to make this announcement today. We all had high hopes of bringing out a stellar cricket game during the first leg of this unprecedented Ashes year. But the fact of the matter is, we took a long hard look at the game as it stands and decided it simply wasn’t good enough in its current state. It was simply not worthy of the Ashes name.

“Unforeseen issues which developer Trickstar faced in latter stages of development have meant that they have been unable to do the requisite amount of polishing and fine-tuning which any game needs.

We owe it to ourselves, to our licensors, the ECB and Cricket Australia, but most of all to the dedicated cricket fans and gamers to put our best foot forward. “It is small compensation that we have the benefit of a second Ashes series in this unique cricketing year which affords us further time to work on the game and get it right for the return leg.

We are confident that the time between now and the second Ashes series will be enough to add the final polish we believe the game needs. We are committed, as we always have been, to releasing a great game and we are doing everything in our power to ensure this is the case.”

Two Big Updates Coming to GRID 2 from Codemasters

2

Codemasters has announced two game updates coming soon which have both been driven by that feedback. One is an extensive Community Patch which we hope will go a long way to improving everyone’s experience in the game. The other is a returning game mode from the original GRID which we’ll be releasing for free – we’re excited to let you know that Demo Derby is on its way to GRID 2!

Codemasters has really been listening to feedback immensely, for instance, in the previous patch your car ghosting when you’re applied with a corner cutting penalty is something that stemmed directly from feedback from the community. The next patch is full of further examples of features you’ve been asking for. We expect it to be released sometime in August, dependent on Submission timings and we’ll let you know a more specific date the closer we get.

But first, let’s talk about some of what will be coming in the Community Patch for the PS3,Xbox 360 and PC….

Grid 2 demo
Custom Playlist
We want to make the Custom Playlist a more worthwhile experience and as such we’ve made a change that increases the amount of experience and money you get for participating.

This will ensure that you are no longer penalised for wanting to opt out of the Online Playlists and you’ll now be able to race the way you want to race, with no hindrance to your online progression.
Hardcore Playlist
Codemasters has heard your feedback regarding the online playlists and once the patch hits there’ll be an additional playlist for you to select.

Called ‘Hardcore’, this playlist will remove the use of flashbacks and turn on full mechanical damage. It will also prioritise race events around circuits. Think you’re an elite racer? Go hardcore and prove it.
Level Cap
If you’ve hit level 30 online you’ll be pleased to know that we’re now giving you the ability to progress even further. The online level cap will be raised to 99…good luck!
Fastest Lap Times
The addition of fastest lap times is something we’ve heard come up again and again and as a result we’re pleased to confirm that they will now display at the end of an event on the race results screen while playing online.
New Liveries
We’ve loved seeing what you’ve created so far with your custom liveries and you’ll soon have access to a host of new designs, including some of the AI designs from single player.
Maximum Laps
We’ve heard a lot of feedback, especially from Clubs and Leagues, about the maximum number of laps you can set in a race. As a result we’ve increased the maximum from 5 up to 10. For those of you who want longer races we recommend using the Endurance game mode.
Veto Weighting
Previously if you wanted to veto an event type or location it turned out it was difficult to get a passing vote. We’ve made some changes to the system so that vetos are now much fairer and only require 51% of the lobby to make the vote for a change to occur.
Voice Option
As requested, you can now mute your own microphone.
Country Flags
We know many of you enjoyed this feature in the original GRID and we’re pleased to confirm it will make a return. A player’s country flag will now be displayed next to their name plate while racing and on the event results screen.
Clean Race Bonus
The amount of money rewarded for racing clean has been increased.
Skip the Level up Graphic
We understand that not everyone wants to watch the ‘level up box’ at the end of each race and you’ll now be able to skip this at the press of a button.

Anti-Cheat
We’ve also made some changes to our anti-cheat system and while we won’t go into detail about how we’ve approached these changes, what we will say is that we’re hopeful the leaderboards within the game will now be free of those who have to use illegitimate means to succeed.
Demolition Derby – The Return (and it’s free!)
The focus with GRID 2 was all about racing in a new world of competitive motorsport, both on and offline. But it’s fair to say many of our ‘old-school’ GRID players were disappointed about the lack of a Demo Derby mode in GRID 2. Today we’re pleased to tell you that we are currently working on this mode for GRID 2 we’ll be making it available for free, across all platforms.

Some things you may have missed lately:

We’ve made available the following three new cars for free:

Note: all PC players receive the free cars via an automatic game patch.

Unboxing and Configuring the NOW TV box (Video)

To show just how quick and easy it is to unbox, setup and configure, I made a short video:

Final Thoughts

If you looked at the NOW TV box and thought it looks a lot like a ROKU box you wouldn’t be wrong – it is a ROKU box. It does look a little plasticy (just like the remote control) but again, the overall cost is £9.99 (which includes postage and packing) so it doesn’t really have to look spectacular. It is very small though, measuring 84mm x 84mm x 24mm and weighing hardly anything at all!

Setting up the NOW TV box was simple and fast (just look at the video above) and I was streaming away in no time at all. One thing I was impressed with before I even plugged it in was that there was an HDMI cable in the box. This may not seem like a big deal but a lot of considerably more expensive devices don’t include one in the box, and so that just adds to the costs, thankfully not it this case.

The box is wireless only – which is great if you have a really strong wireless signal in the room you want to use it, but not great if you don’t! Because everything is streamed to the box over the Internet if you have a poor wireless signal you will get a lot of buffering, which will ruin your viewing pleasure.

If you don’t want to buy a subscription to Sky Sports or Sky Movies you don’t have to. You can use all the free services such as BBC iPlayer and Sky News. You can also easily add other services from the vast catalogue, all at the touch of a button on the controller.

If you do want to watch Sky Sports you can easily by a day pass for £9.99 a day, and Sky Movies is currently £8.99 a month, which will rise to £15 month, although there is a free 30 day trial as well.

I really liked the NOW TV box, it is extremely good value for money, easy to setup and use and breathes new life into your older TV. The only disappointment for me was that the maximum resolution is 720P, but for older TV’s this probably won’t be an issue as the older TV may not be able to go any higher.

So for £9.99 its a bargain and I highly recommend buying one today.

Review of Tour de France 2013: 100 Edition from Focus Home Interactive

0

There aren’t many games out there with the relatively tranquil settings of Tour de France that don’t promptly get completely destroyed. So for once you can enjoy the scenery whilst cycling around strategically to ensure victory rather than killing thousands upon thousands of nameless evildoers. So perhaps Tour de France 2013 could be a welcome change of pace.

After quite a lengthy install you are presented with the game’s main menu. It very quickly becomes painfully apparent that you’re not going to have much room for freedom on this game. Aside from the usual options and credits there is “Play Game”, “Load Game” and “Cycling Coach”. Cycling coach is the game’s, entirely text based, tutorial. It’s information you need to play the game properly but unfortunately the game makes no attempt to even suggest checking this out and truth be told reading it before actually playing the game makes little to no sense. There aren’t even helpful pictures or short video clips to demonstrate the information. As is so often the case with tutorials such as these playing the game first and losing so that then reading the tutorial actually makes sense seems the only real option available.

TDF2013_01
(Not representative of in-game footage)

Proceeding to play game presents you, first, with a choice of team. There are a lot of teams in Tour de France and there are more than enough to choose from. Each has different strengths and weaknesses which no doubt reflect the teams’ performance in real life. They are accompanied with fairly comprehensive stats for you to make your decision however likelihood is that first time round you’re knowledge of these stats will be insufficient to make an informed decision.

After you have picked your team you are presented with 4 different levels of goals, each more challenging and difficult than the last. Maybe they are, but any goal with Tour de France lingo involved was pretty much lost on me. But anyway I moved to the next choice which is the stages you will race on. I kept the default 7 stages but you can pick and choose how many stages will make up the season. If you want you can race on all 24 stages or only 1. It’s a simple solution that works by granting you control over what type of stages you want and therefore how long, and how difficult, the season will be. Last, and most definitely least, you pick yourself a tasty treat or two that your cyclist can enjoy on his journey. The food supplements seem like a good idea, each restoring your three stamina bars by varying amounts. In reality however, they make little to no difference. If you overuse one of your energy reserves some almond paste isn’t going to save the day and reverse your error.

Armed with your efficiently revitalising nut paste and no clue whatsoever as to if you picked the correct cyclist or team you finally get to your first stage. The first thing that will become blindingly obvious to all that can spell their own names is that the stages are long. Really, really long. As a test of human endurance I now have a whole new respect for the racers in Tour de France. One of the stages is a 200 Km ride followed by a mountain climb at up to a 10% inclination. Which is unbelievable steep. Impressive feat indeed but no so entertaining to play in a video game.

The core of the game very quickly becomes stamina bar manager 2013 and ensuring you spend the first 30 minutes or so tickling your R2 button is the key to success. You should then have the stamina you need to get up that hill, or across that sprint section faster than everyone else. I was gravely disappointed when despite conserving almost all my energy until the last minute, and simultaneously ensuring I was at least in a good place in the pack for my final assault, I still got beat. I was using my stamina up as hard as I could without it running out before the end of the track. I was an uphill rider going uphill. I’d used up my food reserves for what little extra stamina could be squeezes out of my weary cyclist. Consistently I seemed to be doing everything right. I was being conservative and managing the hell out of those stamina bars but it wasn’t enough to guarantee victory.

I can only think that my ignorance of Tour de France and general lack of understanding of the finer points of the game are my ultimate downfall. My final standings where actually quite good and I achieved a fair amount of my team’s goals but I just wish there was some way for me to learn and improve. Because your only real interactions are to manage 2 stamina bars and steer occasionally there seems like very little I can change. You reserve your energy up to the end, give it your all and people overtake you effortlessly leaving you cycling at seemingly sedate speeds as they rush to victory. It’s so frustrating as you jam R2 into the back of your pad and mash X for an extra push only to lose in the final 30 seconds of a 30 or 40 minute race.

TDF2013_02
Honestly, it really doesn’t look this good

One solution to this is the ability to fast forward the race through the uneventful sections and only play the crucial sections. The AI does a great job of not losing any stamina so your rider is fresh for you when you return to the game. Unfortunately this usually means any lead you may have built up is gone and you find yourself back in the main pack struggling to break ahead, having now wasted whatever stamina you previously used. The fact that there is a fast forward option at all is a bit strange as you can actually just leave the AI to finish the entire race for you. If this needs to be here so that I can skip 60 or 70% of a race, which the game actually suggests you do, isn’t that indication that something may be wrong?

Having said that you’re not going to miss much. Visually speaking there isn’t a single element that looks even reasonable. Every single aspect is pixelated and jagged. The crowd are robotic and repeated shamelessly. At one point there where 3 crowd members in a huddled group that where identical. The cyclists are nothing to behold either, especially considering that the 30% of the time you’re not looking at the fast forward screen you are guaranteed to be looking at your cyclist. The first time I watched a podium scene it was just embarrassing.

I did actually enjoy Tour de France briefly but my patience soon ran out. It’s uninspired, frustrating and looks terrible. It seems to me like yet another game that was made quickly and cheaply to cash in on a sports franchise. There’s little to no appeal to be had and I can’t honestly imagine even Tour de France fans would get anything extra out of the game. In fact as a novice to Tour de France it quickly becomes obvious that the names of the members of Team Sky have been altered. Chris Froome becomes Chris Vroome and Bradley Wiggins becomes Braulio Waggons. I don’t think anyone has been fooled by changing the first letter of Chris Froome’s last name but at least Braulio Waggons gave me a damn good laugh when I noticed.

Review of ArcaniA – The Complete Tale From Nordic Games

A western RPG set in an open-world land of turmoil and trouble, a mysterious plot of imminent destruction and more generic quests than you can shake an enchanted stick at, what could possibly go wrong?

650x

As it turns out, rather a lot! Straight from the off you are dumped into the map after a confusing, yet rather pretty cutscene. Due to the lack of a controller map on the in-game settings, I uselessly meandered about before unintentionally bopping a sheep on the head, after which I was presented with the aptly hilarious trophy for ‘emerging victorious from my first battle’. The game pretty much adapts this philosophy of inadvertently anti-dramatic situations throughout.

Without any form of character customisation whatsoever, connections to our unsung hero lack emotion from the offset. Charged with the task of proving your worth to a potential in-law, our epic journey commences with vole clearing in the fields and persuading nuisances to pack it in.

Soon after, the game frees up to it’s misleadingly open map. The first few tender steps out into the world are intimidating due to what appears to be a large scale of land stretched out ahead. Navigating the plains can be arduous in parts as the magnitude of reward, aside from some collectibles, does not relate to the input of effort required. The bewildering omission of a sprint button, and the sarcastic inclusion of teleporters, acting like waystones, but only able to travel between the small section of map you’re in, once more magnifying the tedium of traversal. With the large amount of backtracking present, you’ll soon be hammering the pad pointlessly in the hope of discovering a faster method of travel.

Combat, the backbone of any competent hack and slash mechanic seems simple, a combo system, a block function, an evasive roll and special moves should all be deeply rooted and employed with finesse to help differentiate your title from others. ArcaniA likes to play things differently though. Much akin to wading through a lake, the responsiveness and immediacy of actions relating to inputs is just plain atrocious. God of War this is not. As in any dire situation, a simple roll away from the impending danger is all that needs to happen, yet by the time the game has responded, you’ll find it’s remembered the inane mashing and inevitably queued up three evades with no discernable method to cancel them. Most of the time however, owing to the non-evident feedback, it can be commonplace to not notice the pounding you’re taking. Enemies fare little better on their behalf too, no matter what manner of weapon being wielded and swung, the effect is the same for each hit, (most) attacks are interrupted and that’s about it. No fancy animations here thank you.

Not that changing your weapon happens all too often either way, the loot system is poor at best, in all the hours I’ve sunk into ArcaniA, there has never been any dispute over which weapon is superior, just the base numbers to compare in what can only be described as the most unintuitive menu and inventory imaginable. There is no compare option, no move to junk button, no select multiple function; only around half a dozen items are displayed at any time. With the amount of screen real estate dedicated, comparing quickly becomes a chore. Add to this, the several weapons and miscellaneous items that cannot be sold, realistically lessen the space once more and the mere thought of shopping, a once great pastime in RPG’s, develops into both dread and sighs.

Levelling up offers no relief, with very few options, no skill trees and absolutely zero chance of creating a unique character fit for comparison, ArcaniA seem to have managed the impossible. Uninspired design choices run rampant; just a basic attribute increase with no interaction would have been preferable.

Graphically sub-par, the open world is appreciated as are the lack of loading screens, yet the feeling that they’ve possibly bitten off more than they could chew rings loudly. Enemy design is generic with little variation other than slight cosmetic changes to the more threatening variants. You’ll come across a smorgasbord of mediocrity battling wolves, goblins and every other vaguely mystical, fantasy creature you can imagine. All require the same tactics and all can be hideously exploited for little challenge should you wish.

All in all, there aren’t many noteworthy issues to bring up for ArcaniA, it’s strangely addictive in only the way an RPG can be and it’s long enough should your attention withstand the punishment. Yet still, there are many basic flaws present that are just plain unacceptable in modern titles. There is some inane fun to be had here, but it feels plain unfinished and still in alpha format, a good few months more polish would have benefited ArcaniA to no end. As a final note, to give an example of all the immersive activities possible, there is a trophy for lying in a bed or sitting in a chair for an hour…
