What is Daedalic Entertainment’s upcoming 3D adventure game Journey of a Roach about.

Journey of a Roach screenshot 002

Journey of a Roach, developed by the Swiss team of Koboldgames, in co-operation with Daedalic Entertainment, takes players to a sarcastic, post-apocalyptic world: Roach Jim and his sidekick Bud are out and about to find their way from a deserted vault to the Earth’s surface. Players steer them through classic point & click adventure game puzzles. Certain challenges can be overcome by using the roach’s natural attributes. Being roaches, Jim and Bud have the ability to crawl up walls and on ceilings, as well as on items.

Players use the third-insect-perspective to guide Jim and Bud through the 3D comic world. There will be no written or spoken dialogue in Journey of a Roach as the insect use their very own, easily understandable signal language.

Koboldgames and Daedalic Entertainment have scheduled Journey of a Roach for release in November 2013, for PC and Mac.

simcity_logo

Today EA have released Update 6.0 for SimCity.

New: Granite Lake Region – New 10 city lake region: http://www.simcity.com/en_US/blog/article/building-granite-lake
While creating Granite Lake, we had a few key goals:
– Provide a region with a new visual style that is highlighted by vistas from each city.
– Two clusters of five cities that are connected by boats traveling across the lake.
– Create a scenic central lake around which the city sites will be placed. Includes shipping lanes to keep that gameplay option for cities on the shoreline.
– A region with unique and challenging terrain to provide a different experience than the previously released Edgewater Bay.
New: RCI Tuning – Tuning to make Industrial needed more. Commercial buildings will now lose profit if they don’t receive enough freight from industry. The demand bars will respond more accurately to which zones are needed. This change will impact existing cities: http://www.simcity.com/en_US/blog/article/making-i…dustry-matter-rci-improvements
New: RCI height variations for Density 3 Buildings. This will add more variety to the look of your cities: http://on.fb.me/14fcVSZ
New: Borderless windowed mode setting.
• Fixes for some issues of the “out of money” problem or unexplained abandonment that some players have experienced.
• Clarity around unfilled jobs and workers to make sure players are messaged that there may be an issue where workers cannot get to unfilled jobs.
• Residential and Commercial buildings are now more consistently in the same wealth in an area of a particular land value. Improves visual consistency.
• Help Wanted, no Shoppers, and No Jobs alerts have been added to the Zoning info panel as alerts.
• Data Layer: Greater map accuracy on the land value map. Residential and Commercial wealth colors added. Abandoned buildings show up red.
• Data Layer: Land Value map shows when placing parks.
• Fixed issue where RCI sometimes builds on roads.
• Fix performance slowdown in cities with more than one million tourists.
• UI Clarity: Show which city hall modules are already placed in the region on the palette UI.
• Garbage UI: fixed issue where garbage UI sometimes showed bins that had already been picked up.

Review of QPAD MK-85 Gaming Keyboard

I’ve always been a little dubious of the advantages of a gaming keyboard. I think part of this is that it’s more difficult to see what advantages you could gain from keyboard such as the MK-85 without trying one. With a gaming mouse we expect more accuracy which will obviously help gaming. With a gaming headset we can either hear our in game surroundings better or just enjoy higher quality audio. Surely with a keyboard if I’m pushing W to go forward that’s it isn’t it? How can that possibly be improved?

The MK-85 has 6 key features that, to me, make it a pro-gaming keyboard. Gold plated USB connectors provide low latency, reducing the time from keystroke to computer recognition. Each and every key has its own LED backlight, which is actually quite useful in a dark environment – probably not an entirely unfamiliar setting for someone considering this keyboard. You get programmable macros and 5 profiles to switch between if you really want to go pro, completing complex tasks at the stroke of a single key. The MK-85 also comes with a handy key remover tool and 4 orange keys for WASD.

1024x768-MK85-CloseUp-MXred

Handy though those features are the final two are the important ones. First of all the MK-85 has full N-Key roll over. This means that the MK-85 is designed so that each key is processed completely independently of each other at the hardware level. No matter how many keys you press at once they will each be recognised and processed separately, and correctly. Most keyboards don’t have this functionality to keep costs down, but there are quite a few games where you may need to hold down many keys simultaneously.

Last, but certainly not least, are the Cherry MX mechanical switches. I know, great isn’t it? Well actually it is because it means the MK-85 is a mechanical keyboard. Rather than compressing layers to complete a circuit like most keyboards, each and every key has its own physical switch.

In real world terms this makes several important differences. Mechanical keyboards are loud. Ever missed that lovely clicking sound when you’re typing away? Well that’s what you’re going to get with a mechanical keyboard. In particular the Cherry MX switches used in the MK-85 are actually made to intentionally make noise to provide feedback. Add to that an increased tactile feedback and much more sensitive keys and you can glide around the keyboard effortlessly. This speed and responsiveness combined with the added feedback is a real advantage when gaming.

1024x768-MK85-Lightson-white

Having said that the MK-85 is also good for typing, or anything else you do on your computer for that matter. At first I imagined typing might be a problem because the keyboard was too sensitive. But after about 20 minutes using the MK-85 I started to notice that the increased responsiveness and feedback was actually allowing me to type faster (and no-less accurately) than on my old, non-mechanical, keyboard. One thing that may be an issue to some with a mechanical keyboard is that they are very heavy, the MK-85 weighs 1.27 Kg. It’s not the kind of keyboard you can really move around a lot but at the same time it’s never going to slip on your desk unless you pick it up either.

As soon as you get it out of the box you can see and feel the quality of the MK-85. It’s clearly built to last with an expected lifespan of 50 million keystrokes (and a 2 year warranty) and more than lives up to the expectations of a professional gaming product in both style and substance. The MK-85 makes a great addition to any serious gamer’s kit. And when you’re done gaming its double USB 2.0 ports, headphone and microphone jacks, programmable macros, LED lit keys and responsive keystrokes will continue to impress. Even given its high price the MK-85 is well worth a buy.

Review of Magrunner: Dark Pulse from Focus Home Interactive

The initial comparisons between Magrunner and a certain popular puzzle game involving portals are obvious to see even at a glance. If you’re going to make a first person puzzle game it’s worth looking to the best. That’s not to say Portal’s intellectual property has been blatantly stolen, just that Magrunner appears similar. And that’s not at all a bad thing.

From the word go Magrunner looks pretty. A brief cutscene introduces the concepts of Magrunner and explains why you’re in a sci-fi world using magnetic technology to overcome a series of puzzle-like obstacle courses. The early game see’s you solving puzzles in a clinical ultra sci-fi environment. It’s slick and incredibly shiny surfaces make for a great looking first few levels as the game introduces you to the different ways to accomplish your various tasks.

03

But inevitably things start to go wrong and soon your environments become half destroyed gritty variants of their sterile predecessors. The narrative is delivered through a series of holographic communiqués from the games’ various characters and isn’t really all that inspired. Surprisingly Magrunner takes on a very dark tone and at times could reasonably be described as a horror title. At first the intrigue of what may have gone wrong at the facility is appealing but soon I found myself wondering if the horror inspired environments where necessary to the game. The plot attempts to be clever and keep you hooked but in reality you are still challenged with the same puzzles in a new environment.

It’s rare I ask for less in a game but I can’t help but think Magrunner would have been better off if it had stuck to it’s early game ideas. The plot and sudden, stark alteration in atmosphere just don’t add anything to the game. If Magrunner had stuck with the plot and format of the early game it would have been very different but I believe it would have complemented the game much better. There’s nothing wrong with the clean, shiny environments and there would be no need to explain why a destroyed area has conveniently formed a puzzle very similar to that of the room before it fell apart. It’s a puzzle game with or without a deep twisting narrative and it should be the puzzles that keep me coming back.

16

Fortunately, the puzzles are definitely Magrunner’s strongpoint. The basic premise is that you have a glove that allows you to charge certain objects with either positive or negative magnetic charge. Two positively charged objects will attract one another and visa versa. Objects are then cunningly placed so that they can be used to solve whatever challenge presents itself. Puzzles are clever and well designed with enough features to keep them fresh for a little while. There is a little too much variation in the difficulty with some levels taking quite a long time to solve and others taking almost none. Although likelihood is a decent challenge is never too far away you can’t help but feel as you instantly solve an area when you first see it that some levels didn’t have the same devotion as others.

A good looking and sometimes clever puzzle game that looses focus by trying to be a lengthy, narrative driven horror puzzler. Instead I wish Magrunner had stuck to your character as an underdog completing challenges to achieve greatness in a glossy white, sci-fi world driven by a harsh class system. Although the horror themed environments are well designed and atmospheric they where ultimately out of place and unnecessary.

Supposedly free formed and destroyed areas fall neatly into puzzles removing any sense of realism that may have existed. Before the facility enters turmoil the rooms form puzzles because they where designed to. There isn’t anything fortunate about the way the environments are, they are puzzles to character and gamer alike. Strip off the drama and disengaged narrative elements, along with some of the easier puzzles, and Magrunner would be a much more streamlined experience. As it stands Magrunner is a clever, good looking and at times challenging puzzler in the middle of an identity crisis.

The city of Chicago is now the ultimate weapon. Watch Dogs will be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this year.
