Exclusive Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag interview with Jean-Sebastien Decant and Darby McDevitt

At a recent visit to Abstergo Entertainment to see Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag I had the opportunity to talk all things AC4 on International Talk Like a Pirate Day with Jean-Sebastien Decant and Darby McDevitt from Ubisoft.

ACGA_SP_99_CaribbeanSea_DefendBlackbeard_1080p

The year is 1715. Pirates rule the Caribbean and have established their own lawless Republic where corruption, greediness and cruelty are commonplace.

Among these outlaws is a brash young captain named Edward Kenway. His fight for glory has earned him the respect of legends like Blackbeard, but also drawn him into the ancient war between Assassins and Templars, a war that may destroy everything the pirates have built.

Darby McDevitt (pictured left) is the Lead Writer for AC4 and Jean-Sebastien Decant (pictured right) is the Lead Game Designer .

In the interview we talk about AC4 and it’s inspiration, we reveal a spoiler for AC3 (for those who still haven’t finished it) and we talk about the present day elements, amongst a few other things, and there is a lot of brand new gameplay thrown in too!

Over to Jean-Sebastien and Darby:

Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag will be released November 1st on Xbox 360, PS3 and WiiU. It is also coming on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Exclusive Batman: Arkham Origins interview with Ben Mattes

Warner Bros will be releasing Batman: Arkham Orgins later this month and I recently had the chance to sit down with Ben Mattes from Warner Bros Montréal to talk all things Batman. And there’s some new gameplay footage in their too!

BAO_October_BatcaveShot

Batman: Arkham Origins is the next instalment in the blockbuster Batman: Arkham videogame franchise. Developed by WB Games Montréal, the game features an expanded Gotham City and introduces an original prequel storyline set several years before the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City, the first two critically acclaimed games of the franchise.  Taking place before the rise of Gotham City’s most dangerous criminals, the game showcases a young, unrefined Batman as he faces the defining moment of his early career and sets his path to becoming the Dark Knight.

So over to Ben:

GAME FEATURES:

The Arkham Story Begins:  Batman: Arkham Origins features a pivotal tale set on Christmas Eve where Batman is hunted by eight of the deadliest assassins from the DC Comics Universe.  Players become an early-career Batman as he encounters for the first time many of the characters that shape his future.

Enhanced Detective Mode:  Think like Batman with an all-new Case File system that allows players to analyse seemingly impossible-to-solve crime reconstructions in real time.  Combining Batman’s cowl sensors with the Batcomputer, players can digitally recreate crimes and study detailed simulation of the act as it happened.

Gotham City will learn to fear Batman:  Take back the sprawling streets of Gotham years before its transformation into Arkham City. Glide above or battle your way through new and ever more dangerous districts in the quest for justice. Prevent crimes in progress, take down gangs of violent new criminals and explore deadly new locations, from the impoverished streets to the penthouses of Gotham’s wealthy.

Gotham’s Most Wanted:  The city streets are filled with more than just Black Mask’s assassins.  Locate and take down Gotham’s most violent and dangerous criminals to earn unique upgrades.

Lethal New Enemies:  Fight new foes such as the Armored Enforcer, the Martial Artist and more – each of which challenge players to approach Batman’s FreeFlow Combat scenarios in different ways.  Classic FreeFlow combat is expanded with every new opponent – and with Batman’s abilities to engage them.

New Gadgets:  Utilize Batman’s signature gadgets or take advantage of powerful new additions such as the Remote Claw, the Concussion Detonator and more.  Use the Remote Claw to create new routes by deploying strategic tightropes or directly attack enemies by stringing them up from vantage points.  Ready the Concussion Detonator to stun and disorient groups of opponents in close combat.

New and Familiar Characters:  Experience a fresh take on iconic Batman characters including Black Mask, Penguin, Deathstroke, Bane, Anarky, Captain Gordon, The Joker, Copperhead and others yet to be revealed.

New Online Mode:  Play online with friends and foes in 3v3v2 gameplay that blends traditional Arkham gameplay with third-person shooter mechanics.  Hunt as Batman or Robin against the most challenging opponents yet – friends and other gamers online – or take a walk on the dark side as a Super-Villain Elite and be part of The Joker or Bane’s gang.  Gamers playing as a Super-Villain Elite will also have a chance to seize control of either The Joker or Bane for a limited amount of time.

Batman: Arkham Origins will be available for the PS3, Xbox 360, the Wii U system, and Windows PC.  Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, the handheld version developed by Armature Studio, will be available for PlayStation Vita and the Nintendo 3DS. The game will release on all platforms worldwide on Oct. 25, 2013.

Review of Stealth Inc.: A Clone in the Dark from Curve Studios

0

On first appearance Stealth Inc. looks like a rather cutesy take on a stealth espionage game like Splinter Cell. Your fun little character donning a set of night vision goggles that are now inseparable from Sam Fisher. And then very soon you will find your character minced or carved up or horrifically killed by traps in some way.

Luckily it turns out that your character is a nameless clone that are definitely not in short supply. Your purpose is to test and defeat the traps set out before you using your wits and cunning. Darkness is your friend and lighting plays a large part in the puzzles that Stealth Inc. presents you with. As does learning through mistakes.

Rather than tell or suggest to you what to do when a new type of puzzle shows up, Stealth Inc. will just make you get it wrong until you learn. Usually there’s an incredibly sarcastic comment written in shadow on a wall behind you. I don’t know how it is that when you get cruelly destroyed yet again trying to figure out how to progress that you laugh when the game taunts you. The comments add a much needed sense of comedy to what would otherwise be a potentially frustrating experience.

ss5

The puzzles are very well designed and on more than one occasion have had me stumped for a good while until I finally figured out how to move on. There are enough elements to the puzzles that they stay fresh and creative throughout the game. Although for the most part the controls are fine on occasion failures can occur because you are unable to perform the actions you need to. Usually this is a timing issue as some of the puzzles rely on ludicrously specific timings. It’s unnecessary that clever puzzles also require such accurate platforming when accurate platforming is awkward to achieve. At times this can get a little annoying especially considering Stealth Inc. is perfectly capable of relying on the strength of its puzzles alone.

Everything is styled and themed with a sterile industrial feel that feels right at home for you and your clone. Stealth Inc. certainly looks good, especially the lighting. Despite its 2D platforming style the lighting in Stealth Inc. is surprisingly advanced. To move through your environment and avoid the devious traps laid before you, you will often rely on darkness. In the darkness you are (almost) entirely safe. Moving a block will see it cast an accurate shadow relevant to the source of light.

ss9

Amongst the shadows and light, scuttling robotic turrets and smoothly panning cameras litter the environment. Everything still has a strangely cute and humorous look to it despite the unbelievable violence that inevitably awaits your nameless clone around every corner. It’s a strange contrast but it keeps the feel of Stealth Inc. light hearted.

Music also adds a lot to Stealth Inc’s undoubted style and charm. Pounding baselines accompany you throughout most of your journey and the music is surprisingly memorable for a platformer. The sound effects of the roaming robots and alarms are largely to be expected but they’re good quality and complement the environments nicely.

With challenging and fresh puzzle design and huge amounts of style, Stealth Inc. makes a great puzzler/platformer that’s difficult not to enjoy. Strangely cute clones combined with puzzles that are at times pure evil is apparently a winning combination. Stealth Inc. is a great puzzler that at times forgets how clever it is and asks for overly accurate reactions and timing. Despite this, a vast majority of Stealth Inc. is clever and challenging and is definitely a game well worth your time.

First look at Boo Bunny Plague from On The Level Game Studios

0

Boo Bunny Plague is one of those games that sounds more random the more you describe it. You play as a robotic rabbit, called Bunny, who gets infected with a virus that grants him intelligence. So what would any robot in possession of artificial intelligence do? Grab a guitar and go around beating various enemies with it, in between singing. Simple.

So at this point you are a robot bunny with artificial inelegance wielding a guitar as a weapon which you may say was weird enough. But then he breaks out into song. And I mean in proper musical style. The topic of the song is how much he loves his creator, or “mother”, and how you’ll never hurt him. Shortly after the song our protagonist beats him thoroughly with his guitar.

Screen03

Gameplay takes on a simple, retro, hack ‘n’ slash style the likes of which I have no doubt most of you have seen before. Rather than different weapons there are different flavours for your guitar that, from what I saw, essentially serve as elements. Boo Bunny’s focus definitely seems to be to entertain  through music and comedy rather than gameplay. The gameplay is fun and holds some retro value but without the music and humour wouldn’t be enough to carry the game alone.

From the small amount of gameplay I got my hands on there where certainly enough pop culture references to hold the attention of any Family Guy fan. There’s nothing particularly clever about the humour but it did manage to get a couple of good laughs out of me.

So really Boo Bunny Plague should just be good fun. The few minutes I got to play where certainly entertaining enough and hopefully the full game can keep the music and comedy fresh until the end. It was a very early build I got my hands on so there’s still quite a way to go for Boo Bunny Plague. Hopefully after quite a bit of polish Boo Bunny can be a fun hack ‘n’ slash adventure with humour that rarely gets seen in video games. Boo Bunny Plague is due out Spring 2014 for PC, Mac and Linux and is currently on Steam Greenlight here. The team is also planning on a Wii U version at some point in the future.
