Review: Just Cause 3

0

A game which, if given the chance, would introduce itself by destroying your house and doing a triple backflip while surfing a plane only to fly off into the distance. It’s fair to say Just Cause isn’t high on subtlety and it’s extremely proud of it. Almost unlimited explosions and an expansive free roam map are really all Just Cause 2 needed to make a point so lets see if it’s successor can carry the torch forward. Then burn something down with it. Rico Rodriguez is back!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrLYBpQdbOU

Little time is wasted unleashing you in JC3 because it knows you want to be free to explore and see what the new world has to offer. A couple of main missions are all you need to get hold of your new equipment and each provides a short demonstration on how to use them. Probably even less than an hour in I was off to explore with no limitations. No inexplicably locked vehicles or environmental elements stopping me from reaching somewhere. You can go and do whatever you want right from the start.

There is no other game of this scope that provides you with such freedom, especially so early on. Just Cause is aware that it’s plot isn’t why your here. You’re not looking for a deep and compelling story told by well crafted characters, you want to blow something up. That self awareness and absolute confidence to be true to itself is what sets JC apart from the rest. It’s also how it gets away with being funny and not coming off as totally bombastic and in your face. If it does it does so intentionally, and comically.

The biggest asset to any free roam game has to be the world you have to roam in. JC2 was very aware of this and provided you with a significant area to glide, fly, swim, drive and fall around. Just Cause 3 has pulled absolutely no punches in completely putting its predecessor to shame with a massive increase in map size. It will take you noticeable amounts of time to travel from one side to another and realistically will require you to use a plane or at least a chopper.

The map is possibly not as densely populated with bases and towns as JC2 was but that’s purely because they don’t need to be. Overall there are still far, far more bases and settlements for you to explode/liberate but the map has increased even beyond that to allow some breathing room as well. A really nice feature is a list of things to destroy that pops up on the left of the screen when you’re in a camp letting you know what you’ve missed. This is a real life saver when you’re trying to find that last object!

1

Rico has a few new pieces of equipment to help him destroy the world this time. A wing suit and a retractable grapple. The wing suit is really the coolest thing ever. It was pretty cool using the hook and parachute on JC2 but the wing suit is a whole new level of slick; if you get it right. There’s much more skill involved in flying along only a foot from the ground at much higher speeds than before with the added threat that if you hit the ground you will simply faceplant. You won’t die but you won’t be far off and often a sarcastic and degrading rag dog fall will be your punishment, although more often than not it’s just funny.

When you pull it off though it’s much more satisfying than the parachute ever was and provides a much needed quicker mode of travel to get around the new island. It’s satisfying, cool enough to be worthy of Rico Rodriguez and needs some finesse and practice from the player. I’ve got a save of Just Cause 2 at 99.9% (that damn oil derrick glitch) and another at ~80% so I’m definitely used to the way things work but I didn’t just turn up and use the wing suit like a pro without some work. It’s an entirely new mechanic and learning how to use it is so rewarding.

Rico’s other trick is the ability to not only latch two things together but to then retract the line and pull the objects towards each other. This is a real game changer. Instead of looking for ways to blow stuff up now I often look for structural weaknesses to pull structures down. There’s an extremely well designed damage system to JC3 that is shown off beautifully by this new tool. It seems so simple but attaching lines to knock down the first of four chimneys to create a domino effect is amazing fun. Even knowing that if you twist the line around the struts of a tower will destroy it but pulling them down vertically will not is pleasing and rewards your experience and destructive creativity.

2

Here’s the feature that I imagine will be quite divisive. In keeping with creating a true free roam experience you can no longer level up equipment and guns. If you chose a gun it will be the best it will ever be. You’re new challenge is to take over bases to unlock new weapons and vehicles for use. Personally I think it’s far better. From the start you can find a loadout that suits your play style and confidently play with it. You don’t have to wait or earn money to buy them first, they’re all yours.

The same goes for ability upgrades like NOS for cars or increased grapples, amongst a huge collection that I won’t list here, which are acquired now by completing relevant challenges. For example to unlock explosive upgrades you need to do explosive challenges, for wing suit upgrades do wing suit challenges and so on. Often the important game changers that are almost required are easily attainable with the latter upgrades requiring you to get some high scores. Again there’s no money or grinding, just unlocking and it feels much more free and open than before. It’s a brave choice but it works well and sets apart JC’s ability to provide an open world.

Graphically there are some fairly major issues. Textures, character animations and, of course, explosions all look and sound great, when they work. It won’t be too long before you see some hideous black triangles replacing the skyline or the lighting screwing up creating a strobe effect on a wall. Falling through the map and characters, including yourself, teleporting high into the sky isn’t unheard of either. It’s JC3’s big problem which will no doubt be fixed in time but it does ruin the moment on a regular basis.

3

Just Cause 3 is everything it should have been and much, much, much more. The world is colossal and you are encouraged from as little as an hour in to get stuck in and explore independently. Arbitrary money systems are replaced with unlocks and timed cool downs that further enforce the open world experience. Just Cause is still the only true free roam game out there and everything that has changed in JC3 only bolsters this. It’s confident, funny, good looking and just plain fun. There’s no other way to have this much fun on a video game. Period.

Final Thoughts

The first thing you notice when you open the box is the carry case. It is very solid and will protect the headphones even if you drop it or knock it against something. Including a hard shell case is so much better than putting a carry pouch which seems to be fairly normal with headphones these days, and considering the low price of these headphones I was pleasantly surprised to see one included.

The headset itself is lightweight and folds up to make it easier to carry, and they lock into place when you are ready to use them. It has a battery compartment next to the audio cable port. The battery is used for the active noise cancelling (which I will come onto in a moment) and a pair of AAA batteries will last you around 20 hours, so more than enough for a long flight. If the batteries run out then all you lose is the active noise cancelling.

The headset is comfortable to wear, even for long periods of time with a fair amount of movement of the earpieces, and they look good too!

There is a selector switch that enables you to choose between OFF (which provides a passive mode without any amplification), ANC (which is active noise cancelling, which provides up to 15dB of noise cancelling) and Bass (which delivers increased bass performance). You can tell which setting you are on by the different colours that are displayed (as well as looking at the switch itself).

The active noise cancelling works by utilising four separate microphones which remove up to 95% of external noise, and I have to say they work very well, even in very loud environments.

The bass boost uses an integrated 5 watt amplifier to deliver an additional 10dB of bass if you like your music with that little bit extra bass. Personally I preferred to have ANC mode on all the time, after all, they are noise cancelling headphones, so why not use them for it? If you are in a quiet place then bass boost does work well.

The sound quality on these headphones is very good no matter which of the three modes you select with music and dialogue (if you are watching a movie) coming over very clear and crisp.

If you are looking for some very good active noise cancelling headphones that won’t break the bank you should really take a look, and a listen to these. They also come with a two year guarantee.

The Lindy CROMO NCX-100 headphones retail for £99.98.

Final Thoughts

Turtle Beach has released two Star Wars Battlefront gaming headsets to celebrate the release of the game and the build up to the release of Episode VII: The Force Awakens film. With every fan of Star Wars already hyped up for both, the visual styling of this headset is bound to bring smiles to any gamer who has dreamed of being a Rebel Pilot.

Like its sister , The Sandtrooper headset, it captures the look and feel of Star Wars brilliantly using the bright colours of an X-Wing Pilots uniform of orange and white and the ear cups have the X-Wing Squadron logo on the outside with more markings on the main band adding to the visual impact.

I found the headset to be very comfortable to wear for extended periods of game time with little heat build up, thanks to the lightweight design. The main and keeps a nice firm position of the headset without feeling too tight.

Sound quality is great for what is a mid range gaming headset, with the volume control on the cable allows quick access to lower or raise game volume and with a switch to mute the mic. Wearing it whilst enjoying Battlefront really brought the games audio to life with blaster fire and explosions bursting all around. It was impressive to use with the ‘Fighter Squadron’ game mode to hear the foils raise on my X-Wing to that iconic whine of a Tie Fighters engine. Every game I tested wearing the headset sounded great on both PS4 and Xbox One Consoles.

The mic boom is crisp and clear with friends commentating on that fact during party chat, team talk and even when used during various Twitch streaming sessions. It is flexible enough to be positioned how you like and can be easily removed if to use for just listening to music or other media types with the headset.

The Star Wars Battlefront X-Wing Pilot Gaming Headset is available for £34.99 and is superb value for money as a midrange headset that performs equally well on multiple platforms. Any Star Wars fan will love the visuals and decals but its performance is worthy of the purchase. Trust your feelings, the Force is strong with this one!

Review: Downtime DVD

One of the great aspects to being a Doctor Who fan, is being able to look back through over 50 years of the shows history and discover new experiences. This particular one comes the 1995 straight to video spin-off story ‘Downtime’ which actually serves as a sequel of sorts to earlier episodes ‘ The Abominable Snowmen’ and ‘The Web of Fear’ and features the iconic characters Sarah Jane Smith played by Elisabeth Sladen, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart played by Nicholas Courtney. Directed by veteran Doctor Who director Christopher Barry, what makes this particular story so special is that it is an unofficial Doctor Who tale, which the BBC did not permit to use the character of The Doctor and was not even allowed to mention him during the story!

Downtime at its core is a Brigadier story but bridges other episodes and characters well known to Doctor Who. Former companion Victoria Water field, played by Deborah Wattling, is lured back to the Detsen Monastery in Tibet which was first visited in ‘The Abominable Snowmen’ in the hopes of finding her late father. But instead discovers The Great Intelligence still possessing the mind of Professor Travis last seen in ‘The Web of Fear’, who promises to give ‘The Light of Truth’ if Victoria helps to work with it to release him.

Fifteen years later and the story shows that Victoria has been very busy, setting up the New World Institution, a puniversity with the promise of spiritual guidance to the students. In reality the institution is the means by which The Great Intelligence plans to take over the world by infecting the world’s computer systems like a virus and controlling the minds of mankind. An artifact is needed to unlock its true power and believes it is in the hands of The Brigadier, now retired from U.N.I.T. and the institute hires Sarah Jane Smith to investigate and locate both The Brigadier and the artifact.

Downtime 2

This DVD release really is a great look at what could be considered ‘Classic Who’ even without The Doctor starring in the story. To see such iconic characters all feature in their own story is rather exciting as a long term fan of the show and to see so many episode storylines all tied together so elegantly is a great example of why the show has survived for over 50 years. Taking the Doctor out of the spotlight allows for a different kind of Doctor Who story to be told but it still retains all the attributes of not only what makes a great Doctor Who story but of the very different style of classic and modern Who.

Comparing the current high budget special effects and slick production of Doctor Who to twenty years ago serves to show just how far the show has come. From start to finish of Downtime I had a big smile on my face watching the performances of Elisabeth Sladen and Nicholas Courtney who both sadly passed away in 2011. It is rather charming to see how they both captured the screen when on camera, especially when in scenes with some rather cliché ham acting from the rest of the cast at times.

Of course after twenty years it does all look rather dated and at just over an hour long, manages to fit a staggering amount of storytelling in. The storyline of using the internet to take over the minds of people has been used since as the first adventure together of Matt Smith’s Doctor and Clara Oswald with once again The Great Intelligence in ‘The Bells of St Johns’ in 2013. You may also see the possible inspiration for Captain Jack’s military coat with the styling for the character Harrods. Downtime really is a look back at a very different era of Doctor Who but is a really fun and interesting watch.

Downtime 2

The highlight of this DVD really is the bonus disc with behind the scenes features  ‘Behind the Lens’ and a look at the post-production of Downtime. In what felt like a early precursor to ‘Doctor Who Confidential’, getting to see the actors as they prepared for scenes and to see the Director Christopher Barry at work was a real treat to watch. To see how filming was affected by snow conditions and how location shooting was done was interesting to see from a very different age of TV even though only twenty years ago. I had a real fanboy moment to disvover that a trusty Amiga was used to produce the onscreen computer visuals used in scenes. It would be great to compare it to a recent behind the scenes look at how Doctor Who is filmed today.

The post production feature is short but a great look at how visual effects were created before CGI was a natural part of the show. Despite it being an unofficial story and the restriction imposed by the BBC, was curious to see that it was still the BBC Effects team that worked on production as well as the final cut being made broadcast ready at the BBC.

Overall this is a great watch for any generation of Doctor Who fan. The nostalgia of seeing huge grey PC set ups and everyone using Walkmans was a nice throwback to the 90s and the bonus disc with the making of features rounds it off nicely. Of course as a Doctor Who fan, getting to see both Elisabeth Sladen and Nicholas Courtney in their iconic roles together on screen is a real joy. Seeing how different characters were brought together for this story shows how well Christopher Barry knew the Doctor Who universe. It continues into modern Who as the character of the Brigadier’s daughter Kate has returned to the current run of Doctor Who.

It certainly has a place in any Doctor Who collection and a superb look at a very different era. Downtime is available from Amazon UK for £9.99

Harmonix Music Systems, Inc. has announced tomorrow’s release of Rock Band4’s completely free December Feature Update will include an all new gameplay challenge for Expert players, called Brutal Mode.

Brutal Mode – which will be available to Expert players in its own area off the Main Menu – will put even the most hardcore players’ skills to the test. Available in solo or multiplayer, Brutal Mode modifies the note track to react to how well you are playing. The better you play, the harder it gets. Players who master this mode are rewarded with a new Star threshold beyond Gold: the Crimson Star!

Between the Buried and Me mark their Rock Band return with “The Coma Machine,” the 7+ minute long track from the band’s 2015 chart-topping concept album, Coma Ecliptic. Opeth’s epic “Heir Apparent” comes from the Swedish metal masters’ 2008 album, Watershed, and clocks in at almost 9 minutes long. Rounding out the pack is 2015’s “Nevermore” from the Dante’s Inferno-inspired album, Underworld, by Symphony X.
