Review: Elite Dangerous Xbox One

Elite first began back in 1984, created by Ian Bell and David Braben, and gave players the chance to explore space in an open world game like never before. Now a staggering 30 years later and the latest edition, Elite: Dangerous has launched on Xbox One following a successful PC release promising to deliver the most expansive space open world experience yet seen on console. But can such a complex PC game make the transition to console and controller and still retain what has made it such a success on PC?

Elite Dangerous is a very special and deliberate gaming experience that is as unapologetic as it is daunting. Console players expecting an arcade style space shooter are in for a very harsh surprise. The first thing a player will discover is the complete lack of any real tutorial system to the game, none as the standard hand holding system similar games use for easing players into their mechanics has been removed. Instead the game offers links to YouTube videos to help show rather than lead the player through the first steps.

If you are looking to invest in Elite Dangerous I would strongly advise taking the time to look at YouTube videos to gage the level of complexity of the game, especially for new players. For a game so intricate and deep in the very basics of gameplay mechanics, it is a very brave decision but also a big risk to throw players in at the deep end right from the very start. Trying to navigate menus to do even the simplest of tasks can prove to very frustrating and potentially off putting to players expecting more help.To start the game puts the player in a basic ship and a thousand credits in your account and then it is completely up to the player what they do next. The very foundation of Elite Dangerous is the players freedom of choice and in a universe with 400 Billion systems. That overwhelming figure matched my bewilderment sitting in the cockpit of my ship, looking at the various menus and displays in front of me. After performing all my pre-flight checks and working out how to take off from the docking station I felt a genuine moment of exhilaration once the sequence began

The level of visual detail on take off really elevates the impact of taking off. You get a real sense of the freedom the game world offers once you are in flight. What I was not expecting was the moment I turned my ship around and was lost in the moment of seeing the Space station I had just undocked from come into view, and all those childhood dreams of wanting to fly in space all rushed into my mind at once. To then look to the distance to see stars and systems to visit just put a huge smile on my face.

How you choose to carve your path in the world is completely up to you. Checking space station bulletin boards for jobs to earn money was my first choice. But you can also buy cargo and act as a merchant by taking it to other stations to sell. Earning credits allow you to upgrade your current ship or save up to buy new greater capable ships. If business is not your choice then why not become a bounty hunter and track down wanted fugitives but do make sure your ship is ready for the challenge. If you rather play the villain perhaps the life of a space pirate or smugler is more appealling but do watch out incase a wanted bounty is placed on you! The options are almost as endless as the systems you can visit.

Visually Elite Dangerous for Xbox One is just stunning, losing hardly any quality from the port across from the PC. The lighting effects when in space to the outstanding attention to detail on the ships and space stations never stop being anything but spectacular. Complimented by an equally impressive audio system that enhances every moment as well as a musical score that simply brings everything together majestically. Elite Dangerous really is one of the most impressive looking and sounding games on Xbox One right now.

You can literally lose yourself in this game and the slow pace of it does allow you to take everything in but at the same time it also hinders the game in some respects. It can take a long time to earn credits needed to upgrade or buy new ships. Elite Dangerous both wants and demands players take time to learn how it all works but does little to help the player learn how the game works from within. The lack of guidance can lead to moments of just feeling lost and being out of your depth in the first hours of play. Whilst the community around this game has an abundance of help guides and videos to be found by players outside the game, not having those resources in the game I felt was a hindrance.

Elite Dangerous

Elite Dangerous is tremendous example of how PC games with complicated control systems can be adapted and brought to console exceptionally well. Both the PC and Xbox One versions inhabitants the same game universe. Whilst players from either platform are unable to meet in that universe, if the power in a region of that universe is changed by player action or influence on the Xbox One, that change will be felt in the PC version as well and vice versa.

It is staggering to behold the capabilities of Elite Dangerous but it is not a game for the casual Player. It requires a huge time investment both in playing and researching outside of playing to get the most from it. The level of freedom is astounding but at the same time for those players who like to be given some direction, it can leave you feeling rather isolated in its massive universe.

For those willing to put the required time in, Elite Dangerous offers tremendous rewards and offers an experience unlike any other space open world game. For a game series that begun over three decades ago, this title has shown just why it has survived and thrived throughout its long life. It is going to take something very impressive to challenge what Elite Dangerous can do.

ARK: Survival Evolved out on Xbox One 16th December

0
Get ready for ARK: Survival Evolved when it arrives on Xbox One on 16th December.
The game will be made available on the Xbox Game Preview, priced $35 and while it will have some of the features of the PC version, users shouldn’t expect it to be updated as frequently as the latter. On the bright side, updates will be released no further than two weeks apart, to try and keep parity across all versions.

If you purchase on 16th December then you’ll get the full game for $35 (no UK pricing just yet) upon release, which is good news as the final version will cost a lot more. Game Preview purchases will get a skin pack with an unlockable bionic T-Rex skin, ARK Founder’s Hat skin, and ARK Founder’s Trophy.

The final version of ARK: Survival Evolved launches on PC, PS4 and Xbox One in June 2016.

Are you looking forward to checking out Ark on Xbox One? Let us know in the comments below.

Hands on With XCOM 2

1

Recently I had the privilege of getting to play Xcom 2 with the nice folks from 2K. It’s fair to say I’m a huge Xcom fan so my expectations couldn’t really be higher. I’d be the kind of person who would ask for change only to complain that it isn’t the exact same game when it releases. It’s going to be difficult to get the follow up to Xcom right, especially given the devout community it has. If you haven’t seen it yet check out the teaser bellow. It’s old but still awesome so be sure to give it a watch! Oh yeah, the snake guy is actually a Thin Man not in disguise. Somehow they don’t look as irritating any more, but I’m sure they will be.

Things have changed for Xcom 2 in significant ways. The most striking change being that the Earth is lost. Forget about sending a soldier to sacrifice themselves and save everyone, that didn’t happen. Earth is totally inhabited by the aliens and they’ve settled in nicely. Instead of defending the Earth Xcom is now a collection of rebels fighting a guerrilla war to free the enslaved planet. If you thought you were fighting a losing battle in Enemy Unknown now you’re fighting a battle that is already lost.

A lot of the fundamental gameplay has changed to reflect this new overall objective. It’s going to be difficult to really see how things work until I get knee deep in some extended gameplay but first impressions are very promising. There are, of course, no nations to pull out of the Xcom project and provide your loss condition so instead the Aliens have objectives to complete as they try to achieve their final goal and it’s your job to stop them.

From what I’ve seen it looks like there will be plenty of desperate decisions and loss/loss scenarios, which is very Xcom. The Hologlobe has had significant work done and no longer acts only as a way to simply skip time to the next objective. That’s largely because objectives are more varied and the choices between which to tackle first are much deeper.

For instance you might want to sabotage an alien supply depot and stop them using certain equipment for a time. But in doing this the enemy may move a step closer to their goals even though it might make your battles easier down the line is it worth it now? It really looks like the decisions are going to be much more significant and not just dependant on which reward you want more.

2KGMKT_XCOM2_Screenshot_Ranger-Target-HUD

Moving into combat sees the same balance of alterations that remain true to what we all know and love from Xcom and well designed new features. Those familiar with Enemy Unknown and Enemy Within will feel right at home with the UI. It’s better looking and a few changes have made  it easier to control your squad but thankfully 2K haven’t just completely changed everything unnecessarily. Equipment is different, abilities are different and weapon modifications make a huge difference but I was able to find my way around the HUD with relative ease.

When I say weapon modifications I mean it too, not just adding a scope as an inventory item. For example the ‘Hair Trigger’ upgrade gives you a 5% chance that firing costs no action! Even more amazing it actually triggered as I was playing. There are loads of really cool mods to add to your weapons and the weapons themselves are more satisfying than before. There seems to be a bigger focus away from the almighty Plasma and Alloy weapons but it’s difficult to say until I play the game in full. Abilities have had a major overhaul too and represent something similar to those available in the EW mod ‘The Long War’. Classes are quite different from before and each is now more diverse with more powerful abilities. The sniper’s pistol is now an absolute beast and they get the ability to fire it for free every few turns as well as getting squad sight as their first perk. No more max level before the sniper is worth it!

2KGMKT_XCOM2_Screenshot_ADVENT-Trooper

Another big change is the shift from staff being numbers and stats to being fully designed characters. You always had the option to customize your squad, and crushingly name them after people you love, but engineers and laboratory technicians have always just been numbers. Now if you go to your workshop not only can you see the people with names working away but you assign them manually to their tasks too. There’s a much more personal feel than before which really reflects the new Xcom and its struggles.

To reflect Xcom’s wonderfully punishing difficulty you’re now fighting a lost battle against an even stronger force than ever before. It’s stayed the same in all the right ways and made changes that matter. It’s not ‘just’ more of Enemy Within it’s a whole new game with some literally Earth destroying changes. A lot is different in Xcom 2 and so far it is looking absolutely perfect.

Review: Just Cause 3

0

A game which, if given the chance, would introduce itself by destroying your house and doing a triple backflip while surfing a plane only to fly off into the distance. It’s fair to say Just Cause isn’t high on subtlety and it’s extremely proud of it. Almost unlimited explosions and an expansive free roam map are really all Just Cause 2 needed to make a point so lets see if it’s successor can carry the torch forward. Then burn something down with it. Rico Rodriguez is back!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrLYBpQdbOU

Little time is wasted unleashing you in JC3 because it knows you want to be free to explore and see what the new world has to offer. A couple of main missions are all you need to get hold of your new equipment and each provides a short demonstration on how to use them. Probably even less than an hour in I was off to explore with no limitations. No inexplicably locked vehicles or environmental elements stopping me from reaching somewhere. You can go and do whatever you want right from the start.

There is no other game of this scope that provides you with such freedom, especially so early on. Just Cause is aware that it’s plot isn’t why your here. You’re not looking for a deep and compelling story told by well crafted characters, you want to blow something up. That self awareness and absolute confidence to be true to itself is what sets JC apart from the rest. It’s also how it gets away with being funny and not coming off as totally bombastic and in your face. If it does it does so intentionally, and comically.

The biggest asset to any free roam game has to be the world you have to roam in. JC2 was very aware of this and provided you with a significant area to glide, fly, swim, drive and fall around. Just Cause 3 has pulled absolutely no punches in completely putting its predecessor to shame with a massive increase in map size. It will take you noticeable amounts of time to travel from one side to another and realistically will require you to use a plane or at least a chopper.

The map is possibly not as densely populated with bases and towns as JC2 was but that’s purely because they don’t need to be. Overall there are still far, far more bases and settlements for you to explode/liberate but the map has increased even beyond that to allow some breathing room as well. A really nice feature is a list of things to destroy that pops up on the left of the screen when you’re in a camp letting you know what you’ve missed. This is a real life saver when you’re trying to find that last object!

1

Rico has a few new pieces of equipment to help him destroy the world this time. A wing suit and a retractable grapple. The wing suit is really the coolest thing ever. It was pretty cool using the hook and parachute on JC2 but the wing suit is a whole new level of slick; if you get it right. There’s much more skill involved in flying along only a foot from the ground at much higher speeds than before with the added threat that if you hit the ground you will simply faceplant. You won’t die but you won’t be far off and often a sarcastic and degrading rag dog fall will be your punishment, although more often than not it’s just funny.

When you pull it off though it’s much more satisfying than the parachute ever was and provides a much needed quicker mode of travel to get around the new island. It’s satisfying, cool enough to be worthy of Rico Rodriguez and needs some finesse and practice from the player. I’ve got a save of Just Cause 2 at 99.9% (that damn oil derrick glitch) and another at ~80% so I’m definitely used to the way things work but I didn’t just turn up and use the wing suit like a pro without some work. It’s an entirely new mechanic and learning how to use it is so rewarding.

Rico’s other trick is the ability to not only latch two things together but to then retract the line and pull the objects towards each other. This is a real game changer. Instead of looking for ways to blow stuff up now I often look for structural weaknesses to pull structures down. There’s an extremely well designed damage system to JC3 that is shown off beautifully by this new tool. It seems so simple but attaching lines to knock down the first of four chimneys to create a domino effect is amazing fun. Even knowing that if you twist the line around the struts of a tower will destroy it but pulling them down vertically will not is pleasing and rewards your experience and destructive creativity.

2

Here’s the feature that I imagine will be quite divisive. In keeping with creating a true free roam experience you can no longer level up equipment and guns. If you chose a gun it will be the best it will ever be. You’re new challenge is to take over bases to unlock new weapons and vehicles for use. Personally I think it’s far better. From the start you can find a loadout that suits your play style and confidently play with it. You don’t have to wait or earn money to buy them first, they’re all yours.

The same goes for ability upgrades like NOS for cars or increased grapples, amongst a huge collection that I won’t list here, which are acquired now by completing relevant challenges. For example to unlock explosive upgrades you need to do explosive challenges, for wing suit upgrades do wing suit challenges and so on. Often the important game changers that are almost required are easily attainable with the latter upgrades requiring you to get some high scores. Again there’s no money or grinding, just unlocking and it feels much more free and open than before. It’s a brave choice but it works well and sets apart JC’s ability to provide an open world.

Graphically there are some fairly major issues. Textures, character animations and, of course, explosions all look and sound great, when they work. It won’t be too long before you see some hideous black triangles replacing the skyline or the lighting screwing up creating a strobe effect on a wall. Falling through the map and characters, including yourself, teleporting high into the sky isn’t unheard of either. It’s JC3’s big problem which will no doubt be fixed in time but it does ruin the moment on a regular basis.

Just Cause 3 is everything it should have been and much, much, much more. The world is colossal and you are encouraged from as little as an hour in to get stuck in and explore independently. Arbitrary money systems are replaced with unlocks and timed cool downs that further enforce the open world experience. Just Cause is still the only true free roam game out there and everything that has changed in JC3 only bolsters this. It’s confident, funny, good looking and just plain fun. There’s no other way to have this much fun on a video game. Period.
