Loop8: Summer of Gods is a JRPG that tries to break the mould. This weird combination of déjà vu action, visual novel text, and relationship-building didn’t excite me in the slightest. Sadly, the often confusing gameplay and sluggish dialogue juxtaposed the amazing environment and wonderful soundscape. As such, playing this was a slog and no matter how far I progressed, my feelings rarely changed.
Developed by Marvellous and published by XSEED Games, this is a JRPG adventure. Moreover, it has a plethora of unusual mechanics that muddy the water while making your head spin. However, its interesting concept should be applauded. Yet, its execution leaves much to be desired, as you relive every day repeatedly.
Loop8: Summer of Gods is a tale of doom and gloom.
You play the role of Nini, a young lad who grew up in space. However, he has returned to Ashihara island to live a “normal” life. The Kegai are a cruel and destructive force that hunts humans for fun. Yet, they avoid Ashihara for reasons I’m unwilling to explain. Unfortunately, though, this peaceful island becomes tainted as the Kegai finds a way past the barrier! Therefore, a hero is required to find the possessed individual, gather some friends, and save the world before it is too late.
The plot gives a brief indication of the confusing nature of this title. Once the foundations are set, you spend much of your time scratching your head. Accordingly, you’ll aimlessly read the never-ending text and wonder what the hell is going on. Matters are made worse when the key mechanics are explained to you. As such, it took me an awfully long time to get to grips with every element on offer.
What option will you go for?
Relationships and stats.
Loop8: Summer of Gods focuses on some basic mechanics. Effectively, you must improve your stats by completing tasks and finding blessings. Alongside this, you’ll explore the market to find food to increase your stamina and action points. By doing this, you can increase the number of jobs you can undertake and improve your attributes further still. The tasks are remarkably simple and inane. You can work out on the iron bars for strength or use the arcade to improve your skill. Alternatively, you can search your surroundings to find blessings from a flying squirrel called Musasa. These are essential if you wish to get buffs and progress later in the game.
Relationships are another major part of the game. Every interaction alters the mood between characters. Additionally, your relationship with one person can have a positive or negative impact on another. Therefore, you must balance your time and tasks wisely. As you explore the stunning island, you’ll need to discover who has been possessed by the Kegai. Furthermore, you’ll need a band of 3 friends that have a positive relationship with the possessed individual. Subsequently, there are plenty of plates to spin in this absurdly elaborate JRPG.
So much dialogue.
I’m a fan of visual novel titles. But Loop8: Summer of Gods took it too far. Whenever you die, or the timer runs out, a new loop begins. From here, you must repeat the actions you’ve taken and endure the same conversations. To make things worse, each conversation rarely links to another. As such, every interaction feels isolated, even though they are connected by the relationship system. This lack of continuity was frustrating as the plot fails to flow as well as it should. Moreover, it enhances the layers of confusion and made my interest wane a bit more.
The timer and death ideas should have been interesting. Yet, in reality, they were tiresome. The seamlessly never-ending tirade of rehashed dialogue will drive you nuts. Thankfully, though, there is a helpful skip system. However, this only embellishes the random nature of the game and leads to unwanted mistakes. As with any visual novel, your choices matter. Therefore, if you make an error, and you will, you will damage your relationships and this can have dire consequences.

Is it a dungeon?
The constant ticking of the clock is a daunting prospect. But if you somehow work out who is possessed, you’ll unlock the door to the dungeon. Sounds exciting, right? Well, it isn’t, sadly. The dungeon is a mirror image of the town but delivered in a muted fashion. Moreover, the ghostly figures become your foes and they trigger a bizarre fight.
The simple battle system is tedious and filled with problems. Teamwork goes out of the window as your options are limited and healing your party is more luck than judgement. As such, trying to work your way through the “dungeon” is dependent on the relationships you have formed and the mood of the surrounding group.
Loop8: Summer of Gods looks amazing.
If Loop8: Summer of Gods wasn’t so pleasant to look at, I’d have switched off long before I did. If you love Anime or Manga, you’ll adore the stunning finish and the exceptional character models. What’s more, the settings are fantastic and even the muted dungeon was unusual and interesting. Alongside this, the UI was suitable, and the cutscenes were great. However, the loading times were appalling, and the action was interrupted repeatedly by lengthy pauses. Consequently, this was unacceptable for a modern title.
The audio epitomises the JRPG genre. The airy tracks, exceptional acting, and amazing sound effects add magic and wonderment to every moment. Furthermore, the blend of spoken and written dialogue was nicely balanced. Accordingly, the acting never got old and the poignant elements were well delivered.
It is fighting time.
Why is the hero so slow?
Oodles of written dialogue can be justified, but a hero that is stupidly slow is unacceptable. Subsequently, this meandering protagonist will piss you off! It’s bad enough that you have to sit through hours of loading screens and masses of dialogue, but to have to walk as fast as a snail as well, that’s just torturous. Other than this, the control system was suitable, and each command was thoroughly explained.
If I wasn’t reviewing this game, I would have binned it off hours before I did. The tedious nature of every element will turn you off immediately. Moreover, the slow pace and mountains of text create an undesirable atmosphere that instantly puts your back up. Subsequently, if you can power through this, I applaud your resolve.
Loop8: Summer of Gods was a big disappointment.
I love JRPGs and I couldn’t wait to explore Loop8: Summer of Gods. However, its interesting ideas are so poorly executed that I was horribly disappointed. Furthermore, it is so confusing that it is tough to comprehend every element. Accordingly, I didn’t like it and I won’t be recommending it. Yet, more information can be found here! The barrier has been passed, and a hero is needed. Can you step up to the mark and save everyone before time runs out?
Flat Kingdom Paper’s Cut Edition is a title that follows in the footsteps of Paper Mario. However, this indie title doesn’t have the same panache as its mainstream rival. Yet, the undeniably cute gameplay and cruel antagonist keep you hooked throughout.
Developed by Games Starter and published by Ratalaika Games, this is a platform title. Moreover, it blends the world of 2D and 3D action as you explore a colourful world. Additionally, you’ll search for coins and improve the protagonist with drip-fed mechanics. Accordingly, this has a gentle learning curve that can be enjoyed casually.
The world map is large and varied.
Flat Kingdom tells a familiar tale.
The hero of this familiar tale is Flat. This brave individual has the power to transform their shape to overcome various obstacles. It can transform from a circle to a square, and finally a triangle. Each shape has a specific use, and as your skills are improved, you can explore new locations and overcome greater obstacles.
A wise sorcerer created 6 magical jewels. Each of these precious stones was hidden around the kingdom. They were created to keep the malice and chaos of the third dimension at bay. However, an evil thief has other plans. By stealing the jewels, the malevolent creature has created an unruly mess. As such, Flat is called upon to stop the villain and save the day.
Interesting mechanics.
Flat Kingdom kept me hooked thanks to its rudimentary approach and interesting mechanics. Moreover, the excellent puzzles and boss battles kept the action ticking over. Thankfully, the straightforward gameplay ensures that though there are some tricky moments, it is simple to play and easy to pick up.
Flat’s special powers have multiple uses. Not only are they key to overcoming each puzzle and obstacle, but they are essential when tackling each monster. Accordingly, you must remember which element impacts another. For example; when Flat is square, he can kill a triangular creature. Furthermore, if he is a triangle, he can hurt a circle. Finally, if he is a circle, he can annihilate a square. So far, so good. However, this goes one step further!
You must use this knowledge to solve each problem you face. Additionally, you’ll use the strengths of each shape to traverse each level. As a circle, you can double jump and reach platforms. However, if you are square, you are slow and cumbersome, but you can move heavy objects and knock down walls. The triangle, on the other hand, can pop balloons, wall jump, and cut ropes. Understanding each pro and con is essential if you wish to leap gaps, smash floors, or swim great distances.
Use the worm to leap the chasm.
Boss battles.
Unlike its peers, Flat Kingdom doesn’t have challenging boss encounters. Instead, once you understand the key elements of each battle, you’ll defeat them in no time at all. Disappointingly, this was frustrating. Unlike the exploration elements, the boss fights were too simple. Consequently, this will annoy hardcore gamers who desire a tough end-game experience.
Luckily, though, the excellent exploration elements mitigate against this shortcoming. I loved how the action expands once new elements were introduced. Furthermore, tracking each coin on every level required no effort. Instead, a basic ghost system was introduced. As such, if you have collected anything on a previous run-through, the item would appear faded and ghostly. Accordingly, you always knew what collectables were outstanding.
Flat Kingdom looks wonderful.
Flat Kingdom perfectly blends a 2D background with 3D platforms. Therefore, it was easy to understand where to go and what to do. However, the level design was fantastic, as the action doesn’t follow a linear approach. Instead, you are free to explore multiple routes that comprise many secrets and plenty of collectables.
On top of the fantastic level design, you’ll enjoy striking character models, vivid colours, and interesting and varied worlds to explore. Each location has an array of different creatures, and there are plenty of traps and obstacles to overcome. This was great, as it kept the action fresh and made you want to keep playing.
The audio was equally impressive. The varied soundtrack enhanced each arena. As such, there were upbeat and aggressive songs for the boss encounters and calmer and serene tunes for the exploration elements. Alongside this, you’ll enjoy some bizarre sound effects.
Try and avoid those bats.
Clearer controls would have been better.
The developers attempted to keep instructions to a minimum. Consequently, the tutorial is stripped-back and guidance comes in the form of small billboards. Disappointingly, this led to some confusion and understandable frustrations. Moreover, executing each new skill could be problematic. The wall climbing ability is tricky to perform, and this led me to swear more than I’d like. Other than this, the control setup is well-considered and the inputs are responsive.
Replay value and longevity are limited to the coin collection element. As such, once you revisit each stage and find the collectables, there is little else to do. Had the boss battles been tougher, then this issue would have been removed.
Flat Kingdom is an excellent indie title.
Despite my minor issues with the gameplay and controls, I loved Flat Kingdom. Its zany concept and interesting mechanics make it a fun, albeit simple title. Had the developers increased the difficulty while incorporating a Metroidvania-lite approach, then it would have been vastly improved. However, I still enjoyed it and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you reclaim the jewels and save the kingdom? Morph into different shapes, overcome obstacles, and kill every boss you encounter.

We are big fans of the Tonies story box – my trusty 6 year old assistant has been listening to Tonies for a number of years now and he eagerly awaits new ones!

Just plug it into a USB-C port on your computer and then you have a number of additional ports available to you, including Gigabit Ethernet.
I used the adaptor on my MacBook Pro and it worked great! My particular model of MacBook Pro only has 4 USB-C ports, so if I wanted USB-A, Ethernet connectivity or SD or MicroSD connections I would need additional kit, each one normally taking up a free port. But not with this device – one port is all you need, and don’t worry if your computer only has one USB-C port, because this adaptor can also power your computer if its powered by USB-C.

Christmas is, of course, a useful thematic tool for movie producers. It can provide a backdrop for the main plot, an architecture for the characters to move around without necessarily being the main aspect of the story. On the other hand, putting Christmas central to the theme is a money-spinner; otherwise, studios wouldn’t do it.
We can point to so many films that are directly about Christmas, like Elf and the Miracle on 34th Street, and even titles like Let it Spin attract players because Christmas is the central theme. Yet, we wanted to pick out five Christmas-themed movies that you could easily enjoy all year round. The point of these movies is that you could remove the Christmas elements, and they would still be great. These five can be enjoyed any time of the year:
Die Hard
Yes, yes, we are starting with the “Christmas” movie that has become an internet joke. But that’s the point of this list. It’s a moot point as to whether or not Die Hard is a Christmas movie. Had it been set in the heart of summer, it would still be one of the best action movies ever made. The John McClane movies spawned several sequels; some good, some awful, but the original remains far superior to the rest. You know the plot, and you’ve likely seen it before, but there is always a good time to rewatch Die Hard.
It’s a Wonderful Life
For many, watching It’s a Wonderful Life is a tradition every Christmas. Indeed, many television broadcasters schedule it on Christmas Eve. But like Die Hard, It’s a Wonderful Life would work just fine if there were no mentions of the C-word in the film. However, few believe it to be true, until Tai arrives. Inspired by the legend of Maui and the Giant Fish, this surreal plot explores some wonderfully unusual topics. Additionally, the developers have enjoyed their creative licence.
The action focuses on a semi-linear approach. As such, you’ll enjoy drip-fed elements and classic blocking mechanics. Accordingly, you’ll be prevented from exploring the whole map until you have the relevant tools. These items can only be obtained once you complete each dungeon. On completion, you’ll be able to explore otherwise unreachable areas.
This gentle learning curve was great as you became accustomed to each new tool. Sadly, though, the game offers little guidance on how each item works. As such, you may become stuck on a puzzle until you work out the finer points. This was disappointing, as the rest of the action is well explained and easy to understand.

Moreover, you got to see areas that you’d have otherwise missed.
The core aspect of the gameplay has to be the fighting and the puzzles. There are 4 dungeons to explore and plenty of monsters to slay on the way. The opening dungeon is simple to navigate and the problems you encounter are easy to overcome. Yet, the second and third dungeons will test your logical mindset and your memory recall. On top of this, the bosses will give you a hard time until you highlight their weaknesses.
Though Reverie: Sweet As Edition won’t test veteran gamers, I enjoyed the causal gameplay and the progressively tougher ideas. As the plot reaches its finale, there is a distinct difference between the opening chapter and the final moments. Moreover, it doesn’t stray from its nostalgic roots, and this was fantastic.

I adore a pixelated experience. Subsequently, Reverie: Sweet as Edition was right up my street. The stunning colour palette was bold and flashy. As such, it was beautifully retro without being OTT. Furthermore, the finish was modern and the clean lines and interesting sprites were great. On top of this, the stage design was impressive, and each dungeon had a varied approach.
Alongside this, I loved the quaint audio. The mixture of dramatic songs and softer tunes enhanced the drama and the family moments. Additionally, the shrill sound effects retained a dated edge, which worked perfectly with the retro style.
