Review: Sludge Life 2

Corruption of power is a common theme in many games, whether it’s killing egotistical gods, fighting against corruption in the justice system, or even sometimes the power of the player controlling the game. However, unlike most games, Sludge Life 2 is about living in a corrupt society rather than fighting it. Sludge Life 2, developed by Terri Vellmann, Doseone, and published by Devolver Digital, is a disgusting game, featuring crude visual gags, irritating songs, and a directionless world. While Sludge Life 2 has redeeming qualities, such as its sandbox open zone, distinct visual themes, and multiple endings, the game has too many annoyances to fully enjoy this experience.

The Next Day

Sludge Life 2 has little in the way of the story which makes it quite unremarkable. After a huge party, you wake up in a bathtub. You and your friend discuss how another friend, a rapper, has gone missing and you must find him to make a new rap video. Despite the simple premise, the story adds some depth with multiple endings based on your actions. However, the clues to get each ending are so vague you will most likely need a walkthrough just to finish the game. Furthermore, the game is more focused on building its world rather than helping the player.

Thankfully, the world is built to be very believable. this world is grotesque in design featuring acts such as; giving cigarettes to children, taking drugs, and police brutality. I can appreciate how well the world is built, regardless of my dislike towards its themes. Although I strongly dislike it’s crude humor and graphic scenes.

Sludging through a Sludge Life

Sludge Life 2 is a first-person 3D Action-Adventure game featuring an open zone world. The world has a lot of NPCs to talk to, secrets to find, and some platforming challenges. Unfortunately, the camera hinders the platforming experience. This is due to two things: The first-person nature of the camera and the warping on the camera. Both of the aforementioned issues make platforming extremely inconsistent. While it is an issue, thankfully you can find a double jump upgrade which slightly helps the issues presented.

Like the double jump, you can find many more secrets and upgrades as you progress through the world. There are many secrets to be found, however, none of them are necessary to beat the game, which gives the player a sense of freedom in the game. Unfortunately, just like with the main story, the lack of direction makes these secrets hard to find. Overall, while the gameplay can be fun, the issues with the camera and lack of direction within the game make it hard to fully enjoy the gameplay.

The presentation of Sludge Life 2 is a mixed bag, much like the rest of the game. While I like its distinct retro look, I found the music to be irritating. Firstly, the game looks great, while it’s not graphically impressive, the color schemes and choices make every pop. I also found the character models to be well done, everything was clear and distinct. Unfortunately, as mentioned before I did not like the music. I found the music was way too loud and obnoxious. Also, the lyrical tracks that were played could have been easier to understand. Furthermore, the disgusting themes of the story found their way into the sound effects. The presentation, unfortunately, suffers a lot thanks to its headache-inducing soundtrack.

Sludge Life 2, Painfully Mediocre

Sludge Life 2 is painfully mediocre. While it has some good concepts, like its themes, its many secrets, and its branching story paths, that isn’t enough to outweigh its large list of negatives. While I did find some fun with this game, overall the head-ache-inducing music, the camera issues, and the lack of direction, really hurt my enjoyment of this title. Furthermore, the crude themes of the game further reduced my enjoyment of this title. Overall, while there is fun to be had in this game, you might be better off looking for something else.

Let’s Revolution! is an interesting concept. This unusual game tests your grey matter as well as your logical thinking. However, it is deceptively straightforward, despite its many tactical elements. On top of this, it borrows heavily from Minesweeper and this was a phenomenal choice.

Developed by BUCK and Antfood and published by BUCK and Hawthorn Games, this is a rogue-lite adventure title. Moreover, you must think logically as you explore a grid-based landscape filled with enemies and treasures. Consequently, this edgy game will test your skills and your patience.

Let’s Revolution! is a unique experience.

I’ve never played anything like Let’s Revolution! This strange blend of genres works exceptionally well. What’s more, the bite-sized playthroughs and varied characters ensure that you never get bored. Additionally, there is an array of skills to unlock, new weapons to buy, and plenty of heroes to command. Accordingly, there is a mind-boggling amount of depth in what is an essentially straightforward affair.

The narcissistic King has gone crazy! This brutal overlord tries to rule with an iron fist. However, you will not stand by whilst he ruins the Kingdom for his own pleasure. Instead, you will hunt him down, no matter the dangers you face. With an array of armies at his mercy, you must avoid their attention and stay alive. Moreover, if you can locate the King on each stage, you’ll get one step closer to freeing the Kingdom of this demented beast.

A rudimentary concept.

Minesweeper is as old as the hills. As such, everyone has wasted time playing it. Yet, Let’s Revolution! evolves this concept to give you a tactical insight into the dangers you face. Unlike Minesweeper, however, discovering an enemy behind a hidden square isn’t instant doom. No, instead, it’ll damage your health while giving you the opportunity to resolve the situation.

Each stage starts under a fog of war. Yet, some spaces are revealed to give you a fair head start. In the corner of each space is a number. This number represents the amount of roads adjoining it. If the square is adorned with a 0, you know you are free to move without danger. But if there is a number in view, you risk landing on a road.

I know what you are thinking. “A road…ohhhh so dangerous!” Well, normally a road isn’t that bad. Yet, in this case, it is where your enemies can be located. As such, if you wish to survive, you must be aware of every road on every map. Once you understand this idea, you can create plans and adjust your approach accordingly. Furthermore, depending on which hero you have selected, you will need to alter your plan to make the most out of any situation.

Fight or flight?

Let’s Revolution! isn’t a game that focuses purely on combat. No, there are plenty of styles that allow you to get to the end goal. Occasionally you are better to minimise your fighting and hunt only for the King. Alternatively, you may wish to wipe out every foe and search every shady square. Whichever option you select, there are strengths and weaknesses depending on the hero you choose.

On top of this, there are different abilities that enable you to change your approach altogether. You may unlock stealthy elements that enable you to be more defensive. However, you may thrive by upgrading your bow and slaying everything in your path. Whatever you decide, you must focus on your stats if you wish to succeed.

Each hero has health and stamina statistics to focus on. What’s more, you have an arsenal of weapons and abilities at your disposal. Yet, each of these uses up your stamina and is locked behind a time constraint. Subsequently, you must use the right attack in any given situation.

Let’s Revolution! is pleasant to the eye.

I liked the striking colour palette and clean lines of Let’s Revolution! Additionally, the varied landscapes and interesting character models were pleasant to the eye. The tabletop perspective worked well with the turn-based style and the grid-based maps. What’s more, the simple UI and rudimentary animation were understated but perfectly serviceable.

The audio was fun, folksy, and enjoyable to listen to. Sadly, though, it didn’t break the mould, but this mattered not. The peaceful nature of the tunes and the familiar sound effects won’t wow you, but they were good nonetheless.

Brilliant tutorials.

This could have been a horrific game to play. In theory, there is a lot to learn. However, thanks to the brilliant tutorials and the exceptional Minesweeper mechanics, you’ll be up and running in no time. Yet, this has the potential to be confusing whenever you swap heroes or you learn new skills. As such, you must expect some elements of trial and error if you wish to succeed.

I didn’t expect this to be so darn addictive, but I was wrong. There are a handful of heroes that must be mastered, as well as plenty of skills and abilities that must be unlocked. On top of this, the rogue-lite mechanics and the upgrade stores ensure that no playthrough is ever the same. Consequently, this has plenty of replay value and longevity.

Let’s Revolution! allows you to take down that dastardly monarch.

Overthrowing a dastardly monarch is no easy feat. Yet, Let’s Revolution! allows you to try your best. With an array of heroes at your disposal and plenty of unique levels to tackle, this rarely becomes tiresome. Moreover, the simple-to-understand yet challenging core mechanics will test your skill and your patience. Accordingly, I loved it and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you overthrow the King and save the day? Select your hero, choose your approach, and hunt down that King.

The Tranya T6 earbuds prove that quality doesn’t have to break the bank. These stylish earbuds are comfortable, well-built, and packed with top-end features. Moreover, they have a pleasant range of tones and are excellent for gaming and watching films.

Alongside this, the in-built microphone delivers crisp and accurate voice pickup. Consequently, every hands-free conversation is pleasant and echo-free. Additionally, thanks to the excellent Tranya app, you can adjust the sound quality at the touch of a button. Therefore, not only do these sound great, but they are extremely user-friendly as well.

Technical aspects. 

The Tranya T6 earbuds are the perfect choice for walkers or commuters. Though they can be used for other sports, I would say there are better alternatives on the market. Furthermore, they are a great option if you need to connect to 2 devices at once. Thanks to the multi-device connectivity, you can stay on top of business calls while enjoying Netflix, Deezer, or Cloud gaming on another device.

Alongside this, unpleasant outside noises during phone calls are a thing of the past. The CVC 8.0 noise cancellation blocks out unwanted ambient sounds. Accordingly, no longer will other people hear that screaming baby or the person listening to obnoxious music.

This technology ensures that every phone call is crystal clear. I’ve endured some horrendous hands-free experiences in the past. Fortunately, though, the Tranya T6 earbuds are amazing to use. During testing, I had no issues with unwanted sounds, echoing, or quiet microphone pickup. Instead, each call was clear and problem free.

Powerful music delivery. 

I was surprised by the powerful audio and pleasant range of tones. Additionally, the bass was well-balanced, and there were no obvious weaknesses. These earbuds use Qualcomm QC3040 AC to reproduce the original sound. Though this won’t wow users of more expensive tech, at this price point, it was pretty impressive. Consequently, you don’t endure tinny high points or unbalanced bass lines. Instead, each song sounds like a studio track and that was phenomenal.

Alongside the excellent music delivery was a low latency experience. The 40 ms low latency mode is the perfect option for those looking to enjoy razor-sharp gaming or films. Subsequently, whenever I used these with my Steam Deck or mobile phone, I enjoyed lag-free audio that kept pace with each cinematic.

Build quality. 

Whenever you use a device for extended periods, it must be comfortable to use and built to last. Thankfully, the Tranya T6 earbuds tick both of these boxes. Their lightweight design and selection of spare ear tips ensure that they are snug and comfortable.

Alongside this, the excellent charging case is rugged and pleasant to the eye. The matching colour scheme was a great design choice. Moreover, the internal LED lights reinforce the simple but professional finish. 

Are the Tranya T6 earbuds worth it? 

The Tranya T6 earbuds retail for under £100. Now, this may seem like a steep asking price. However, it offers a lot of bang for your buck. Review: Enclave – HD

Enclave – HD is the remake of the well-received 2002 title. This polished version retains much of the original charm. Consequently, it’ll divide modern audiences. If you love a janky retro experience, then this will float your boat. Alternatively, if you desire a deep and rich title with all the bells and whistles, then you’ll want to give this a miss.

Developed by Sickhead Games and Starbreeze Studios AB and published by TopWare Interactive, this is an action-adventure title. Moreover, there are some minor exploration elements and lashings of fighting and fantasy creatures. Accordingly, it takes a stab at creating a mystical world that doesn’t work by modern standards.

Who is hiding in the shadows?

Enclave – HD: a tale of dark and light. 

The Dreg’Atar armies laid siege to the kingdom of Celenheim. As the war looked lost, a mighty wizard split the earth with a powerful spell. This act of defiance paused the war, but both sides’ fates had not been sealed. Instead, as time passed, the Dreg’Atar became increasingly angry. As such, they raised a monstrous army, crossed the rift, and set out to finish the job. However, one man can make a difference for either side. This person is the protagonist, and this is the role you undertake.

As the hero, you may choose to be a warrior of the light or a minion of the darkness. Both roles sound grandiose, however, in reality, there is little difference! Yes, there are obvious aesthetical differences. Yet, the gameplay is almost identical, and this was unfortunate. As a consequence, the action is repetitive and it would take a hardcore fan to enjoy both campaigns.

Rudimentary mechanics.

Enclave – HD utilises well-trodden and dated mechanics. In 2003, this wasn’t deemed a groundbreaking experience. Therefore, roll on 20 years, and the game somewhat lacks finesse. This isn’t an issue if you love a sense of nostalgia. However, younger gamers will find the core concept to be tiresome and dull.

Each campaign focuses on a set goal. You must traverse lifeless environments and battle small waves of creatures or humans. Furthermore, you must complete some basic puzzles and search for pots of gold. Once you reach the goal, the mission ends, a cutscene kicks in, and you move on. This rinse-and-repeat approach continues until the game’s finale. Accordingly, the first mission through to the last offered little originality, which was frustrating.

Forget your sword and use some magic.
It is time to use some magic.

New characters and weapons. 

In typical fantasy adventure fashion, the developers have attempted to mix things up. By introducing new characters, there is a break from the tedium. Yet, the central concept never changes and the strengths and weaknesses of each hero don’t add enough to the gameplay. 

Luckily, though, a small arsenal of weapons, shields, and magic items creates a sense of excitement. Yet, these items are locked until you find the gold on each level. Therefore, you must explore your surroundings if you wish to improve your gear. 

Enclave – HD has aged badly. 

Like a middle-aged person using Botex, Enclave – HD is mutton dressed as lamb. No matter how much HD polish they use, this still looks utterly shite. The awful textures, poor stage design, and woeful animation are laughable. This is before I discuss the character models! For reasons unknown, every character looks like a partially melted waxwork model. Now, I know this game is 20 years old, but this has aged appallingly.

Unfortunately, the same can be said about the audio. The wooden acting, poor soundtrack, and lame sound effects are atrocious. Thankfully, I spent most of my time chuckling as this proves how far gaming has evolved.

Slash, slash, slash. 

I don’t mind the occasional hack ‘n slash game. But Enclave – HD is an action-adventure title. As such, when every combat experience is mindless button-bashing, I became frustrated. Disappointingly, there is no tactical nuance and some minor “kiting” is all you need. Alongside this, the hitboxes are awful. Subsequently, this forces you to spam the action button more than you’d like. Additionally, the controls are not responsive and the action feels clumsy. 

This has plenty of longevity, thanks to the 2 campaigns and the never-ending missions. Furthermore, there is plenty of gold to find if you want the best weapons. However, a lack of complexity and repetitive gameplay will put you off.

Enclave – HD misses the mark. 

I’m normally a lover of retro experiences. Yet, Enclave – HD misses the mark. Every layer of this game is dated and clumsy, and that was disappointing. Yes, I laughed much more than I expected, but I don’t think that was the desired result. Unfortunately, I can’t think of many positives and I can’t recommend that you buy it. However, more information can be found here! Will you bow to the darkness, or will you stand up for what’s right? Choose your side, find the gold, and complete every mission.

Arcades and therefore arcade games are making something of a comeback, as does anything when given enough breathing space to forget the things that we hated about them in the first place. Nostalgia is a rose-tinted lens, my friends.

For every Pac-Man or Space Invaders, there are hundreds of titles that have faded into obscurity or ascended into ignominy, never forget.

You yearn for the days of your youth, sinking endless money into Galaga whilst surrounded by friends, and drinking various sugar-filled beverages. That seems like a thing, I’m not sure, I’m just a 90s kid who has seen the movie TRON.

In the cold light of day (today specifically) do arcade-style games hold up? That’s a big question that I can’t answer but I can review this game: Deathwish Enforcers.

Deathwish hits the arcade aesthetic perfectly

Deathwish is a classic side-scrolling action/platformer. Proceed from left to right while doing your best to avoid a hail of bullets from various enemies. Master the controls and you’ll be fine, blink for a second too long and you’re done. It’s the standard punishing gameplay combined with some modern quality-of-life upgrades.

Set in what seems to be a Miami Vice sort of 60s/70s American aesthetic you can choose between four characters, each wielding a different weapon and each fulfilling a different “Dirty Harry”-style archetype. It doesn’t matter which you choose outside of personal preference as each character handles identically, so there is no fighting amongst you and your aforementioned friends.

The game is relatively short, providing only 7 levels for you to shoot through, although if you remember anything of older games, this is an illusion. Games of this ilk will trade content for difficulty, the time you spend in the game being mostly retreading your steps should things go wrong.

Whilst this is a fine game model, and makes a ton of fiscal sense if this were in a dingy arcade somewhere, I can’t help but feel we’ve moved on as an industry.

The bosses are interesting to say the least

Looking through the lens of positivity, there is a lot to like here. The aesthetic/vibe is excellent, the game does a fantastic job of capturing that seedy underground criminal world that has been made famous through several different mediums. The sound design and music are top notch and playing the game is an intense experience with all these factors contributing to how you feel in the moment.

I found myself swearing colourfully at several enemies that chose to break the rules of engagement by throwing dynamite or trying to hit me with a car, but the frustration never felt unfair, rather my own skill was in question.

When you die as one character you can cycle through the options and come back as another, within the scope of the lives you start the level with. This trope isn’t unique amongst this style of game, but it does give the player a wide range of experiences within each level unless you’re some sort of speed-running freak who doesn’t die once of course.

I do miss a good Game Over screen

I think my main takeaway from Deathwish Enforcers is that arcade games are not meant for me, it is a rare beast that comes along that tags my interest as I just don’t have the nostalgia to help me look beyond what I see as glaring design issues but are rather just features of games of that era. So it’s hard to criticise Deathwish for these design choices when that’s exactly the point they were going for. However, I can’t say I enjoyed my time with the game much but if you’re a fan of games in the style of Metal Slug then this is 100% for you.

I’m going to give the game a 6 but I can absolutely see a more suited reviewer handing out a 7 or 8 as the game is a quality product, just not one built for me.

The Bookwalker: Thief of Tales is a game that took me by surprise. Its original concept, unusual art style, and witty dialogue impressed me throughout. Furthermore, if you subscribe to Xbox Game Pass, you can try it for free. As such, you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain.

Developed by DO MY BEST and published by tinyBuild, this is a surreal adventure title. Moreover, it has some unusual puzzles and minor branching storylines. Accordingly, it’ll test your mind while offering plenty of replay value. On top of this, the bizarre plot has plenty of twists and turns and many unusual characters.

The Bookwalker: Thief of Tales is a collaboration of strange stories.

I’m a fool for unique concepts. As such, The Bookwalker: Thief of Tales thoroughly impressed me. Its use of different perspectives to highlight the norm and fantasy was fantastic. Additionally, the blend of combat and exploration elements kept me on my toes. 

You are Etienne Quinn, a once-acclaimed writer who has lost his ability to write. Having committed heinous crimes, the powers that be have shackled him for 30 years. Yet, Etienne has a chance to work illegally to remove this bind. By taking famous artefacts from each book, he can pay off his debts and get back to his writing. However, this route has its dangers and strange happenings occur at every turn.

A mysterious criminal world. 

Having your special gift removed is enough to drive a person insane. Consequently, the hero doesn’t think twice when he’s offered a way out. Yet, this decision leads him into a mysterious criminal world and a fantasy realm. At the start of each mission, a suitcase is delivered to your door. You never see the courier, and your task is often shrouded in secrecy. However, once you open the lid, all is revealed. 

A set of clues gives you an idea of what to expect. But it isn’t until you interact with the book that the madness truly begins. Here, you are transported within the story itself. Subsequently, you’ll interact with its characters and endure some pivotal plot points. As you venture deeper into the text, you’ll discover the location of your quest item. Furthermore, en route, you’ll have to solve problems, fight creatures, and use ink to manipulate your surroundings and overcome obstacles.

Ink and health. 

Like many classic adventure titles, The Bookwalker: Thief of Tales has some basic character mechanics. You have 2 stats to focus on, and a handful of skills to master. Accordingly, it is easy to get to grips with and little explanation is required at the beginning. 

The hero must keep his health and ink bar full. If he loses his health, it is game over. Alternatively, if his ink runs low, he cannot complete certain tasks and fighting becomes problematic. Therefore, you must search your surroundings to find food and other items. Thankfully, you can replenish your ink during combat, but more on that later. 

Excellent storytelling.

The core gameplay was fantastic. Yet, I want to acknowledge the excellent storytelling. The exploration elements work perfectly with the 2 protagonists’ dialogue. The hardy duo of a writer and his sentient caged page was incredible. By searching every scene, the pair find clues and meander from problem to problem. As they encounter a puzzle, the duo muse upon the possible solutions. Mostly, this leads to amusing interactions. However, occasionally, there were serious or dramatic moments that make you pay attention.

Each of these ordeals makes up the progression element of the gameplay. By solving each puzzle and opening new pathways, the pair can complete their tasks and get one step closer to home. However, occasionally, you must create tools to overcome your problems. By scavenging and searching crates and boxes, you’ll find resources. These items can be used at a workbench to make a crowbar, pliers, lock picks, and ink bottles. This was a clever way to force players to search their surroundings. You could ignore some of these unessential layers, but you’ll also miss masses of enjoyable content.

Fighting. 

The combat is probably the weakest area. The turn-based encounters force you to tackle a range of strange creatures. By picking your skill, you can stun, attack, or drain ink from your foes. As such, you must think wisely if you wish to succeed during every fight. 

You’ll have to balance your health and ink levels with an aggressive approach. Moreover, you’ll hope that luck is on your side. If you are lucky, your enemies will miss you and you’ll remain unscathed. However, this rarely happens and you’ll need to eat food if you wish to survive. Additionally, if you are low on ink, you’ll reduce your level of attack whilst you devour each creature’s ink. Consequently, you must consider each layer if you wish to be victorious.

The Bookwalker: Thief of Tales blends viewpoints. 

The action flows from 1st person to 3rd person perspectives. This was a fantastic design choice as it highlights reality vs the surreal book world. On top of this, the 1st person viewpoint creates a sense of oppression that matches the daunting atmosphere. Whenever I explored each book, I was amazed by the varied backdrops. Furthermore, the different themes and character models were great. Additionally, the muted colours and small spaces were fascinating to look at and explore. 

I was disappointed by the lack of spoken dialogue. Instead, you endure a mumbled sound that has subtitles. I think the game would have benefited from some acting, but sadly, this wasn’t to be. Instead, I enjoyed the excellent soundtrack and often absurd sound effects. Moreover, the fantastic text was well-considered, easy to read, and simple to follow.

Make each decision and live by it.
Did you sell something that you shouldn’t have?

I hated the controls. 

The controls were sluggish and annoying. For reasons unknown, the hero stares into space whenever you reach a dead-end. Now, this wouldn’t be an issue if he moved immediately. However, it can be seconds before you gain full control and this breaks up the action. On top of this, moving objects and throwing switches can be tedious. As such, this was an area that needs some work. 

With branching storylines and plenty of choices, this has loads of replay value. Though each act is relatively compact, this still has loads of longevity and scope to return. However, a lack of collectables or elements of lore was disappointing. Subsequently, it would have been nice to have some hidden Easter Eggs to search for.

The Bookwalker: Thief of Tales is a cracking indie title. 

Indie games go from strength to strength. As such, we are enjoying much higher quality from smaller development teams. Even so, The Bookwalker: Thief of Tales surprised me. Nearly every element was exceptional, and I adored the surreal storytelling. What’s more, it is free if you subscribe to Xbox Game Pass. Accordingly, I loved it and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you steal every artefact and get your life back? Collect the suitcase, enter the book, and tackle every crazy plot.

This game really couldn’t look more abrasive, but when it’s this fun, who cares?

Shooters are usually very deliberate about their HUDs. Designers tirelessly slave over the layout in order to ensure that the game and all of its elements are as clear as possible.

Post Void really couldn’t care less if you know what’s happening at any given time. In fact, it’s banking on you being so hyped up on adrenaline that you just keep moving. Your ammo count is inscrutable and reloads can be the death of you; your health is represented by a glowing head in your left hand which depletes over time and is only refilled with kills, so do you really want to waste time just to check it? Go. GO!

The levels in Post Void are square, almost liminal, cramped spaces with mostly head high ceilings and limited verticality. There is no map, there are 11 levels, and you need to do everything as fast as you can. This is the antithesis of movement shooters and it works perfectly.

What’s Happening? Who Cares? Keep Going!

The story of Post Void is perfect for me in that it’s just simple enough that I can ignore it entirely. You are someone who I’m sure will hereby be known as “Void Dude” or some variation thereof. You are looking to run through the game’s many office-like environments so that you can escape to the wilderness and stop your character’s splitting headache.

The game is either much deeper than I realize or exactly as shallow as I think, but seeing as how this isn’t a video essay, I think the story is great.

Music is another aspect of games that I tend to overlook. This is mostly due to the fact that I typically play with something else on in the background, but Post Void demands so much attention in the most unpretentious way that I was glued to my headphones. The soundtrack is the perfect post-punk counterpart to the hectic feel of everything else, and it’s especially digestible seeing as how it’s comprised of a single song.

Pick Now. Think Later.

With gameplay so hectic you may be asking how that can be sustained for an entire game. Well, in a way, it isn’t. Post Void is only 11 levels long, with each level taking maybe 20 to 30 seconds once you get competent at the game. An entire run will likely only take you around 6 minutes, but they’ll be some terrifying, wonderful minutes.

Whenever you beat a level, you get brought to this momentarily chill screen wherein you have to choose one of three upgrades. Some upgrades, like bigger clips or the compass seem like obvious choices, but some of the upgrades are more situational, so much so that you’ll often be confused as to who would ever want them in the first place. These sorts of upgrades, like ‘faster movement when going backwards’ and ‘+1 second to your lifespan’ seem like subversive jokes on the idea of roguelike upgrades; that is, until you start playing and realize how useful they can be.

Some of the upgrades allow you to change weapon; there are 4: 3 guns and 1 knife. That’s all you get. But at this point it’s probably relevant to bring up the fact that the game is only $6.

Buy It. Play It. Love It.

If you’re worried that this game could give you a headache, then you’re probably right, but you should buy it anyway; you will acclimate, and soon you will find yourself playing it for what feels like 20 minutes only to look out the window and see the sun coming up.

I haven’t been this invested in a roguelike since Vampire Survivors, and, like Vampire Survivors, it costs almost no money, and I will probably be playing it forever.

In November 2020, within a few days of one another, Sony and Microsoft launched the PS5 and Xbox Series 10 respectively. The timing could not have made it clearer that the lines had been drawn for all-out war.  Three years on, most keen gamers have chosen their allegiance, but what about those who are new to console gaming or ready to trade up an older console and thinking about switching allegiance?

The truth is that from a playing perspective, comparing the two consoles is a little like comparing the latest Toyota and Honda. They both do what they do well and there is really very little difference between them.

What it really comes down to is the games. Here, we will compare and contrast both their exclusive game libraries and their approach to specific game categories. 

PlayStation leads the way with AAA

When it comes to AAA exclusive titles, the list for Xbox is short on quantity, although quality is certainly impressive. Arguably, the biggest draw is Halo Infinite, the sixth entry in a Halo series that began way back in 2001. For those who like a good dose of realism in their gaming, the classic Microsoft Flight Simulator has been around forever, and the latest update includes some jaw-dropping additions, including a tie in with the Top Gun: Maverick movie. 

PS5, however, has some serious firepower in its catalogue of exclusive titles. Gran Turismo 7, for example, is without doubt the best racing game ever and continues the franchise’s proud legacy. Spiderman Remastered takes what was arguably the best PS4 game of them all and makes it even better. God of War Ragnarok has lived up to the significant hype and will take its place among the classics. These are just a few examples, and when it comes to big-hitting titles, the PS5 is hands-down winner.

Xbox Game Pass delivers superior bangs per buck

Both Sony and Microsoft have channeled plenty of investment into their Netflix-style cloud gaming subscription services. PlayStation plus has been around since 2010, but when Xbox Game Pass launched in 2017, it proved to be a tough competitor. 

Game Pass subscribers have instant access to new releases the day they hit the shelves, something that Sony cannot match. That places Microsoft’s service at a significant advantage. Prices are approximately the same, although Sony offers a discount for annual or quarterly subscriptions. Sony also offers a marginally superior service when it comes to online multiplayer gaming and screen sharing.

Ultimately, however, the instant access to new releases is the biggest difference between the services and it gives Xbox the edge. 

Casino gamers are still under served

Review: EchoBlade

EchoBlade is another indie title that won’t get the recognition it deserves. This unique game is unlike anything I’ve played before. Moreover, the unusual mechanics and dated aesthetics will divide its audience. Yet, if you fall for its charms, you’ll enjoy a weird adventure title. Alternatively, if you despise what you see, you’ll want to uninstall it almost immediately.

Developed by Sunset Arctic Games and Eastasiasoft Limited and published by the latter, this is a retro adventure title. What’s more, it has some minor combat elements and a few puzzles to solve. On top of this, there is a small character progression system and an array of traps to be wary of. However, it is the strange echolocation vision that makes this unique. Accordingly, navigating your surroundings and locating your enemies is no easy feat.

EchoBlade tells a tale of desperation.

For reasons unknown, you are locked in a dank and oppressive dungeon. Blind and desperate to be free, you do whatever it takes to escape the prison. Yet, it isn’t so easy as guards, traps, and darkness block your path. However, you are gifted with the power of echolocation. As such, every move you make illuminates your surroundings. Furthermore, every key item glows with a specific hue depending on its meaning. Therefore, you must solve problems, fight, and navigate the world, no matter the dangers you face.

EchoBlade does very little to set you on your way. Accordingly, once the action kicks off, you are left to your own devices. Now, this may sound mean, but I liked the drip-fed mechanics and the feeling of being out of my comfort zone. Furthermore, navigating a darkened room by limited means was tough, but enthralling. As such, though this is a rudimentary title, there is enough of a challenge to keep you entertained.

Simple mechanics.

The developers could have created a brutal game that was hard to understand and tougher to complete. However, they stuck to simple mechanics and a gentle learning curve. This was great, as the core concept was somewhat challenging to get used to. The hero is armed with a sword, crossbow, and a suit of armour. Additionally, they can jump, run, roll, and pick up items. Accordingly, each of these elements plays a key role as you try to escape the dungeon.

As you move, jump, or make noise, a stream of light radiates around you. This helps you to explore the surrounding world and find essential items. Furthermore, it highlights any possible dangers that you may face. Anything that can cause you pain has a red hue. Alternatively, key items appear yellow, and other elements have a brilliant white finish. On top of this, your footsteps can be retraced as each step is permanently etched on the floor.

The simple-to-understand ideas were great, as the blindness could have been unbearable. Once you understand what is required of you, you become accustomed to the strange mechanics and the darkness won’t bother you.

Solve the problems and find the keys.

Each area of the dungeon is broken down into manageable chunks. This was a fine move by the developers as it reduced the oppressive gameplay. The straightforward puzzles helped as well. Though you couldn’t see what you were doing, EchoBlade’s puzzles never felt too challenging. Once you understood the basic mechanics, every problem was easy to solve.

I wish I could say the same for the combat and the traps you encounter. Seeing a giant red hue approaching you was a daunting sight. Furthermore, the more you progress, the harder the obstacles became. As such, you must slay every person you encounter whilst avoiding spikes, poison, circular saws, and much more.

EchoBlade looks dated.

There are no two ways about it, EchoBlade isn’t an attractive-looking game! Its dated aesthetic and rough textures leave a lot to be desired. However, it strangely works, and I enjoyed the retro approach. Moreover, the simple but expansive stage design was interesting to explore. Additionally, the use of vivid hues and darkened rooms creates a suspenseful atmosphere.

The audio is awfully old-school. As such, the sound bites are gruff, repetitive, and dull. What’s more, the sound effects are rough but suitable for each task. Accordingly, this won’t blow you away! However, you’ll endure the madness during each short chapter.

The controls weren’t great.

Unfortunately, the controls weren’t as responsive as I’d have liked. Subsequently, each combat encounter is slow and arduous. What’s more, the crossbow is inaccurate and dodging each trap is occasionally a tough ask. As such, you’ll be frustrated as you try to complete each task.

A few of the key elements disappointed me. Yet, the replay value and longevity impressed me. EchoBlade allows you to revisit each chapter to explore the dungeon fully. As you take branching pathways, you’ll find secrets and each key to unlock the master gateway. Moreover, the basic character progression system allows you to improve the hero. Though this was a minor thing, it made the action much easier while giving you something to work towards.

EchoBlade is a good, albeit unusual indie title.

EchoBlade has its shortcomings. Yet, it is a good, albeit unusual indie title. I enjoyed the strange echolocation and its subsequent exploration mechanics. However, the poor controls hold it back. Consequently, this will frustrate gamers and put many of you off. Yet, despite its issues, I enjoyed my time with it. Accordingly, I recommend that you buy it here! Can you get used to the darkness and escape? Find the keys, kill the guards, and overcome every obstacle.

VanillaBeast: Retro Knock-Out! is a funny-as-hell parody experience that’ll push you all the way. This old-school boxing experience is tongue-in-cheek, rude, and undeniably amusing. However, its simple approach may be too understated for some, and its crude language and imagery will not appeal to everyone.

Developed and published by Vanilla Gaming Company, this is a boxing simulation title. Moreover, it has a dark sense of humour, pixelated graphics, and a fight with a shark. Consequently, what is not to like in this guttural sports experience?

VanillaBeast: Retro Knock-Out! is the new Rocky Balboa.

Everyone loves Rocky Balboa. This loveable chap is always the underdog, even though he has won practically every fight he’s taken part in. Accordingly, this is the feeling that VanillaBeast: Retro Knock-Out! tries to generate. Yet, the cocky protagonist and masses of naked women make it hard for you to empathise with the hero.

This unknown boxer is discovered in a strip club. He spends his time enjoying the dancers and other unmentionable endeavours. However, he loses his temper with a meathead and all hell breaks loose. Unwilling to back down, Vanilla Beast lets his fists do the talking. Consequently, this encounter gets him noticed and the promise of money, women, and power twists his arm. As such, he begins training to become the next big thing. Yet, he doesn’t realise that 30+ fights stand between him and world domination.

An old-school experience.

VanillaBeast: Retro Knock-Out! does a great job of blending comic book cinematic with pixelated fixed-screen fights. Accordingly, the core action was reminiscent of Punch-Out. This excellent retro boxing game was adored by its Nintendo fan base. Moreover, its straightforward and hard-hitting approach made it a moreish but easy-to-follow experience.

Thankfully, though, this game has more depth to it. With training to complete, a ridiculous but enjoyable story to enjoy, and 3 divisions to top, there is plenty to keep you busy. On top of this, the Leisure Suit Larry jokes and wonderful boxing parodies will have you chuckling throughout. Additionally, the incredible character models were wonderfully accurate, and this added to the hilarity.

Do you recognise that boxer?

Tough but easy to understand.

This was easy to understand but tough to master. Unfortunately, the basic gameplay lulls you into a false sense of security. Effectively, all you must do is dodge and weave to stay alive while reading your opponent’s “tell”. If you can do this, you will build up your stamina and gain “Power Punches” (PP). These OTT shots are essential if you wish to knock out your foe. Yet, if you are hit, you lose this skill and you must try again.

Each fight follows a similar pattern. Before you hit the ring, you must complete a training regime. If you are successful, you will increase your stats for the fight ahead. Once this is completed, you are sent to the ring to annihilate your opponent. However, this is easier said than done, and every fight takes a lot of effort. Subsequently, you will have to study your enemy’s fighting style and understand what their “tell” looks like. On top of this, you’ll have to maintain your stamina and health if you wish to succeed.

If you fail to beat your opponent, it is not the end of the world. Instead, you must train again and try each fight repeatedly. If you win, you will move up the rankings and the story will progress. As this happens, you’ll enjoy an array of smutty and tasteless cutscenes. The provocative moments are silly, rude, and in keeping with the adult mindset.

VanillaBeast: Retro Knock-Out! looks dated but fantastic.

The developers have done an amazing job with this title. The old-school pixelated art style and the excellent venues were great to look at. Moreover, the character models were amusing, and this added to the humorous nature of the game. Alongside this, the animation is smooth but simple and the colour palette is vivid and in your face. Disappointingly, though, there isn’t any blood and there are also no visible injuries no matter how hard you fight. Had this been incorporated into the action, then the game would have been vastly improved.

The audio made me cringe and chuckle. The loud sound effects worked perfectly with every thrown punch and every dodged blow. Additionally, the sound of the PP landing on your opponent’s head was brilliant but uncomfortable. Alongside this, I loved the crowd noises and the other familiar ambient sounds.

Excellent controls.

Whenever a PC game utilises full controller support, I smile. Thankfully, VanillaBeast: Retro Knock-Out! does an amazing job with its control setup. Consequently, you may use a mouse and keyboard or a console controller. Either way, the button mapping is simple and easy to understand. Furthermore, the inputs are responsive and that was fantastic. Much of the gameplay requires rapid reactions and memory recall. Subsequently, it was essential to have reactive inputs that kept you one step ahead of your opponents.

Though the action is relatively rudimentary, there is still some replay value. If you so wished, you can return to fight anyone again. Alternatively, you can practise every fight or undertake hours of training. Additionally, there is a wonderful story to enjoy and some crazy characters to encounter. As such, this has loads of replay value and longevity.

VanillaBeast: Retro Knock-Out! A great trip down memory lane.

Punch-Out was an addictive game that was tough to put down. Subsequently, if any title attempts to replicate its gameplay, then I’m sold. This wonderful trip down memory lane was tough and occasionally frustrating. However, once you understood what was happening, you could master each fight and be crowned champion of each category. As such, I loved this game and I recommend that you buy it here! Boxing is more than a sport, it’s a way to get rich and become powerful! Can you become the next big thing?
