Layers of Fear (2023) gives this much-loved title a modern polish. Built on Unreal Engine 5, this exceptional game supports Ray Tracing, HDR, and 4K resolution. Moreover, it includes every game and DLC in the franchise and will impress existing and new fans alike. Now, I know the idea of another remake/remastered game is tedious. However, this is one modern remake that you won’t want to miss.

Developed by Anshar Studios and Bloober Team SA and published by the latter, this is a narrative horror title. What’s more, there are traditional jump scares and some minor puzzle elements. Furthermore, the setting is outstanding, the 4K finish is mesmerising, and the audio is out of this world. As such, this is a breathtaking experience that you cannot afford to miss.

Layers of Fear (2023) tells a disturbing story.

You play the part of a crazed painter who is obsessed with perfection. His magnum opus drives his madness as he pushes his wife away. However, it is this psychotic state that generates the disturbing narrative gameplay. As the painter’s world falls apart, the surrounding world burns and melts away. Furthermore, Layers of Fear (2023) beautifully intertwine other viewpoints in chronological order. As such, the story makes more sense and plot holes are wonderfully filled.

This complete version includes Layers of Fear and the Inheritance DLC, Layers of Fear 2, The Lighthouse Chapter, and the Final Note DLC. Mostly, the additional content stays true to its original form. However, the Final Note DLC alters the perspective of the Painter’s wife. This was an excellent move that generates a fresh outlook on the protagonist’s relationship. Additionally, The Lighthouse Chapter cements every element to create a worthy conclusion that clears up any misunderstandings. As such, this modern version will impress fans of the franchise.

Horrific gameplay.

Layers of Fear (2023) could be accused of being a walking simulation title. Yet, I think this is unfair. Yes, much of the action demands a slow and methodical approach, but the gameplay is genuinely captivating. The horrific nature of the action is uncomfortable from the off. Moreover, you’ll be on the edge of your seat as the world evolves and crumbles around you.

As you explore your Victorian mansion, you soon realise the world is not as it seems. Your psychological mindset plays tricks on you and your paintings come to life. Additionally, haunting notes of arguments with your wife punctuate every chapter. Consequently, you are drip-fed key moments that help to put the meat onto the bone.

What the hell is that?

Cliched jump scares.

Some may argue that cliched jump scares are a thing of the past. However, I think the developers have incorporated them brilliantly. The oppressive atmosphere makes your heart race. Yet, it is the cheesy jump scares that make you leap out of your skin. You’ll swear repeatedly as minor parlour tricks catch you out.

Alongside this, you’ll grind your teeth as the scary action draws you in. The ever-changing mansion plays with your mind and you won’t know if you are coming or going. Furthermore, minor puzzles and problems generate some head-scratching moments that offer some light relief. This combination of storytelling and rudimentary problem-solving was incredible. Yet, you never know when the next horrific moment was, therefore, you could never relax, and that was fascinating.

Layers of Fear (2023) looks incredible.

The original wasn’t a bad-looking game. Yet, thanks to Unreal Engine 5, it now looks phenomenal. The seamless transition between rooms and the beautifully oppressive environments is stunning. Moreover, the animation of the failing world will blow your mind. I adored the creepy first-person perspective as it enhances the sinister nature of the gameplay without milking the genre too much.

Visually, this is incredible! However, it is the amazing soundscape that wins the day. The spectacular ambient sound will send shivers down your spine. Moreover, the excellent soundtrack adds to the creepy atmosphere. If you then consider the excellent acting, you’ll fall for Layers of Fear (2023’s) horror charms.

The control system is well-considered. As such, it is easy to understand what must be done, and every task is straightforward. Furthermore, completing each puzzle is a cinch as the controls are responsive and well laid out.

Every chapter contains plenty of collectables, notes, and other minor items. As such, there are plenty of things to look for as you uncover the maddening truth. Additionally, the full array of DLC will keep you busy for hours. Subsequently, Layers of Fear (2023) is fantastic value for money and a must-have horror experience.

Mega City Police is a fast-paced and hectic title that will make your head spin. This brutal rogue-lite will test your skills and your patience as you die repeatedly. Moreover, the vast number of enemies and cruel bosses will push you to your limits. Focusing on arena-based gameplay, players must scope out their surroundings while overcoming each wave of foes.

Developed by Undreamed Games and published by Ravenage Games, this is a rogue-lite shooter. What’s more, it has unlockable characters with many strengths and weaknesses. Accordingly, some excellent tactical nuances will appease veterans of this genre.

Stand back and watch your rockets fly.
How do you like my little rocket?

Mega City Police: a game with no tale.

Sadly, Mega City Police has a cliched backstory. Furthermore, there isn’t an overarching story to get your teeth into. Instead, players are told of a grim city that is overrun by criminal scum. Additionally, a corrupt megacorporation is squeezing every citizen so that it can bolster its profit margins. However, this pain and torture will soon end as one hero steps up to save the day. Yet, this task isn’t easy as death and failure are all but assured.

The action focuses on a plethora of unique arenas. Each of these locations is formed of 3 stages that become progressively harder. As you venture from area to area, the waves of enemies become more intense, and the projectiles fly and the explosions become mind-boggling. Consequently, you must use your wits and skills to avoid every bullet and dodge every exploding car, barrel, and rocket.

Plenty of weapons and upgrades.

As you massacre every demented criminal, they drop money and weapons. Both of these items are essential if you wish to be victorious. Alongside this, there are weapon crates, ammunition, rockets, and energy packs to keep you going. Moreover, if you are lucky, you’ll find medical kits to keep your health bar full. As you pick up each gun or melee tool, you must adjust your approach accordingly. Alternatively, if you do not like your new arsenal of weapons, you can simply pick up your discarded gun and carry on.

On top of this, as you finish each chapter, you have the opportunity to upgrade your character and your weapons. Whether you decide to improve your speed or your ammo, the choice is yours. What’s more, you can undertake challenges to earn more cash. I found these to be particularly tough, especially when you are expected to hit 90% accuracy for a whole level. However, veterans of the genre will relish this additional level of difficulty.

Boss battles.

If the action wasn’t punishing enough, the boss battles will test your resolve. Additionally, you can adjust the difficulty settings to push yourself further still. If, like me, you opt for the easy option, you’ll enjoy a testing but achievable challenge. Yet, the boss encounters gradually become harder, and this ensures that Mega City Police is no walk in the park.

Each overlord is armed to the teeth with rockets, machine guns, and a cruel attitude. Furthermore, you’ll have to deal with their army of goons as well as the occasional sidekick. Subsequently, this is no easy feat and you’ll fall at the last hurdle repeatedly. Luckily, though, if this happens, you can resume the action from the start of that level, so you do not lose too much progress.

Mega City Police looks great.

I adored the top-down perspective of Mega City Police. This colourful and detailed arrangement was perfect for this arena-based shooter. Moreover, it made it easier to navigate the small but intricate stages. On top of this, I loved each character model and how every enemy reflected the theme of each stage. Accordingly, it was the small details that made this title special.

Mega City Police reminded me of an 80s action film. Thanks to the excellent synth wave soundtrack, you’ll love the pumping music. Additionally, there is a fantastic range of tracks to enjoy and some crunching sound effects to endure. Each weapon sounded fantastic, and I especially loved the bludgeoning sound of every melee weapon. Alongside this, the electric weapons will bring a wry smile as you zap and blast every one of your opponents.

The world of Mega City Police is small but interesting.
Take down the criminal scum in each area.

Incredible controls.

The words “Full-Controller support” make me smile. Thankfully, this is what you get when you tackle this game. As such, this is wonderful to play whether you use a mouse and keyboard or a gamepad. Furthermore, I can see this working well with Steam Deck. However, I didn’t test this option so I cannot confirm its validity. Yet, what I can say is that the inputs are responsive and the controls are easy to understand.

Another area where this excels is its replay value and longevity. Though there aren’t many levels to tackle, the varied gameplay and large cast of characters mitigate this shortcoming. Additionally, there are so many weapons and upgrades that you can test different tactics until the cows come home. Therefore, you can lose many hours as you try to tackle the criminal scum.

Mega City Police is an amazing indie title.

I love how the rogue-lite genre is evolving. What’s more, Mega City Police reminded me of OTXO thanks to its smooth arena-based action and its arsenal of cruel weapons. Alongside this, the hard-hitting audio and flawless graphics create a fantastic experience. Subsequently, I adored this game and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you tackle the scum that has taken over your city? Choose a hero, grab some guns, and get to work.

Review: Dragon Quest Treasures

The year is 2020, there’s this thing called COVID, and I’m stuck at home with next to nothing to do. Schools have shut and we are running a reduced timetable of online lessons leaving me with all these hours to fill during the week. It was this “freedom” that widened my gaming repertoire to include some of my favourite experiences, Persona 5 is the one that stands out the most, but it is closely followed by a game called Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age.

Not the most marketable title but following Persona I was looking for a JRPG, turned-based combat, irreverent experience and Dragon Quest XI delivered in spades.

However, since that game, startling little has emerged from Square Enix as regarding a sequel. What we have had, and will continue to with Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince later this year, are various spinoff titles.

Enter Dragon Quest Treasures. Taking a couple of the side characters from Dragon Quest XI, it tells a unique tale following Erik and Mia as children. As the title would suggest, the game revolves around the pursuit of treasure, a sentiment I can get behind in this age of everything costing approximately $ 1 million. Swapping back and forth between Erik and Mia for different segments of the story, you are accompanied by a variety of the monsters that were the bane of your existence in the mainline entry.

The world is very familiar even if it technically isn’t the same plane of existence. The art, music, and humour are all the same, the only real differences appear in the game’s mechanics as we say goodbye to the turn-based combat of XI and introduce a real-time action focus as seen in the Final Fantasy series in recent years.

Some of the monsters have dumb/great names

The real quirk here is that as the protagonists are children here, understandably your characters aren’t particularly proficient in combat just yet. Therefore the main power in your party comes from the monsters you befriend as you progress through the campaign. Whether it be slimes, drackies, orcs or any else from the cornucopia of beasts inhabiting the world, you can be joined by any of these provided you are willing to put the work in to persuade them to join your cause. The “work” in this case is hitting them with a special friend pellet from your slingshot and then paying them gold or whatever later on. What a slime wants with gold I’ve no idea.

Whilst Erik and Mia are consumed by gold lust, your winged companions Porcus (he’s a pig) and Purrsula (she’s a cat) have their sights set slightly higher, throughout your quest, you will seek the legendary seven Dragonstones, what they do, is to be seen.

As mentioned before the world is exactly as I remember it, exaggerated features, ridiculous dialogue, and beautiful vistas. The music is epic and exactly what you’d expect from a Square Enix JRPG, driving you through the story with a real sense of scale and weight.

Combat is the real difference and it’s solid. I would have preferred the good old turn-based system to return but I understand the need for some diversity otherwise this may as well have been a mainline entry. Basically, you encounter an enemy, and your companions take over. It’s akin to what I imagine a real-time combat Pokémon game might look like which don’t get me wrong is fun, but it did leave me feeling somewhat pointless as I stood off to the side watching the carnage unfold, you can get involved should you desire but there’s really little need to outside of some boss encounters.

One cool innovation is the introduction of monster abilities. Depending on which companions you choose you have access to a number of special abilities. Slimes allow you to bounce on them to reach high-up places. Drackies will let you glide on them to access new areas, and Orcs use their oversized sniffers to locate hidden treasure. As you unlock more friends, you get more powers, increasing the scope with which you can consider the world around you. This is a stark improvement given that DQ XI had two modes of transport: legs or horse legs.

Somewhat mystifying how daggers can fix a train but ok

Overall, Dragon Quest Treasures is a charming spin-off to the mainline series that satisfies the DQ itch but does leave me wanting more as the grand scope of the campaign isn’t quite there for me. That might be the point, a smaller, more intimate story, but it’s not my cup of tea. Hopefully, Monsters later this year is good, but I yearn for Dragon Quest XII but given the complete radio silence on that since 2017 I don’t expect much soon.

Let’s move to something scary, shall we? For all my horror film lovers out there, the star of today is Huesera: The Bone Woman which came out in 2022 starring in the key role as Valeria, Natalia Solian. The movie will keep you and your whole focus in front of the TV for 1 hour and 33 minutes. We see Valeria, a member of the middle class who is actively trying to conceive. Valeria is shown pleading with higher powers to help her conceive as the movie opens. 

At first glance, one may conclude that Valeria aspires to have children and that becoming pregnant would bring her the utmost joy. But as soon as Valeria finds out she’s pregnant, the titular Bone Woman begins tormenting her. Valeria is being followed by the strange being, putting her baby and her family in peril. So, when Valeria is cursed by the evil thing, her joy at becoming a mother for the first time, which she has long awaited, is swiftly taken away. The featured review in IMDbsays that this is a movie that many young parents can relate to, since welcoming your first child can be a challenging and rather difficult.

Review: Aliens: Dark Descent

Aliens: Dark Descent reignites an atmospheric fantasy franchise. This bone-chilling world is full of death, despair, and destruction. Accordingly, it is an atmospheric beast that keeps you on the edge of your toes. However, this series has been milked to death, and this may be one step too far. Alternatively, if you love the franchise, you’ll adore the sinister maps, uncomfortable missions, and tactical nuance. As such, this has the ability to divide its audience. So, shall we see what I thought of it?

Developed by Tindalos Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment, this is a real-time strategy title. What’s more, there are some minor RPG elements as you customise your squadron of marines. Moreover, there are plenty of research elements, massive maps to explore, and, of course, waves of Xenomorphs to annihilate. Consequently, there are plenty of plates to spin and loads of balls to juggle at once.

Aliens: Dark Descent tells an all too familiar tale.

Aliens: Dark Descent doesn’t stray too far from the well-trodden tropes of the series. Accordingly, the opening gambit offers limited surprises and everything feels familiar. Effectively, all that is different are the characters, the location, and the names of the people that get slaughtered. Now, this isn’t a complaint, as I fell for the story and the clichéd protagonists.

The year is 2198 and the Weyland-Yutani corporation is going strong. Set 19 years after the original trilogy, the money-grabbing bastards haven’t learnt from their mistakes. Instead, it is up to deputy administrator Maeko Hayes to become a hero. A strange container has been delivered to the Pioneer Station. Its contents are deadly, and this sets off a chain of life-altering events. As Hayes witnesses some horrific ordeals, she makes irreversible decisions. Unfortunately, these choices have dire consequences! Subsequently, she must help the marines aboard the Otago to prevent the Xenomorphs from spreading.

Incredible gameplay. 

The plot may not have evolved as much as I’d have liked. However, the gameplay was incredible! The action revolves around a squad of 4 marines. Each person has a set of skills and personality traits. These elements are key to how you plan each mission, and success and failure are finely balanced. As you progress through each mission, you are given new mechanics to work with that enhance your tactical choices. Moreover, there is a fine research and development tree to focus on.

Alongside this, you can tailor each marine with a refined but interesting skill tree. By specialising each soldier, you can increase your chances of success. Will you create a medic or a hacker? Alternatively, you can opt for a sniper or an officer. Whatever you choose, they’ll give you more strings to your bow. However, that is not all. Injuries, fear, and fatigue all play a key role. As such, you may have the perfect squadron lined up. Yet, you may have to take a rookie, as your number one choice is temporarily put out of action.

Challenging missions. 

When a game forewarns you about its challenging nature, you begin to worry. In this instance, the developers were right to warn you as Aliens: Dark Descent is brutal. With so many layers to focus on, something has to give. Normally, you push your people too hard and this adversely affects their performance. However, if you do not do so, the Xenomorphs become progressively tougher, and the game is harder still. 

Each mission is broken down into main objectives and side quests. On top of this, you are required to hunt for resources, find ammo, tools and medkits, and search for data pads. Furthermore, there are survivors to rescue, Facehuggers to burn, and plenty of aliens to destroy. Alongside all of that, you must ensure the team rest to mitigate the effects of stress. As such, you must create shelters in order to relax. These little touches were amazing as they permanently altered the gaming world. If you extract your squad and then return, every welded door, destroyed wall, and blown-up barrel is still there. 

An array of aliens requires a tactical mindset. 

The developers weren’t happy with one type of alien. Instead, the Xenomorphs are a varied and hardy bunch. Additionally, there are cultists and corporation asshats to overcome. Luckily, the latter two are pretty straightforward to defeat. The aliens, on the other hand, will break your balls repeatedly. 

These fast and aggressive bastards love to slice, dice, and dissect you. Alternatively, they’ll carry you away to feast on you later. Either way, they will hurt, maim, and kill your squad in an instant. If that wasn’t bad enough, their acid blood causes all sorts of problems. Moreover, the giant Xenomorphs are a pain in the arse. Just when you think you have everything under control, these unruly twats do everything in their power to ruin your day. Whether they sprint towards you, crush you, or slash you to pieces, it won’t end well. 

Luckily, though, you have a few tricks up your sleeves. This real-time strategy game can be slowed down. This was a great design choice as it helps to set ambushes while balancing the gameplay. Thankfully, you can set traps, whilst you hide behind cover. However, remember that aliens can crawl through walls, so anything is possible.

Glitches and bugs. 

Aliens: Dark Descent got under my skin. Yet, the glitches and the bugs taint this extraordinary experience. Unfortunately, there are so many game-breaking issues that you’ll be frustrated and disheartened repeatedly. I played this for countless hours, but every level was punctuated by problems. 

The game crashed regularly, or my squad was stuck in a darkened room. Alternatively, quest objectives failed to progress or a squad member became stuck in a wall or lift. However, my favourite was when I dropped a survivor and he vanished into thin air. This problem happened not once, not twice, but three times on the bounce! How the hell has this been released with this many bugs is beyond me.

I’m sure that the developers are actively patching their game. Yet, in the meantime, you’ll have to endure some unnecessarily challenging moments. Accordingly, be prepared to be frustrated while you waste your precious time. 

Aliens: Dark Descent looks grim. 

This seedy sci-fi title does a fantastic job. Visually, it creates a grim and oppressive world to explore. Moreover, the cinematic was fantastic, and the animation was flawless. Alongside this, there were no frame rate issues, and I adore the permanent changes to every level. However, I can’t ignore the bugs as this taints an otherwise excellent experience. 

The audio is both amazing and shite in equal measure. Let me start with the negatives. The sound bites are as annoying as a child screaming on a long train or plane journey. The repetitive and shrill noise will bore into your brain like a dentist’s drill. Consequently, it’ll drive you insane. However, if you can ignore the constant screams and repetitive commands, you’ll enjoy the soundtrack and sound effects. The meaty guns, hideous aliens, and atmospheric ambient noises were phenomenal. Additionally, the acting was top-notch, and the cinematic benefited as a result.

It plays superbly on console. 

I expected this to be a bit of a farcical endeavour. Strategy games and controllers rarely go hand-in-hand. However, Aliens: Dark Descent works superbly on console. Thanks to the excellent tutorial and incredible UI, this performs exceptionality well. Furthermore, the complexities are stripped-back and each layer is relatively easy to understand. 

In its current state, it is hard to keep playing. Knowing that the game will crash or fail is a disheartening experience. As such, the developers need to get the issues solved. However, once the problems are ironed out, this will keep you busy for hours. Each mission can be revisited to gather all the missing resources. Moreover, you may find survivors, or you can train a spare squadron as a backup. Either way, this has the potential for replay value and longevity. 

Despite its issues, I loved Aliens: Dark Descent. 

I found Aliens: Dark Descent to be a challenging, enjoyable, but equally frustrating game. There is so much potential that I became increasingly annoyed with the developers. One or two bugs can slip through, but the problems were never-ending. However, I can see this being rectified and when this happens, it’ll be a spectacular and moreish title. As such, despite its issues, I loved it and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you help the Marines and save the day? Upgrade your equipment, tackle every mission, and wipe out those Xenomorphs.
