Serviio Media Server Add-in for Windows Home Server

Paul York has just been in touch to let us know about an add-in he has just released for Windows Home Server V1 called Serviio Media Server.It’s in beta at the moment.

This is what Paul said:

The add-in manages (and optionally installs) Petr Nejedly’s excellent and free Serviio DLNA media server. If you’re not familiar with Serviio, it is a transcoding-capable media server that “just works.” It streams just about every media file out there to any device, and based on a device profile, transcodes the media only if necessary for that device. it was recently recommended by Sony as “the” server to use for it’s TV’s, Blu-Ray players, and game console.

Review of My Movies for Windows Home Server 2011 2.0 Pre Release 7

We have talked about My Movies in the past, and with the release of My Movies for Windows Home Server 2011 2.0 Pre Release 7 last week, it’s time for our review.

What is My Movies for Windows Home Server 2011?

According to the My Movies website:

My Movies for Windows Home Server is a single add-on program for Windows Home Server, providing a set of features around movies and music, making it the perfect solution for adding, identifying and maintaining movie and music data on your Windows Home Server, serving it to different Media Center solutions or music playback devices.

My Movies for Windows Home Server 2011 overall contains the same functionality as My Movies for Windows Home Server, but where My Movies for Windows Home Server shares components with My Movies 3, My Movies for Windows Home Server 2011 shares components with My Movies 4.00. This also means that My Movies for Windows Home Server 2011 contains monitoring functions for TV Series as included in My Movies 4.00, which My Movies for Windows Home Server does not.

As of today, My Movies for Windows Home Server 2011 is still in beta, but according to the website it should be released by the end of May (although today is the 30th May), so expect it sometime in June.

Installing the Add-In

Once you have downloaded the add-in, double-click it to start the installation.

Click Install the Add-in to continue.

After the add-in has successfully installed, click Close.

Changing the Workgroup Name in Windows Home Server 2011

If you have installed Windows Home Server 2011, you will notice the workgroup name is WORKGROUP and you can’t change it. Well, Diehard was good enough to post in our forums how to do it and I have expanded on it here.

[box type=”alert” style=”rounded” border=”full”]WARNING: Some people are reporting that once they have changed the WORKGROUP name that the Dashboard will no longer load. The only way to fix this is to perform a server reinstall, so if you not sure DO NOT attempt to change the WORKGROUP name.[/box]

So here are the steps you need to follow to change the Workgroup name to match your network:

Use Remote Desktop Connection and connect to the server (of if you have a monitor, keyboard and mouse connected to the server just go to the desktop)

Start > Right-click Computer > Manage

Under Roles Summary section, click Remove Roles on the right side

Click Next

Uncheck Active Directory Certificate Services and click Next

Click Remove

Using the Enclosure

Using the enclosure is very simple – just press the button on the front of the enclosure to open the drive bay door and then slide in the 2.5” drive and close the door. Simple!

Once the drive is in you can connect the enclosure to your computer using a USB cable and just access the drive. When it is connected the blue light on the front of the enclosure will light up.

Or you can slide the enclosure into one of the Aleratec Hard Disk Drive Duplicators, such as the 1:1 HDD Cruiser we previously reviewed.

Final Thoughts

This is a really useful little bit of kit. I have managed to build up a few 2.5” SATA drives over the years and so having an enclosure that is simple to use is great.

The enclosure feels very sturdy and looks very smart.

The price for a pack of two premium enclosures is $44.99. You may be thinking why you would need two, but if you want to duplicate 2.5” drives you will probably need them both.

Although maybe Aleratec should consider selling them singularly as well? And hopefully in the future Aleratec will produce a USB 3.0 version as well.

Here we take a look at a USB to IDE or SATA standalone hard drive duplicator and docking station from StarTech – the UNIDUPDOCK.

Fixes:

Fixed an incorrect warning in the Performance Report. If a volume is smaller than 2GB (e.g. a recovery partition), on which IntelliWrite may not be enabled, this is not flagged in the Performance Report as not optimal configuration.

New Features:

Added date, time, and product version to the saved and printed Job Reports.
IntelliWrite, if you have licensed HyperFast, can now be enabled on SSD-backed volumes (note the default setting is “off”).

My Movies for Windows Home Server Updated

Along with the My Movies 4 for Windows Media Center update today, Brian has also released an update to both the Windows Home Server V1 and Windows Home Server 2011 editions of My Movies.

Windows Home Server V1

My Movies for Windows Home Server operates as database back-end for My Movies clients in multi-zone environments. My Movies for Windows Home Server 1.6.1.6 operates as back-end server for My Movies 3.20. Users of My Movies 4 should use the 2.00 Pre Release 1 version.

The My Movies for Windows Media Center or My Movies Collection Management products can be downloaded and installed on client PC’s to maintain movies in the database on My Movies for Windows Home Sever.

There is also a pre-release version you can test:

My Movies for Windows Media Center and My Movies Collection Management 4.01 PR3 Released

If you have been using the fantastic My Movies for Windows Media Center version 4, then there is another update.This is a pre-release updates that fix a number of bugs and adds some new functionality.

Here is what is included in PR 3:

My Movies for Windows Media Center and My Movies Collection Management 4.01 Pre Release 3

Added: Play next unwatched episode feature.
Added: PowerDVD 11 to external players configuration.

Change: “Specials” is now sorted last on season overview.
Change: Debug is now enabled again by default during Pre Release. It was disabled previously due to a mistake.

Fix: Resume was missing from detailed view.

Fix: TV Episode listings could be blank due to an invalid SQL sentence.
Fix: SaveTV properties file included an incorrect running time.

My Movies for Windows Media Center and My Movies Collection Management 4.01 Pre Release 1

Added: Ctrl+W and remote “Clear” button now toggles an elements watch status when clicked in lists.
Added: Small and Transparent icon styles.
Added: “By episode added date” sorting added.
Added: Resume functionalities for movies, including VIDEO_TS folders.

Fix: Some TV Series on the Dune’s did not play.
Fix: An invalid genre could cause a crash.
Fix: minor error when editing profile pictures.
Fix: Minor adjustments due to incoming crash logs.
Fix: Bug when adding a new TV series without a language specific title and showing it in the title list.
Fix: Print report did not include nodes in series/box sets.
Fix: Null pointer error when trying to get the name of an episode without a name.
Fix: If a title somehow got an empty title, the Dune index could get destroyed by it.
Fix: error in FolderMonitoring when handling queue with directories that has been updated.
Fix: Update of all persons didn’t update the date for when the person was last updated.
Fix: Update of TV Series is now done one series at a time, to avoid freeze of progress.
Fix: Decades on Dune meta-data storage could include titles from wrong production years.

Change: Debug disabled by default.
Change: Overlay icons changed to match profile.
Change: Last added now sorts by “Episode added date” instead of added date for TV Series and Seasons.
Change: Watched icon on lists are now also configurable.
Change: Watched icon on lists are now also configurable.

Update: MediaInfo.dll files
