Serviio Media Server Add-in for Windows Home Server

Paul York has just been in touch to let us know about an add-in he has just released for Windows Home Server V1 called Serviio Media Server. It’s in beta at the moment.

This is what Paul said:

The add-in manages (and optionally installs) Petr Nejedly’s excellent and free Serviio DLNA media server. If you’re not familiar with Serviio, it is a transcoding-capable media server that “just works.” It streams just about every media file out there to any device, and based on a device profile, transcodes the media only if necessary for that device. it was recently recommended by Sony as “the” server to use for it’s TV’s, Blu-Ray players, and game console.

HONG KONG – May 31, 2011 – ZOTAC® International, a leading innovator and the world’s largest channel manufacturer of graphics cards, motherboards and mini-PCs, today unleashes the Z68-ITX WiFi and Z68-ITX WiFi Supreme – a pair of mini-ITX platforms designed for the most adventurous and demanding enthusiasts. The ZOTAC® Z68-ITX WiFi series enables users to take advantage of all features of 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ family processors including integrated graphics, overclocking and Intel® Quick-Sync Video technology.

Powered by the latest Intel® Z68 Express chipset, the ZOTAC® Z68-ITX WiFi series enables adventurous enthusiasts to extract every ounce of performance available from 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ while maintaining use of Intel® GMA HD 2000/3000 series integrated graphics processors. Support for Intel® Quick-Sync Video technology enables lightning-fast video transcoding for virtually instant video conversions to popular portable media players with the ZOTAC® Z68-ITX WiFi series.

Lucid Virtu software is bundled with the ZOTAC® Z68-ITX WiFi series to let users combine the high-speed transcoding capabilities of Intel® Quick-Sync Video and discrete ZOTAC® GeForce® series graphics cards for the ultimate high-performance combination.

“The ZOTAC® Z68-ITX WiFi series is our most ambitious mini-ITX offering to date – never before have we been able to match a full ATX board in features and overclocking capabilities.” said Carsten Berger, marketing director, ZOTAC® International.

The ZOTAC® Z68-ITX WiFi series feature support for mSATA SSD drives for insanely-fast storage performance from a pint-size form factor. The ZOTAC® Z68-ITX WiFi features a switchable combo mSATA / mini-PCI Express slot, occupied by a WiFi card, while the ZOTAC® Z68-ITX WiFi Supreme has a dedicated mSATA slot on the backside of the board.

SATA 6.0 Gb/s and SATA 3.0 Gb/s ports are available on the ZOTAC® Z68-ITX WiFi series for connectivity with standard 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch hard drives and SSDs. Intel® Smart Response Technology, or SRT, enables users to pair smaller capacity SSD drives with large hard disk drives for superior performance and system-responsiveness without sacrificing storage capacity with the ZOTAC® Z68-ITX WiFi series.

“Storage performance is the greatest bottleneck for modern PCs. With the support for mSATA and Intel® SRT technology, our ZOTAC® Z68-ITX WiFi boards substantially improve storage performance when paired with the right hardware,” Mr. Berger added.

The ZOTAC® Z68-ITX WiFi packs mini-DisplayPort and dual HDMI outputs for users that take advantage of the integrated Intel® GMA HD 2000 / 3000 graphics processors found on 2nd Generation Intel® Core family processors. A full-speed PCI Express x16 slot is available on the ZOTAC® Z68-ITX WiFi for users that demand greater 3D performance.

The ZOTAC® Z68-ITX WiFi Supreme improves 3D capabilities by integrating a GeForce® GT 430 graphics processor with 1GB of DDR3 memory to enable stunning DirectX® 11 visuals, NVIDIA® CUDA™ technology and the ability to drive four simultaneous independent displays. Review of My Movies for Windows Home Server 2011 2.0 Pre Release 7

We have talked about My Movies in the past, and with the release of My Movies for Windows Home Server 2011 2.0 Pre Release 7 last week, it’s time for our review.

UWHS Review - My Movies for Windows Home Server 2011 2.0 Pre Release 7

What is My Movies for Windows Home Server 2011?

According to the My Movies website:

My Movies for Windows Home Server is a single add-on program for Windows Home Server, providing a set of features around movies and music, making it the perfect solution for adding, identifying and maintaining movie and music data on your Windows Home Server, serving it to different Media Center solutions or music playback devices.

My Movies for Windows Home Server 2011 overall contains the same functionality as My Movies for Windows Home Server, but where My Movies for Windows Home Server shares components with My Movies 3, My Movies for Windows Home Server 2011 shares components with My Movies 4.00. This also means that My Movies for Windows Home Server 2011 contains monitoring functions for TV Series as included in My Movies 4.00, which My Movies for Windows Home Server does not.

As of today, My Movies for Windows Home Server 2011 is still in beta, but according to the website it should be released by the end of May (although today is the 30th May), so expect it sometime in June.

My Movie User Accounts and Points

Here is what Brian says about points:

Some features in My Movies requires that your user account has gained a specific amount of purchased or contribution points. While My Movies is in it’s basics a free product, we would like to reward users who contribute to the software development either by purchasing points, or by participating in building and improving our data service.

If you have installed Windows Home Server 2011, you will notice the workgroup name is WORKGROUP and you can’t change it. Well, Diehard was good enough to post in our forums how to do it and I have expanded on it here.

[box type=”alert” style=”rounded” border=”full”]WARNING: Some people are reporting that once they have changed the WORKGROUP name that the Dashboard will no longer load. The only way to fix this is to perform a server reinstall, so if you not sure DO NOT attempt to change the WORKGROUP name.[/box]

    Final Thoughts

This is a really useful little bit of kit. I have managed to build up a few 2.5” SATA drives over the years and so having an enclosure that is simple to use is great.

The enclosure feels very sturdy and looks very smart.

The price for a pack of two premium enclosures is $44.99. You may be thinking why you would need two, but if you want to duplicate 2.5” drives you will probably need them both.

Although maybe Aleratec should consider selling them singularly as well? And hopefully in the future Aleratec will produce a USB 3.0 version as well.

Review of the StarTech Hard Drive Duplicator and Docking Station

Here we take a look at a USB to IDE or SATA standalone hard drive duplicator and docking station from StarTech – the UNIDUPDOCK.

    UWHS Review - StarTech UNIDUPDOCK

Here is how StarTech describe the UNIDUPDOCK:

The UNIDUPDOCK Universal SATA/IDE Dual Hard Drive Duplicator functions as both a convenient solid state (SSD) or hard drive (HDD) copying/imaging solution or an external SATA/IDE SSD or HDD docking station for 2.5in or 3.5in drives (SATA, SATA II, SATA III).

Providing quick, yet complete hard drive cloning functionality, this universal dock can operate as a standalone HDD duplicator with no connection to a host computer, delivering an exact 1 to 1 clone of the target hard drive including partition and boot sector information, the Host Protected Area (HPA) as well as user data at a copy rate of 72 MB/sec. A built in LCD screen then allows for tracking the duplication progress , as well as reporting errors on the drives.

Supporting both IDE and SATA, this universal duplicator dock enables duplication from SATA to SATA, IDE to SATA or SATA to IDE, and IDE to IDE, as long as the source drive does not exceed the size of the destination drive. Or the docking station can even be used to quickly erase hard drives, for reuse in the future.

Functioning as a universal IDE and SATA HDD docking station, the hard drive duplicator can be connected to a computer through USB with support for simple plug-and-play installation, allowing users to access hard drive contents without having to mount in an external drive enclosure or open the computer case for conventional drive installation.

Contained in a small form factor design that makes it a suitable addition to desktop and laptop operating environments, this hard drive duplicator/external HDD docking station is a versatile storage and hard drive cloning utility that also features a host of other built in utilities that are accessible via a built in menu system.

    • Sector-by-Sector drive duplication, including the HPA
    • Integrated LCD display for duplication progress and options menu
    • Compatible with both SATA (1.5/3.0/6.0 Gbps) and IDE (66/100/133 Mbps) drives
    • Supports 2.5in or 3.5in form factor hard drives (HDD) or solid state drives (SSD)
    • Built-in quick drive erase function
    • Additional independent support functions: drive comparisons, pre-scanning drives and hardware self-diagnosis
    • Manually switchable between Duplicator and Docking Station modes.
    • Built in RAID 0, 1, and BIG functionality
    • Built-in protection against drive short circuiting
    • High-speed USB 2.0 host interface, with support for transfer rates up to 480Mbps
    • Package includes two 40pin to 44pin (3.5in to 2.5in)IDE adapters for mobile hard drive compatibility
