Today Western Digital launched a new drive, the My Book Studio for the Mac, which comes with 3TB storage and is great for Time Machine.

wdfMB_Studio_G2

Western Digital® (NYSE: WDC) today announced that its newest generation of the popular My Book® Studio™ external hard drives are designed for use with Mac® computers and Apple Time Machine. Now available with a 3 TB storage capacity, the new design features a brushed aluminium casing to match the appearance of a Mac computer, and also serves to keep the drive cool while in use. The aluminium exterior, combined with its WD® Caviar® Green™ drives, eliminates the need for an internal fan to reduce drive noise and extend the life of the drive. Although formatted for Mac computers, the My Book Studio external hard drives can also be reformatted for PCs.

The My Book Studio external hard drive includes all the features and benefits that have made it one of the favourites among creative professionals and Mac computer enthusiasts, including its fast and flexible Firewire 800/400 and USB 2.0 interfaces, user-controlled automatic backup software and drive management, password protection and hardware encryption. Shipping in capacities of 1 TB, 2 TB and 3 TB, the My Book Studio drive includes the WD Caviar Green series of internal hard drives with WD GreenPower Technology™.

WD has updated the design of its My Book Studio drive while providing natural cooling features delivered by the new aluminium enclosure,” said Jim Welsh, vice president and general manager of WD’s branded products and consumer electronics groups. “The drive will maintain all the features that are important to the creative community, including high speed Firewire 800 and adding large capacities up to 3 TB.”

Sony BDP-S480 Review

0

A few weeks back, I told you about a wireless USB LAN adaptor and a new Blu Ray player from Sony that came home with me.  Today, the review!

BDPS480

So my wife wanted to update the TV and disk player for our bedroom.  We took home a Sony 32” TV, a Sony 32BX420, and a Blu Ray player to match, the Sony BDP-S480.  In addition, I added a wireless USB adaptor to allow the TV and Blu Ray player to network.

Setup

Setup of the Blu Ray player was easy: plug it in, connect the cables, and install the USB adaptor.  Once the Blu Ray player found the USB adaptor, it asked for the security code to get onto my home network, established an N connection wirelessly, detected a firmware upgrade and asked for my permission to update.  Once updated, it then went out and found all of the DLNA servers that were on the network and switched on.  Setup could not have been easier.  Thank goodness for HDMI.  One cable from the Blu Ray player to the TV for video and sound.  Gotta love it!

Disk Playback

Disk playback has been very good, with dvd’s being upconverted to 1080P and Blu Rays playing well.  All as expected since this is a Blu Ray player.

Streaming Content

I don’t have Netflix, so I concentrated my streaming to on-network servers that had content to share.  The specs for the BDP-S480 claim that MP4 files are supported.  Almost all of my video is in MP4 containers with AAC audio and H.264 video encoding.  None of these files worked with the DLNA client onboard the BDP-S480.  This capability was the main reason that I spent the extra $80 for the USB adaptor; needless to say, I was not happy with this result.  However, recorded TV from my WHS V1 is converted to WMV files.  These all played very well with no issues at all and looked good on the 32” screen.  Not a total waste!

Qriocity

As a result of the PlayStation Network hack, Sony allowed 30 days of access to their service called Qriocity.  I availed myself of this freebie for a bit, and it played music back very well using this Blu Ray player.  I also tried the video playback and it streamed very well after a brief buffer when starting playback.  This is a good service, and I may upgrade and buy it if it works on the PS Vita due out towards the end of the year.

Overall

I really wish that my video files in H.264 and AAC encoding had worked with this DLNA client.  The streaming for Qriocity and for recorded TV shows inside the network worked well, but I was hoping to get my movies this way like I currently can with the PS3.  I’m not sure that paying the extra $80 for the USB adaptor was worth the cost in my case.  However, if you use Netflix or Qriocity or and of the other supported services (Hulu Plus, YouTube, Pandora and some others), then upgrading the networking capabilities of the Blu Ray player may make some sense.  At the end of the day, my wife is happy that she can watch movies and TV on a nice TV in the bedroom, so I’ll consider this one as Mission Accomplished!

DriveHarmony Unprotected Drives and Summary

About a month ago, I installed DriveHarmony from DataCore and created a protected disk.  Today, I am updating you with the results of my unprotected disk testing and giving you a short summary of the DriveHarmony product.  Read on for details!

DataCoreDriveHarmony

As a refresher, I installed WHS2011RC on a VMWare Server installation on my HP HPE390t desktop.  Here is the test system summary again:

  • VMWare Server version 2.0.2;
  • Host machine is a HP HPE390t running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, two cores from my i7-980X and 4GB of memory allocated to the VM;
  • One 400GB IDE drive harvested from my old 2001 era Gateway desktop, loaded into a ThermalTake Silver River DUO Enclosure using USB 2.0; and,
  • One 500GB Seagate drive that was originally in my HP EX475 MSS, loaded into a RocketFish USB 3.0 3.5” SATA Hard Drive Enclosure.

My installation process was as follows:

  • Add the external enclosures to the HPE390t;
  • Allocate these USB drives to the host machine in VMWare Server;
  • Allocate these drives as new virtual drives in the virtual machine that is running WHS2011 RC;
  • Install DriveHarmony;
  • Create an unprotected drive.

Since I added the drives to the VMWare Server instance when I performed my protected drive tests, I’ll just document the process of adding the USB drives to an unprotected pool in this article.  See my last post on DriveHarmony for details on how to add the drives to the VM.

Click on Create Unprotected Drive.

clip_image002

Next, click on drive(s) to add. Click on Create Drive.

clip_image004

clip_image006

clip_image008

36 hours later, the format had not completed so I killed the job. DataCore advised me that USB 2 drives are too slow for acceptable performance of DriveHarmony and advised ensuring that external drives are connected either via ESATA or USB 3.  Once that drive format would have completed, I would have had an unprotected pool created from the available space on both drives.

This concludes my testing of DataCore’s DriveHarmony.

First Look: Toshiba Qosmio F750 3D – World’s First Glasses-free 3D Laptop

0

Toshiba UK today announced the launch of the Qosmio F750 3D – a revolutionary new laptop with the ability to display mesmerizing 3D images without the need for 3D glasses. We get hands-on with it and it actually works very well!

IMG_5089

Now I have to be honest, I’m not a huge fan of 3D. I’ve said it before about TV’s and laptops, I don’t find them that great to watch and I don’t really enjoy the 3D experience. So I wasn’t sure how I would react to yet another 3D laptop. However, this one was different because it was “glasses-free”.

I had seen some glasses-free TV’s at CES and the picture just didn’t look quite right. But with the F750 I was pleasantly surprised.

I found the quality to be excellent and I would have sat that an watched the entire movie if I could have.

The laptop itself has a 15.6” full HD display and it has an HD web camera with eye tracking technology (for more on that, see below).  It also contains a BDXL recorder, so if you wanted, and hand some blank media, you could record up to 128GB on a single blu-ray disc.

Weight wise the laptop comes in at around 2.9 kgs, so not that bad for a 15.6” screen!

The laptop can also convert your existing 2D content into 3D, and I saw this working and it works pretty well. Pure 3D content was certainly better, but the “converted” content was watchable.

Here are some pictures I took of the F750 3D, unfortunately you can’t really see the 3D effects, but there were really good!

IMG_5088IMG_5090IMG_5091IMG_5092IMG_5093IMG_5094

Here is how Toshiba describes the Qosmio F750 3D:

The Qosmio F750 3D can also display a combination of 2D and 3D images on screen at the same time, while a range of powerful, high-performance multimedia features ensures the laptop is perfect for even the most demanding tasks.

3D unplugged

The Qosmio F750 3D is designed for those looking for the ultimate 3D experience. Like the
world’s first glasses-free 3D television – the Toshiba REGZA GL1 – the Qosmio F750 3D
uses a special lenticular 3D screen to give users the freedom to experience all the benefits
of 3D entertainment, without the restrictions of having to wear 3D glasses. Glasses-free 3D
technology adds a truly immersive element, perfect for experiencing 3D in a more natural
and comfortable way, particularly for those that may already require prescription glasses.

The 39.6cm (15.6”) screen also offers Full HD resolution for clear, vivid images, while a
120Hz refresh rate eliminates blur or ghosting with the fast moving images seen in action
films and games.

Glasses-free 3D – how it works

To create a 3D effect without 3D glasses, the left eye needs to see a slightly different
perspective to the right eye. The Qosmio F750 3D’s state-of-the-art lenticular screen sends
two images of slightly differing perspectives individually to the left and right eye, which creates the 3D effect. An integrated webcam also intelligently tracks the user’s eye movements, allowing the Qosmio F750 3D to adjust the 3D effect to match the eye position. The Qosmio F750 3D can also display 2D and 3D content simultaneously – allowing users to browse the internet, for example, in one window and have 3D content playing in another window.

The glasses-free Qosmio F750 3D offers a unique way for businesses, professionals and designers to present 3D content. New product concepts, architecture plans, medical information or educational tools can be viewed with unparalleled realism and greater depth.

The ultimate multimedia machine

Premium features including second generation Intel® Core™ i processors and the latest 3D graphics from NVIDIA® ensure the Qosmio F750 3D handles demanding programs and the latest video games with ease. Integrated stereo speakers designed by audio-specialists Harman Kardon® produce distortion-free, punchy sounds, working with Dolby® Advanced Audio optimisation technology to provide truly a cinematic experience.

3D conversion, 3D connectivity

In addition to integrated Blu-ray™ XL support, the Qosmio F750 3D also features Toshiba’s 2D-to-3D technology – a complex algorithm that takes ordinary 2D DVD content and instantly converts it into 3D. For those wanting to enjoy 3D Blu-ray™ content on a bigger screen with family and friends, the Qosmio F750 3D easily connects to any 3D-ready HDTV via HDMI.
Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) provides users with a fast and reliable wireless internet connection, while USB 3.0 and Bluetooth 3.0 with High Speed support offers incredible transfer speeds between the laptop and peripheral devices.

Premium design

The Qosmio F750 3D is available in a Shiny Red finish, and features a distinctive wavelet pattern across the chassis lid, while a carbon pattern on the inside palm rest gives the laptop a premium finish. Additionally, the EasyControl bar includes seven dedicated buttons, sat above the matt

UWHS Giveaway – Still Time to Win Undelete Professional from Diskeeper

Recently we told you about Emergency Undelete from Diskeeper, which is a program to help you recover deleted files. We have 5 copies of Undelete Professional (which includes Emergency Undelete) to give away, and you still have a few days left to win.

undelete_thumb1

Undelete Professional provides Recovery Bin protection for files on workstations and laptops. Even if your users store most of their files on the server, there’s always some data on the local machines, such as files stored on the desktop or files on roaming laptops. Undelete safeguards that data and allows instant recovery. Administrators using the Undelete Server edition can even connect to those machines running Undelete Professional Edition 2009 Recovery Bins to browse and recover deleted files remotely.

Undelete 2009 Professional Edition Features

New! InvisiTasking Technology
allows for all background operations within Undelete to run with zero overhead. These invisible background tasks include:

  • Automatic purging of the Recovery Bin when it fills up
  • Managing the ‘Common’ Recovery Bin (moving files from one volume to another)
  • Securely overwriting free spaces using the automatic Wipe Free Space feature (more info below)
  • Automatically adjusting the size of the enhanced Recovery Bin (more info below)

Server Client Functionality
Undelete Professional automatically looks for and connects to Undelete Server recovery bins, allowing users to seamlessly recover their own deleted files through a familiar Explorer-like interface. Undelete maintains Windows NTFS security to ensure that users can only access files for which they have permission.

Version Recovery
Undelete automatically captures old versions of Microsoft Office files (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), allowing recovery of earlier, saved-over versions. Version Recovery is integrated with Windows Explorer—simply right-click on a file to recover earlier versions. New! Undelete now supports versioning for new file formats of Microsoft Office 2007 Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.

New! Enhanced Recovery Bin
The Recovery Bin catches all files no matter how they were deleted, allowing instant recovery with just a few clicks of the mouse. The Recovery Bin mimics the directory structure of your disk and includes a powerful search function, making it easy to find and recover files. Undelete 2009 adjusts the Recovery Bin to your volume’s available space, automatically protecting more files when free space is available and less data when it is not.

New! SecureDelete® 2.0
With SecureDelete 2.0 enabled, files that are purged from the recovery bin are overwritten with random data using a methodology developed for the National Security Agency. Version 2.0 of this popular feature introduces the ability to securely delete files immediately (as they are deleted) and overwrite a volume’s free space, which may contain past remnants of confidential data.

Powerful Search Functionality
The Recovery Bin displays information about each deleted file including the file owner, the date and time the file was deleted, and the account used to delete the file.

Network File Protection
With Undelete Desktop Client or Pro Edition installed on network clients, your users can connect to the Undelete Server Edition Recovery Bins installed on the network file servers and restore their own deleted or saved-over MS Office files. NTFS security is fully supported.

Enhanced Emergency Undelete
Undelete can recover files deleted before Undelete was installed, provided they haven’t been overwritten. Undelete 2009 will save you time with support by also recreating the original folder paths, making reorganizing your restored files a snap.

Enhanced Browsing
Save time and recover the right file. Undelete supports previewing protected files in the Recovery Bin to find the exact one you want to restore.

New! Support for Windows Server 2008 and 64 bit operating systems

Full Command Line Support
Leverage Undelete’s robust command line interface with Windows Server Core or your custom scripts to discover and recover your data.

New! No Reboot Needed
Enhanced ‘filter driver’ eliminates the need to reboot your Windows 2008 servers. Installing and using Undelete is now easier than ever.
