A Night at the NVIDIA Arcade

This week I was lucky enough to be invited to spend the evening at the NVIDIA Arcade, an event held in Central London for a few lucky people.

NVIDIA arcade

Rather than having a product announcement, the night at the NVIDIA arcade was more about showcasing NVIDIA technology within it’s partners offerings. For example, tablets from Packard Bell and Dell, laptops from Motorola and Alienware, and even a very cool demo of the new Battlefield 3 game from EA Games!

A great night was had by all there, and I managed to get a few pictures to give you an idea of what was there.

And a very big thank you to NVIDIA for the invite!

Apologies for the lighting on some of the pictures, it was dark in the arcade!

And here is a short video of me using it:

This was the first time I had the opportunity to play on the Liberty tablet, and I quite liked it.

I’m not a big fan of 3D, but I found the 3D Vision PC to be very good quality and it gave the demo game a much more immersive feeling. At least it did when I remembered to switch on the 3D glasses!

Microsoft Introduces the Touch Mouse

This week, UWHS visited the Microsoft 2011 Christmas Showcase event, and one of the things we saw was the new Microsoft Touch Mouse – and believe me, you will want one!

IMG_5175

Back at CES, Microsoft were talking about the Touch Mouse, and since then its been vey quiet, until now that is.

Here is how Microsoft describe the Touch Mouse:

Ready for a whole new way to navigate your PC? Touch Mouse, made exclusively for Windows 7, makes everyday task more fluid and intuitive by using natural gestures instead of clicks. You’ll be more productive, with less effort.

Take a look at the key features below:

features

The Touch Mouse enables you to use your multiple finger gestures to perform certain tasks with ease, such as snapping windows side by side, and because of the BlueTrak technology you can use it on pretty much any surface.

The cost of this little beauty is £69.99, and it will be out later in the year. All I know is that I want one!!!!!

How to Jailbreak Your iPad 2 or other Apple Device

This week saw the release of the jailbreak for iPad 2’s. Even on the first day of release of the iPad 2 people wanted to jailbreak it! Now you can and it’s as easy as visiting a website.

IMG_0091

This new jailbreak was released on Wednesday and within 24 hours over 1 million devices had been jailbroken.

If you are not sure what a jailbreak is then you should probably not try this. What it does is enable you to install apps that have not been approved by Apple.

We do not condone the use of illegal software when jail breaking your device!

So what do you do to jailbreak your iPad 2? Unlike some previous jailbreak solutions, this one is very simple and anyone can do it.

Make sure you are running iOS 4.3.3 – other versions will be supported soon.

Then make sure you have a backup of your iPad 2.

On your iPad 2, open Safari and visit http://www.jailbreakme.com

Tap the FREE button, then tap the INSTALL button.

The whole process should only take a minute.

On your Home screen you will now see a new app called Cydia – tap it.

IMG_0001

You then need to tap on User, Hacker or Developer – for most people User is fine. Then tap Done.

IMG_0002

All the packages and updates will then be downloaded to your iPad 2.

That’s it – you are jailbroken!

IMG_0003

If you want to do know more about Cydia and what you can install and run on your jailbroken iPad 2, just do a search on Google.

It can also jailbreak iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4G and iPod Touch 3G.

WARNING: This should only be attempted if you are sure you want to jailbreak your device and you are happy that it could invalidate your warranty. You can restore your device to its previous state at any time though.

UWHS Giveaway Results – Win Undelete Professional from Diskeeper

Recently we told you about Emergency Undelete from Diskeeper, which is a program to help you recover deleted files. We had 5 copies of Undelete Professional (which includes Emergency Undelete) to give away, and here are the winners.

undelete_thumb1

Undelete Professional provides Recovery Bin protection for files on workstations and laptops. Even if your users store most of their files on the server, there’s always some data on the local machines, such as files stored on the desktop or files on roaming laptops. Undelete safeguards that data and allows instant recovery. Administrators using the Undelete Server edition can even connect to those machines running Undelete Professional Edition 2009 Recovery Bins to browse and recover deleted files remotely.

Undelete 2009 Professional Edition Features

New! InvisiTasking Technology
allows for all background operations within Undelete to run with zero overhead. These invisible background tasks include:

  • Automatic purging of the Recovery Bin when it fills up
  • Managing the ‘Common’ Recovery Bin (moving files from one volume to another)
  • Securely overwriting free spaces using the automatic Wipe Free Space feature (more info below)
  • Automatically adjusting the size of the enhanced Recovery Bin (more info below)

Server Client Functionality
Undelete Professional automatically looks for and connects to Undelete Server recovery bins, allowing users to seamlessly recover their own deleted files through a familiar Explorer-like interface. Undelete maintains Windows NTFS security to ensure that users can only access files for which they have permission.

Version Recovery
Undelete automatically captures old versions of Microsoft Office files (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), allowing recovery of earlier, saved-over versions. Version Recovery is integrated with Windows Explorer—simply right-click on a file to recover earlier versions. New! Undelete now supports versioning for new file formats of Microsoft Office 2007 Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.

New! Enhanced Recovery Bin
The Recovery Bin catches all files no matter how they were deleted, allowing instant recovery with just a few clicks of the mouse. The Recovery Bin mimics the directory structure of your disk and includes a powerful search function, making it easy to find and recover files. Undelete 2009 adjusts the Recovery Bin to your volume’s available space, automatically protecting more files when free space is available and less data when it is not.

New! SecureDelete® 2.0
With SecureDelete 2.0 enabled, files that are purged from the recovery bin are overwritten with random data using a methodology developed for the National Security Agency. Version 2.0 of this popular feature introduces the ability to securely delete files immediately (as they are deleted) and overwrite a volume’s free space, which may contain past remnants of confidential data.

Powerful Search Functionality
The Recovery Bin displays information about each deleted file including the file owner, the date and time the file was deleted, and the account used to delete the file.

Network File Protection
With Undelete Desktop Client or Pro Edition installed on network clients, your users can connect to the Undelete Server Edition Recovery Bins installed on the network file servers and restore their own deleted or saved-over MS Office files. NTFS security is fully supported.

Enhanced Emergency Undelete
Undelete can recover files deleted before Undelete was installed, provided they haven’t been overwritten. Undelete 2009 will save you time with support by also recreating the original folder paths, making reorganizing your restored files a snap.

Enhanced Browsing
Save time and recover the right file. Undelete supports previewing protected files in the Recovery Bin to find the exact one you want to restore.

New! Support for Windows Server 2008 and 64 bit operating systems

Full Command Line Support
Leverage Undelete’s robust command line interface with Windows Server Core or your custom scripts to discover and recover your data.

New! No Reboot Needed
Enhanced ‘filter driver’ eliminates the need to reboot your Windows 2008 servers. Installing and using Undelete is now easier than ever.

Anyway, the winners are…….

To win we asked you to just subscribe to our daily newsletter and we would pick 5 winners at random. If you already subscribed to the newsletter then you were automatically entered! We told you there would be benefits to subscribing Smile

DVBLogic Release DVBLink TVSource and Home Server v4 Betas

Well, it’s been a long time coming, but DVBLogic have just released the betas for DVBLink TVSource and Home Server v4 products. Get them now before they release an update!

dvb

Well I know that I am eager to play around with it, and I am sure we will be discussing it at length on next week’s Digital Lifestyle podcast. And I think the upgrade fee they are proposing is very reasonable as well.

Here is what the DVBLogic guys have said:

DVBLink TVSource and Home Server v4 products are released for public beta!
We are extremely happy and proud to announce that DVBLink TVSource and Home Server products have reached public beta stage.

There are a lot of new things and improvements comparing to the v3.x. Some features are the same but done/accessed in a different way.

The following presentation summarizes the most important of them:
http://www.dvblogic.com/download/Trunk/DVBLink_v4.pdf

Now some practical things to know before you start installing v4 beta:

– You must uninstall existing DVBLink software from the machine where v4 will be installed. Do not forget to make backup – v4 will pick up (most of) DVBLink v3 settings.
– MediaCenter integration is now only available for Win7 (e.g. no Vista support anymore)
– Currently only TVSource and DVBLink Home Server are available for beta. The DVBLink for IPTV and DVBLink for Dreambox will be added soon. DVBLink Connect! Server is expected to be available for beta in about 4-5 weeks. This means that if you are using IPTV or Dreambox sources or need Internet/IPhone connectivity functionality, please wait for the next beta’s.
– This first beta has only 4 virtual tuners available for MediaCenter integration (more tuners will be added later). If you are using more than 4 stream sources (for example 5 or more tuners) do not install this beta as you will be limited to 4 tuners only.
– DVBLink Server configuration page can be accessed from web browser (IE may have some tables incorrectly shown). Enter address of the PC and port 39876 into address bar – for example http://localhost:39876
– Most of the layout features of web configurator should be familiar to v3 users
– At the moment there is no way back from “Sources and Channels” part of configurator to its main landing page. If you need to go back just enter http://localhost:39876 again in the browser
– We have seen certain instability in web configuration request handling. We are looking into it. For the time being if you have done some action in the configuration web page and browser says that it is waiting for the server and it takes a long time (say more than 15 seconds), just hit Escape and try operation again. If there is a wait dialog – just go to the main page at http://localhost:39876 and navigate to where you have been before.
– Channel preview is available on channel selection tab. Move mouse over the channels in the left tree and you will see a pop-up play button. Press it to start preview. Once preview is started browser will download an m3u file that you can open with, say, VLC. Preview will be automatically stopped after 1 minute. Please note that MediaPlayer cannot play transport stream sent over UDP and thus cannot be used for preview.
– When doing TV Setup in MediaCenter
– Configure all 4 DVBLink tuners even if you have only one or two physical tuners
– In the course of installation MediaCenter will try to download and intall PlayReady and fail. It will ask you whether to try again. Say “No” and proceed.
– Use Synchronize channels button in DVBLink addin to synchronize channels as usual. Synchronization will be started automatically on the MediaCenter startup and will be repeated every 12 hours.
– We have seen that channel scanning in MediaCenter during TV Setup may hang – if this is the case, press cancel button and proceed.
– If using EPG mapping to Microsoft Guide Listings you may need to select “Get latest Guide listings” to start EPG population process
– Location for xmltv files is not selectable anymore – they should be put into “xmltv” folder of DVBLink installation root
– If source is deleted its channels will stay in MediaCenter until its virtual tuner is reused for another source. We know that this is important issue and we look into it to solve as soon as possible.
– Colors of the sources in the configuration web page might be the same and they are not editable yet.
– For TVSource the following functionality is not implemented yet:
– No EPG scan configuration tab exists yet although the scan itself is working with the default settings. Also if you are restoring from backup the scan settings will be automatically picked up.
– No custom diseqc commands dialog yet
– No tuner settings dialog yet
– No channel tree overview tab yet
– Channel preview is running from under the service now, so you need to use plugin monitors (e.g. no task bar icons)

I think that I have definitely forgotten to mention something, but we will find it out soon.

As mentioned before v4 will be paid upgrade for v3 and v2 users. Upgrade will be performed per user – e.g. single flat fee of 10 euro for all DVBLink products v3/v2 that he or she has bought. Customers, who have bought DVBLink v3 products between 1 July 2011 and v4 release date, will be upgraded for free.

DVBLink TVSource and Home Server v4 beta 1 can be downloaded here:
http://www.dvblogic.com/download/Trunk/ … rce_b1.zip
http://www.dvblogic.com/download/Trunk/ … ver_b1.zip

Install DVBLink Server first, followed by TVSource and Home Server installation. DVBLink Network Client should be installed on a client PC where networked Mediacenter runs.

Enjoy and report your findings, comments and impressions here!

So, are you going to test it? Let us know what you think.

Sky Go is well…. Go!

Sky have now officially launched their Sky Go service, which enables you to watch TV channels live on your computer, just like you would on your Sky box.

Enjoy watching up to 32 live channels with Sky Go on your laptop, including Sky Sports, Sky Movies, Sky Atlantic and much more ready to watch now.

Unfortunately it’s not available yet for the Apple iPad or iPhone – they say that’s coming soon, so watch this space.

PerfectDisk 12 SP1 Coming Next Week

Raxco have just announced via their blog that SP1 (service pack 1) for their PerfectDisk 12 product will be released next week.

PerfectDisk-12-for-WHS-install-2_thu

PerfectDisk 12 has only been out a month, so that’s pretty quick to get a service pack out.

More news next week when its released.

Here is what they posted:

PerfectDisk 12 Introduced extensive changes and enhancements. As always with new versions, the focus was on the core issue of defragmentation and optimization. And also, as we have sometimes done in the past, we introduced new functionality that, while not directly involving disk defragmentation, is related to drive performance and/or overall drive health.

The new OptiWrite fragmentation prevention technology involved major changes to the engine that also met the goal of minimizing free space fragmentation in this new process, which no other solution provides. Other engine changes were made to improve fragmentation speed, improve the boot time defrag process, and more.

PerfectDisk continues to serve a wide range of users, from millions of home consumers and home offices, to small business, to large enterprises that include some of the largest multi-national corporations in the world. As the IT, performance and storage markets undergo continuing evolution, we strive to meet the ongoing needs of those that desire and require defragmentation and optimization to achieve and maintain the best possible drive and system performance. There is an ever-growing set of users that have needs above and beyond the core defragmentation of the NTFS file system. Thus, our specialized solutions for vSphere, Hyper-V, Exchange, Windows Home Server, et al.

Many of our home users (and some of our business users too) simply install PerfectDisk, set it up once, and never worry about it or think about it again. Others do more with it and the various tools and options available. They know that PerfectDisk can provide more information and flexibility to perform and report on their drives and files. With this in mind and at the request of numerous users over the years, we provided S.M.A.R.T. monitoring capabilities with PerfectDisk 12 that we have had very positive feedback on. Many users told us “it’s about time!” There is also a subset of users who, as mentioned earlier, have no interest in this type of extra capability. We understand this, and for them, PerfectDisk can still simply do its main mission – boost drive and system performance.

And there are also users who think the S.M.A.R.T. data is a great idea, but don’t appreciate (rightly so), the outrageously high temperatures they see on their PerfectDisk 12 S.M.A.R.T. tab. These high temperature listings were due to PerfectDisk not recognizing the drive model and trying to apply an incorrect set of rules to interpret the S.M.A.R.T. data. For these models, we goofed on how we acted on the data.

With PerfectDisk 12 Service Pack 1, PerfectDisk will only provide S.M.A.R.T. data for drives and models it recognizes. We are going to be adding more drives and models over time, in later service packs, so that only accurate information will be provided. This will eliminate the high temperature displays. However, for those models we have not yet incorporated into the PerfectDisk engine, accurate temperatures will still not be displayed; but erroneous information will not be displayed either.

Going forward, we are committed to continuing to provide the best defrag and optimization tool for PCs and servers in both physical and virtual environments. At the same time, we will also look to offer additional innovative tools for those users that desire them. As we evolve, you can also look for us to differentiate our product line so that it is easier for users to choose and use the offerings that make the most sense for them, with the ability to bypass features that are not important to them.

PerfectDisk 12 Service Pack 1 arrives next week. More changes and improvements to PerfectDisk 12 are in the works.

Forward with Ford – Focus Target Challenge

Two weeks when was visiting Ford, we were let loose on a number of different challenges. One of them, the Focus Target Challenge saw us driving around a track through targets. Here is the video that Ford just sent.

Here is how Ford described the challenge:

Have fun and feel the excitement while driving the all-new 2012 Ford Focus around the Target Challenge Course. Your goal is to precisely navigate the course while trying to accumulate as many points as you can. Laser targets placed around the track will reward you for your good aim and smooth cornering. Driving in a spirited fashion and with a good line may net you top score on the day. Oh yeah, did we mention you’ll be filmed too!

So it was a lot of fun – the guitar sounds were there to show you how well you were doing!

Enjoy!

Not exactly the Stig!

Windows Home Server 2011 World Wide Pricing Slashed

The world-wide pricing for Windows Home Server 2011 OEM software has been slashed. If you want to build your own WHS 2011 box there has never been a better time.

This is not a special offer or a limited time deal – this is the new pricing for Windows Home Server 2011.

For example, one UK website are now showing WHS 2011 for £42.49 including VAT.

whs pricing

Amazon are already showing sellers with the reduced price, but sites like Newegg.com are still showing the old price. I think that is just a matter time before they drop theirs.

Personally I am not sure whether to be happy about the price drop, or concerned about it. WHS 2011 has only been out a couple of months, we haven’t really seen many OEMs releasing servers, certainly nothing from the “big boys”.

So this will either stimulate the market, or does it begin to spell the beginning of the end of WHS 2011?

What do you think?
