logo_mslogo-h_web

Microsoft released a rollup release for Windows Home Server 2011 today.  Here is the partial changelog announcement:

Feature that is included in this update

You can now configure the Launchpad to start in the minimized state by selecting the “Always minimize the Launchpad at start” check box.

Major issues that are resolved by this update
Issue 1

When you try to connect a Windows 8-based client computer to Windows Home Server 2011, you receive an “Unexpected Error” message.

Issue 2

On a computer that is running Windows 8 and that has Internet Explorer 10 installed, thumbnails for Remote Web Access (RWA) media files and folders are not displayed correctly. Specifically, the thumbnails are displayed as black squares.

Issue 3

Assume that you connect a Windows 8-based client computer to a Windows Home Server 2011-based server, and then set the client backup property to “Automatically wake this computer up from sleep or hibernation to run a scheduled backup.” In this situation, the backup is not successful if the client computer is asleep or in hibernation.

Issue 4

You receive “Computer Monitoring Errors” alerts every 30 minutes. The following “Computer Monitoring Errors” alerts are fixed in this update rollup:

  • Alerts that are triggered by client synchronization time-out
  • Alerts that are triggered by stale computer records that belong to client computers that were removed
  • Alerts that occur when the router manufacturer information is not retrieved
  • Alerts that occur when an RWA Domain socket connection is aborted

In addition, the description of alerts will include the name of the failed component, to improve troubleshooting.

Issue 5

You receive the following incorrect warning alert when UPnP is not available on the router:

The router is not configured correctly for Anywhere Access. You must configure the router to remotely access the network

Issue 6

Watson crashes because of an error in Wssbackup.exe. When this issue occurs, client backup may not work correctly, and you may receive alerts or error messages.

Issue 7

Performance improvements are made to Client File and Folder Restore.

Issue 8

When you try to download multiple files from RWA on a single request, the operation fails.

Issue 9

Some health alerts do not work in Windows 8. For example, the “The Network Firewall is turned off” and “Virus protection is turned off, not installed, or not up-to-date” alerts do not work.

Known issues

Issue 1
If you have installed Update Rollup 3 Beta, you must uninstall it (for more information about how to do this, go to the “How to uninstall Update Rollup 3 Beta” section).

Issue 2
Client computers may restart after you apply Update Rollup 3. Before this restart happens, some functionality may not work.

This looks like a pretty decent release, so if you are running WHS 2011, go ahead and update the software.

Square Enix introduces new CONTRACTS online mode for Hitman: Absolution

0

Today at Gamescom, Square Enix introduced an all new online mode for Hitman: Absolution called CONTRACTS and it is very cool!

HA_Contracts_Safe_Bomb

CONTRACTS is a new online mode which allows gamers to create and share their own custom hit challenges within the HITMAN: ABSOLUTION game. Choose a level, targets, weapons and then set your rules for completing your  contract based on time, style and witnesses. There are no clumsy editors or complicated mechanics to learn; in CONTRACTS you simply play to create, and as CONTRACTS is an asynchronous mode, you can compete against friends at any time, regardless of whether they are online. HITMAN: ABSOLUTION will also ship with many pre-set CONTRACTS, each designed by the very best assassins at IO Interactive.

“CONTRACTS was inspired by our loyal and extremely creative fans, many of whom are still finding new and amazing ways of taking out targets in previous Hitman games,” said Christian Elverdam, gameplay director for HITMAN: ABSOLUTION. “CONTRACTS mode finally delivers a way for Hitman players to fully realize both their creativity and competitive nature. Whether they’re fighting to shave off a split second from their time or combining elements and timing events to create unprecedented accidental deaths, gamers can now challenge and inspire each another with an endless variety of user-generated contracts.”

Upon accepting and successfully completing a contract, players will be rewarded in contract dollars with the amount depending upon how well they performed. In order to create more elaborate and creative setups, the player can choose from a vast arsenal of weapons, disguises, upgrades, and techniques; all of which can be unlocked by either playing through the story mode of HITMAN: ABSOLUTION or by spending those hard-earned contract dollars.

Having seen a behind closed doors demo of CONTRACTS mode this afternoon at Gamescom I was really impressed. The ability to not only create your own contracts but being able to play contracts that other people have created and then challenge your friends really adds to what already looks like a spectacular game.

Here are some more screenshots to keep you going:

PlayStation Plus Coming to PS Vita, Storage Space Increased

0

Sony continues to make news from Gamescom in Koln today, now announcing that the PlayStation Plus service is coming to the Vita and storage space for game saves is being increased.  Read on for details.

PSN Plus Cloud Storge Logo

Sony is bringing PlayStation Plus to the PS Vita and is increasing your storage space for game saves to 1GB from 150MB.  Great news!  Here are some of the posted details:

Since its inception, PlayStation Plus has delivered a strong value to PlayStation gamers. We’ve been keeping our ears to the ground and asking Plus members “What would you like to see added to PlayStation Plus?”

Today, I’m happy to share the news that was announced at Gamescom: PlayStation Plus is coming to PS Vita this year, and Online Game Saves are getting a giant upgrade in September.

We will also deliver PlayStation Plus, which is currently available for PS3 users, to PS Vita users this year. By purchasing a membership to PlayStation Plus, PS Vita users will be able to enjoy various services which will become available exclusively for members.

Additionally, we’re upgrading Online Game Save Storage. Previously, Online Game Saves offered up to 150MB of game save data storage in the cloud for PlayStation 3. With this update, Plus members will get to store up to 1GB of game save data. This means you’ll never have to worry about running out of space for your game save files!

This is really good news.  Here’s hoping that they roll out some of the fun features, like beta games, to the PS Vita as well!

PS Vita Update Coming in August; Adds PSone Classics

3

The PlayStation Vita is getting an updated firmware and this release will also add the ability to play PSone Classics games among other things.  Read on for details.

PS%20VITA

Sony announced today an upcoming firmware release that adds PSone Classics to the games that the Vita can play, along with some other nice updates.  Version 1.80 is due out in late August…here are some parts of the blog post:

One of the key announcements coming out of Gamescom today is that the next PS Vita System Software Update (v1.80) is coming your way late August, and will add support for playing PSone Classics on your PlayStation Vita. I know a lot of you have been looking forward to playing original PlayStation titles on the go.

In addition, you will be able to make various setting changes while games are running and take screenshots of your gameplay.
*It might not be possible to take screenshots in some applications, or in some parts of applications.

Listed below are a few other new features that will be added with the 1.80 update:

Cross Controller

The new Cross-Controller feature will allow you to use PS Vita as a controller to play compatible games on PS3, such as LittleBigPlanet 2. This feature lets you take advantage of PS Vita’s rich features including the touch screen, rear touch pad, six-axis motion sensing system, and cameras.

To access the cross controller feature you need to launch the Remote Play application and then click on the Cross-Controller icon.

Controls

As many of you have requested, you will now have the option to control the home screen and some features of applications such as Videos and Music with the buttons on the PS Vita system.

Music

Playlists will be supported in Music. You will be able to transfer iTunes (10.6.3 or later), M3U, and M3U8 playlists from a PS3 or a PC using Content Manager.

Web Browser

Rear touch pad operation will be supported by the browser, allowing you to scroll through and zoom out of pages without obscuring the screen.

Video

The following controls have been added to Videos:

  • Playback speed control
  • Repeat play
Photos

Viewing photos in MPO format will now be supported, with the ability to transfer MPO files from PS3™ and PC using Content Manager.
* 3D and multi-angle viewing are NOT supported.

Group Messaging

Along with some new layout enhancements, you will be able to take photos to add as attachments when writing Group Messages.

Maps

The Maps feature has been improved by adding a button on the top screen to switch between “Search for Location” and “Search for Directions.” You can also touch and hold a location on the map and place a user flag.

“near”

“near” will be able to gather the information of surrounding Wi-Fi access points without internet connection and update the location data based on it later. You can get location data within the area covered by Wi-Fi location services.

I look forward to the ability to synch playlists from iTunes, as well as the Cross Controller application.  Look for the system update late in August.

Microsoft Announces SkyDrive for Android App, Reminds Us About Recent Changes

Microsoft published a blog post today that summarized changes made to SkyDrive, and also announced an official SkyDrive for Android app.  Read on for details.

SkyDrive-for-Android_5C5CEC34

Microsoft published a blog post today updating us on SkyDrive.  Outlook.com now has 10 million users, and SkyDrive.Com has now been launched.  In addition, an Android SkyDrive app is on the way.  Here are the main points of the blog post:

Over the past months, we’ve shared our approach to building versatile personal cloud storage that can scale to a billion people. Today, we’re excited to announce the next step towards that vision, and how this brings the SkyDrive desktop apps out of preview:

  • SkyDrive.com – New, modern design for desktop and tablet browsers with instant search, contextual toolbar, thumbnail multi-select, drag-and-drop organization, and HTML5 sorting
  • SkyDrive for Windows desktop & OS X Faster uploads for people around the world and tons of bug and performance improvements under the hood
  • SkyDrive for Android – A new app that lets you access, upload and share from Android phones
  • SkyDrive for developers – Apps built using our SkyDrive API can now store or access any type of file in a person’s SkyDrive, plus there’s a new, easy-to-use file picker API for websites (similar to our file picker for Windows 8 apps)

With these updates and continued improvements to our back-end infrastructure, we’re excited to leave preview and unlock new possibilities for a billion customers with the upcoming releases of Windows 8, the new Office, and tons of devices and apps that connect to SkyDrive.

SkyDrive for developers

It’s been almost a year since we first announced the revamped developer platform for working with SkyDrive which made it easier to integrate SkyDrive into mobile and web apps. Since then we’ve gotten consistent feedback on two key places where we could improve our developer story.

  1. No more file restrictions and full control over photo upload resolution
There are no longer any restrictions on the types of files that your application uploads to SkyDrive. Additionally, you can now upload images in their full resolution.
  2. Open and Save pickers
Our API now includes a SkyDrive file picker for opening and saving files to SkyDrive by adding a few lines of JavaScript to any website.

With these changes we’ve addressed a few of the top items of feedback from our developer community and can’t wait to see the interesting innovations that our customers will get to enjoy, now that this functionality is available. We’ll cover these changes in more detail in a follow-up blog post.

Check out the full blog post here, and if you are using an Android device, watch out for the announcement that the SkyDrive app is available.  I use the iPad app for SkyDrive pretty heavily, and would love this on an Android tablet.

Ford Dealers Now Using SHOWCASE App and Apple iPad to Improve Customer Purchase Experience

0

For most people, buying a new car, truck or SUV is the second-biggest purchase they make after their home, so ensuring the process is as easy and stress-free as possible is critical to customer satisfaction. The new SHOWCASE app being used by Ford sales associates with the Apple iPad is helping dealers find just the right car for their customers faster than ever.

Ford-Motor1

To view the new SHOWCASE app in action, check out the video below:

http://youtu.be/fmg1FJh5Lo8

“Waiting for the sales consultant to check the inventory or wandering the aisles of a car lot in search of just the right combination of colors and options can be a tedious and time-consuming process,” says Michelle Moody, Cross Vehicle Marketing manager for Ford. “If the weather is bad or the sun has gone down early in the winter months, venturing outside is even less appealing.

“In early 2011 we decided to take advantage of the portable technology that became available with the launch of the iPad to facilitate an improved purchase experience for our customers,” Moody says.

In recent years customers have become accustomed to using various shopping tools to configure and compare vehicles on the Ford.com website. The new SHOWCASE app links this experience to the showroom, giving sales associates new technology to determine what features a customer wants and to immediately check inventory to see which vehicles in stock most closely match those needs.

“We had tried using kiosks in the showroom to enable customers to check out our vehicles and features, but many customers were not as comfortable using these on their own,” Moody says.

Using the new SHOWCASE app running on an iPad, the salesperson can sit with the customer to pick out the model that person wants, then filter the selection based on trim level, colors, equipment and price. The app then displays all the vehicles in stock that match the customer’s criteria including a list of all the equipment installed on each vehicle.

“I have to say it has never been easier finding the right vehicle,” said Maxx Springman, a customer who recently bought a new Escape from All-American Ford in Old Bridge, N.J. “I can’t believe we were able to build the exact Escape I was looking for right there at the salesman’s desk.

“Then we actually found the right one on the lot without having to spend an hour walking around outside looking at different window stickers like I’ve done in the past. Thank goodness, too, because it was, like, 110 degrees out and ready to pour!”

The SHOWCASE app provides instant access to more information including videos about the available features, such technology as SYNC® and MyFord® Touch, as well as driver assist features like adaptive cruise control and active park assist. Using the app, the salesperson can quickly demonstrate features like collision warning with brake support, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) or Lane-Keeping System, which may not be easy to show off during a test drive.

If the customer needs time to consider or discuss the purchase with his or her significant other, the sales associate can email the information on the specific vehicles in stock directly to the customer.

“Customers don’t like to wait while the salesperson walks away to check inventory,” says Rich Savino, owner of All-American Ford, a participant in the pilot program. “The SHOWCASE app helps to create a more intimate experience; it lets customers see what is available instantly and make adjustments if they don’t find what they are looking for.”

The SHOWCASE app was developed by Ford and user interface design specialists Razorfish over a period of several months in 2011. A pilot group of 14 Ford dealers participated in defining the app and then testing it beginning in November 2011. Open registration for all Ford dealers began on Aug. 1, 2012 and nearly 200 dealers have already signed up to use the new app.

Recently, the Build and Price section of Ford.com was enhanced to give customers the ability to save their builds. Ford is also working on a number of future enhancements for the Showcase app including the ability for the sales associate to retrieve custom builds previously saved by the customer and then automatically search inventory to find vehicles that match the customer’s needs.

The SHOWCASE app is just the latest step in Ford’s efforts to improve the customer experience before, during and after the purchase of a new vehicle.

Madden NFL 13 Demo Due Out for PS Vita Tomorrow

Sony announced on the PlayStation blog today that Madden NFL 13 has a PS Vita demo scheduled to drop on Tuesday August 14th.  Read on for details.

psv-game-6104-packfront

Sony announced the availability of a demo of the new version of the venerable Madden NFL franchise for the PS Vita.  On Tuesday, August 14th, you’ll be able to download a playable demo with last year’s Super Bowl participants and try your hand with the new features added just for Vita users.  Here is part of the blog post:

The game is launching on August 28th, but I wanted to let you know how you can get your hands on the action early with the demo, starting August 14th. When designing Madden for PS Vita, the Dev Team set the goal of making the most complete Madden handheld experience to date, and without a doubt I feel we delivered it. Madden NFL 13 is visually stunning on PS Vita — seeing all the superstars decked out in their brand new NFL uniforms in HD on that gorgeous OLED screen really gets you excited for football season to start. The game is built from the Gen 3 engine, so if you are familiar with PlayStation 3, you will feel right at home here.

The game drops on August 28th, but in the meantime, try out the demo and see if you like the new control options.  Here is a brief rundown on the game features:

  • Only on Vita—The Vita’s front and rear touch screens provide an unprecedented amount of control and feature depth, from drawing hot routes to swatting passes and stripping the ball. Use the SixAxis Motion System to keep a runner in-bounds when tip-toeing down the sideline by tilting the Vita left or right to keep the player balanced.
  • All-New Commentary—Every game has the feel of a nationally televised broadcast with CBS Sports commentators Jim Nantz and Phil Simms calling the action from the booth.
  • Authentic Franchise Mode—Build the next great dynasty with the most robust Franchise Mode ever created on a handheld device includes expanded rosters, pre-season cut days, an updated rookie scouting system, a free-agent bidding system, player roles, in-season hot and cold streaks, and much more.
  • Become a Superstar—Create an NFL Superstar and guide his career from pre-draft workout all the way to the Hall of Fame. Control the growth of your superstar with an updated progression system that allows you to earn skill points during practice and in games. Brand new position-specific coordinator audio coaches your growth on-field as an NFL player.
  • Take Your Game Online—Battle opponents head-to-head over Wi-Fi or 3G, working your way up the leaderboards with every victory.

Go ahead and check it out tomorrow!  I know I will!

Bigpoint’s Battlestar Galactica Online Gains Power from Allegorithmic’s Substance

0

Bigpoint and Allegorithmic, the leading firm in texturing technology, recenly announced that Bigpoint’s free-to-play, browser-based title, Battlestar Galactica Online (BSGO) is the most successful game built atop the Unity 3D platform to incorporate Allegorithmic Substance technology.

Rhino gold bckgrd

Utilizing Unity and Substance products, Bigpoint greatly enhances user experiences by creating in-game art that is optimized for each player’s individual computer.

“Bigpoint is constantly striving to push the boundaries of browser game development and we’re very pleased with the benefits BSGO has gained with the addition of Allegorithmic’s sophisticated technology,” said Matt Norton, Studio Director, Bigpoint Inc. “Substance enables us to produce high-quality art without creating sizing issues. Since we can easily scale assets down from megabytes to kilobytes, we can use higher-res textures all while still minimizing download times for players in the game.”

Since its launch in 2011, Battlestar Galactica Online has become the most popular Unity-based game to adopt Substance. In one year, BSGO enlisted more than 10 million registered pilots to the tactical space combat massively multiplayer online game, and adds 25,000 new registrations per day. Bigpoint has created a number of customizable character skins with dynamic levels of detail; the first batch of Human and Cylon ship paints built with Substance were released in early 2012. More recently, a limited-edition collection of golden ship skins were produced for the in-game Festival of Kobol celebration (running through Aug. 12).

“Working with Bigpoint and the talented BSGO development team has been incredibly rewarding,” said Alexis Khouri, VP Strategy & Sales, Allegorithmic. “BSGO is one of the most impressive browser-based titles ever launched, and we are both excited and proud to know that Substance technology adds to this game’s power.”

Attendees at the upcoming Unite 2012 developer conference in Amsterdam (Aug. 22-25) will have the opportunity to learn more about Substance in two scheduled program sessions: “Faster, Better and Lighter Textures with Substance Designer 3 (R.I.P. Photoshop)”on Tuesday, Aug. 21 and “How to Benefit From Unity’s Substance Integration Without Paying a Dime” on Thursday, Aug. 23. Among other user cases, Allegorithmic will demonstrate how Battlestar Galactica Online became the biggest Unity-based title to be released with Substance. Unity Technologies natively supports its clients with free access to Allegorithmic’s Substance runtime engine.

The latest version of Substance Designer 3.0, the Texturing Workshop, will be available this summer. Substance Designer 3 will include a new major batching and powerful painting system with the ability to create smart filters and minimize production time. Pre-orders can be taken at: http://www.allegorithmic.com/products/substance-designer-3

Battlestar Galactica Online can be accessed for free on all web browsers. For more information about BSGO, visit: http://battlestar-galactica.bigpoint.com/.
