NVIDIA Release GeForce 310.64 Beta Drivers with updates for Far Cry 3

NVIDIA have released a GeForce 310.64 beta driver for it’s graphics cards.

GeForce-Logo_thumb_thumb_thumb

This is what NVIDIA have posted on their blog:

The new GeForce 310.64 beta drivers are now available to download. Featuring the same performance boosts as the 310.54 and 310.61 beta drivers, today’s release gets your system ready for Far Cry 3, which launches in Europe tomorrow, and next Tuesday in North America.

In addition to maximizing compatibility in the new, performance-intensive first-person shooter, the 310.64 beta drivers improve performance by up to 37.6% in the configurations we’ve tested. Furthermore, the previously-released SLI profile is also included, allowing multi-GPU users to maximize performance the moment the game launches.

Using the most popular gaming resolution, 1920×1080, we maxed out Far Cry 3’s many graphics options, selected SSAO Ambient Occlusion (an excellent balance between performance and fidelity), set the game’s version of Transparency Supersampling to “Standard”, and enabled 8xMSAA to eliminate those pesky jaggies. As you can see below, today’s 310.64 beta driver boosted performance significantly, helping the GTX 670 and GTX 680 achieve playable frame rates at this demanding detail level. Please note that we expect improvements of varying degrees to be seen on any system utilizing a GeForce GTX 400, 500, or 600 series GPU, but due to time constraints we were unable to run comprehensive, in-depth tests ahead of the driver’s release.

With regards to the issues you’ve experienced in games such as Battlefield 3 and Assassin’s Creed III, we are actively working to fix them and hope to get most resolved for our upcoming WHQL driver.

Download Issue 8 of The MagPi Digital Magazine for lovers of the Raspberry Pi

If you have, or are interested in the Raspberry Pi, then you might want to download the new issue of The MagPi digital magazine.

MagPi8

This is how the Raspberry Pi guys describe the magazine:

The MagPi, a free online magazine dedicated to the Raspberry Pi, whose first issue was released a few days ago, is a perfect example of that. It’s been put together entirely by volunteers, guided by Ash Stone, Jason “Jaseman” Davies, Meltwater and other names you may recognise from the forums and comments on this site. I was broadly aware they were up to something, but I was amazed at the scope of what they sent me to look at earlier in the week, and I’ve been really, really impressed by the first issue. There are Debian and Puppy guides, articles on computing history, ideas for robotics projects, tutorials in Scratch and Python (with code you can type in yourself, just like in the good old days), features about the Raspberry Pi itself, and other goodies to dig into. I really can’t recommend it enough, and if you haven’t been lucky enough to get to the head of the queue, you don’t need a Raspberry Pi to find it useful (you might actually find the magazine good preparation before yours arrives).

It is a really interesting read – so go download it today, and let us know what you think!

The Final Hours of Tomb Raider Episode 3: The Sound of Survival

SQUARE ENIX and Crystal Dynamics yesterday announced that Jason Graves, an award winning composer with an outstanding pedigree across film, television and gaming is penning the original score for TOMB RAIDER.

Graves’ involvement is revealed in the third episode of The Final Hours of Tomb Raider. In The Sound of Survival, host Zachary Levi escorts viewers to the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) London headquarters, and speaks to Graves about his role in the reboot of the iconic Tomb Raider franchise (BAFTA has previously recognized Graves’ work for Original Score and Use of Audio in Dead Space).

The composer reveals his vision for the game’s soundscape and speaks about infusing atmosphere, emotion and authenticity into Lara’s origins story through his musical score – and illustrates his search to find the perfect sound for the game, through his collaboration with sculptor, Matt McConnell who created a bespoke and wholly original instrument to aid Graves in bringing his unique sound to Tomb Raider.

In keeping with the tradition of Geoff Keighley’s signature THE FINAL HOURS series, viewers can gain a deeper, behind-the-scenes look at what Graves has to say by checking out this episode:

I am a huge fan of the new Tomb Raider game, and all I can say is keep checking out CDW over the coming weeks for lots of Tomb Raider goodness.

Halo 4 Crimson Map Pack details and pictures

1

343 Industries announced today the Halo 4 Crimson Map Pack will be available for download starting 10th December, featuring three new environments for you to wage battle on Xbox LIVE with friends.

harvest_action_1

Descriptions of the three maps are as follows:

· Wreckage: Wreckage is the manifestation of the chaos of war. A medium-sized, asymmetrical map great for accommodating a wide range of objective-based game modes including King of the Hill and Capture the Flag. It is a ravaged environment of crashed debris, where the surrounding destruction creates complex paths perfect for throwing off your opponents, or testing the limits of your Warthog. This devastated landscape provides plenty of cover, with tons of nooks and crannies at your disposal while fighting for your turn to become King. Wreckage supports up to 16 players in Infinity Slayer and up to 12 players in a variety of other modes, including Capture the Flag, King of the Hill and Oddball.

· Harvest: Harvest is a canon concept brought to life – the doomed agricultural planet where humans first made contact with the Covenant. A small to mid-size map, Harvest is ideal for Capture the Flag. Here, you’ll need to get creative to effectively use light vehicles which are limited to the exterior pathways and can’t get into the bases, making this map perfect for infantry firefights and face-to-face skirmishes. Snipers will also feel right at home; long sightlines are broken up by great cover and hiding spots. Harvest allows up to 12 players to face off in Capture the Flag, Infinity Slayer, King of the Hill, SWAT and Slayer Pro.

harvest_env_2 harvest_env_3shatter_action_1 shatter_action_2

· Shatter:  Shatter is themed around natural crystalline surfaces and the huge UNSC factories mining them. This large, symmetrical map is a playground for the Warthog and Mantis – its open pathways make it easy to get around, whether on foot or in vehicles. Shatter is a great fit for Dominion and the new game type Extraction. For some close-quarters face-time, escape the open landscape and duck into a mining facility, or slip through a doorway and hunt unsuspecting Spartans. Shatter enables multiplayer mayhem for up to 16 players in Infinity Slayer and up to 12 players in other modes, such as Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, Dominion and Extraction.

Available this December on Xbox LIVE for 800 Microsoft points, the Crimson Map Pack is the first of three upcoming “Halo 4” War Games add-ons, and will include eight all-new Achievements worth a total of 250 Gamerscore. Players who purchase the “Halo 4” War Games Map Pass or “Halo 4” Limited Edition will receive access to all three map packs as they become available in December, February and April at a 15 percent savings versus purchasing them individually.

shatter_env_6 wreckage_action_1wreckage_action_2 wreckage_action_3

Crimson Map Pack owners will have exclusive access to a single premium playlist that will only feature the new maps and will be the only place players can enjoy unique 6 vs. 6 matchmaking experiences, the new game type “Extraction,” and a wide range of voting combinations for different maps and modes.

In addition to the Crimson Map Pack, 343 Industries today unveiled “Extraction,” a new game type that will be introduced to “Halo 4” online matchmaking day and date with the map pack on 10th Dec:

· “Extraction”: Extraction is a 5 vs. 5 objective-based game type where opposing Spartan teams are tasked with extracting assets from various sites around the map. Once a team has found a site and is in position, they must plant their beacon and protect it from the opposing team while the extraction process occurs. If the defending team remains in control of the beacon, they receive one point, however if the opposing team overtakes the site before extraction is complete, the point goes to them. Once a site has been extracted, a new site becomes available. The first team to extract five points wins.

Microsoft Surface Pro Pricing Announced

Microsoft announced the pricing for the Surface Pro today.  Read on for the details.

surface_05

The Surface RT has been on sale for about a month now, and Microsoft is releasing the Surface Pro in January 2013.  The Pro will be based on a Core i5 chipset and will be a Windows 8 PC, not running RT.

One question that I’ve had is what will the Surface’s pricing be?  Well, today Microsoft announced that.  The 65GB version will be $899 plus the touch cover, and the 128GB version will set you back $999 plus the cover.  Here is most of the blog post announcing that:

It’s hard to believe it’s been just over a month since Surface with Windows RT hit the market. The response from Surface customers has been fantastic and exciting to see. In addition to sharing the terrific results that Microsoft is seeing with Windows 8 at a technology conference earlier this week, we also announced that Surface with Windows 8 Pro would be available in January 2013.

Today, I want to share a bit more detail about the growing Surface family of products and Surface with Windows 8 Pro, specifically around pricing. In January, Surface with Windows 8 Pro will be available in two versions and pricing will start at $899:

· 64GB standalone version at $899

· 128GB standalone version at $999

Both versions will both include a Surface pen with Palm Block technology and include the ability to use a Touch Cover or Type Cover (sold separately).

Surface with Windows 8 Pro uses the same familiar elegant design principles as Surface with Windows RT including the Dark Titanium VaporMg casing, dual 2×2 MIMO antennas designed specifically for Surface and of course the kickstand.

However, it also has some differences.

On the inside, Surface with Windows 8 Pro will come with Intel’s next generation Core i5 processor. This chip will give Surface with Windows 8 Pro a graphics boost for its 10.6” 16:9 ClearType display that runs at a 1920×1080 full HD resolution. Surface with Windows 8 Pro also includes a full-size USB 3.0 port. Its Mini DisplayPort can drive an external display up to 2560X1440 resolution. And, as I mentioned above, Surface with Windows 8 Pro will support Pen input. This is an amazing feature for all you note-takers or document editors out there, especially since it has expanded capacitive and digitizing technology we’re calling Palm Block that will prevent your handwriting from getting interrupted if you accidently place your palm on the screen as you write. This feature is pretty cool, and allows for a great inking experience alongside a great touch experience when needed.

Surface with Windows 8 Pro will run your current Windows 7 desktop applications – it’s a full PC AND a tablet.

And all this in a PC that will weigh less than two pounds and be less than 14 millimeters thick.

This is right where I expected it to land.  Since my ASUS EP-121 is getting a bit long in the tooth, I might go ahead and pick one of these up.  Are you interested in buying the Surface Pro?
