Review: Smurfs 2 – The Prisoner of the Green Stone

The Smurfs 2 – The Prisoner of the Green Stone is a title aimed at children and adults alike. As such, it has its fingers in many pies. Consequently, this makes for a complicated and drawn-out experience that sadly outstays its welcome on occasion. Yet, if you love all things Smurf and you adored the previous iteration, then you’ll love what’s on offer.

This 3D adventure title was developed by Osome Studio and published by Microids. Moreover, it is colourful, has oodles of platform elements, and loads of challenges to complete. Furthermore, there are loads of fights, an unlikely partnership, and a misunderstood creature. Accordingly, there is plenty going on in the Smurf-filled experience.

The Smurfs 2 – The Prisoner of the Green Stone tells an unlikely tale. 

For as long as I can remember, The Smurfs and Gargamel have been enemies. However, in this latest adventure, they must put their animosity to one side as they work together to save the world. This strange partnership is full of surprises and plenty of crazy creatures.

Handy Smurf cannot stop inventing bigger and better tools. Subsequently, when he discovers a magical stone that’ll improve every creation, he has to get his Smurfs on it. With his SmurfoMix in hand, he sets off to Gargamel’s hovel. Yet, unbeknownst to him, he is about to set off an unlikely set of events. By breaking the green stone, Handy Smurf releases an all-mighty entity known as Stolas. This enormous creature does not wish to be captured again and only the Smurfs can save the day.

Familiar mechanics.

Sadly, The Smurfs 2 – The Prisoner of the Green Stone offers little originality. Accordingly, the game is laced with familiar mechanics. As such, you are expected to dash past obstacles, leap over chasms, avoid hazards when sliding, and shoot any enemy you find. Alongside this, you must destroy every green crystal you encounter. 

To add some depth, the developers have incorporated 4 different types of ammo for the SmurfoMix. There is one that destroys the green crystals, a sticky honey version, a laser rifle, and an orb that repels objects. Each of these bullets is used to kill your opponents and solve minor puzzles. Subsequently, completing each massive realm is easier said than done.

Challenges and upgrades. 

The level of depth doesn’t stop there, as each realm has an array of challenges that must be found and completed. These testing endeavours will push you to your limit and must be revisited once the SmurfoMix is at full power. 

Upgrading your equipment is essential as the creatures and challenges become tougher. By destroying every green crystal and finding the humming plants, you can unlock new abilities and increase your firepower. 

The Smurfs 2 – The Prisoner of the Green Stone looks Smurfy. 

Visually, The Smurfs 2 – The Prisoner of the Green Stone delivers. Not only does it look Smurfy, but I love its colour palette, interesting stage design, and character models. Alongside this, Gargamel retains his creepy look and Stolas is your textbook cartoon menace. As such, fans of the series will adore what they see. 

The audio, on the other hand, doesn’t fare so well. Unfortunately, the repetitive sound bites are obnoxious and annoying. Additionally, as much as I love the “Smurf” language, too much Smurf is a Smurf, Smurf, Smurf, Smurf, if you know what I mean. Effectively, the audio is too repetitive, and this will drive you nuts.

An easy game to master. 

Where this excels is the easy-to-master controls. This was a stroke of genius by the developers, as it’ll ensure younger players can progress without too much guidance. Moreover, the excellent UI keeps the screen clear, and this allows you to focus on the mountain of combat encounters. 

What frustrated me, however, was that every level outstays its welcome. Accordingly, each area should have been broken down into manageable chunks to prevent tedium from kicking in. Yet, if you can look past this issue, there is plenty of replay value and longevity. Furthermore, completing every challenge will take next-level skills, so best of luck. 

The Smurfs 2 – The Prisoner of the Green Stone plays it safe. 

With such a wide audience to appease, I’m not surprised that The Smurfs 2 – The Prisoner of the Green Stone plays it safe. Unfortunately, though, this approach lacks originality and prevents it from truly excelling. Subsequently, it won’t appeal to everyone and that was a shame. Yet, despite its flaws, I enjoyed it and I recommend that you buy it here! Will the partnership with Gargamel work? Complete each area, befriend Stolas, and save the day.

The SRD212 12″ Powered Speaker from Stage Right is a thing of beauty. This monstrous audio device is perfect as a standalone speaker or when paired with another. Furthermore, it is easy to set up, simple to use and allows for Bluetooth Streaming. Consequently, this is the perfect option for DJs or those that have an at-home bar.

Alongside this, the sound quality will blow you away! From the first moment, I was impressed by the range of tones and the meaty bass. What’s more, the simple-to-use controls allow you to adjust the speaker without the use of a mixing deck. As such, you needn’t complicate matters or purchase any unnecessary equipment.

  • The large packaging is cumbersome and robust. Consequently, take care when you are carrying it. Though the box is understated, it can be recycled, and the contents are well-protected.

Technical aspects.

Thanks to the Class D amp, the SRD212 12″ Powered Speaker boasts a whopping 1200 watts of power. This is fantastic, as this device will handle most hefty tasks. Subsequently, this makes it versatile and suitable for many existing systems. Additionally, it is lighter, more efficient, and runs cooler than other amplifiers. As such, this should extend its longevity.

On top of this, there are 5 different intuitive DSP (digital sound processor) presets to suit any occasion. As such, at the twist of a knob, you can adjust your audio for small or large audiences. Alternatively, it is the perfect speaker for private parties or large front-of-house tasks.

Keep things simple.

Streamlining your equipment is easier said than done. However, this is the key mission of Stage Right. Thanks to their combined XLR/TRS and RCA inputs, you don’t have to worry about messing around with unnecessary cables. As such, this prevents tripping hazards and damaged cables.

Alongside this, the XLR mix output ensures that you can connect a subwoofer without the need to have a separate mixing desk. Subsequently, if you wish to run a no-frills arrangement, the SRD212 12″ Powered Speaker is perfect.

Finally, I was blown away by the excellent Bluetooth Streaming option. At the press of a button, you can use your mobile phone, tablet, or laptop to pump tunes through this incredible device. What’s more, the connection is stable, and I noticed no popping or awful crackling. Accordingly, if you want, you can switch on your phone, connect to this speaker, and get the party started.

A speaker is the life and soul of the party. As such, if the audio is terrible, the party may as well be cancelled. Thankfully, though, this delivers an amazing range of tones and a deep and rich bass line. Moreover, no matter what source I used, the speakers never faltered.

Whether I played soft classical music or deafening thrash metal tunes, I was blown away by the audio quality. Consequently, if you need a speaker that will deal with a range of audio tasks, this is the product for you.

Build quality.

No matter how hard you try, audio equipment takes a beating. This is more apparent if you are in a band or you are a mobile DJ. As such, chucking your equipment into the back of a van and moving from venue to venue is second nature. Yet, when this happens, you want your speaker to withstand a little roughhousing. Additionally, you need it to be easy to handle and simple to move.

Luckily, the SRD212 12″ Speaker is incredibly robust. What’s more, there are 2 handles to help move this 16 kg beast. As such, this isn’t too heavy, and it is ideal if you are on the move all the time. Alongside this, the hardened plastic case and high-quality jack points ensure that this is built to last.

Is the SRD212 12″ Speaker worth it?

Stage Right never ceases to amaze me. Their audio equipment is affordable, hard-wearing, and incredible to use. Moreover, the sound quality is second to none and will impress even the most critical of music lovers. What’s more, it is versatile and suitable for amateurs and professionals alike. Accordingly, I love this device and I recommend that you buy it here!

Review: Revhead

Revhead is guilty of “many fingers in many pies”. Consequently, the end product is a confusing mess and the gameplay, movement, and enjoyment factor hit rock bottom. On top of this, visually, it looks worse than a PS1 game. As such, you have to be an avid fan of cars and racing if you wish to get anything out of this title.

This mechanic simulation title was developed by Creative Pudding Hungary and published by PlayWay SA. Moreover, there are racing elements and some business management moments. Accordingly, there should be plenty to see and do. Yet, it quickly became repetitive, and I struggled to stomach the appalling graphics and the clunky gameplay.

Revhead tells a ridiculous story.

Your friend Charlie is living in the arse end of nowhere. As such, he calls for your help to run his garage. Not one for turning down weird opportunities, you jump on the next plane and fly to Australia. Here, you discover a barren landscape that is filled with car-loving yokels. These “Revheads” love nothing more than racing cars and getting covered with oil.

This is where the story and the gameplay wonderfully combine. However, the depth of the action is so shallow that it is painful. Yet, if you can get over the pointless nature of the plot, you can enjoy the gameplay at a rudimentary level. If you are mechanically minded, or you enjoy tinkering with cars, then Revhead will be right up your street.

The majority of the action focuses on your ability to strip cars, buy new parts, and repair crap rundown vehicles. Additionally, you must adjust your car setup for each race you undertake. This element of the game was interesting, as any minor issues were exasperated during each track day. However, the clumsy nature of the mechanical gameplay was painful and frustrating.

You are expected to purchase vehicles, remove damaged parts, and buy second-hand replacements. Alternatively, you can go big and buy a new vehicle for each race. I loved the concept, but the execution was woeful. Navigating every menu was tiresome and there was too much detail, so it was hard to identify each part.

Alongside this, buying new parts or cars from the newspaper was painful! A simple laptop with a search option would have streamlined the process and improved the gameplay. Ultimately, this element defined the overall impression of Revhead. Effectively, it is a combination of good ideas that are horribly executed.

Revhead looks woeful.

I’m not usually bothered by graphics. However, Revhead made me feel sick. The dated and clunky visuals look appalling. Moreover, the animation is terrible, and the world is devoid of life. Alongside this, the textures are rough and the render distance is laughable. Then you must consider the lack of race tracks and the woeful UI. To conclude, visually, this is a car wreck of a game!

The audio is just as bad. The sound effects are dreadful and lifeless. What’s more, they are loud, obnoxious, and lacking creativity. On top of this, the action feels flat and the developers have created a lifeless mess. I expected this to be exciting and aggressive, but instead, it was dull and painful.

What part needs to be replaced?

Awful controls.

A racing game should be a smooth and trouble-free experience. However, this was clumsy, cumbersome, and awful to play. Consequently, exploring the dull world was atrocious. Furthermore, it felt like you were steering a tanker rather than a sports car. Subsequently, each race was filled with over-steering, under-steering, and plenty of swearing.

Though there is a lot of content, there are only a handful of tracks available. This was disappointing, as the gameplay rarely changes. Alongside this, the jump in difficulty between the bottom and top tiers was ridiculous. Therefore, you need an expensive car with incredible parts to compete. As such, you had to grind out races or sell many parts to afford these machines. Sadly, this made the action feel repetitive, and it was an instant turnoff for me.

Revhead fails on every element.

Revhead could have been incredible. However, every element was poorly executed! The graphics are terrible, the audio is horrible, and the controls are woeful. Furthermore, the replay value and longevity are non-existent, and the story is shallow. Accordingly, this is one game that should be avoided. Yet, more information can be found here if you wish. Final Thoughts

This range is the latest in Nanoleafs really cool sets for making you home or office really unique to you. This time the shapes are ultra black hexagons and they look really cool.

Once you have decided on your overall shape, you put the hexagons together which are held firmly in place by the connectors. You then can stick the hexagons to the wall. There really isn’t that much else to that actual physical creation of your shape. Play around with your design on the floor before you put it on the wall as it’s just easier to change things.

You then use the Nanoleaf app to add the creation and control everything from there, including the ambient whites (previous Nanoleaf products allowed you to choose from millions of colours), how it reacts to music, and so much more. How do they work?

When I was kid (a very long time ago), I was a huge fan of the “Choose Your Own Adventure” books. I would read then for hours and hours, immersing myself in whatever adventure I was on. I couldn’t get enough of them.

Unlike those books, everything you need is included as part of the book.

Each corner of the book has a wheel that is used as you go through the story. The book is layed out so that you only see bottom corner of the wheel as you go through each page.

Yeah set of pages then gives you a choice which takes you on the next part of the adventure.

The My First Adventure Books are really great – they help your child to become part of a story, and they are great for helping with their reading. The whole book only takes around 15 minutes to go through, depending on their reading ability, and they book can be re-read by choosing different options and different characters.

As we are now on the run up to Christmas, it’s time to review the new James Bond 007 Scalextric Set.

It’s been the British secret agent 007’s choice of vehicle whenever he finds himself in a high-speed pursuit. However, there can only be one iconic bond car.  This Scalextric set features various traps and obstacles to decide which is the best Aston Martin of all time.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve ever wanted to race two Aston Martins around a track, well now’s your chance!

Last year we reviewed the Micro Scalextric Set James Bond set and we loved it, now it’s time to race the normal size Scalextric cars around a track.

The attention to detail on the two cars is amazing, 007 is even driving both cars! The cars even have light up headlights so you can race in the dark if you want.

The cars really hold themselves to the track using what Scalextric describe as magnatraction. There is nothing worse than racing and the cars just keep coming off! That said, there are a few parts of the track that if you time it just right you can knock the other car off – now that is fun!

There is a crossroads piece of track which gives you the opportunity to knock your opponent off of the track, it’s not just a race anymore!

The controllers feel comfortable in your hand and are very responsive.

Once you have set up the track, which is fairly simple and quick, it’s time to choose which car is for which player – then its race time!
