The Last of Us Q&A panel with Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson at Gamescom 2012

Yesterday here at Gamescom there was a special Q&A session for The Last of Us from Naughty Dog with the two leads, Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson. We were there and we captured the session for you.

CDW Ashley and Troy - The Last of Us

In case you haven’t heard about the forthcoming Naughty Dog game The Last of Us, here is how Sony described it:

Abandoned cities reclaimed by nature. A population decimated by a modern plague. Survivors are killing each other for food, weapons; whatever they can get their hands on.

Joel, a brutal survivor, and Ellie, a young teenage girl who’s braver and wiser beyond her years, must work together if they hope to survive their journey across the US.

The Q&A session lasted about 45 minutes and gave everyone an interesting look at how Troy and Ashley got involved in The Last of Us and it’s ongoing production.

And here is the video:

And this is what their characters look like in the game:

The Last of Us by Naughty Dog, and published by Sony exclusively for the PlayStation 3 will be out next year, I can’t wait.

Drive Bender v.1.3.6.0 (Tomcat) for Windows Home Server 2011 available now

Yesterday saw an update to Drive Bender for Windows Home Server 2011 released, taking it to version v1.3.6.0, also known as the Tomcat release.

whs_addin_1_thumb1_thumb_thumb

Release v1.3.6.0 release (2012-08-10)

– Update: Some branding changes to the client interface.
– Update: The settings option has been moved from the advanced tab to the main interface (lower left).
– Bug fix: As of Drive Bender v1.3.5.0 a drive removal or a drive swap operation will dismount all pool mount point for the duration of the operation. This is by design, however the notification of this dismount is not displayed, and as a result some users may not realize that this is intended.
– Bug fix: As of Drive Bender v1.3.5.0 a drive removal or a drive swap operation will dismount all pool mount point for the duration of the operation. This is by design, however if Drive Bender is set to manage system drive letters, then it may assign the dismounted mount point’s drive letter to the drive removed, this could cause the mount point not to come back up.
– Added: strict driver version check now performed. If there is a mismatch, an error is logged.
– Update: By default CRC validation of files moved or copied is now disabled (effects duplication, drive removal and drive swapping). This does not effect uses that have explicitly changed this seeing. This can be re-enabled via the settings.
– Bug fix: Opening the Advanced windows under the WHS addin (classic interface) can cause the dashboard to crash.
– Bug fix: The duplication tools could fail when running under the WHS classic theme.
– Update: Some additions and changes to themes.
– Bug fix: The map pooled drive option under setting was not working correctly.
– Bug fix: The progress on some drive management operations did not show correctly.

Microsoft Releases Windows Home Server 2011 Rollup 3

Microsoft released a rollup release for Windows Home Server 2011, Rollup 3.  Read on for details.

logo_mslogo-h_web

Microsoft released a rollup release for Windows Home Server 2011 today.  Here is the partial changelog announcement:

Feature that is included in this update

You can now configure the Launchpad to start in the minimized state by selecting the “Always minimize the Launchpad at start” check box.

Major issues that are resolved by this update
Issue 1

When you try to connect a Windows 8-based client computer to Windows Home Server 2011, you receive an “Unexpected Error” message.

Issue 2

On a computer that is running Windows 8 and that has Internet Explorer 10 installed, thumbnails for Remote Web Access (RWA) media files and folders are not displayed correctly. Specifically, the thumbnails are displayed as black squares.

Issue 3

Assume that you connect a Windows 8-based client computer to a Windows Home Server 2011-based server, and then set the client backup property to “Automatically wake this computer up from sleep or hibernation to run a scheduled backup.” In this situation, the backup is not successful if the client computer is asleep or in hibernation.

Issue 4

You receive “Computer Monitoring Errors” alerts every 30 minutes. The following “Computer Monitoring Errors” alerts are fixed in this update rollup:

  • Alerts that are triggered by client synchronization time-out
  • Alerts that are triggered by stale computer records that belong to client computers that were removed
  • Alerts that occur when the router manufacturer information is not retrieved
  • Alerts that occur when an RWA Domain socket connection is aborted

In addition, the description of alerts will include the name of the failed component, to improve troubleshooting.

Issue 5

You receive the following incorrect warning alert when UPnP is not available on the router:

The router is not configured correctly for Anywhere Access. You must configure the router to remotely access the network

Issue 6

Watson crashes because of an error in Wssbackup.exe. When this issue occurs, client backup may not work correctly, and you may receive alerts or error messages.

Issue 7

Performance improvements are made to Client File and Folder Restore.

Issue 8

When you try to download multiple files from RWA on a single request, the operation fails.

Issue 9

Some health alerts do not work in Windows 8. For example, the “The Network Firewall is turned off” and “Virus protection is turned off, not installed, or not up-to-date” alerts do not work.

Known issues

Issue 1
If you have installed Update Rollup 3 Beta, you must uninstall it (for more information about how to do this, go to the “How to uninstall Update Rollup 3 Beta” section).

Issue 2
Client computers may restart after you apply Update Rollup 3. Before this restart happens, some functionality may not work.

This looks like a pretty decent release, so if you are running WHS 2011, go ahead and update the software.

Square Enix introduces new CONTRACTS online mode for Hitman: Absolution

0

Today at Gamescom, Square Enix introduced an all new online mode for Hitman: Absolution called CONTRACTS and it is very cool!

HA_Contracts_Safe_Bomb

CONTRACTS is a new online mode which allows gamers to create and share their own custom hit challenges within the HITMAN: ABSOLUTION game. Choose a level, targets, weapons and then set your rules for completing your  contract based on time, style and witnesses. There are no clumsy editors or complicated mechanics to learn; in CONTRACTS you simply play to create, and as CONTRACTS is an asynchronous mode, you can compete against friends at any time, regardless of whether they are online. HITMAN: ABSOLUTION will also ship with many pre-set CONTRACTS, each designed by the very best assassins at IO Interactive.

“CONTRACTS was inspired by our loyal and extremely creative fans, many of whom are still finding new and amazing ways of taking out targets in previous Hitman games,” said Christian Elverdam, gameplay director for HITMAN: ABSOLUTION. “CONTRACTS mode finally delivers a way for Hitman players to fully realize both their creativity and competitive nature. Whether they’re fighting to shave off a split second from their time or combining elements and timing events to create unprecedented accidental deaths, gamers can now challenge and inspire each another with an endless variety of user-generated contracts.”

Upon accepting and successfully completing a contract, players will be rewarded in contract dollars with the amount depending upon how well they performed. In order to create more elaborate and creative setups, the player can choose from a vast arsenal of weapons, disguises, upgrades, and techniques; all of which can be unlocked by either playing through the story mode of HITMAN: ABSOLUTION or by spending those hard-earned contract dollars.

Having seen a behind closed doors demo of CONTRACTS mode this afternoon at Gamescom I was really impressed. The ability to not only create your own contracts but being able to play contracts that other people have created and then challenge your friends really adds to what already looks like a spectacular game.

Here are some more screenshots to keep you going:

PlayStation Plus Coming to PS Vita, Storage Space Increased

0

Sony continues to make news from Gamescom in Koln today, now announcing that the PlayStation Plus service is coming to the Vita and storage space for game saves is being increased.  Read on for details.

PSN Plus Cloud Storge Logo

Sony is bringing PlayStation Plus to the PS Vita and is increasing your storage space for game saves to 1GB from 150MB.  Great news!  Here are some of the posted details:

Since its inception, PlayStation Plus has delivered a strong value to PlayStation gamers. We’ve been keeping our ears to the ground and asking Plus members “What would you like to see added to PlayStation Plus?”

Today, I’m happy to share the news that was announced at Gamescom: PlayStation Plus is coming to PS Vita this year, and Online Game Saves are getting a giant upgrade in September.

We will also deliver PlayStation Plus, which is currently available for PS3 users, to PS Vita users this year. By purchasing a membership to PlayStation Plus, PS Vita users will be able to enjoy various services which will become available exclusively for members.

Additionally, we’re upgrading Online Game Save Storage. Previously, Online Game Saves offered up to 150MB of game save data storage in the cloud for PlayStation 3. With this update, Plus members will get to store up to 1GB of game save data. This means you’ll never have to worry about running out of space for your game save files!

This is really good news.  Here’s hoping that they roll out some of the fun features, like beta games, to the PS Vita as well!
