War Thunder for PS4: We Still Have a Launch Title

1

Any of you that are looking to get a PS4 at launch on 29th November will no doubt be aware that both Watch Dogs and DriveClub are no longer going to be available at launch. This is obviously a crushing blow but there’s still something that will be available at launch to keep us entertained, War Thunder.

shot-2013_nwprnsw

At this year’s Eurogamer Expo I was lucky enough to have a chat with Pavel Kulikov (producer for War Thunder) about Gaijin Entertainment’s upcoming War Thunder. So far War Thunder has enjoyed some very respectable popularity on the PC; deservedly boasting it already has 3 million players. What’s great about this for potential PS4 owners is that War Thunder will allow all its players to play with each other, across both platforms. So when it releases on PS4 there will already be a bustling community ready to play with. Useful.

Currently there are 300 planes that have been painstakingly designed and crammed into War Thunder and there are plans for more vehicles as time goes on. Eventually players will be able to take to land and sea as well as the air. Players on the ground will have a different role to play in the battles such as an AA gun concentrating on defence. Considering how well designed the current 300 planes are it’s difficult to imagine more vehicles in War Thunder but no one’s going to argue with more stuff.

There are a lot of mediocre flight sims out there and I’m glad to say War Thunder isn’t one of them. Playing War Thunder is a very enjoyable experience. Controlling your aircraft is smooth and efficient without any of the inherent clumsiness of a lesser game. And because of the time period War Thunder is set in the gameplay is “reduced” to good old fashioned dog fights. Machine guns and rockets if you’re lucky. No locking on from across the map and letting the missile do your job for you.

5

If you have a PC and you’re interested it’s definitely worth taking a look. Oh did I mention it’s free-to-play. And it will be on PS4 too. The only benefit to paying for War Thunder is an increase in the XP you earn, essentially unlocking those vehicles even faster. If anything this seems like a good reason not to pay to me and make the game last longer. But at least it’s your choice.

So don’t despair that all that time waited and money spent on your long awaited PS4 will all be in vain – War Thunder’s got your back. The combat is fun, the detail on the vehicles is ridiculously good and it will be available free at launch for the PS4. There are plans to add content so time goes on so there’s plenty more to look forward to. It even supports Oculus Rift for those interested, and it works very well on it too. Looking up through your glass cockpit whilst manoeuvring your plane to track a foe is both practical and cool.  War Thunder is definitely one to watch and I can’t wait to get my hands on it properly.

DriveClub Delayed for PS4 Until Early 2014

0

SCE Worldwide Studios and the team at Evolution Studios have made the difficult decision to delay the release of DRIVECLUB and DRIVECLUB PlayStation Plus Edition until early 2014. DRIVECLUB will be a truly innovative, socially connected racing game, but the team requires more time in order to deliver on their vision — and I’m fully confident the game will surpass your expectations.

driveclub201.jpg

This decision also affects PlayStation Plus members‘ Instant Game Collection for launch. To be clear, DRIVECLUB PlayStation Plus Edition will still be part of the Instant Game Collection when it is released. This make two big titles delayed after Watch Dogs was delayed until Spring 2014 this week.

Review of Armored Core: Verdict Day from Namco Bandai

0

I don’t think there has ever been a point in my life when storming about as a giant mechanical death machine causing untold destruction on all around me hasn’t appealed to me. How could that not be cool? The latest addition to the Armored Core franchise has an online focus which could be a great new way to destroy things as a huge robot. Sign me up.

11

After a slightly lengthy install you’ll get your first taste of Verdict Day’s menus. At first they can be slightly confusing and there isn’t much in the way of explanation to help you in those early stages. I felt a little lost but after a short time you’ll probably have a pretty good idea of how to navigate Verdict Day’s menus. You won’t know what everything is unless you just get in there and figure it out so that’s what I did.

I don’t know about you but I think being constantly interrupted by loading screens and/or pup-ups can be quite a nuisance. A constant barrage of uninformative pop-ups and seemingly unnecessary loading screens work against your every effort, especially in those early stages. Providing me with huge amounts of superfluous information when I just start a game doesn’t help. Both opening and backing out of a submenu can cause a hefty loading screen to occur. Depending on what you’re trying to do you can literally spend more time waiting for loading screens than actually doing anything.

When you do briefly get chance to do something, and you’ve figured out what everything is, there are some genuinely clever online features in Verdict Day. Initially you will need to either set up your own group or join another one from a list. I set up my own so I could play on my own until I got an idea of what was going on. Each group, and in turn player, will fight for one of the three factions globally. A winning faction is declared either at the end of an in-game season or when only one faction remains. It’s a great feature that really has potential to change an online experience, or at least expand it.

12

Also impressive is the scope for customization of you’re AC’s (Armored Cores). Yet again you will need to figure out how the awkward menus work but once you do it’s clear there are loads of options for your very own AC. There’s more than enough new stuff to unlock and buy to keep you coming back and levelling up for a long time. Providing you enjoy the gameplay.

Trying out a couple of the story missions soon becomes a repetitive affair. Go somewhere, that’s usually about 5 seconds away, kill something. Sometimes it’s nameless drones and sometimes it’s another mech. Nothing special or creative at all but progression is good and you usually get enough of a reward to make it worth while. But earning money by replaying the first few simple “story” missions is just too effective to ignore, so grind on.

After customization comes a battle. You will essentially stand there and shoot something while it shoots back and see who wins. Sure you can sort of fly a little bit and dodge but it’s just so dull. Huge amounts of HUD and nothing else. Numbers, overlays and stats that give the illusion that something clever is going on. There’s nothing else to say about the actual combat in Verdict Day. This is definitely a game played in the menus not on the battlefield.

And there wouldn’t be anything wrong with that but the menus are so draining to navigate and the combat is just pure awful so there’s very little left to enjoy. I can’t help but get the feeling that Armored Core wants to alienate people and keep calling itself “hardcore”. Rather than help new players enjoy Armored Core it would rather flatter its current fans whilst keeping everyone else firmly out. And if the visuals of Verdict Day are anything to go by it was made with minimal effort under the free pass of being “hardcore”.

The visuals are by far, and I mean almost a generation in between, the worst available on the PS3. There is nothing else available on the PS3 I can think of to even compare it with. The environment is a bland monotone wasteland with nothing but a few poorly textured buildings thrown in and the occasional hill or crater. The detail on the AC’s is reasonable on the customization menu but when you get into the game you wonder why you bothered. Particle effects from explosions and muzzle fire are bursts of square-like sparks that add little to the already underwhelming graphics. I know someone worked hard on it, sorry, but It is unavoidably hideous.

5

Archaic menu designs that would feel outdated on a PS2 and an irritating amount of pop-ups and loading screens make Armored Core: Verdict Day just about the least friendly game I’ve ever played. If you’re a new player looking to get into the franchise Verdict Day will put in absolutely zero effort to meet you half way. Even if you do make it far enough to get to grips with the game all you will get is uninspired, generic mech combat with a complex customization system under the hood.

I’m all for complex systems and micromanagement, spending hour upon hour finding exactly the best parts to maximize stats but only if the result is enjoyable and immersive gameplay. Your reward for figuring out how to play the game and putting hours of effort in will be the same bland gameplay you would get if you didn’t.

There are certainly some great online features, like the global struggle between factions, but unfortunately it doesn’t matter because almost every fundamental has been forgotten. A complete absence of tutorials or help only further exclude those who don’t play Armored Core already. Armored Core: Verdict Day shows what you can do so long as someone calls your game hardcore. So call me a noob but I’ll go play something else.

Review of Farming Simulator 2013 from Focus Home Interactive

0

I had this vision of myself mocking and joking about Farming Simulator and then playing it and becoming completely addicted to it. Farming Simulator is a brave release in the age of FPS’s and high budget set pieces intentionally swapping excitement for what could certainly be viewed as boredom.

screenshot09

Your task is simple. You have a farm, some (very) basic equipment and a chunky loan to repay. The one and only task in Farming Simulator is to make money. To do so you first prepare a field for a crop, sew whatever seeds you want and then harvest and sell the goods. Eventually you’ll have enough extra cash to afford better machinery which will in turn allow you to harvest a crop more efficiently.

There are five different places to sell your hard earned crops and each will offer slightly different prices for each crop. So it’s up to you to figure out where to sell your crop to maximize profits. At the start of the game there are three different crops available; wheat, barley and canola. If you progress far enough you will be able to purchase equipment to grow sugar or potatoes. There is an overwhelming sense that farming equipment doesn’t come cheap.

From what little I know about farming in the real world this isn’t inaccurate at all, but be prepared to grind. The core gameplay basically comes down to repeating the same tasks repeatedly to earn money and hopefully purchase some better stuff to then repeat the tasks more efficiently. It takes a huge amount of time to progress noticeably but for some reason there is something that kept me coming back for more.

screenshot03

Or at least for a while. As you gain larger fields and better vehicles the money you yield from a harvest increases and in turn you can afford even better things. Eventually though, despite all the vehicles, the arduous sense of progression and the repetitive nature of your life as a farmer starts to become too much. Eventually there will be nothing you need and nothing you even want and at that point the only appeal of Farming Simulator is its gameplay which will probably not be enough to hold interest on its own.

But it will take a long time to own everything Farming Simulator has to offer. There is an impressively huge amount of vehicles to buy. Unless you have a moderate knowledge of farming equipment everything you can imagine, plus some stuff you probably can’t, is available to own and operate. All the vehicles are highly detailed and look good from a distance but look too closely and you will see some pretty shoddy textures at work.

Unfortunately reasonable visuals stop at the farming equipment show floor. Draw distances are an absolute joke and even small fields regularly go from invisible to a patchwork of smooth brown “dirt” squares that are nothing more than blocks of colour. Only when you get very close can you actually see what’s what. Other than the average looking vehicles the only word that can do justice to Farming Simulator’s visuals is ugly.

Joining the basic visuals are the game’s sound and physics. If a tractor comes into contact with a very small hay bale it will likely do a wheelie before the bale gets jammed underneath and the whole situation gets very ridiculous very quickly. Most of the time you will be driving slowly across a field so there won’t be a problem. Although one of my fields has a problem where my trailer for sewing seeds goes haywire every time I drive over a certain patch.

screenshot12

My initial suspicions where at least partially correct. The sound effects are monotonous, the visuals uninspired, the physics engine ridiculous but still I have played Farming Simulator for a very “healthy” amount of time. The desire to progress, earn your fortune and get hold of some of the best equipment available is all there is to keep you coming back – but sometimes that’s enough. The open style and complete freedom to do whatever you want whenever you want is liberating. For me Farming Simulator’s biggest appeal by far is the impressive roster of vehicles, which is what kept me going back.

But eventually the repetitive nature of Farming Simulator might just become too much to handle. There where times early game when I was earning so little and everything was so expensive that I nearly gave up. If you push through the goals get more interesting but the processes remain the same. Grow, harvest, sell, buy. There’s definitely an appeal to Farming Simulator’s slow paced, methodical gameplay. The question isn’t how much there is to do but how much you want to do it. If it doesn’t sound like your cup of tea then it probably isn’t, but I’m glad I gave it a go. If you get the opportunity Farming Simulator’s at least worth a try.
