Any of you that are looking to get a PS4 at launch on 29th November will no doubt be aware that both Watch Dogs and DriveClub are no longer going to be available at launch. This is obviously a crushing blow but there’s still something that will be available at launch to keep us entertained, War Thunder.

At this year’s Eurogamer Expo I was lucky enough to have a chat with Pavel Kulikov (producer for War Thunder) about Gaijin Entertainment’s upcoming War Thunder. So far War Thunder has enjoyed some very respectable popularity on the PC; deservedly boasting it already has 3 million players. What’s great about this for potential PS4 owners is that War Thunder will allow all its players to play with each other, across both platforms. So when it releases on PS4 there will already be a bustling community ready to play with. Useful.

Currently there are 300 planes that have been painstakingly designed and crammed into War Thunder and there are plans for more vehicles as time goes on. Eventually players will be able to take to land and sea as well as the air. Players on the ground will have a different role to play in the battles such as an AA gun concentrating on defence. Considering how well designed the current 300 planes are it’s difficult to imagine more vehicles in War Thunder but no one’s going to argue with more stuff.

There are a lot of mediocre flight sims out there and I’m glad to say War Thunder isn’t one of them. Playing War Thunder is a very enjoyable experience. Controlling your aircraft is smooth and efficient without any of the inherent clumsiness of a lesser game. And because of the time period War Thunder is set in the gameplay is “reduced” to good old fashioned dog fights. Machine guns and rockets if you’re lucky. No locking on from across the map and letting the missile do your job for you.

If you have a PC and you’re interested it’s definitely worth taking a look. Oh did I mention it’s free-to-play. And it will be on PS4 too. The only benefit to paying for War Thunder is an increase in the XP you earn, essentially unlocking those vehicles even faster. If anything this seems like a good reason not to pay to me and make the game last longer. But at least it’s your choice.

So don’t despair that all that time waited and money spent on your long awaited PS4 will all be in vain – War Thunder’s got your back. The combat is fun, the detail on the vehicles is ridiculously good and it will be available free at launch for the PS4. There are plans to add content so time goes on so there’s plenty more to look forward to. It even supports Oculus Rift for those interested, and it works very well on it too. Looking up through your glass cockpit whilst manoeuvring your plane to track a foe is both practical and cool.  War Thunder is definitely one to watch and I can’t wait to get my hands on it properly.
